Another Lawsuit
Two separate groups of friends were hanging out inside the Jefferson Tap & Grille one night in December 2006, stretching an evening of fun and celebration into the early morning hours.
Four friends, some of whom knew each other from Chicago's financial trading world, played at a pool table, high-fiving each other when they sank a shot.
The other group, six off-duty Chicago police officers, sat together after just attending a Christmas party.
No case is ever truly over until the lawyers say it is.

2006??? When was this thing filed? Whatever happened to the statute of limitations? I mean I know this is crook county/northern district of illinois but come on!!
BS case but if Leo S wasn't directly involved those poor bastards would be in the joint today. The city will pay and this too will go away.

Bottom Feeders ! (fart sound)...............
If I remember the civilians made some really bad remarks to the one officer who was crying over the death of his father. That is what started the whole thing. Traders are heartless bastards to begin with. This kind of stuff goes on all the time in bars. People are drinking and get stupid.
The best thing that ever happened to the Jefferson Tap Officers was Abbate. Fact.
Witch hunt
4 coked up dickheads got their asses kicked after starting the whole thing, now its mommy those bad men beat me up... don't worry son we will get an attorney and sue them, well the judge in the bench trial saw through their bullshit, now worthless bottom-feeding lawyers will seek a civil lawsuit because it's easier (preponderance of the evidence vs. reasonable doubt))
Be a man, take your ass kicking like a man, learn a lesson from it like a man. Soon real men will be on display at the Field museum as an extinct species. To be replaced by hair-gel, skinny jean, cell phone texting, 14 syllable coffee drinking subspecies: HOMO-homo sapiens toyotapriusis.

Leo S stayed far far away from this just like everything that goes bad he walks away.

You're an idiot. The first WORST thing to happen to these goofs was THEMSELVES.
A group of immature drunken hardons with guns and badges that thought they could get away with this nonsense. Stuff like this is a direct result of a few things, among them laxed hiring standards, clout, nepotism and supervisors that allowed officers like these to run roughshod to the point they feel things like this are Ok to escalate to this level. The sergeant on scene that did what he did (with video and cellular data PROVING this) is prima facia evidence that some people aren't responsible enough to handle this job, let alone be supervisors. And anyone who says Rick Flair saved these guys asses is saying that Rick Flair is just another clouted idiot that allowed the cover-up to go on. As many have said before, the cover up is worse than the crime itself.
The second worst thing to happen to the fellas was Abbate (and any/every other drunken cop that makes the news for nefarious reasons). Bet everything you own that Abbate's stunt will be brought up by the plaintiffs' attorneys to paint all officers as drunken yahoos that use their authority to try and cover up their stupidity - just like a few officers did after Tony beat the bartender. These officers aren't out of the woods completely yet either because their off duty "attempted persuasions" are gonna come back and bite them in similar fashion to how the Jefferson Park Tap boys are gonna get bit.
I wish the boys luck, because they're definitely gonna need it. Punitive damages can and will destroy families. They cause good people who sometimes make one stupid mistake to lose their homes, investments, savings and other assets.
These guys are "lucky" to still have their jobs, jail time was never gonna be part of the equation even had they been found guilty on the criminal end of this. Unfortunately, this is one benefit you can count me out of when the tickets make the rounds once they're told how big the check is gonna be that they're gonna have to write.

Don't forget the ON duty officers who are also getting sued for doing their job. The trial has started yesterday. Show them support at 26/cal.
Those yuppie bastards went looking for a fight and got one. Don't start complaining cause you lost.
So why should the city have to pay? They weren't on duty. They weren't acting as "the police". They encountered 4 loud mouthed traders who called out the other patrons, who just so happen to be police officers for their day job. The group, who happen to be police officers were forced to defend themselves and the loudmouths got their asses handed to them. This happens when you get drunk and cause trouble. You can't call out another group and then sue after they whip your ass. You started a fight, you lost, you go home and lick your wounds. Case closed.
How so? Abbate made this worse. Video of drunken cops fighting in a bar? Makes things worse. Paints a picture and you know the jury remembers Abbate.

The officer have a great attorney, Brian Gainer (former cpd) from Johnson & Bell. They probably have Levy too. These attorneys are top notch, and I wish these officers have the same outcome I did when they represented me in a case
Leo was never there so stop trying to put him somewhere he wasn't. He has nothing to do with this.
2006??? When was this thing filed? Whatever happened to the statute of limitations? I mean I know this is crook county/northern district of illinois but come on!!
happened in 2006 and the suit was filed in 2008.. you have two years to sue. there is no limitations on how long you go to trial
To all of the officers and Sgt.involved keep your heads up, you did nothing wrong.Everyone has the right to defend themselves. I spent a week in federal court, its not fun but you will be fine. The pool of jurors is much better than just cook county.
To the 4 assholes who picked a fight with the police, Fuck You, you got what you deserved, man up and let it go. But then again pussies always hide behind others, like lawyers, the pussies best friend!!!!!!
dont drink downtown. dont drink with yuppies and dont drink in the bars. If you do, then you better get some thick skin and dont ever tell anyone your the police. If someone wants to pick a fight let them pick it.. the hardest thing to do is to turn your back and ignore the idiots.. but, unfortunately in this day and age if someone is talking shit its exactly what you have to do. If you dont like it, then drink at your house or the corner bar in the neighborhood.

And the second best thing was Frugoli.... Third, Bolling.......
now if Abbet were there, i would say they had a case, not to mention numerous cuts and bruises.
I feel like there is no statute of limitations when it comes to police.
People really need to suck it up and move on. If this was an average Joe citizen no of this would be going on, but once the average Joe citizen finds out it's police all they see is dollar signs.
Judges shouldn't be allowing all these B.S. law suits.

Actually you sound like one of the many lawyers that post on these blogs to sway public opinion.
This bar incident was a bunch of drunks fighting with a bunch of other drunks, nothing more. LEAVE MY TAX DOLLARS OUT OF IT YOU DIRTY SCUM SUCKING BOTTOM FEEDER.

Do the "average Joe citizens" you refer to have the ability to wave off responding ON DUTY police?
Not only did the Jefferson Tap rangers put themselves in the trickbag, but they managed to get some on duty guys to jump into the bag with them.
The only good thing to come out of this is the change in policy regarding on duty response to incidents involving off duty cops.
In the future on duty cops call in a Sergeant or above and let them make the decision. Then document it.
The policy changed right? I forget. With all the training I've been doing for NATO my mind is filled to the brim.
Now for those of you supporting the cops in this incident I suggest you change one part of the story and then give me your take on it.
Suppose instead of being off duty cops the incident involved members and friends of the extended Daley clan. Suppose a Daley nephew waved off the responding cops. Suppose charges were brought and miraculously the defendants drew a very pro Daley Judge.
Yeah, it would stink wouldn't it?
wait a second,i thought police officers were 'on duty' 24/7. otherwise there's no reason for them to have a gun and a badge while not on duty? and seriously, sob story or not, no words are enough to ball up fists over. if someone threw the first punch, go at it. but as CPD (and remember, i was not there and do NOT know what happened) you should be an example to others and NOT react to mere words. you set the standard. expect more from yourselves if you are are a police officer.

They're already on display. You can view this species in its natural habitat daily on the CPD, particularly heavy concentrations of which can be found on tact and gang teams and other 'elite' units.

Off Topic, but did anyone see the news story on Lt G.E. the tact Lt from 006 dist?? Wow this guy is screwed!!! Beating up stroke patients because of unpaided water bills...pay your water bill goof!!!!
funny, hundreds of bar fights happen through out the city every friday and saturday night. 95 percent of the time nobody is locked up and everyone is told to go home... funny, not one of those bar fights has ever made the news..... so whats different about this one???
I'm sorry to hear Doug Prine passed. I worked for him in 015 as a new P.O. and you couldn't find a better boss. That whole watch was a blast.
Nothing good ever happens after midnight....
Your taxpayer dollars would not be at risk if the off duty sgt. did not act like an on duty sgt. and wave off the responding cars, that is what gave the bottom feeders the opening to go for the city coffers

Just curious, was this Lt ever merit promoted?
