Citizens Don't Believe the Stats

Who are you going to believe? The stats the CPD brass and politicians come up with or your own lying eyes?
  • Do you feel safe? If you listen to Chicago’s top cop, or look at recent inner city crime stats, maybe you should.

While summers typically turn violent, the first week of summer has proven otherwise. There have been seven murders in the past week. That’s down from 21 people killed the same time a year ago.

  • “Gang members in this case were so audacious they were actually selling narcotics right underneath one of our pod cameras, the flashing blue light cameras,” McCarthy told reporters during a news conference.

It might have surprised McCarthy, but it didn’t surprise West Side neighbors CBS 2 interviewed.

“There’s drug-selling on every block,” Valerie Newsome said.

The reality, according to resident, put McCarthy’s press conference into perspective.

McCarthy driving through the west and south sides, playing "gotcha" with Commanders and attempting to browbeat them at CompStat isn't going to stop crime. It also isn't going to win over the citizens who see the crap going on every day and hear the gunfire, regardless if someone gets clipped during that particular outbreak. Just because gangsters' aim is bad doesn't mean the "shots fired" calls aren't on the upswing.

Twenty-eight days isn't a trend - it's a snapshot. Killings are still up nearly 40% and blowing your own horn because they're killing each other at a slower pace isn't really smart either.

By the way, has the clearance rate fallen below 33% yet?

with this weekends temperatures expected to be in the 90's I suspect those 21 less killings in the first week of summer will be adjusted accordingly in short order.

Check back on Monday.

Whether you like it or not, crime has gone down in the city. I remember 25 years ago we were very busy. Then slowly something happened and crime decreased. I remember how the radio was always giving out jobs-serious jobs. But now even in the "fast districts" it is slow compared to the way they were just 15 years ago. The criminals themselves have become smart. A lot of them have realized they can make more money by engaging in property crime, selling cigs, fencing stolen good on craigslist or ebay, engaging in scams/white collar crime, etc... This is not just a Chicago trend but a nationwide trend. There is no denying violent crime is down.

Retired from the job and living in the Southwest suburbs. Fuck what any government tells me about crime statistics...When I go out all doors and windows are locked. Fido gets his patrol instructions and a nice treat. I always look around at my surroundings anywhere I go. More attentive when it is dark outside. All of us can be victims. Even carrying a weapon is no guarantee. Keep your eyes and ears open.

When is the last time you saw a patrolling CPD car?

If you called 9-1-1, how fast was the response? Did they have to come from far away?

Are you satisfied your taxes are being spent in a responsible manner with your safety in mind?

Are you aware that police officers pay 9% of their pay into their pension fund and Rahm wants to cut them out of the benefits they earned? Are you aware their Social Security Benefits that they paid for and earned are cut by as much as 60%.

I'm not sure what zone you are listening to. I remember 20 years ago and only the busy districts were ever in a "backlog" and that was usually in the summer on Friday and Saturday nights. Now you can routinely find districts like 016 in a RAP on a Sunday morning. Is it more crime? Taking more BS calls? Less coppers? Maybe all of the above.

What is your point? Are you living in the past by comparing crime stats from 25 years ago? Remember, police and streets were different and police had freedom to control the streets. We also had enough officers on the street. Times have changed a lot and memories fade. Violent crime is the same and kids are shooting kids and will not stop. Violent crime is up from the last few years. I am tired of comparing from 25 years ago.

I totally agree with this post but I would also like to add something. Instead of just voting to get rid of the politicians we as citizens need to call 911 every time you see something, not 311. If you live in 016, 022 or 008 or any other tax paying district you owe it to yourself and your neighbors to tell them to call 911 if they feel they need the Police. We are allocated to districts based on calls for service, why do you think 015 and 011 have more Police Officers there than we do.

One more thing I cannot stand when I listen to the radio and I hear a job dipsatched that is clearly a 2 man job that is given to a 1 man car. Listen we as the Police need to wait for backup on these calls, I routinely hear "10-99 squad I'll let you know" that is unacceptable and unsafe. You owe it to your family to wait for backup if the job requires a 2 man unit. Next time you answer up and say that think about your family and what they would do without you. Plus in the end we will be forcing the city to hire more Police, the numbers don't lie. Please don't go alone on these jobs, I for one do not want to go to another funeral.

Signed,
Former Area 5 Det.

Once again, let's fall back on what LTC Grossman trains us about this fact. It's not murders that count, but the number of times someone TRIES to kill you. I'll bet shootings are still up. And again and again, if it wasn't for medical science and trauma centers we would be over 400 dead already. Let's see what happens now. Everytime this idiot brags about a reduction he has to eat his words several days later.

What's happened is we don't make street stops anymore. They have given us a totally useless automated system that takes double if not triple the time it used to take to handle an arrest on paper.

I am not CPD and don't live int he ghetto. Here are my answers:

When is the last time you saw a patrolling CPD car? (I see them all the time actually.)

If you called 9-1-1, how fast was the response? Did they have to come from far away? (There have been two times in the last year. they got there within 5 minutes and didn't have to come far. I thought they did fine.)

Are you satisfied your taxes are being spent in a responsible manner with your safety in mind? (I suppose not, but if you think we're out here walking around afraid all the time, think again. Chicago is very safe. You just don't realize it because all you see every day is the bad stuff. Most of that is happening in places like 011 and 007, and yeah, there have been incursions into North Michigan Avenue and North Avenue beach widely reported on this blog, and those probably need to be dealt with better, I mean, if people are throwing bikers off their bikes and tripping runners at the beach, there should have been an army of you guys swarming in there so we can hear the sweet sound of club striking skull, but on balance the incidents are pretty rare, so rare that honestly I've never seen them. But I think my perspective would be different if I were a woman or elderly. We 6-2, 240-pounders seem not too much in danger.)

Are you aware that police officers pay 9% of their pay into their pension fund and Rahm wants to cut them out of the benefits they earned? Are you aware their Social Security Benefits that they paid for and earned are cut by as much as 60%. ((1) no, (2) I find that hard to believe, but (3) based on what I saw of your handling of NATO, I'd support paying more taxes to hire more of you and pay you better. I don't like what's going on with public pensions but don't just blame Rahm, because your little Republican "friends" have your pensions (and those of your teacher wives) in their gunsights, and if you know what's good for you, you won't vote for Mr. "Say Anything" and his anti-union party that has run amok and forgot its values. Those guys are no good for you.)

Maybe if they made some Detectives over the last 5 years the clearance rate would rise. Same offenders keep shooting because there is not enough personnel to do a follow up investigation, and don't see any risk if they are not caught on scene. The sad part is every year great Detectives are retiring without being able to pass on the knowledge they learned throughout their career.

Reminds me of when we did a search warrant and the girl who lived at the house had a warrant and used her link card to get the bail money. She was so nice and she took out $400, when the bond was only $375, and told us keep the $25 for our trouble. Slash our pensions and benefits but let these fucks bleed our resources. Romney: We Don’t Need ‘More Firemen, More Policemen, More Teachers’

Mitt Romney rebutted President Obama’s call for aid to state and local government to prevent layoffs of public employees by bluntly insisting that government payrolls needed to shrink, even if it meant fewer firefighters or teachers.

“He wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers,” Romney said in Iowa. “He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

Come people, you can't blame McCarthy or the police for the actions of thugs. Anyone who stands on the corner for hours should know that he is at risk of getting shot. He takes a chance and ends up getting killed. This so called "victim" got what was coming to him. Let's not finger point.

6/08/2012 12:16:00 PM

Well. Standing on the street corners for hours on end is not tolerated within the financial district of the city, why is it tolerated on the south and west sides then?

Oh, we're down 98% if you look at this same time period of two hours from last year. Pure bullshit.

We still have over four hundred homicides a year and victims shot are grouped into one incident even when there are multiple victims.

No one believes their "it's too hot near the water at the beach" bullshit any more. People are waking up slowly and understanding that they lie like all communists do; every time their mouths open.

If mcflurry is pissed off about detectives not being intergrated within the district, just talk to her newly promoted merit hack female commander from 010, she believes that the robbery team on the district should not investigate robberies, according to her the detectives should do that. But hey go write a parking ticket, mover and a contact card that will solve all crime. You guys will clear crime by 100% and you will not need any new officers. Comstat is useless but we have bosses with no sense of rather balls to speak out.

Not even a Friday night yet and already some shithead blown away by gunfire in 008. 2:00 AM 5100 S. Archer Ave. The gangbanging thugs are getting even more brazen, no longer content to contain their shooting matches to just alleys, front porches, and gangways. I hate to think what the weekend statistics will be like, target practice especially anywhere east of St. Louis, 51st St in the heart of crown town. I have noticed an increased and more frequent car patrol throughout the area in these past few nights. I worry for those officers and I pray that they get back-up when they need it.

OFF TOPIC, but oh, so interesting:

City workers are REMOVING speed bumps in the area of 47th and Michigan, maybe 48th and Indiana, or thereabouts. I think my relative didn't want to be too specific, but I'm sure someone who pushes a beat car can give us the exact location...

These speedbumps are on the side streets surrounding a local school.

The City plans to install speed CAMERAS there, instead. You know, AFTER THEY REMOVE THE SPEED CONTROL DEVICES from the surface.

So, it's all about safety, Rahm? It's all about the children's welfare, Rahm? If we only save one life, it's all worth it, Mr. Quinn? LIARS.

You have just proven it's all about the money and it's ONLY about the revenue-generating cameras. SHAME ON YOU. Removing speed bumps, so people will, of course, be able to drive faster in a school/park zone, then pay fines they would NEVER have to pay, if the speed bumps were still in place.

This is lower than low.

6/08/2012 09:34:00 AM

What they will really be doing is meeting with gang leaders to broker dope territories, street taxes, and gang alliances.

Those dope sales, street taxes and gang alliances will be funneling money and campaign workers into alderman's campaign war-chests and eventually the mayor's and his pals.

They politicians think that will do more good than hiring more police and seeing that their pay, benefits and pensions are secure.

Here's one for McCarthy , go into district front office and see if you can find all the police officers the commanders are hiding on the second watch , ghost cars , caps , parks , foot patrols , review and commanders office . It would give you some more respect from the grunts in the beat(blue and white car) A game of hide and seek , but when you find out you've been played , dump the commanders without getting permission from the puppet master.

Calls which use to get three or four cars and a supervisor are now just getting two and often only one car responding. Because there are fewer and fewer experienced officers and supervisors responding there are a lot of serious mistakes being made.

I never want to hear anyone say the phrase, "We have to do more with less." Screw that! Let Maggie's Flowers do with less or some other department do with less. I also don't want to hear, "We are running the Chicago Police Department like a business."
This isn't Wal-Mart or Harry's Hot Dog Stand. This is an army in the field facing an armed insurgency that needs more than the veneer of everything it takes to do it's job but a depth that we have not had in many years.

Who cares if we have more aggravated batteries because medical science keep them alive. 25 years ago, the ER could not save that many shootings. Today they save a higher percentage reducing the amount of homicides. But, crime is down from 25 years ago. I guess we can let another 500 retire before the city hires more recruits. Asshat

On the matter of SOCIAL SECURITY benefits being cut for people who get Public Service Employee Pensions:

Both Senators Barrack H. Obama (held Rosty's old Senate seat) and Hillary R. Clinton both signed on as co-sponsors of bills which would restore the Social Security Benefits that Public Service Pensioners earned and paid for.

Those bills never got out of committee, and onto a Republican Presidents desk. What were they waiting for, a Democrat in the White House to set things right while pensioners died off never getting what they paid for.

Did they know this bill wasn't going anywhere but it made them look good?

Why after three plus years of BHO in the White House he couldn't make it so on one of his vacations?

Were they waiting for Mrs. C. to join him as V.P. for a perfect Socialist storm?

We need to get our own credentialed reporters and ask, BHO and Rahm and McGeezze-go-back-to-friggin’-New York-Already these hard questions, live, unedited and get them on the air and on the web.

Ironically....the protests in Wisconsin regarding their pension reform is very misleading.

They do not put into the pension... not one dime. Therefore, they are noncontributory pensions, which not only gives them a sweet pension without contribution, but still qualifies them for FULL social security benefits. The words in Rostenkowski's bill is for employee contributory pensions. Paints a different picture on what they are fighting for in Wisconsin. All they are trying to get them to contribute is 3%. However, once they contribute, they lose ss benefits. Our pensions cannot compare, at all. Apples and oranges!

Firefighters and police cannot strike in Illinois. It is grounds for immediate firing. Advocating a strike is grounds for immediate decertification of the union.

Laws changed in response to the firefighters strike of 1980. I remember that one, cops were detailed to every firehouse. It caused deep divisions within the CFD. If you ever see a retirement poster or party poster for CFD and it has a barrel and flame logo on it that means "Brotherhood of the Barrel."

Those were the guys who went out on strike . They stood around barrels burning wood to keep warm.

The non strikers are are not welcome at such gatherings although most of the CFD has turned over since then.

If you are retired then move along. Get a life and find new hobbies. Move out of the state. The officers assigned to 016 aredoing a great job and I support them.

Integration will occur via a synergistic paradigm shift of interdependent networked sector parameters

In regards to that Fire Fighter neighbor of mine and striking.

He said they were discussing tactics that would make a lot of noise by leave the capabilities of the CFD intact.

It might look like a strike, pickets out in front of houses but the apparatus will be fully manned. Going door to door off duty to gain support. Having someone, off duty, hand out fliers to crowds at fire scenes.

I told them that's what they should have done back in 1980.
