School Strike Prep

  • The Chicago Teachers Union polled its 25,000 members Thursday on questions involving the school board as part of what one official called a "dry run" for a potential strike vote.

Union officials said they undertook the poll in part to figure out logistics for a strike vote if negotiations with the district break down. Under a state education reform passed last year, the union would need to get approval from 75 percent of its total membership before a strike could occur.

What with Rahm's latest Springfield tactics, we imagine this is going to go forward. Funny how Shortshanks kept the teachers in line by lying, promising them the world, passing the buck to Springfield, and Rahm can't keep up the pretense for a full year before a strike vote is going to go down.

This gives a few of our readers a bright idea - what if a certain Fraternal Order took an informal poll? Something along the lines of this:

  • Although the FOP is not allowed to strike, and any advocacy of a strike is grounds for immediate termination and dissolution of the union, would you, as a Chicago Police Officer, vote for a strike if the opportunity was granted to you?
It's a simple "yes/no" answer, has no effect on anything concerning the Department, and would be a tremendous slap in Rahm's face if the teachers strike and the police (and even the firefighters) said they would strike if they could.

Since the day I was hired I had planned on retiring on my 50th birthday. I've been making plans and looking forward to moving on from this Democrap hell hole of a State. If they make me stay an additional 5 years I will seriously lose my mind and possibly become a liability to myself and definitely to this city.

I didn't create this problem. I did what I've been told to do and them some. I swear to God, things will get ugly if this asshole Rahm's plan goes through. These thieving aldermanic scum should all be publically hung along with Daley. They'll be sitting on nice fat pensions without ever having suffered an injury on duty, much less the sheer stress of dealing with ghetto domestics for 20+ years!

Way to stand up for us there M.K. Shields. Just cave immediately and say "yes master" to these politicians. I say yes to a strike. The power of a stike is not to hurt he employer but is used a slast resort to get the attention of the business and the public that there are serious wrongs being done to the workers. A good example is the cataplar workers who went out when the compnay called for no raises for the workers for SIX years. Im sure that Cat apliar will not raise the oprice of their equipoment in the next six years, yeah sure. The workers in my opinion had no choice but to walk. If we did strike I think that our rreasonable demands would be quickly met. We are not asking fro the world but for a fair and just wage.

But there WAS something you could've done about it, hardass. YOU could've run for an FOP office and brought your vast political and financial knowledge to the table to singlehandedly make all these pension woes a moot point.

For someone that claims 20+ years OTJ, you sure are pretty naive to think any one person can ruin or save the state of our pension or has the ultimate say-so in contractual issues.

As far as M.K. Shields being a "yes man" --- nothing can be further from the truth. If you attended FOP meetings, read the newsletter, watched the news or read a paper, you'd see that Mike has been the most vocal president since you came on the job. He's been quick to rattle cages and call "bullshit" on things borne of both the Daley and current administrations, things your hero Bella failed to do during his tenure as a board member of your union. If someone was in the pocket of the mayor, they sure as hell wouldn't publicly lambast his "Enron-style accounting" practices.

And speaking of Bella, why don't you ask him about the overpayments to his lawyer buddy - overpayments paid by YOUR union dues.

Obtuse fellas like yourself seem to think things like pension reform and strategy sessions happen overnight. You're completely ignorant to the depth of and processes involved in the issues our union has to navigate daily in our best interests. For someone approaching midlife, you sure seem more cut from the Generation Y instant gratification entitlement cloth.

Instead of whining anonymously on a blog about something you know little about, get involved. Educate yourself on the issues that effect us all and then get on board and direct some of your misplaced energy towards the greater good of our union.

But I know your type. I've also been on this job for over two decades, and know first hand that most coppers that came on the job during this time are all bark and no bite. Most talk a great game, but few step up and put their money where their mouth is when it's time. And probably the most damaging aspect of this fact is that these people now dominate the supervisory ranks - but that's a topic for future discussion.

Yes, I marched around City Hall. Yes, I was on one of the busses that went to Springfield. Yes, I was at the pension board when Huberman was confronted. Yes, I do regularly attend FOP meetings.

I'd rather get informed and get involved than anonymously and indiscriminately point the finger of blame from behind the screen of a computer.

5/11/2012 03:18:00 AM

That's the second post with news reported in the media regarding the Chicago Teachers Union backing politically divisive cause. First it was the occupy protestors, now this. They have a right to believe what they want to believe, however they should only be able to do this in their private lives. No union should back any socially divisive cause. That's not what union members pay dues for. I personally think the teachers unions need to be separated from all other pension plans. They are a major cause for the drain on state and municipal pensions for other city and state workers who already have challenged pension funding. On top of that they are teaching our children to fight for ridiculous causes. That is not their job to pass on private personal beliefs. It's inappropriate and irresponsible.

Teachers should be banned by law from striking as all public employees should not be able to strike. Go to binding interest arbitration. Only teachers think that , despite recessions and near depressions, they are entitled to a raise and improved benefits every year. Lts have a study to see how much time teachers actually spend in the classrooma and " preparing lesson plans", not what they claim to be spending.
