Mendoza Meets the Bus

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel insisted Friday that he played no role in City Clerk Susana Mendoza’s decision to pull a 15-year-old’s city sticker design because of concern it could contain symbols of the Maniac Latin Disciples street gang.

Mendoza has been taking an editorial beating for pulling the plug on Herbie Pulgar’s winning vehicle sticker design — and snatching away the notoriety earned by a troubled 15-year-old who appeared to be using his artistic talent to turn his life around.

But, the clerk will apparently have to take the heat alone.

Asked Friday whether he pressured Mendoza behind the scenes to nix Pulgar’s design, Emanuel replied, “No. No.”

Pressed on whether he agrees with the clerk’s decision to do so, the mayor did the political dance known as the side-step for the second straight day.

Even if we disagreed with the Clerk's decision to award the wanna-be gangster the $1,000 savings bond, at least she made the decision and is sticking by it. Voters have short memories, none more so than here. Rahm can't even do that.

This lady showed me more backbone over the last three days than most politicians show in a lifetime.

While WE may not feel it necessary to cave in and give the kid the money, it was probably a political necessity if she wants to continue a career in Chicago politics, and it cost the taxpayers ZERO as she's footing the bill.

I think she handled the situation well. The idiot kid won the contest and has the money.....end of one legal argument. The sticker design will not be used.....another good decision.

Rahm hiding while she takes the lead.....maybe the wrong person is Mayor. Susanna Mendoza has more balls than the bully on the 5th floor at City Hall.

I didn't vote for Rahm, but I did vote for Susanna Mendoza.

Some voters do pay attention.

That said, she has potential to overcome the corporate $$$ machine that props up the Daley/Emanuel regime. She has handled herself very well in public and may actually care about this city, unlike Rahm.

I could see her potentially cobbling together a white/hispanic coalition to overcome Emanuel's preacher patronage/homosexual voter base.

Mendoza got caught in this mess probably not through her own fault. Nice idea to give young kids a chance to win a nice prize and show off their artistic skills. As for giving Herbie his savings bond it probably was the best she could do. If she thought the Racoon would give her some cover she has now found out a lesson that many people have learned associating with him.

She did the right thing and even though I don't agree with her paying out of her own pocket the $1000, that is her personal decision. Politically she will fair just fine. Most people that have commented favourably on this situation live miles from the nearest gangbanger or have never seen one in their entire lives. Our Machiavellian Mayor was schooled by a 15 year old and in those situations its best to keep your mouth shut. On a side note how are you classified as "special needs" because you make poor decisions? Seeing this kids mother and his stellar father its clear he never had a chance but that is far from a truly special needs child. I like what Dennis Leary had to say about dubiuos diagnoses of special needs kids, "yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."

Herb Dilla won the contest.
Even though his entry had be later disqualified, by decision of the judge, he's entitled to the prize.
So what. As far as Andy Warhol is concerned, Herbie got his 15 minutes of fame, and then some.
Everybody can dispute what art is. We all don't agree that Norman Rockwell or Currier & Ives themes could exist in today's society.
Herb Dilla drew what he knew best,
"garage door" art. And the judges who looked at it were reminded of their own neighborhood alley scenes.
This what makes it all good.
We see all this crap art on viaducts, rail cars and abandoned buildings and apparently it's an accepted form. But not me.
I'm no fan of Salvador Dali's depictions, and those of Herb Dilla.
Neither works should be on a Chicago vehicle sticker.
Next year I'd like to see something in the style of good ol' Norman.

I listened to little Herbie's supporters, including Blake the Putz, describing him as "Special Needs". Herbie isn't special needs: that term is reserved for Autistic, Down's Syndrome, Spina Bifida, the truly Mentally and physically challenged, et al.

Not a kid who has behavior issues, glorifies gangs, has a rap sheet and needs to be at Lawrence Hall (one step above the Sheridan School for Boys).

His parents are a good example of why forced sterilization is a good idea for some.

I hope someone rats out daddy, but I'm pretty sure he is safely under the protection of Hugo Chavez.

You need to cut city costs, cut this. It's become a lightning rod for special interests, political correctness, and outside interference --now we're seeing a public relations firm involved.

Standardize the sticker; put a city seal on there, the requisite information, and change the main ink color every year.

This is just a tax stamp, and should not be fraught with emotional significance.

Reminds me of someone's "Bring a Kid To Work Day" at the Chicago Public Library. I simply refused to deal with the fifth grader back there.

"That is a child, whose name I do not even know. That is not a trained library employee with accountability. The child is not going to have access to my personal information. If the child makes mistakes in my library account, I am the one who's going to have to pay for them.

"No. Get me a librarian."

I got no argument at all.

This is not Babyland. Time to grow up.

THIS JUST HIT MY IN-BOX

FOP Files Suit

Yesterday, the Lodge filed suit against three lawyers and a former officer. All elected FOP officials have a solemn duty to protect your money and make certain that it is being spent judiciously. We demand the highest integrity from lawyers and union officials. It is the Lodge's contention that the FOP was wrongly billed over $200,000 for an appeal that was supposed to cost $60,000. An audit of past billing is underway. Action will be taken if it is discovered that monies were misspent. No attorneys and no Lodge officers, past or present, will be immune. The Board of Directors of the FOP will fulfill its obligations as your fiduciaries. No exceptions.

Hold it a minute there. Look back at her campaign promises...she is a true politician. She said NO INCREASE in City Vehicle TAXES...obviously a LIE because it was hiked...she might not have been able to control it, but don't run on the platform that you can. And she is at the helm for the dog licensing revenue. 5 if fixed...50 if not??? Taking that right for me to choose away??? Fines???? I'm sure there will be "Selective Enforcement" too. They ALL SUCK. This CITY FUCKING SUCKS....and you know who is 100 percent totally responsible for it??? The politicians. Period. And as long as there is one breathing soul that can pay a tax in the city, they will take it until there is no more....

Finally, a family with decency, integrity and some guts, and it isn't the Emanuel family.
Thank you to the Henehan Family for bowing out of this City of Chicago charade. And Remember, Rahm Emanuel had nothing to do with it by his own declaration. Rahm emanuel is a miserable coward.

City won't use any contest art for city sticker

By Liam Ford
Tribune reporter
5:23 p.m. CST, February 11, 2012

In another bad turn for a 2012-2013 city sticker design contest for Chicago students that last week became mired in controversy over gang symbols, the artwork of the runner-up winner will also not be used, City Clerk Susana Mendoza announced Saturday.

The “Chicago Heroes” design by Caitlin Henehan, a senior at Resurrection High School, was chosen after Mendoza nixed the previous winner’s entry because of questions posed by former police superintendent Jody Weiss and others about perceived gang signs incorporated into that 15-year-old boy’s drawing.

But because of “unwanted media and public scrutiny and criticism of her artwork,” Henehan’s family “has now requested that their child’s artwork not be used,” Mendoza said in a statement released with the family.

In the statement, Henehan’s parents, Marty and Maria Henehan, said: “While our daughter truly enjoyed participating in the design contest and was proud to see Chicago select her as the first runner up, what should have been a happy accomplishment in her life has now turned sour.”

Is Father Pfleger gonna give her a $1000 savings bond for trying -- or is she too white?

Tht's enough of this. The contest had a good 15-year run -- now it is infiltrated by criminals and pressure groups and political correctness -- and a public relations firm was starting to get into the act.

No more fun, too much expense, too much hurt. It's just a tax stamp. "In-house" production from now on -- city seal, relevant data, and change the main ink color every year. Everyone gets the same.

For what its worth while on patrol I met Mendoza by chance as she was walking to her house very late at night.
I had no idea that she was a state legislator at the time.
Seemed like a down to earth person who was as angered, aggravated and frustrated as much I was at what the lk's had done to that once good neighborhood.
Never told me she was a politician and didn't act like one.

If you have not figure it out (YET) then this little bit should pretty much clear it up for you, Office. That is all of you who work as Office....This guy does not give a crap about you, me or our families. At all! From the trib....

The records released to the Tribune raise questions about the accuracy of other administration claims. They included talking points used by Emanuel and surrogates to sell the camera program that highlighted this claim:

"Chicago has a higher percentage of pedestrian fatalities than other major U.S. and global cities — Chicago's pedestrian fatality rate is 68 percent higher than New York City's."

McCarthy repeated that claim while testifying for the mayor's bill at a legislative hearing in Springfield in October.

The claim is wrong, refuted by the city's own five-year study that shows Chicago with a lower pedestrian fatality rate than New York as well as most other large U.S. cities.

Also among the released material was a daylong email string among Emanuel public relations aides concerning the death of 6-year-old Diamond Robinson. The youngster was hit by a car late on Saturday, Oct. 29, as she crossed a South Side street headed to a Halloween party.

The Tribune reported on the accident on its website the next morning, and soon afterward, Emanuel's then-press secretary, Chris Mather, forwarded it to colleagues. As the email chain grew for hours, Mather and others attached comments that were mostly scrubbed from the copies supplied to the paper.

Days later at a news conference, Emanuel sought to link Diamond's death to his speed camera push.

"While we're speaking, Diamond Robinson, who was hit by a car near a school ... they're actually having her funeral," Emanuel said. "That is a reminder of what we're talking about today and the full price and consequences of what we're talking about today."

Emanuel's legislation, if it had been in effect, would not have protected Diamond. The accident occurred on a weekend, and the new law restricts use of cameras near schools to weekdays.

Couldnt agree more! Reading that BS and cocky article talkinb about "how endorsement for the FOP works" made me want to puke. There were good stand up policemen running for office and the FOP laughed and said "nice try kid, we like someone else". Madiagan? Mel? Emil Jones? Thats who we are endorseing? Protecting our pensions and best interests? Madigan and Cullerton led the pack in destroying our pensions! All the way back since 1994 (per the Tribune) when the State passed legislation to protect and rebuild, they stole and milked it! The FOP (Full of Poop)! Voting will be easy, whoever the FOP did NOT endorse, especially if its a not a Democrat!
-----------------------------------

Off Topic: Just saw the fop newsletter with endorsements for the March primary. I'm insulted that they endorsed the incumbent crap that has been leading this state down the toilet for the past twenty years, trying to take away our pension, putting their relatives and friends in jobs and positions to steal more of our benefits.
I understand the consequences of coming out against them, but at least have the balls to say,"based on their past accomplishmenst or lack thereof, the fop can endorce no one in the race. Maybe that would encourage some new blood to at least think about running against one of these monsters.

The names madigan, jones, burke, acevedo, d'amico, barrios read like a who's who of what is wrong with the city of shitcago, county of crook, state of illwhatsinitforme.

Why is it so hard to say, based on the kids affiliation with the mlds, his fb page, his past, and the likeness of the design to gang sign WE ARE NOT SUPPORTING OR USING THE STICKER. That's it, that all it would take, someone with some f'n balls!!! We don't need people dancing and scurrying around the issues. What the hell is everyone afraid of??? Why are they scared of pissing off a 15 year old punk, his trash mother, and his wanted (and missing) dad? WE ARE IN TROUBLE!!!

Because he has a lawy-yer....

It doesn't matter if he has a lawyer as long as you're stating the facts. You're probably one of those officers who are too scared to do their job because of .......wait for it.......a law suite or allegation. Don't live and work in fear. It wouldn't have hurt the city to state the facts, and show the face book pages that were posted, which after being posted have no expectation of privacy.

Dear Officer,
I often feel the same with 22 years on. We worked in an era where things were done diffently. We had bosses, bosses who knew the job. We still do,still, they're a rare breed. I feel your pain brother. We've seen it all. The advent of CAPS...what a disaster. We attended roll calls where you were inspected and the uniform meant something and you better be shaved, have polished shoes etc. Now...anything goes. It just was a different job. As a supervisor, when I see officers who actually go out of their way to investigate crime, I help them any way I can. I miss the old days, the good times, etc. We both know what I'm talking about. When we were the real police...Thank God...and I'm not being gratuitous when I say this, "Thank God" we have blogs like SCC and SLC where we can vent. We need to vent. I wish we, us old timers, "wheel gunners" could meet and just hang. No rank, chauffer driven...and just hang til whenever. Thank you SCC and SLC for giving us a venue. And guys and girls...if you do need to vent...please call EAP (peer support) it's all confidential.

Just thanks SCC for giving us the venue to vent..it's needed and your efforts are appreciated.

Be Safe

WTF, man. This is one of the reasons why we are so fucked up as an organization. First, STOP with the infighting "I'm MORE 'real police' than you" nonsense. EVERYONE here is important; we all have an important job, whether its protecting 'the homeland', chasing birds in a 'fast' ghetto, teaching new blood at the academy, or working in an admin spot to keep the Department moving. STOP WITH THE INFIGHTING - we are dividing ourselves while City Hall and the reverends watch and laugh. Second, this is one of the ONLY departments I know that has such open and unwarranted disdain for academy work. Are all the coppers working there the best for the job? Of course not. But the work done there is vital, whether it's training new recruits or in-service training for the rest of us. Academy service should be held in the highest esteem; it should be something to be longed for and proud of. Our best and brightest should be working there and at HQ. Until we start to adopt this mindset and demand it, we will continue to get what we have now - clouted positions and fractured ranks. Enough already. No one gives a damn about us but US. With comments like the above, even that is in doubt. Stop it.

Be Safe

I agree also wheel gunner 26 years, and i will retire next year with 27 years and 55 years old! I would like to stay on longer, yes I am in a "unit" it is OK I like the coppers but HATE the job and the politics! Your right was much better pre-caps! I worked in 008 and we always on afternoons had 3 wagons, 811-12-13-14-15-16-17, 821-22-23-24-25-26-27, 831-32-33-34-35-36-37, wagons 871-72-73, 806A,B,C,D,F,G. We have mission teams consisting of another 16-20 guys separate from the tac teams would work 1800-0230, we had the old gang crimes guys on the east end, great sergeants 810-820-830 tact sergeants Waltermath (RIP), Clancy,Red Conroy, Lt like Candella,Capts like Forberg,Hughes, a full neighborhood relations office,Eddie Sojka on days assigned to St. Rita, so many coppers all had cars. What happened? we are decimated!

Was at traffic court the other day and said hello to younger coppers in the traffic room, they turned their heads I thought WTF is so wrong with CPD! Simple answer "The fish stinks from the head down,"!

So Brothers and sisters I am done, will always and forever help out coppers and their families, the way the elected have structured everything they have made it us vs. the citizens, now they want to take our very earned and heavily contributed to pension plan, they think that Mighty Mike Shields will roll over and let them take our uniform allowance and duty availability like they have done to the exempts already! Don't forget the union fought long and hard to make duty availability PENSIONABLE! Mike I know you and your minions read the blog always, keep up the fight you were elected to "NOT BACK DOWN," no wavering if we ever stuck together and agreed on doing anything we are a POWER that cannot be stopped! LONG LIVE CPD GOD-BLESS EVERYONE OF YOU!!

I know the feeling. You will be OK -- just stay safe until you hit KMA day, then like you say go and relax, have a cold one. You earned it.

God Bless.

The sticker is not about "world peace" or "human rights" or "diversity" or "multculturalism."

The only "message" it should be sending is "I bought this sticker."

How long does a savings bond last in a crackhead household?

2/11/2012 04:28:00 PM

Ah! A trick question! Zero seconds because it never makes it in the door!

A savings bond will only arrive at a crackhead household in the event it is mailed or delivered there. Even so, it will not make it over the threshhold. It will be immediately converted to cash or traded for the drug within 250 feet of the household.

If it is handed over elsewhere, it gets cashed to get some green for a drug purchase or it's traded for drugs before it ever comes anywhere near the crackhead household.

Good question! Now can I be a detective?

"Then?"

To what previous statement are you referring?

Who is "they?"

Who is "her?"

What house was "set afire?"

You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself. If you spent 20 years in 007, it was by choice. Then deal with it. Nobody forced you on this job, and nobody but you forces you off it. And a lot of those Academy instructors are just as much "the real police" as you

Signed academy wonder

Sounds like someone has nothing to do but watch what everyone else does? Do you keep a log and take pictures? Do you live in a glass house also? Asshat

You must be one of the double dippers?

People with ethics and morals don't cheat the system.

Sickening. We were all forced to contribute $100 deduction from our checks to the Memorial Foundation. Our Commander said the Supt. Cline wanted everyone to contribute. Felt like strong armed robbery. Sure it is for a good cause but who knew the guy was going to take the top job with the, when he left CPD? I didn't like the way this was done.

2/12/2012 06:50:00 AM

Phil Cline pulled a scam and created his own after-CPD job. Like he needs more money than a superintendent's pension. He's a money-grubbing no good sob and he is making 150K off the misfortune of our fallen. Karma is a bitch.

Actually, I am too busy working and teaching to pay attention to the staff at the academy. But I encourage you to keep up the investigative reporting at the academy and post your findings in a blog. Too bad you do not have the balls to make a offical complaint or confront those individuals. No one is perfect, not even you. Carma is a bitch and you will be rewarded one day.

The City sticker should be an adhesive thing the same size as the license plate yearly sticker and go on the license plate on the other side oppposite the state renewal sticker. No more walking around to the front to look for a large decal that was OK in the 1940's. Time for something new, cheaper, not mired in controversy. Or like the motorcycle city sticker, a metal tag that screws to one of the license plate bolts.

Or just about anything except what they have now.

Or, more accurately, "I paid to support wasteful City Government spending."
