Failed Ambush
- Two Chicago police officers sitting in a squad car were shot at early Saturday in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood.
The officers were sitting in the car in the 3800 block of 13th Street about 3:30 a.m. when someone fired several shots, striking their vehicle, police News Affairs [...] said, citing preliminary information.
The officers were not hurt and the shooter got away, he said.
Reportedly, the officers were sitting on a crime scene of a vehicle with a gun in it from an earlier Aggravated Battery, so we'd guess this was retaliatory in nature.

Wasn't a ppo shot on a crime scene in 010 two years ago?
Unbelievable!!! Be safe and watch out for each other. The days of reading the paper or talking the phone while guarding a scene are over. Be alert never let your guard down because all the savage needs is an opportunity.
A PPO was shot guarding a crime scene 2-3 years ago guarding a crime scene, no one was ever charged, I think the dept did a nonsense/useless just cause afterwards.
just imagine what may happen during may--- officers downtown fighting with occupy and anarchist groups--- the leftovers in the districts fighting with the usual onslaught of violence that always comes with the warmer weather--- total burnout of the police department that is significantly undermanned and ill prepared to handle what is headed here in may--- it is almost comparable to the alamo or custers last stand....
Be careful bros, the natives are wrestless...
Fuck! I thought all those $$$years cameras were supposed to protect us...
I'm a civilian, and I care about each and every one of you fine men and women in Blue. God Bless all of you.
So which gang is McDumbfuck going to declare annihilation against next? Be careful out there, everyone! It is most truly us against them .
Ot: officers when you transport prisoners from your district to another, please secure your prisoners. You keep bringing them in handcuffed in front or handcuffed to each other. This is very unsafe for you and for others in the station, and please don't let the prisoners see the code on the key pad as I have seen you do over and over again. 016th dist officer.
Everyone should bid to 005 because it's the best district ever!
Jaysus! Sounds like a scene straight out of "Fort Apache-The Bronx". By the grace of GOD the shooter/shooters missed.

Hey asshole if you want to buy me an extra 3 pairs of handcuffs id be glad to handcuff all of them seperately. second of all get your ass out of the 16th district lockup and get on the street you dog ass!!
Officers not hurt.
Offender is in custody.

Great work all around by by 10th District, Crime Lab and Area 4 Detectives.
We were lucky, God was watching over us that night.
Violent crime rate is the worst in the nation, bold gangsters shoot at marked Police Cars (It happened to a K9 guy while driving down 75th street in Englewood a couple of weeks ago and was reported as a UUW). What will happen in the neighborhoods during G8/NATO??? We are going to be overrun with our back exposed. It is a good thing we have McStupid at the helm, because we can see how well he plans his strategies. They knew about the summits long before Rahm and Mcdipshit arrived. They knew about them while they were disbanding units that saturated high crime areas (hence a skyrocketing crime rate) and that were trained for riot control. They want a failed state, and their actions prove it.
I'm a civilian, and I care about each and every one of you fine men and women in Blue. God Bless all of you.
You have no idea how much your words are appreciated... Thank You and God Bless You
With all due respect you are wrong Second City Cop.
There are a huge number of people who care and respect the CPD. I know I do as do most of my family, friends and coworkers. Please do not forget that.
I would not want your job for $1,000,000 a year*, nobody tries to kill me at my job.
You see the worst @#&% stuff routinely, almost everyone lies to the cops for one reason or another, and a single mistake can cost you your life. Where you have to make a split second decision in the middle of the night betting your life when it will be judged by dozens of people sitting in a courtroom over months betting their next performance evaluation.
You never see people like me say?
Their is a reason for that. We do not get quoted in the newspapers or TV interviews, you rarely see us cause we try to obey the laws, do not want any problems and are willing to walk away from an argument, and in the words of Farnam "Don't do stupid things, with stupid people, in stupid places".
Best wishes and thanks to all LEOs out there.

And use the sallyport if your district has one. Otherwise, you are looking at time if something goes south as you walk a prisoner into station.
You're safer sitting on that crime scene than standing for a roll call with that goof Dean Stone in 013!
By my count that was the third one in the last eight days. Glad to see the Department making a big deal about WARNING us. Thanks a lot!
HEY GOUDIE!
How about a few words about this incident?
Yea, I didn't think so.
Chicago is about to become politically correct yet again. The reverends are demanding that Leo be removed from 7 and others also replaced by black officers. My God I hope its true. I could be one of the first out the door. Never let it be said that I was part of the reason for all the crime in the ghetto. Garry danced for them at St.Sabina. Lets see If he dances again.
Look at what just happened in Mobile Alabama....Terribly sad, but could have been prevented.
God Bless Officer Stevens MPD
Parked on 52nd & State back in the 80's writing a parker, I was surprised by what sounded like someone hitting the side of my car with a baseball bat or thrown brick. But when I looked to see who the whacko was, there was no one there. Then the light bulb turned on and I put it in drive and went over to Wabash to take a look at my passenger door. Looked like someone had hit it with a ball peen hammer. The shot came from a building on Federal and was probably from a hand gun since a rifle would have probably penetrated the door. No report made. No nothing. What are you going to do? Go door to door to 160 apartments and ask who took a pot shot at you? I just turned the car in at the end of the day and hoped no one would do a damage report. Why this war story? For the citizens who read this blog. So much goes on that is not reported. You only see the tip of the iceberg. Unless you are the police, don't be too quick to judge the job or the men who perform it for your safety. You really don't have a clue. Stay safe guys and girls.
Too many on this job are getting sloppy with their tactics.
I'm not saying that the police involved here were sloppy because I don't know anything about this inciden. But, I see bad tactics on a regular basis.
Traffic stops where passengers stand at the back of the car with no cuffs. The very scenario that lead to the murder of two officers in the '80s.
Officers on crime scenes sleeping in their cars, completely unaware of anyone coming up to them.
Officers who call out chases and only then realize they have absolutely no idea where they are.
Cops who rush into domestics or calls for mentals and put themselves into a tactical disadvantage against the very person they're trying to arrest.
Cops reading VINs into the radio while the driver is still behind the wheel.
Cops who get so overtaken by tunnel vision, they shoot at offenders when other cops are standing between them and the offender.
Cops who repeatedly forget to charge their flashlights.
Things happen. Everyone makes mistakes, but things have never been as bad as I see them today.
Always think about what you are doing. Take control early in your stops. When you are on crime scenes, position your car to give you the best view and the best escape. Don't be afraid to block traffic, even on a busy street for as long as you need to, or even park on someone's front lawn if it's the best tactical spot. Get out of the car every 15 minutes and take a look around.
Most importantly, never be in a hurry to put yourself at a disadvantage. The more you think about these things on a daily basis, the faster you can make the right decision. The more you ignore this preparation, the more likely you are to get hurt, or worse.
Too many cops are on their phone texting bullshit to their friends. Too many don't even think about tactics and I fear we are going to see a lot more injuries to police officers in the coming years.
12:30 Calm the hell down, Custers last stand and the Alamo? Districts will have at least as many beat cars with furlo's cancelled and 12 hr shifts, not to say they cant take front office people and put them on the streets, dont need 12 hrs to do that job, and maybe cancel days off for that week
Hasnt even started yet and your worried. CPD will handle it
16th District officer. Thanks for the insight. We sure wouldn't want it to be unsafe in your station. Maybe you should be in 007 or 011 where you could inform more police officers on how to be a policeman
Surprised this don't happen more often. Perhaps the G8 guys will utilize snipers?
Simple they have portable cameras that they make. When sitting on a crime scene, a district Sgt. should bring one out turn it on and record the event. Don't seem too negative about this one, think outside of the box, it could provide us with a great tool.
Here is another good fucking reason to stay out of Chicago. Sneed from the Sun Times has stated that Gov. Quinn will sign the Chicago Speed Zone Camera law. This is the new "tool" Racoon Eyes wants to "protect" our kids. Maybe the Racoon should be more concerned about our kids getting shot in the head in the out of control Ghetto streets. Guess not. Can't make any money doing that. City kids have a much better chance of being shot in the face or beaten to death than getting hit by a car going 31mph near a school or park. Quinn has certainly turned out to be a spineless lying coward and obeys the commands of his masters Madigan, Cullerton, and the Racoon. But a Sun Times editorial last week endorsing the Racoon's camera bill says for us all not to worry if there are any problems with the new plan. It states our Chicago City Council will make any corrections to make the plan fair for all. What? OUR Chicago City Council? 50 corrupt self serving ignorant entitled bastards who always wear their knee pads before visiting the 5th floor at the Hall. Imagine driving anywhere in this town going 23 mph on every street. What a Clusterfuck that is going to be.
McCarthy: "Mr. Mayor, two officers were just shot at while sitting in their vehicles protecting a crime scene"
Rahm: "Oh my god! That's terrible! What's the condition of the vehicle?"
McCarthy: "It sustained a gun shot wound to the rear quarter pannel and part of the trunk."
Rahm: "Ok then, sounds like it should still be drivable. Make sure the holes are covered with something, maybe white tape, so no one can tell it was shot.'
McCarthy: "Ok. And what about the officers who were in the vehicle?"
Rahm: "Reprimand them, and put out a new order that officers can no longer sit in department vehicles while guarding crime scenes. We can't afford to have this happen again, next time the vehicle could suffer greater damage."
McCarthy: "Ok. I'll get right on it."
-Fly on the wall
So how long were they sitting on the car. How long did it take the tow to arrive? I bet it took forever.

So, you're the one! Thanks!
City hall and Rahm E. really could careless about the Police!
Only issue that worries Rahm is: How much the Police cost the City in Benefits and Pensions that he is eyeballing in taking away from us!

To 2/5/2012 @ 1122pm.... Your a typical dog ass cop.. "turned the car in and hoped nobody would find the damage"??? Fuck the next guy right "brother"? Make the report dog ass and do what your supposed to do you lazy fuck. Im a supervisor... You bitch and moan about me if I dont do what I am supposed to do though right??
The response above was obviously written by a no year wonder boy/girl who thinks they can still lock it down. One day when you get some time on the job and have been exposed to the beast enough you will figure it out no matter what district you work in! Regards, ......a 15 yr beat pushing dog ass too.
The 10th district is a great place to work and learn how to be the police. I'm sure some pos, was going to take that weapon out of the vehicle if the officers left the crime scene. Trust no one out there and stay safe officers.

The SALLYPORT IN 10 where this occured hasn't worked in months because the city won't pay it's bill to the vendor to get it fixed.
Beyond day to day officer safety we may need the sallyport if we have to go bunker during the May Disaster. Are you reading this Garry? Do you care or are you watching the NYC Mayoral race for your ticket bact to the NYPD?

The "nonsense/useless just cause" was an attempt that in the old days would have been called a "Dragnet" or round up the usual suspects. A lot of work was done on that shooting. The officer is back at work now.
The point is to bring in all the gangbangers you can in the hope that one of them will be willing to talk about some guy they know and lead us to the shooter.
Did you expect us not to respond, to not bring heat on a gang when one of their members shot at the police. We want to bring them so much heat that it's bad for business; they may even violate the shooter for doing something useless that brought the heat.
There is a $10,000 reward for information on that shooting now, and on other police shootings. Now go out and find someone and convince them to talk.

..........
Kids on the west side where I work never cross at the crosswalks--they do the hokey pokey in the middle of the street. When school lets out it's like ants on crack running around.
Let's see how many cameras go to each area of the city.....is it decided by number of 'kids', number of schools, population, what?
It'll be the predominantly white districts that get the most cameras because those are the people who will pay the tickets---not the people committing the most traffic violations.
Not that anyone in the shit districts have valid driver's licenses anyway...or are driving cars they actually paid for....I know I will get one of these, and I am going to be so pissed!
I'm calling my alderman tomorrow as well as the guv's office.
FYI scc, the offender is in custody. 1st watch tries to stop a dude a few minutes later a block or two away, and he takes off running. Caught after a foot chase with the offending weapon recovered. Made admission to A4 about shooting at the police because they locked up his boy and were taking his car. Great job by all.

Why in the world would officers only carry one gun. That should be the question. It is a mechanical device and any part could brake at any time no matter how clean it is. Would you put your life on the line with one round.....

Check out the gang maps by the Chicago Crime Comission, every block on the following districts are controlled by the gangs, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 011 and there are many other districts where better then half of the district is controlled by the gangs, like 008, 010, 013, 014 and 015 . If the gangs only new it. With a membership of 250,000 they control the majority of the crime and there giving gangbangers more. How about giving gang members real jail time.

How about sending evey unit and area man power we have and send a message that the Police contol the streets.
Not handel your job and hurry-up and drive to safety. Every part of the city should be made safe by us............................

The lockup keeper in 016 is 100% right. Your excuse for doing it is not enough cuffs? $25 for a second set of cuffs that will last your whole fucking career out of your uniform allowance isn't worth your safety? You are a bozo. You might as well cuff him to your arm and let him ride up front with you in the wagon. Maybe he'll be so giddy working the lights and sirens it will distract him from plotting his escape and your injury.

Yes...
2 Counts of Aggravated Discharge of an Officer Occupied Vehicle.
I shalt not bore you with the chapter and verse.
Did we mention that's a Class X Felony.

We do care. Stay safe Officers. Thank you for all you do.
The offender was charged with attempt murder of an automobile and Ford Motor Company was the complainant. It is a $200.00 fine on the back of an ANOV.
The jagoff supervisor who can only focus on the lack of a report for a knuckle size dent in a car door that was shot is a very shallow and scary supervisor. Get a course in reading comprehension 100, you obviously clout appointed "inside" boss in a slow district. Get back to the blog when you have more than six years on the job in a real district. Missed the point completely. I pity you. No, I pity those who have to work for you. Asshat!
Safety, gear, mindset, attitude, fitness, ability. These are not words of magic, silliness or 2 year wonders. It's the very thing that can, and will, save your life. It's YOUR life people. It's worth $60k a year to put it in harm's way but not to remain prepared? Fucking unbelievable!
More handcuffs? More bullets? Clean my weapon more than once a year? But I only shoot it once a year! I don't care what district you work in or how long you've been on hte job. If you're out there on the streets, you're in the mix. Be ready, be able and willing to do your job. If that weapon feels awkward in your hands you are so far behind the power curve, it may be too late for you. It is a tool, an extension of your ability. Master it.
Master your positioning, planning, prep work, verbage, drawing your weapon-sitting as well as standing-reloads, off hand shooting, baton work, your work! It's only your life on the line. Are you worth it?

Tows come quickly in 10 as you know the drivers are paid by the tow so the officers were not there long.
The offender Terry Jones was charged wth two counts of a CLASS X felony. Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm at an Officer Occupied Vehicle doesn't sound like all that much in words but it is still a CLASS X FELONY.
