Star Retired for Line of Duty Death

  • "He lived his dream and died doing what he wanted to do," the brother told a reporter after Chicago police officials retired the star of Nauden, a 21-year police veteran who died in May after suffering a heart attack at 46.

Nauden was about to make an undercover drug purchase on a Southeast Side street as part of an investigation of the Black P Stones street gang when he suddenly felt ill, according to department spokeswoman Melissa Stratton.

Without compromising the sensitive operation, he left the scene and flagged down a passing ambulance that took him to a hospital, she said. He died the next day.

"It was a high-pressure situation," Stratton said of the planned drug buy.

Police did not publicize Nauden's death at the time because the undercover operation was ongoing, Michael Shields, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said at Wednesday's ceremony at police headquarters. Even the usual black-and-purple bunting that is draped over entrances of police stations to denote an officer's death wasn't put up in Nauden's case, for the same reason.

Maybe we're a bit out of the loop, but has the Department declared a week of mourning? Are the flags at half staff? Mourning bands to be worn for seven days? Is the bunting over the doors at HQ or Homan Square or at the FOP? Did we miss it?

Godspeed Officer Nauden. We, along with many of your brothers and sisters, never knew.

Just wanted to note that Don Cornelius, who took his own life on 02/01/12, was a former of the CPD.

May him and Nauden rest in peace.

There was an honors funeral held when Paul passed away. Was kinda low key throughout the department. The funeral was not attended very well by the department. Don't know why? Worked with Paul on tact in 003 back in the day. Great guy and and great policeman. May you rest in peace Paulie!!!!

Paul was a nice guy. Quiet, dependable and professional. A cool sense of humor and a great family man. He lived for his wife and kids. He will be missed. RIP Paul.

I was at training at the Academy when this happened. I remember someone coming in and announcing it. There were a couple guys from narcotics in the class as well. I also remember reading about it in the newspaper, but the story said that he was chasing a suspect during a narcotics investigation when he collapsed.

Although I acknowledge that this was a unique situation at the time of his death, many people didn't know because they just don't pay enough attention. Department wise all the same notifications were made. A special bulletin was put out, minus his picture, as well as put out in e-mails. The funeral arrangements were all put out there. So to say "we never knew", as a close friend of Paul's, is kind of insulting.

The completion of this narcotics investigation was more important than the information and respect that a police officer died in the line of duty of a heart attack during it. I don't get it. Prayers to PO Nauden and his family.

Sad news for our law enforcement community. This reminds me of a P.O. that had chest pains at work, told the sgt on duty, we rushed them to the E.R and in fact they were having a stroke. The sgt refused to give them IOD although the officer had been hours on duty and got chest pains like Nauden at work. The doctors even said it that our work is way too stressful and unpredictable. Oh whatever, some jaggoffs never stop surprising me how they mess with fellow officers.

I would like to remind everyone that the only people that can order US flags to be flown at half staff are the President and a governer, within his state. I know that this is a much abused rule and that we continuously see the flag at police stations at half staff for line of duty deaths, but it is improper. That is why we ave a mourning flag that is designed to replace the city flag in time of mourning and that may be flown at half staff. Don't get me wrong, it is not a really big issue, but someone always raises the question about why the US flag is not at half staff, and that is why.

It's a shame that he didn't get the send off that he deserved for all that he did.

I do hope that the City, as they do with the fire, acknowledge that this was a LOD.. for those who do not know, if your a ff and get called to a fire and have a heart attack within 48 hours of your shift, it is still considered a LOD. How many PO have heart attacks off duty that could be blamed on something that they did on duty, yet not receive the benefits from a LOD death.

Sounds like this PO kept his head on the mission even in his last moments of life.

Sounds like the 1st Watch COMMAND staff (desk crew blue shirts inclded) in 017 and zone 1 OEMC MJ and their JOINT efforts to demean and punish and bring demise to a once decent shift and spot in CPD, by RATTING OUT and complicating partners and beat assignments! While kicking back ALL reports and denying time while playing "favorites" all the time while supported by the LT. This all along as we thought when the Cpt. left all the screwballs would have too!

Nothing changed! Hey Staples next time ya cry about how proud you are of your people at the xmas party....don't forget the 1st watch people exist too....there are decent people very disgruntled due to being backstabbed and messed with and talked about over the years by these screwballs who are those you entrust to baby sit us!

You are a complete idiot. Staples has an open door policy and has never turned a blue shirt away. Why don’t you stop hiding behind the blog and go say this to her face?

Why do you think Captain KA is gone? Who do you think made that decision? Please enlighten us on “as we thought when the Cpt. left all the screwballs would have too!” How was that going to happen? A magic wand? No. It’s called a contract.

Staples didn’t choose or entrust Lt. JS to babysit the first watch. He was a bid. She also didn’t pick MJ for Zone 1 or the watch secretary.

You are an asshat and part of the problem. You prefer to hide behind the blog because you don’t have the balls to go say it to her face.

Your comment “next time ya cry about how proud you are of your people at the xmas party”….again…you are a complete asshat for saying this. For once, someone has our backs and cares and you have the nerve to make an asinine comment like that.

Why don’t you give MM a call and ask him to come back and fix the mess on the first watch. Better yet, why don’t you bid out of 017 if you are so unhappy? You won’t because you would rather cry about it than grow some balls and do something about it.

Now go warm up your baby bottle and save this space for those that were not aware of the Line of Duty Death of P.O. Nauden.

my deepest sympany to the family .but when you have a bad heart or chronic high blood pressure .its just so long you can do that type or any type of high stress police work or any kind of work before you have a heart attack and die .or a massive stroke ,in my city div its extremely high stress ,we had two bosses to fall dead of heart attacks .one year my dir had 2 heart atacks in one year .my co worker had a heart attack .also that ,same year . the coordintor in that city dept had a nervous break down . along with another staff that couldnt take any more of the daily pressure in the dept up stairs .they dont realize all the hell and pressure front line city workers go thru.and sad to say when they dont get out of those positions in time because they need the income .those city jobs kill them .then if you retire they want you to pay 500dollars monthly for one person for your health insurance .and now they got the nerve to try to mess with our pensions .they have to be crazy .they need to increase it.but to stay to the main point im so so sorry for your loss you and all the front line city workers who work in hell daily are in my prayers because when you work on a job where no body appreciates what you do or go thru daily we need them .signed a stressed out sick city worker .who almost had a heart attack and a stroke at work .
