Houdini Fails

  • A purported gang member arrested this week for shooting a year-old girl last summer tried to escape by climbing into the drop-ceiling of a police interrogation room, authorities said.

Malik Jackson, 17, didn’t get very far — but officials upped his charges to include attempted escape and criminal damage to property.

  • When he was being questioned at Area 2 police headquarters on the Far South Side Tuesday, Jackson allegedly tried to escape by scaling the wall and climbing into the drop ceiling in an interview room.

Detectives heard the tile falling, and Jackson was detained in the ceiling above, Caceres said. Jackson’s alleged antics damaged the ceiling. It will cost $350 to repair, Caceres said.

We can think of a bunch of times where this has occurred - offender slips a cuff, climbs up into the hanging ceiling and then either finds an exit or falls though. Always in the old Area buildings, too. You would think someone would fix that somewhere in the intervening thirty years.

Oh, SCC, why would you want them to fix it? The entertainment value is so high, it's worth leaving it just the way it is!

Malik Jackson should be thanking his lucky stars that his ceiling meandering didn't result in him falling through into A2's lockup.

We all know what happens in A2's lockup.

One of the fondest memories I have had on this job was when I found a burglar hiding above the drop ceiling of the Erie/LaSalle Bodyshop on Christmas morning. He was refusing to come down from the beam he was perched on, so I started to tug on his leg. As I pulled his leg from the cabinet I was standing on, the two of us, and half the ceiling came crashing down. The toxins in the dust that mushroomed into the air probably took five years off my life, but man, did everyone get a good laugh out of it. Sadly, all it does is remind me of how much fun I used to have on this job.

Perhaps the wanna-be escapees "fix" it. Every time one of them climbs up there and rambles about the heating ducts for a while, the heat kicks back on.

Great story coming out of Calumet City where police shot and killed a 15 year old "boy" with a knife. Seems the little "autistic" thug was out of control and hiding in the basement of the house. Cops went down to the basement and ordered junior to drop his knife and come out. Little junior decides to lunge at the cops with his knife and cuts one of the officers. Cops shoot the young man dead. Case closed? No way. Now we have the wailing family going after police because they didn't do something different with this little crazed maniac. The last incident at this house had the same little bastard go after cops with a butcher knife and he was tased. In another incident he beat up his mother. Lots of Monday morning quarterbacks around after the fact. I can't understand why family members and/or neighbors didn't go down to the basement to talk to this lad and try to disarm him. No way. Just dial 911 and let the police clean up your festering mess. Can you imagine how many lawyers have been pounding on the door to get this case. CHA CHING!

Does the Superintendent notice the general low opinion that the rank and file have of his Exempts? Does the Superintendent realize this is a direct result of publicly flogging them every week?

Does the Superintendent realize that Compstat and the poor treatment of his Exempts leads the regular guys to believe the Superintendent and the Mayor think poorly of them too? Does he care?

I'm suprised the repair was so cheep. To repaint a jail cell with a union painter cost over a $1000 and several hours. It must not be a union job.

We had that happen in the Suburban Police Dept. I worked for. Dirt Bag wouldn't come down out of the ceiling, so we borrowed a pike pole from the Fire Dept. I worked great, unfortunately he broke his leg from the sudden stop he encountered when he hit the floor. True Story. Name witheld to project the innocent. Be safe out there.

Union job. The city needs a work order to be written up. Then it will be processed through regular channels. Repair will be started next year.

This isn't the first time this has happened. Even the newest CPD stations were designed more as community centers not with security and officer safety in mind.

If the city were ever to build any new facilitiy they should get input from the people who work there and see what they need and what causes problems.

Today there would be a CR against you for interfering with a criminal act and attempting to apprehend a docile offender without taking the proper steps to insure his safety!

Great story?!?! What a doofus you must be. The kid is dead. The family is a nervous wreck, understandably. The department is going to get blamed for a justified shooting and a lawsuit will be coming. There's a vigil/peaceful protest scheduled for tonight outside the station. What is great about this story moron? Only good thing came of it is that the coppers didn't get hurt more than cut on the arm. Cal City had their house coded as a place with an autistic kid, this is just sad all the way around.

Area 2 has this happen every now and then, yet NOBODY takes ANY action to do anything about it. Although it usually is quite funny when it happens, there could also be some deadly consequences if the arrestee attempting to escape somehow gets the jump on any one of the numerous cops operating in the building, or gets a hold of an officers weapon. Weapon security should be much tighter up there, and everywhere else, just sayin.

SOOO SAD, BUT TOO BAD, an autistic kid armed with a knife is an assailant armed with a deadly weapon, when they threaten or use it against a law enforcement officer. Maybe the parents should have been more concerned with keeping knives and other dangerous objects away from the kid, instead of being so concerned with blaming the Cops, and trying to win the Ghetto Lottery. Always the same shit here, Deny Accountability, Pass the Buck, get the police-hating mainstream socialist news media involved and stirred up, obtain a shyster ambulance-chaser attorney, blame the police, and when all else fails, cry Racism.

Must be the smell of money around the Calumet Park shooting. Rev. Jesse Jackson came by to see the family of the deceased moron and offer his help. Didn't see Father Flavor around crying his eyes out for the kid. Did notice dozens of Ghetto Reverands all blubering about police brutality. I am sure Jesse brought along a good attorney to handle their case. What the family should have done is chained this little criminal asshole to the kitchen stove away from any knives. At least they would know where he was all the time. The police acted properly in shooting this goof, but of course the courts will hand them a check to stem their "grief". In any other country this wouldn't even be a story.

FYI to the civilian posting about the Calumet City story. The vast majority of austistic kids don't chase people around with butcher knives. This little deceased rat was out of control and should have been put in a mental facility for life. Anyone who beats up their mother is no good. Can't forget about the nice Police Officer Grandmother who took care of her daughters kids when she booked. The one 15 year old beat and stabbed her to death and threw her into a sewer behind her house. This was all over this moron ditching school. Fuck these little sadistic murdering criminal bastards. I wouldn't show them any sympathy. If the kid is autistic then get him medicated. If he/she is violent then put them away.

More revs than you ever seen in your life, "pastors" attracted like flies from miles around, candlelight vigils on the lawn, and Jesse Jackson stating to the Feds that "the police were up on a pedestal and they shot down at him."

Huh?

"I can't understand why family members and/or neighbors didn't go down to the basement to talk to this lad and try to disarm him."

--2/02/2012 05:21:00 AM

This was all the time. How about back up out of the basement and lock the door behind you and just let it roll until he gets tired of "acting out."

...or drop him off at Pat Quinn's house, since the governor is closing mental health places like Tinley Park.

Just when the figure hits "1 out of 100 kids are autistic," the shrinks go to work on the problem by "re-defining" autism to clear the books a little, so to speak.

It's scaring them, huh?

I've seen 'em in August. A large brown balloon with black stripes and 4 tiny legs, nose, and tail sticking out.

Like one of those weird puffer fish or something.

You don't need the crime lab, you need the bomb squad.

Clear the area!
