Less Aldercreatures = Less Waste
Almost a year ago, Northside posted this comment comparing the number of aldercreatures to those of other cities. If Rahm was truly interested in saving some real money, instead of nickel and dime-ing everyone to death, this would deserve some serious consideration:
====================
WHY TWENTY-FIVE CHICAGO WARDS? TRY SEVENTEEN.
The U.S. Census Bureau is the source of the final 2010 decennial population data for the nation's eight most populous cities. The respective number of city council members is in parentheses.
1. New York City...8,175,133 (51)
2. Los Angeles......3,792,621 (15)
3. CHICAGO...........[see below]
4. Houston..........2,099,451 (11)
5. Philadelphia.....1,526,006 (17)
6. Phoenix..........1,445,632 (9)
7. San Antonio......1,327,407 (10)
8. San Diego........1,307,402 (8)
___________________________________
TOTAL (7 CITIES)...19,673,652 (121)
3. CHICAGO..........2,695,598 (50)
Excluding Chicago, the aggregate of the seven most populous cities in the nation have an average of less than 17 city council numbers per capita.
While New York City has a population over three times larger than Chicago, they have only 51 city council members, a mean of one per every 160,297 residents. Chicago has a mean of one alderman per only 53,912 residents.
WHY?

Think of the savings, not to mention the reduction in graft, crooked contracting and having to divide the corruption pie so many different ways.

Chicago has 40 alderman to many
rahm let's start saving some money for chicago taxpayers
Savings go even deeper if you figure we could probably shutter at least one prison to house the alumni of our past city councils!
Rahm and McCarthy say "and the manpower situation is fine....we have the most officers per capita of the largest cities in the country." Why does that per capita argument fly when talking of coppers but alderman are hands off?
Cut the number and give them term limits. No more career politicians.
Chicago has over a Million Ilegal Aliens,The real population is three and a half Million. We are numero uno.
This means we are 4x over the other cities with aldermen. So multiply all their expenses and salaries by about 40 extra aldermen
Thanks SCC for making this a post. I will try and get my big mouth into a budget meeting with this comparison of what McCarthy said last week, as quoted in the Sun Times:
Testifying at City Council budget hearings, McCarthy argued that Chicago has more police officers per capita than New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and any other city in the nation with more than 1 million people.
“We rank No. 4 in officers per capita in the entire country. That’s a fact that’s been little-noticed, little attention has been drawn to it. And, I think we’ve kind of created a monster here if you will, in the sense that we keep talking about it and, therefore, it becomes factual,” he said.
Hey Rahm and all Chicago voters,
treat City Council like you do the police department:
when a city council member retires, dies, quits or gets fired, don't replace him/her. just combine his/her ward with a neighboring ward.
You can then tell the remaining alderman that they have to do more with less, like you ask us to do.
Why won't the local lamestream media report these outrageous FACTS in the public interest?
Could it be that their agenda tacitly condones "the Chicago Way"? Could the so-called Fourth Estate be nothing more than the propaganda wing of the Chicago CRook County Democratic Machine, the big city corruption laughingstock of the entire nation?
Thanks for breaking this down. See, Rahm & Gar, we can play the numbers game too. Where's that petition to reduce the # of alderman? I think it's time to get that going again.
It would be better, I think, to first reduce the number of wards by 25.
Then go to 12.
Demorats will never agree to any cuts.
Less Aldermen makes them more accountablle. The Mayor should like that. Alas, more Alderthieves means more patronage, more Democratic voting opportunities....so it will never happen....unless the Mayor wants to be a hero and have more than one term.
If you attended any of the 2 weeks of city council budget hearings you can see how pathetic a group the council is.
Amen Northside, SCC and everyone else who's been saying this for years. I would hope at least one major media outlet would publish those numbers and drive home this point to the masses!
Great point. Chicago's life-blood is PATRONAGE. If only one of 50 council members "goes rogue" against the Democratic Machine, it's much easier to CONTROL and manage. If one (or more) of only seventeen aldercreatures rocks the boat, the Machine has a major problem that could diminish it's POWER.

An unrelated item involving Gov. Quinn. Recently, PotatoHead was speaking against legalized gambling at O'Hare and Midway airports using the tactic that no other state allows it.
Well, right back at ya, guv.
WHY IS ILLINOIS THE ONLY STATE IN THE NATION WHICH REFUSES TO LEGALIZE CONCEALED CARRY BY DECENT, LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS?
This should also dispel the well-meaning simpletons that suggest one alderman for each police district. Since ward size is based on EQUAL populations, this would be impossible. Just look at 008 which would qualify as the second largest city in Illinois with almost a quarter million residents.
Did u ever wonder why we couldn't have one aldercreature for every police district. Just put one aldercreature in an office with one office aide. Why can't the aldercreature be located within the police district....we would save on alderman from 50 to 23...in salary ...we would save on their rent for the office....supplies routes would be cut in half....they could schedule better with the Commanders and the Chiefs...less friction between city hall and the police because the aldercreatures would know more a out what's happening in their wards because the ward's boundaries are those already in place as the district boundaries ..........winner ...winner. chicken dinner
Dylan Hata !
It's the old way, since the prohibition. And don't you love their 100% pension after only "one" term in office?
Maybe we should have three times as many aldermen as we have now, I mean, if it will help even one child...arghhhhhhhh.
If McStupid wants to use the 'we have more police per capita' than any other city, or whatever crap he's saying, then somebody ought to be called on the carpet about how 'over-represented' we are at the city council.
The only reason we have 50 is because they can bring in votes. Plain and simple.
I'm to the point I feel like throwing up whenever I see McIdiot or McTutu on the news. I have to switch the channel to something less upsetting, like Nat'l Geographic where lions are tearing gazelles apart limb by limb.
Boy, if I weren't moving south as soon as I retire, I'd be very into leading a petition drive to do this.
Very.
But then who would steal and lie to us?
broken promise from tiny dancer
politicians still have bodyguards
former mayor still has body guards
he rewards patrolman with commander pay of his detail
police officers are working in offices , should be replace with civilians
no outing of our merit promotions
everyone has a pretty good idea who they are
to many aldercreatures
Why cant they just break it down to 4 to 5 areas with 5 aldermans, wtf northside of 016, and southside in 022 pretty much run itself!!! to many tax dollars wasted on politically connected families and bullshit hood programs!!!
Listen are you trying to add to the unemployment rate? Less alderman means less indictments, which in turn results in layoffs for the federal court system and federal prisons.
On the bright side, the Feds wouldn't spend nowhere near the money sending alderwhores to prison because there'd be less of these clowns around!
How will Ald. Zalewski go to the gambling boat if he losses his job. We need him to vote YES to every new tax and fine out there.
Scc, Im glad you put this post up!
Im sick & tired of these 50 crooks. The
Mayor should be accountable as to why we have
So many aldermans! Why isnt the news media
Bringing this to everyones attention! They
Need to cut these aldermans as well as their salaries
Thanks SCC FOR BRINGING THE TRUTH OUT!
That's too many damn politicians!
It sure would be nice to see the media, local and national, do a story on this waste of $$$ in chicago. It's absurd to have 50 aldermen in chicago. There is no reason for it.
I have just e-mailed a link to this thread to ALL local mainstream media outlets including the editorial editors of both the Tribune and Sun-Times, all local TV news network affiliates and major radio stations, the BGA, FBI-Chicago and Second City Cop..
If we only get the response of "chirping crickets", I ask that YOU draw your own inescapable and logical conclusions concerning the agenda of the local mainstream media.

I rest my case.
Ok, cut 33 Aldercreatures. Salaries$107,000 X 33= 3.5 mil; they each get a 1 million dollar contigency fund, thats another 33 mil; their rents, staffs, benefits, rental cars, yada, yada, yada, The City would save easily 50-60 Million yearly!! Where's the petition.
Old retired guy
Our aldercreatures should also have term limits. It shouldn't be a life long career choice. After 2 terms they shouldn't be allowed to run again.
Think about this one.....There are more than 2X the aldermen in chicago then there are police districts. Now that is AMAZING!!! Hey media, think about that one. All we hear from city hall is "we need to down size," so they close police stations, but there is no talk of downsizing aldermen. It's the shitcago way.
Who or what does it take to reduce the size of the city council. Was the size created by ordinance, state law, the city council and does the mayor have the authority to reduce the size of the city council. I dont believe so, he just presides over it and anything he brings to the council has to be voted on and passed by the alderman
What would be necessary to reduce the number of aldermen
Thank you SCC. These are the type of issues that need to be brought out into the light!
There should be 4 Aldercreatures North , South, West and Central.Do we need more NO NO NO NO.........
I have lived in this city for 30 years. I have never once: a) called an alderman
b) gotten anything from an alderman
c) met an alderman
d) .....you get the idea.
I honestly do not know why the hell we need them.
Are they held accountable in any way? Like logging calls for service, services they've provided, etc?
With all of the new automation and community policing, it seems everything is pretty much covered.
Aldermen or city council members, or whatever, should look out for the best interests of their constituents--instead, we have a bunch of rubber-stampers who cost us money and are detrimental to the future of this city......i.e., skyway, parking meters, etc.
For the life of me, I still don't know how Daley didn't go to prison for bulldozing Meig's Field in the dead of night against Federal rules and regulations.

EXCELLENT point!!!!!
Having less aldermen would also force the mayor to pay attention to wards out in 016/008 and 022 because their vote would carry more weight. The way it is now the mayor could give a shit about those areas and blows off the aldermen there. 50 aldermen and only 23 police districts. Now that's just crazy.
Let's have a last minute referendum to lower the amount of aldercreatures, eye foe an eye I say!!!! Change the city constitution by our say so, a voice foe the people by the people!!! And if accountability is acceptable in CPD and sheet rolls downhill then the boss of GMac should be terminated, unsatisfactory plain and simple by the numbers. who might one have to pay around here to get anything done, Chicago politics at it's finest... Gotta love it
I took a look at the current map of the 50 wards. I pictured the wards joined in clusters of 3 of equal population. It would definitely work but the crooked politicians would fight it tooth and nail. Same goes for term limits and a recall for bad elected officials.
I agree. Only 17 wards. How do we make it happen in this shameless cesspool of a town? Face it. City Hall owns the media.
8:42 AM
Read the post directly above yours. WARDS MUST BE OF EQUAL POPULATION.
If Chicago were to have seventeen (17) wards, each would have to have about 158,565 residents based on the latest U.S. Census data.
We have 311 now, so tell me again why we need so many alderman???
Only King Rahm can come up with ideas to save the taxpayers money. The rest of you with these money saving ideas move along. If I can pump up Fannie Mays numbers to pump up my bonus and nobody goes to jail I must be much smarter that you. So just do as I say and not as I do and we will get along just fine. If you make more that 1 million a year and contribute to Obamas campaign I might just listen to what you have to say but that doesnt mean it will be implemented. I'm to busy trying to balence public safety without upsetting our voter base( criminals and welfare mooches)
"But then who would steal and lie to us?"
We'd still have the mayor!
Wont ever happen...
There is no need for 50 aldermen and there is no reason an alderman should make more money than a policeman, fireman, or Chicago public school teacher. As long as the democratic machine has absolute power and continues to back more and more puppets who are afraid to vote against king Rahm nothing will ever change. The democrats need to be voted out. This city is in desperate need for independent politicians that are willing to vote for what will be good for the city and not vote based on party lines.
The FY2012 proposed budget included a significant reduction in the
City’s workforce, including the elimination of 1,252 sworn officer vacancies in the Police
Department. The vacancy eliminations were reflected in a $56.6 million decline in final
Corporate Fund personnel services appropriations for the Police Department.
