Sounds like fun. Gas @ $4 a gallon to and from there, the aggravation and danger of savage gang bangers who's community doesn't even want you there, treated like crap by the majority of micromanaging- clueless-merit CPD bosses, most likely in a non functioning air conditioning vehicle with 100,000 miles on it on a 95 degree day, open yourself up to CR heaven jeopardizing your job, having a states attorney try to falsely prosecute you for bogus civil rights violations, have countless cell phone cameras recording you from every corner, and for a mayor who will F**K us on our next contract. They could make it double time and my eyes still wouldn't even flinch. Sure I need the money but my life, job security, and my blood pressure is more important. I'll enjoy my day off attending a SOX game with the free tickets we received or bring my kids to the Dells. This department wants to wave a few bucks in our face for this overtime like we are desperate fools instead of putting recruits in the academy! Funny, like most other comments, why set yourself up for the number of negatives that can happen for what, a little overtime? 53/55 dollars an hour? Dealing with savages and shit bosses who are stressed out from the powers that be? The negatives outweigh the positives ten fold!

There are a lot of bitter people on this job and on this blog. It makes me a bad guy because I am taking my family on a 2 week vacation to California and Hawaii later this year so this ot will come in handy. I work hard and my family deserves a nice vacation and this will offset some cost. I cannot see why people have to get pissed about others who want to work it. Please stop wasting your money, and discontinue your membership to the F.O.P. Surely you can find a better use for the monthly dues you pay. All issues coming to the forefront in recent times are manpower related. Running from job to job to job? Denied time due? Commanders suddenly citing G.O.s on furlough extensions? First/Third watch cars going out as 99? And it has taken time, but the media may have started to notice. CBS Evening News did a story on Chicago and the increase in murders. So please, feel free to give the city the chance to solve their problem in the most cost effective way possible, while ignoring the core problem of a department that has lost a third of its' manpower in just over a decade.

ok, keep tellin yourself that son. Ive met people who have worked in 016, 017, 020 etc for their entire career... clueless. And no, they are not good coppers. Im not trying to sound like a hardass at all. By no means am I some "gung ho badass west side ranger" who runs and guns and kick skulls around all day. Ive been on long enough that you dont judge a guy because hes a hard charger or not... You judge people about how they interact, talk to you at work and have fun or not. all the 5 year kids think that anyone who runs and guns is a god.. when in reality they might be a hard worker but a complete hand job. BUT, I have worked with some people who came into units with a phone call who worked in some of the above listed districts and went to 005, 006, 011, 015, 007 and freaked out at every little thing. calling ten ones when they hear gunshots in the distance(true story, happened when the brownings were still up and gunshots usually happened every 20 min). They have no idea how to talk to the animal... not scream and motherf*ck him every second but actually talk to the animal. The animal talks back to them and they look like a lost puppy who doesnt know what to do. not to mention if they get a good felony arrest.. well, that will take them about 10 hours to do because they are clueless.. now a days I really dont care if your a hard charger or not. but, if you take a group of guys who worked in 007, 003, 011, 015 for an entire career against a group of guys who have been hiding in 016, 020 or 017 the entire career you know exactly who is the better guy to have on the street and get stuff done. dont try to compare a guy who has had to work in the fast districts to someone working in sleepy hollow. to be frank... they dont know what the hell they are doing. We take the overtime during the summer violence which takes the Mayor off the hook (from hiring 500-1000) cops and leaves running around during the short staffed winter months. A few scraps now - we will once again pay later...we need new young bodies to pay into the Pension system kids! Everyone has bills, let's not beg all at once! United we must stand, or divided we shall surely fall.

Everyone can make their own decision on this, for their own reasons. But the bottom line is if you do this you are somewhat of a scab.
Now you can argue that its no different than Sp.Employment, and in fact it is better because at least it is at time and a half. But at least with Sp.employment it is year round, seven days a week.
They are using you when they need you and in the long run it will endanger us all. Do you want backup to be minutes away because there aren't enough police officers on the street on a regular basis? Because that is what this is, you are a sell-out.
Sorry but this is an opportunity to make cash,myself as a 26 year veteran could get it if I want it,but both my kids graduated college,and now it is time ti let the younger coppers make some dough! You know what is bullshit? the copper who thinks "all for me", the old greedy bastard who sucks up every OT thing they can even when they don't need it!
I know a copper retired about 3 years ago worked everything,has 3 MILLION in the bank,but you know what? he is not happy now,and was not happy then!
Advice for the young coppers TAKE IT WHILE IT IS THERE! It is $335.. TAKE HOME! It really helps pay tuition, use for a vacation from this shithole! There I said it!!

Sign up for all the "only when we absolutely need you" overtime you can get and then wonder why you are eating cat food when you are 70 years old because there is no pension fund left because they never hired anyone to pay into it.
