Teachers Union Says "No" to 49

Here's the text from their mailing to their membership:

VOTE NO to "Proposed Amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution" on November 6th.

The first choice you'll make on your ballot this year will directly impact your pension.

VOTE NO!

If approved the "Proposed Amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution" will require a three-fifths vote of the legislature to improve pension and retirement benefits for teachers, higher education professionals and all public employees in state agencies.

Here is why you should vote no:

1. The pension debt is a problem, but this amendment will not solve it. The debt was created by the state's failure to pay into the retirement systems, as required by law. The proposed amendment does nothing to guarantee that Illnois meets its obligations.

2. The proposed amendment would strip you of many collective bargaining rights.
The amendment will make the fight to secure fair contracts much more difficult for workers and responsible employers.

3. The amendment creates more obstacles to fixing the unfair "Tier 2" pension benefits. Many fiscal experts agree that the Tier 2 benfit package must be improved to meet federal standards.
The proposed amendment would it make virtually impossible to do that.

4. The proposed amendment will cost the state money.
Changing the Illinois Constitution by adding this undemocratic, untested language would guarantee court challenges and costly fees for years to come.

Chicago Teachers Union urges you, your family, your colleagues and friends to vote NO to Question #1 on the ballot this November 6th.

 Spread the word.

Wasn't it just a year or so ago, that these same idiots said a constitutional convention was too expensive.

I am voting NO on any constitutional convention that doesn't include fixing up the FOID card mess, provide for concealed carry, and includes a recall amendment.

It's We The People, Not We The Political Elite.

If the greedy teachers unions says no, then I say yes.

It's either 49 and negotiation or bankruptcy.

Private sector pension benefits can not, by regulation, be increased unless the pension funds are 90% funded. Maybe we need the same rule for public center benefits. Anyway teachers benefits are already too lucrative. The benefits need to be decreased.

Love Second City Cop, but your pension perspective is tiresome. Anyway, as best I can tell, high school PE teachers have a much more lucrative total compensation deal than First Responders.

As I said to group of law enforcement professionals that were meeting in Chicago recently, "Would anyone here want Rahm Emanuel to have vIrtual total control of their pensions."

Now, after reading this please contact all your internet connections to have them vote NO.

SCC has done more to inform the lowly ranks of the CPD of this issue than the F(L)OP.

Not a sad fact, just a fact.

If only the collective junta that is SCC was a Patrolman's bargaining unit...

How does the Tier 2 benefit package not meet federal standards? Why would there be federal standards? Aren't the terms negotiated between state / employees?

Sorry SCC, but anything the teachers union supports - I have to go against.

Public pensions are destroying this state, I think they're unsustainable in the long term and something has to give.

I am going to vote yes on this issue. I do not see how it affects in any significant way the pensions of current or retired police officers and firefighters. This amendment will stop these school boards from padding the pensions of teachers and administrators and leaving the bill for taxpayers throughout the state.

I am going to vote yes. Do you really think thatyou will see any enhancement of pensions, with the exception of teachers, in the ner future? If you do you are living in an alternative universe. The corrupt school boards are padding the pensions of administrators and teachers and we all are paying the bill for this.NO public employee should be able to retire before 60 years of age unless disabled or where health issues do not allow the person to continue.Teachers have the best deal in the country of any public employees and certainly far better then police and fire in Chicago. I vote yes to this and I willing to bet it will pass as the public is fed up over pension issues. They have no sympathy for pension increases.

"NO public employee should be able to retire before 60 years of age..."

Really? Do you really want 60 year old cops chasing bad guys through alleys, fighting with drug dealers, etc.?

Imagine the duty disability costs.

We can't all work desk jobs...there are fewer and fewer of those, anyway.

How is it that this issue is risen in Illinois with nary a wimper from the unions? Especially after the recent events in Wisconsin?
How apathetic we have become...

It is a fair point, but if you really feel that way then EVERY police officer and fire fighter should be forced off at a younger age. Look at the ages of white shirts. They should get off of the job and make room for others. Female police officers, no matter what rank, tend to retire as soon as they can.
