Worries About SS Irish Parade

As we close in on the "new and improved" parade, the neighborhood and the aldrecreature express doubts and concerns:
  • After a two year absence, the South Side Irish Parade is coming back, but not everyone is happy about it.

The parade was scrapped after complaints that parade-goers were getting out of control.

Arrests. Alcohol-induced fights. Countless injuries, even to law enforcement. It's not hard to understand why the South Side Irish Parade was called off for two years.

What's hard for 19th Ward Alderman Matt O'Shea to understand, is why anyone would want To bring it back.

  • Organizers not only plan to dish out $80,000 in private security, but also plan to launch a new emergency phone number to use on the day of the parade to call in incidents happening live for instant police response.

O'Shea admits the security plans he's seen so far won't cut it.

"I have not seen a public safety plan that makes the neighborhood safe that I'm comfortable with, nor has the Chicago Police department," he said.

Supposedly underwritten by a bunch of beer distributors and local drinking establishments, this has the very real potential for blowing up in their faces.

As to the direct emergency phone number. Last time I was at the parade the cell phone infrastructure was completely overwhelmed. I couldn't call my brother on the next block. Maybe 1 in 5 tries went through.
good luck.

Wow, forget about all the murders, home invasions et al. We have a real safety plan emergency. And this is a parade. He must have his iPod buds in during city council meetings. Lalalalalalala, huh? Huh? What I miss?

Now wait a minute here....

We are well-trained to handle G8/Nato but we aren't, apparently, well-trained enough to control a bunch of redheaded Irish people and assorted other parade guests?

Does anyone else see the irony here????

Seriously. We lost control of the crowds there and also at the Gay Pride parade, people who just want to cross-dress, dress up their favorite body parts, get drunk and so have to pee on things?

But we can handle G8/Nato with no problem?

Good grief Charlie Brown.

Maybe we could let the ANOV'd drunks from last year work off their fines by hiring them to work as security at G8? Deputize them! It sounds like they could handle the G8 people with no problem.

Just get them drunk, hand them some sticks and rocks and let both crowds go at it?

"Organizers...also plan to launch a new emergency phone number to use on the day of the parade to call in incidents happening live for instant police response."

Got some bad news for all you 'Organizers'. There's no such thing. Instant noodles? Yep. Instant karma? Possibly. Instant police response? Hell. Fucking. No.

One, there ain't enough police ANYWHERE to have a cop instantly responding to anything.

Two, the closest thing you'll get to "instant" is a copper on-viewing something. And guess what? Unless it's another copper needing assistance or something of a heinous nature, my self-preservation overrules any kind of proactive response.

Inviting mayhem into your backyard knowing full-well the potential ramifications calls for leaving nature to take it's course. We'll arrive after all is said and done to pick up the pieces and cut the almighty case report.

Oh yeah. For those of you who haven't looked at a calendar recently, this abomination will likely take place on St. Patrick's Day itself...A SATURDAY. So you can expect the usual miscreants to start imbibing ever earlier and quit even later than usual.

One more thing. Here's the new emergency phone number for that instant police response: (773) 238-8766.

Points to ponder @ parade committee:

1)If the parade is so great, have the executives of the beer companies putting up the money have it in their communities...lol, you'll never see that.
2)Someone tell me exactly what private security is supposed to do or what power they have in a public domain? @the private security guards...are you willing to risk a lawsuit for one day of work and who will pay your legal fees in the event you step in sh..?
3)Why couldn't the community vote on whether to have it or not?
4)The city already has a parade in the downtown venue, built for large functions such as this..why not celebrate there or have the parade route on 115th-/Western to Kedzie...oh,wait, no bars are there.
5)No more PAPV's...how exactly are the police supposed to respond to fights and medical emergencies etc. when they do or will occur?

Many of us in the neighborhood do NOT want the parade this spring, because things got so out of control in the last 2 years it was held. We do NOT have confidence that parade organizers have an adequate security plan. We are NOT happy that the mayor and CDOT okayed the parade permit over the alderman's objections. This has become a divisive issue in the ward.

In my travels, I've seen yard signs recently in support of the parade - in areas where people tend to have huge drunken parties on parade day, the kinds of parties that tend to spawn drunken brawls in the streets. Wonderful. I can hardly wait.

Its sad what this day has devolved into. The ORIGINAL purpose of St. Patricks Day was RELIGIOUS. It is supposed to be a day set aside to recognize St. Patrick for bringing Christianity (Catholicism) to pagan Ireland where the shamrock was used to demonstrate the holy trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to the pagan Celts. Patrick was an anglo-saxon slave made a saint by the Pope who further commissioned a special feast day in his honor for his missionary work for the Church. In Ireland up until maybe the last 20 years it was a HOLY day where businesses closed (even bars). The tradition was brought to this country by immigrant Irish to celebrate their heritage amongst anti Irish Catholicism. They are surely turning in their graves at the sight of young "Irish" girls urinating in alleys and peddlers selling stupid striped top hats with marijuana leaves on them as a way to show the "wearing of the green." Every Irish-Catholic who cares about their heritage should rightfully be ashamed of the way this parade has gone. Like so many other things in this country it has been taken to the extreme

I can fill you in on a lot about the parade. From day 1, the security company hired by the parade committe, S3, has been putting the blame on the police for not arresting enough people.
So, does that mean they will be arresting people, since there will be 200 private security people along the route? It's the public way, not private property, so they can't do squat. They cannot tell people to dump their cases of beer, not illegal to bring it to the parade, only to open it and drink it. They threatened to detain people for the police if they do not listen---NO CAN DO, that's Unlawful Restraint, since they don't have legal grounds or authority to arrest someone.
P.S. Plans still being finalized on police side, but a team of close to 100 north side officers dedicated to writing ANOV's will absolutely be at the parade, supervisors watching them. No plays to anyone. If they approach someone and give them a play, they get written up.
More info to come Thur night. Watch for it.
