Off Duty Kills Assailant
A man was shot dead by an off-duty Chicago Police officer Saturday morning after he allegedly tried to run the officer over with a van he used to ram into the officer’s garage.
About 7 a.m., the officer was at home with his wife on the 7900 block of South Jeffrey Boulevard when he heard a crashing sound, police News Affairs [...] said.
The officer put on a police shirt, grabbed his gun and he and his wife drove around the block and into the alley, where they saw two men inside a white van, said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden. The van’s driver was attempting to force the garage door open by ramming it with the van, he said.
The officer parked his car behind the van, announced he was a police officer and told the men they were under arrest, Camden said.
That prompted the van’s driver to back up and drive into the officer’s car, which his wife was still sitting in, knocking the officer to the ground, Camden said. The driver then aimed the vehicle at the officer when the officer shot the man, Camden said.
The man, who was initially taken to a local hospital in serious to critical condition, died, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

I'm retired, thank God, moved out of Illinois completely and living in one of the southern states where this shit does not exist. Offenders and their families don't get shit. Three Men Shot In Portage Park

"CHICAGO (STMW) – Three men were shot early Sunday in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
"The men were standing in a parking lot in the 4200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue at 2:46 a.m., when a group of males walked by and one of the males opened fire, police said.
"A 22-year-old man was shot in the thigh and a 28-year-old man was shot in the back, police said. Both were taken in “stable” condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. A 25-year-old man was shot in the thigh and taken in “stable” condition to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center.
"No one is in custody and Grand Central Area detectives are investigating."

And like the story stated....if the officer had "time" to put on his uniform shirt and grab his firearm (oh, and his wife as well) then he would have had "time" to call 911. A shooting would have been prevented. We teach to "don't put yourself in a position that you will regret later". I'm glad the officer is ok but don't forget your training.

---I will have to agree. I never see squad cars on patrol and trust me I have looked. I have to run errands and rarely to none ever see a squad car. Unless, I pass by 016 District that's when I see one. I always worry that my place will be broken into and just will have to just accept the burglary report. Plus, there's well known GDs that live in the south end of 016. They run some sections of the streets and live right next to us, the irony. I bet Jody didn't know that :)

why can't regular law abiding people do the same in this city? howcome an off duty officer is so much more special when it comes to protecting his life than I am, as a regular citizen? i am not at all complainign about the officer here, he was threated with great bodily harm or death and di what the law and self preservation allow. but he was able to do it because he had a gun. i, on the other hand, in the same scenario, would be committing a crime :( props to the officer for making a hard but fast decision; but this is a right that needs to be recognized that ALL of us Illinois and Chicago citizens possess. at least that's one less bad guy to worry about. thumbsup!!

These inspectors are in the district nearly everyday fucking with coppers. And Why the fuck is an inspector making a surprise visit on a search warrant and writing guys up for silly shit? DUMB! I'm not a cop, but if I was in that same situation, I think I would grab my wife, too, I would rather have her present with me, than risk leaving her in the home alone and have the criminals get into the home while I'm outside looking for them.
Either way, it's got to be a tough call for him, though.

Not sure why he put on the shirt..and if so was the vest also worn? I would have prefered the element of surprise myself. And yes the Order says when a vhe. is the only weapon used the officer will make every attempt to get out of the way. But the order at the bottom says that an officer will not endanger his life in complying with this order. At the old round table they would have taken everything into account. How much time did the officer have prior to confronting the offender? Was there time to dial 911. The dept and what was ops is going to be looking for those "red flags" Had the wife been killed in the incident he would have had to answer for that. When the only crime is theft of Burg. your going to have to show that you were in fear for your life!

Yes, I'd be bitter, too, if I was given a company car, company gas, insurance and maintenance, and lost not one penny of salary, but got to make my own flexible working hours, had to answer to no one and had responsibility for no one else... so bitter.
