The Gift That Keeps On Giving

  • A female bartender whose videotaped beating was broadcast around the world in 2007 told two responding officers her attacker was a Chicago cop and that three cameras captured the incident.

    But the officers’ police report didn’t mention another cop was suspected of the beating or that it was videotaped, city attorneys acknowledged in a filing in federal court.

    The bartender, Karolina Obrycka, claims the responding officers left the information out because they didn’t want to deal with the other cop, Anthony Abbate. Obrycka also says she gave the officers Abbate’s full name, which the city disputes.

True? Who knows? We don't think any of the existing video has sound, so it comes down to "she said, he said." Not enough for a "Thirty Pending" type finding, but enough to make Corp Counsel think that settling is the better part of actually going to trial.

In any event, expect to see the video about a billion more times in the next few days. Thanks again whoever greased the skids for this idiot to get hired despite his questionable background. We'll be paying the price for that decision for the duration of our career and probably the duration of everyone else reading today.

I may be wrong, but I could swear that I saw her interviewed on the "O'Reilly Factor," back when this shit first hit the fan. Abbate was identified and arrested by the Chicago Police. Video is awful to watch, but she suffered no injuries. None. Did not go hospital until a couple days later(after talking to a lawyer probably). Video shows her jumping up onto her feet after fatass Abbate gets winded and stops throwing punches. The video looks like most, if not all, Abbate's punches don't land. There is no fucking way in hell this warranted an Aggravated Battery charge. Abbate is a goon and deserved to be punished, but she's just a money hungry bitch now. Abbate was off duty. Her first lawsuit against the police department because she was victimized by an officer was tossed because he was off duty and not using his position as an officer during the incident. She did not suffer any injuries. Did not seek immediate medical attention. The CPD identified Abbate, arrested Abbate, called the Cook County States Attorney and asked for felony charges. She's upset the officers did not mention what the offender did for a living on the case report.? So what. He was arrested and charged by us. I'm sure she'll say "it's not about the money". Fuck her.

First off, there is sound. Second, she didn't know his name or that he was a cop cause she only worked there 3 weeks. Third, the reporting officers did not try to cover up anything and the shit department tried to fire them. It's a case of "I need to tie the city to the law suit cause that's where the money is"!

When Goudy puts cops to the screws

That's Abbate!

SCC, your disgust, while understandable, is misplaced.
After reading the lengthy transcript of the allegations, it seems apparent that the responding/reporting officers left the report so vague as to appear that they were covering for a fellow officer; why they would do THAT

OFF TOPIC

If you are a younger officer with a mortgage ( which may or may not be under water). The gubbmint has a new program called Harp 2.0 which starts in March. The main requirement is that your mortgage has to be owned by either fannie mae or freddie mac ( both fese which are in receivership). This program will refinance without an appraisal and is very, very generous as far as rates go. The 30yr will probably be just over 4% and the 15 should be in the 3s.
I know the mindset of the typical police officer ( retired from the job) but I also bought my retirement home with the 6500 tax credit and installed a new AC unit with the 1500 credit.

Please google " Harp 2.0" and go through the step to see if you qualify. If you do, probably save a few hundred a month on you mortgage.

The two coppers in question worked for me. They are two of the straightest Officers on this Department to the point that some would call them shakey. If that woman had told them that the offender was a copper there is no way that they would not have put that in the report. In addition I can guarantee you that they would have notified me. When I first heard about this and what they were being accused of and even disciplined for, even I was in shock at it inspite of how chickenshit this department is. These guys are so, good, so straight, so ethical that if I'm ever a victim of a crime, I want them to get the job because I know the job will be handled right. What happened to these guys and the wringer that they are going to be put through is a damn shame.

Listen up fucktardboy, the case report is a first investigator's tool. It AIN'T the investigation dipshit. That's what the DETECTIVES are there for. It's the DETECTIVE'S job to gather the entire story and put the ENTIRE story into one single supp which detailes EVERYTHING.

Since you aren't a fucking cop, I'll explain it to you so even an ignorant fuck can understand:

THE CASE REPORT DOCUMENTS WHAT HAPPENED, IE... HE HIT HER. END OF STORY.

It's not an in depth investigational tool dipshit, it's written to document the basics of what happened, the DICKS do the investigation asshat.

Oh great, another member of Mensa speaks out. The report probably seemed vague because it was probably the thousandth battery report these guys have written. When you get some time on the job kid, you won't write every report as if it were a novel. Plus, the bartender didn't say that fatass was a cop because she didn't know. At the most, a drunk at this dive bar said he thought the offender was a cop, but couldn't give a name. So the cops wrote the report and gave it to the detectives as usual.

Good for you that you read the transcripts Matlock. Maybe talk to somebody that was there instead, before you go off with your self-righteous opinions.

KTLA News
11:39 p.m. CST, February 2, 2012

MONTPELIER, VT - Inmates working at a Vermont correctional unit's print shop managed to sneak a prank image of a pig into a state police crest.

The image is emblazoned on police cars, and 30 cruisers sported the design for the last year.

The official crest depicts a spotted cow against a background of snowy mountains. But the inmates' version featured one of the cow's spots shaped like a pig in an apparent reference to the pejorative word for police.

Vermont contracts with correctional facilities employing prisoners to make some print products, including the cruiser decals. Police said someone who works at the print shop changed the emblem from the officially sanctioned design.

A police employee noticed the prank on Wednesday and reported it. Police said the 60 16-inch door decals would be removed as soon as possible.

"While some may find humor in the decal modifications, the joke unfortunately comes at the expense of the taxpayers," Police Major Bill Sheets said in a statement.

O.T. From today's Suntimes

Editorial: Crime-fighting and humility best go hand in hand
Editorials

Crimes rates are like the weather. You have to study the ups and down over a long time, at least several years, before you can claim any kind of an important trend.

Veteran police officers know this. That’s why they usually are slow to credit good police work for any short-term drop in crime rates, especially murder. If they grab the credit now, they know, they’ll have to accept the blame later when crime rates climb back up, which inevitably they will, at least in the short run.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is new to this game. Maybe that’s why his administration, in a real rookie mistake, made a fuss less than two weeks ago when there were no shootings or murders in the city for a full 24 hours.

“This is clearly the result of the tremendous police work of the men and women of the Chicago Police Department,” Emanuel’s new police superintendent, Garry McCarthy, said then.

Emanuel got great press for that one.

But now the tide has turned. According to the latest figures, Chicago in January (even given that one quiet day) actually suffered a 53.8 percent jump in murders, with 40 as of midday Monday compared to 26 for the same period last year.

And are the cops taking the blame? Not that we can see.

Nor do we think they should.

Our guess is that the jump in murders had more to do with the unseasonably warm weather last month, encouraging more goofs with guns to get outdoors, than with anything the police did or did not do.

Emanuel and McCarthy are understandably eager to seize on any evidence that their new police strategies are working, especially given criticism from many rank-and-file officers that the Police Department is undermanned.

But they surely know what really drives crime — social woes such as unemployment, family dysfunction, drugs, poor schools and the like — and they surely know the limits of what even the best police force can do.

A little less bragging would be in order.

If she was your daughter/wife/girlfriend or whatever, you'd want her to get every nickel that she could. My only beef is that every nickel should come out of Abbate's pocket.

As far as the officers hiding him in the report (if that's true), good try, but you made a decision, one that a lot of us might have made. But sometimes you have to accept that when you roll the dice they come up craps. I'll be first in line to buy a benefit ticket for the officers.

Finally, to anyone who finds it in their brain to even remotely front for this jag off? On the first day of "man class 101" they teach you they you don't hit girls. Ever.

Off Topic But Real Important....

In our unit all of our ancient computers were going haywire.

It could very well be that the CPD systems are being aggressively hacked by the anarchists and occupiers in preparation the May Disaster.

Suggestion to everyone, limit your use of department computers for everything.

Suggestion to the department, why bother you never listen to anyone who makes sense.

This also begs the question:

How do the OCCUPY offenders get P.O.s information to splash all over the internet after they make a mess of a city or college?

They are already here, more are coming every day and will do this come the May Disaster.

Don't make it easy for them.

GOOGLE yourself and you may be amazed at how many times you show up and on websites you may not have thought of.

When signing up for something, unless you absolutely have to do not list your employer as the Chicago Police Department.

Better than a non-published landline home phone number ($1.50 a month fee) is to list it in a phony name and without an address.

Get a Post Office Box, and send everything you can to it, magazine subscriptions, vehicle registrations, cell phone bills.

When you get those "Privacy Policy" notices from your banks or credit card companies respond and tell them you want your information withheld for all inquiries.

The City of Chicago, the
CPD, the Credit Union, the FOP and PB&PA right now should be doing an information lockdown so hackers can't get our information. It would also be a great benefit if all banks that we have direct deposit with were notified to do the same.

Stay Safe, there are a lot more things you can do. Don’t make it easy for the bad guys.

My 5'2" daughter works in a restaurant-bar and I used the WHOLE Abate video as a teaching tool for her. They never show the whole video where he is leaving the bar; she goes after him as he is almost at the door.

She runs up behind him, no audio, but that's when he turns around and that is what people see.

There is no excuse for what he did but she was stupid for what she did.

I work with all four officers who responded. I know them quite well and feel it necessary to come on here and defend them. If you don't know them, shut your mouth and quit talking as if they covered something up because they didn't. The officers involved had no idea and she didn't either. If they would have known, there is no way in hell they would have covered it up. They would have called for a supervisor and did whatever they had to do to perform their job. She is lying in an attempt to get a bigger payout from the city and unfortunately, everyone is attempting to blame the poor officers. If you want to blame someone, blame the white shirts who knew this idiot was a time bomb and did nothing about it. Don't you dare blame four guys who are good, solid, honest police officers and good people.

The officers involved in this mess, are two of the best with whom I ever worked in a 32 year career. These are the guys you want coming to your house, if you need the police. Why we are so quick to criticize our own, when we weren't on the scene, and don't know the entire story, baffles me. In times such as these, we need to come together and become more cohesive. Making wild, unsubstantiated allegations about fellow officers is counter productive, even if it only on this blog. Rick Sherman, now retired.

Here's what I thought back when this all first happened (I'm not a cop):

Aside from this case I *never* hear about this sort of incident, especially not one ending up in a CPD officer actually getting in Abbate-level trouble. That tells me the only reason Abbate actually got in trouble is that there happened to be a camera around to keep everyone honest.

In turn, that means there must be dozens of incidents like this one where no camera happened to be around, and therefore the whole thing got whitewashed or dropped by the prosecutors.

Surely no one would claim that the majority of bad behavior by CPD officers, when it happens, is caught on camera.

That's the degree to which the Abbate incident damaged my trust in the CPD. It wasn't about this individual case, but rather about the fact that this one incident seems likely to be the tip of an ugly iceberg where cameras miss the 90% below the water surface.

Now, I still generally trust and like the CPD. I have a friend on the force (not super-close) and he is one of the nicest, most public-minded people I know. But the whole thing definitely altered my perception of the force.

Cops are people and people sometimes do dumb things or bad things. If I don't hear about these problems occurring, I conclude they are being covered up The privileged position of police officers in our society makes that an especially egregious betrayal of the public trust.

So there's an odd conclusion for you: I would trust the CPD and prosecutor's office *more* if I heard about *more* of these kinds of incidents, particularly ones *not* involving cameras.

When I first heard about this and what they were being accused of and even disciplined for, even I was in shock at it inspite of how chickenshit this department is. These guys are so, good, so straight, so ethical that if I'm ever a victim of a crime, I want them to get the job because I know the job will be handled right. Hennesey Wiliams(Ghetto playwright) stood upon his altar and gazed in wonderment at the august company that was seated before him.

On the old tire was his best friend, Rum Bottle Jackson. On the milkcrate was his woo-woo ,Ikea Aldi Zayre-Smith(pronounced smiff). Next to her on the shopping cart, Thunderbird Jefferson.

He thought of how this power was his Sword of Damascus. Always steadfast, Hennessey began to preach about Po-lice brutality and the Abatte incident;

"Fo sho and seven beers ago, I hads a dreamsicle, one small step for brother-man...He continued on for several minutes. During the high points of his speech, Ikea Aldi Zayre-Smith had spasmodic like head swivelling going on. These seizures were sprinkled with several, unh hunh's and you rights.

When he reached the apogee of his speech, the roar of an ambulance(pronounced bambalans) crept closer. Louder and louder it came until Hennessey could'nt hear himself. The ambulances siren song took the gathered crowds attention away. He could almost hear Thunderbird say, "Oh, that shiny!"

Knowing his friends had about a fourth grade education and the attention span of a three year old, he abrubtly stopped.

How could he compete with loud noise, sparkling lights and a shiny paint job?

Hennessey walked away disquiet,and his friends never even knew he had strutted away.

Quinn, Preckwinkle Team Up On Foreclosure Program

The state of Illinois is teaming with Cook County on a trial program in which a loan fund will be created to buy vacant foreclosed homes, renovate them and resell them to home buyers at low interest rates.

It's estimated that as many as 500 homes could be rehabbed and sold to new owners. Qualified buyers will get $10,000 grants to help with down payment and closing costs. They also will receive financial counseling to prevent the home from going back into foreclosure.

How can we fleece thee?
Let me count the ways!

1- Over pay for the properties;
2- Hire connected but unqualified construction companies;
3- Companies pad expense acct and use substandard materials and cut corners;
4- Screening for loans done by Revruns rather than professionals;
5- Properties are turned over to unqualified, irresponsible buyers with nothing to lose so no real connection or emotional attachment to the property;
6- A real possibility that these homes will need to be repeatedly foreclosed on again and again;
7- Homes are likely to be handed over to illegal invaders who could be legitimately deported causing ANOTHER foreclosure;
8- Will banks hold ANY responsibility for failed loans?

Again, what could possibly go wrong?

So there's an odd conclusion for you: I would trust the CPD and prosecutor's office *more* if I heard about *more* of these kinds of incidents, particularly ones *not* involving cameras.

the only thing odd here is your 'thought process', which, by the way, may very well be an oxymoron.

O-K---here's what we do. We change the numbers on all the districts. 025 becomes the new 015. On the night of the next full moon we hold a 'seance' in the parking lot to summon up the spirit of old Commander Sanford Neal. Floating through the mist he will tell the young unhappy officers how to survive, and live a happy life.

2/03/2012 08:16:00 PM

Sanford Neal? How about Mark Thanasouras? He surely can't tell anyone how to survive.

.......It happened again. Crazy 13th district Lt DS was accused of battering a PO. The CR was initiated. It's about time someone in this department takes care of this goof before another incident occurs Enough is enough.

B.S. no one whats to make a legit complaint. What has the commander done to address this problem? What has the XO done about it? I'd say nothing.

There are cameras at 99% of the bars in this city you dick head. If you think somebody getting shit faced and doing something stupid is portraying the public's trust then you need to go back to reality. Abbate is not on the job anymore and probably is no longer a police officer. You want to lump me and 99.9% of my co workers into you fantasy world of rogue cops immune to all law because of some fat jagoff did something stupid then go fuck yourself. If Abbate wasn't on camera, Abbate wouldn't have been convicted of shit. Do you know why? He never touched the girl. That is the key element of battery. No video abbate pleads to mis assault and he goes on with the police department. Be glad this shit broke the way it did and he is gone, but don't you dare act like you know who the fuck I'am and what kind of person I'am.

2/03/2012 04:48:00 PM
To Brian: You labelled me and the rest of my co-workers in blue as doing bad and getting it swept under the rug because it wasn't caught on camera. Well should I label you and the rest of your hairstylist co-workers as being homosexual just because I was getting a haircut(Im a male) and one of your male co-workers began touching and rubbing my inner thigh, licking my ear and blowing kisses at me? No that wouldn't be fair would it. This story is only sarcasm but maybe you get the point. Don't label all cops because of one fatass asshole.

I do not know Abatte and never met him, but you are exactly correct. If these fools would put their hysteria aside and watch the video with a critical eye, they would see the truth.

Yes, he was out of bounds with his actions, but he never connected. The bartender has no lasting physical injuries. She was not maimed, crippled or physically disfigured. The blurred vision and nightmares are all bullshit for her lawsuit.

Besides, she was foolish to block and put her hands on a raging bull in the first place. She initiated the physical contact. All she had to do was stay safely back and call 911. Think about it.

Why did she step in front of him and not just call 911? Because she is one conniving woman and she knew there was a chance she could make some money.

How could she think that fast you might ask? When you are constantly looking for a scheme to make your life easier, you do not have to think about it much. When you have evil intent in your heart and the right circumstances are unfolding in front of you, there is not a second thought. CHA-CHING is all those type of people hear.

Abatte acted like a jerk, but he got a bad deal at the hands of the bartender.

Ever.

An Howie and the Academy belittle returning military vets by stating that 'some of you guys are crazy'. Well just look at Crazy Howie-Chicago's finest. stop thinking your military cops are the nutty ones. Look in the mirror. Ask How the fuk did this guy get hired. He became an instant ass when he got his star? No We hire and train trash. That's what happens when you have people incharge of the academy with no background in training.

2/03/2012 12:44:00 PM

Howie Lodding is not a military veteran and he doesn't even have a formal education beyond high school. He made sergeant and lieutenant before the educational requirements were attached. Also, Howie was never and can never be a captain, if demoted from ADS, because he has no degree, but he can be an ADS in charge of the department's educational arm. How does that make sense? Plus, on top of no education, he is mentally deficient. Talk to him for even a few seconds and you will learn he is a dolt. He must have a heavy, heavy clout in the city that works only backroom deals.

Holy shit, same thing happened to me few weeks ago. I parked in a loading zone, put on the flashers, went in to pick up a pizza and came out 5 minutes later and a fucking dick head from 018 wrote me a ticket. Are their brains so filled with hair gel that they don't know what a loading zone is? Maybe they can't tell time? Can't read the signs?
My guess is it's a lazy piece of shit that needs to get his parkers and he says screw it, i'll just let them contest it. Assholes.

2/03/2012 06:03:00 PM

The reason is there is so much wide spread abuse of the Loading Zones and Standing Zones that certain districts and Revenue have been instructed to send a message.

The PO's and PEA's have been instructed issue Curb Loading Zone tickets in all areas : south of North Ave, North of Roosevelt, East of Halsted.

The Requirement is that Passenger plated vehicles must display an ICC permit to be in them at all.

For those douchebags defending Abbate, saying that it wasn't really battery since the punches supposedly didn't connect, lets imagine the following scenario. A gangbanger comes after a cop with fists swinging. None of the punches actually connect. Should he still be charged with battery to an officer?

Ok, your 5 more years gives you much better insight on things. My point was that IF (IF) the officers attempted to cover up for the big fat jagoff, then they might have to live with the consequences of that decision. According to many people on here who know the officers, that did not happen, and good. I'd hate to see anyone else take a hit over this goof.

My overall point was that over my time I've seen a lot of people fuck up. The common thread when shit happens is that "it's not my fault". If it's a mistake out of honest effort, then take the correction and move on. If it's something done with the full knowledge that it is wrong or illegal, then as I said, you roll the dice.

We may not agree on this, but stay safe out there brother.

Tony was off duty and not representing the PD correct? I would like to know what information is contained in the lawsuit that makes the city liable.

-------------

I think the lawyers are using the level of very special treatment he got in the aftermath as a ploy. If he was not a cop it would have gone a lot different for him.

In any case, how does one get past the 24/7 on duty thing. It is either true or not true. If one is more or less on duty all the time, than there is some level of responsibility that the city has for his "off duty" conduct. There is just no way around that.

They are either going to have to repudiate off duty cops entirely, or pay up quietly. I bet they pay.

You will not be able to find it because I never wrote it, but you made up a lie and used it as a smoke screen because you cannot attack the facts. Why? Because your vision is blinded by a bloodlust. That huge chip on your shoulder must be quite tiring to carry around with you.

Regardless, there is a provision in the law that applies when a public servant is victimized during the performance of their official duties. Variations are on the books in all 50 states.

Furthermore, rarely does a bartender or a lawyer, while in the performance of their official duties, run towards danger and possible death in order to save the life of a fellow citizen as would a police officer, firefighter and medical personnel.

And if you object to a specific provision in the law that protects a teacher or a senior citizen or a mentally-challenged individual, you are a bigger idiot than previously suspected.
