Rahm Pleads for Labor Peace

Of course, he won't do anything to ensure the peace, but he'll blame everyone else except the face in the mirror:
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel acknowledged Tuesday that 90 percent is a “huge number” for the Chicago Teachers Union to achieve in its strike authorization vote, but he’s holding out hope for a pre-strike settlement.

“Let’s work together, find common ground, find partnership, reminding ourselves …. [of the need to] work together to better serve the taxpayers and our main constituents, “ the mayor said.

  • Emanuel pushed for a change in state law that raised the strike authorization threshold to 75 percent, a benchmark so high, at least one education advocate with ties to the mayor predicted that it could never be met.

Instead, the Chicago Teachers Union roared passed that benchmark, fueled by their anger against a mayor who stripped them of a previously-negotiated, four percent pay raise and tried to muscle through a longer school day.

It would seem Rahm underestimated his charm factor by a wide margin. Good luck teachers, you're going to need some strong spines in the days and weeks ahead. Ninety percent is a good start.

This is an extremely easy. 90 per cent of teachers vote to strike. I would say 80 per cent labor in general would vote against the mayor. I'm sure 90 per cent of Fire dept as well as 80 to 90 per cent of police as well. All we have to do is remember this when it comes time for elections. Power in numbers which is what Union is all about. This guy is about breaking unions. Let's see who wins

Rahm needs to give the teachers whatever they want. karen lewis has him by the balls..

the teachers are what's preventing all those little gang banger riff raffs to be cruisin the city causing crimes.

the teachers are actually saving the city money by keeping a little gang bangers occupied and off the street.

I forgot they lost their 4%--so now, McTutu has to come up with a whole bunch of money to cover that, plus another raise?

Don't let him fool you. The money is there, the king just wants to spend it on what he wants to.

Plenty of money to pour into community colleges, etc.

Somebody ought to look into his claims that all of this new shit is being funded by 'private donations.' In this era of belt-tightening I don't buy it. More likely, .01% is privately funded.

Helllloooooooo media?

A 90 percent "yes" vote is impressive, but more telling is the fact that less than 2 percent voted against calling a strike. For whatever reason, sick leave, LOA, etc., 8 percent of the union members did not vote. Imagine if we could muster that type of solidarity.

You guys say a union with balls. It's not the union it's the members they stuck together. I have no opinion of shields and his team good or bad, but it does not matter what they say or do if the members stick together. Rahm just offered a b.s. overtime and you guys can't even stick together and not work it to show were gonna stick together, you don't need the F.O.P. no voluntary overtime and watch the city give in.

Wonder why the other unions are so quiet on this? Shouldn't they be loudly backing the teachers?

I'm talking our silly pretend unions, that are just excuses for elected members to host golf outings and eat steak dinners. I mean the REAL unions.

The Teachers have a right to be pissed; remember they were promised a 4% raise that Rahm said the City could not afford. Then he gave bonsuses to his Charter schools! The goal of the City going back to the concept of Community Councils picking Principals has been to break the Union and then put the blame for the failures of the schools on anyone but the City. Rahm is a bully and he must be confronted or we and our families will suffer. Remember, we don't get the option of working for a Federal Agency for a few months where we can make millions the way he did.

This is just more of the same "manufactured crisis" BS he's known for. Bread and circuses for the TV viewers. Both sides are on the same team. The teachers will get what they want. And he'll continue to get all their votes, along with money kicked back into his campaign and other favored 501(c)3 "non-profit" causes...and Karen Lewis will celebrate by eating a small village somewhere.

91% of CTU members voted (19,614 out of 26,502 total). 98% of votes cast voted yes for the authorization (19,235), 2% voted no (379). If a contract is reached, we vote again on that. I'm not a big union person, but they take my dues anyway, and the board is not negotiating in good faith. They started off the school year by breaking our current contract, citing (undisclosed) budget shortfalls, while giving themselves huge raises.

the teachers need to not back down on anything now. they have rahm and just because he is now trying to portray himself as the victim the teachers shouldn't pull back the throttle at any point. our cps teachers go through so much with the gang bangers in schools. they deserve recognition and rahm is wrong for trying to take it away from them. stay strong and keep up the unity teachers. good luck.

[and totally ignore and/or forget that I, TD 9.5, would have continued to positively shit all over you, if your strike vote had failed to garner the mandatory 75% of the teacher's union members voting to strike as required by state law. Now that you have a gun to my head, I am willing to play nice, at least to your face. Now, let's all work together. Peace out.]

We don't have a union. We have a Moose Lodge with guns. It doesn't matter what FOP wants. We don't have the ability to strike. The city can drag it's feet, declare an impasse, and take it to the hand-picked arbitrator. The city can ask for the moon in arbitration and if it is able to take anything away from us and keep the raises to 0%-2% per year, they win. If we keep everything we have, no skin off the city's nose. We have to live with any decision while the city can vote it down. I have no faith in gaining anything. I just hope we hold onto what we have now.

The 10% ass kisser question answered. Yes votes counted as yes votes only. No votes and ballots unused counted as No votes. The No vote was actually 2%.

The reason why teachers voted now was that they were still in the city and together, not on vacation. If the teachers waited until the arbitrator, the No votes (more people away) would be larger. 9.5 and the Buzzard wanted teachers to wait to vote becauses of this.

The 4% promised to the Teachers was about 80 Million. He offered 130 Million to the Principles in discrectionary funds ! (Sorry about the spelling) He has the cash, he just does not want to give it to the Middle Class. He wants to bring them down instead of demanding the poor better themselves!

Would you care to tell my why Teachers have become the Enemy? Is it because in the Dot-Com boom of the 90's every one coming out of College wanted the 70 to 80 Thousand dollar Middle management jobs? Now they are gone and guess what?Too fuck'in bad , you made your choice and so did ALL the Unionized City workers .City of Chicago Unions need to stick together!

If there is a teachers strike and on opening day (when the State tallies up total attendance), would zero students mean 0 dollars for CPS?
That big push for all the chittlins to be in school on the first day just to get the years tax stipend would be a disaster for Rahmberg.
Gotta hurry up and get those "Save the Children" speed cameras installed.

When more stories like these start popping up, more parents will be marching behind the teachers. Great story in Center Square Journal about teachers being "displaced" due to the longer school day. The school in question is literally blocks from Emperor Emanuel's back yard. Parents don't like seeing favorite teachers canned.

Support the teachers with professional courtesy; give them a pass on minor traffic if it comes out during the stop they are a CPS teacher. Many have bumper stickers or something else, like a windshield parking pass that might be a "clue" to the observant eye.

They were CONTRACTUALLY GUARANTEED a 4% raise. And Rahm Emanuel, emperor of Chicago, decided to violate that contract.

I'm a teacher and the money is definitely there. When Arne Duncan left he was making approximately 201K. Now that job title has gone up more than 25% with Jean Claude Brizard making $250 + Merit pay? They also fly in on a daily basis people from Texas (Wireless Generation Co.) to "train" us. A complete waste of time & money. They put them up in nice hotels in downtown.
