.05 per Bullet Shot Down

Someone must have steered Preckwinkle in the direction of an Econ 101 textbook:
  • Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle today dropped plans for a five-cent bullet tax, but still wants to charge a $25 tax on every gun purchase.

The compromise was negotiated over several days with Commissioners John Fritchey and Edwin Reyes, both Chicago Democrats, who had balked at the guns and ammo taxes.

In exchange for their support, Preckwinkle agreed to create a $2 million fund to combat gun violence. Fritchey had proposed dedicating $1.4 million to anti-gun violence efforts. She also agreed to exempt law-enforcement officers from having to pay the tax, which helped convince Reyes to support the plan.
Evidently, she only absorbed half the lesson though. If we can get a gun for $25 cheaper in Kane or Will or DuPage county, we'll be doing that instead and picking up a few hundred bucks worth of ammo while we're there.

And if you thought for an instant that this was anything but a punitive tax on those who dare to own a gun, this ought to make it clear:
  • The bullet tax was projected to raise $400,000 in revenue. The gun tax would raise $600,000, Budget Director Andrea Gibson said.

The revenue would help defray the cost of medical care for people who are shot and then treated at county-run, taxpayer subsidized Cook County Hospital. The hospital treats about 670 gunshot victims at year at an average cost of $52,000, Preckwinkle said.
$1 million in new taxes to defray a bill of $34.8 million in gunshot care?  What a fucking joke.

They should tax the 1st Amendment, maybe the liberals might get the message that you don't tax THE RIGHTS of CITIZENS. As usual, those of us that are law abiding citizens that pay our taxes already are eating the cost of these neer-do-wells bad behavior. They just wanted some more tax dollars to spread around to their constituents.

A New Tax, that will fix the problem!!! Because we all know that the gang bangers are showing their FOID cards, filling out the 4473, and waiting 3 days before taking possession of their legally purchased firearm.

"The hospital treats about 670 gunshot victims at year "

===============================

Don't ya think that their aim is a little low on that statement?

You know what the $2 million dollars would fund? You're Cease Fire Street Friar crew with a little pocket change left over for some of the clouted ones.

You know what would defray the cost of the shootings?

The $55 million being pissed away on Maggie Daley Park.

Jan 1 baby. That's when the fed payroll tax break expires and almost every Illinoisan gets to feel the true pain of the Illinois State Income tax rate increase a while ago. A whopping 2% of their income getting hammered which in most cases wipes out any raise they may have received this year assuming they got a raise at all.

Think the economy is going to improve with less disposable income?

Give 'em a Walgreen's gift card mayor. That's what Oprah would do. Everyone gets a gift card.

Hey if you're going out of state to get your guns and ammo could you please bring me a couple of cartons of smokes back too?

If you're not willing to do it I think that I have some illegal immigrants on my block that are willing to do these jobs. Maybe we should just match them up eh?

Where's anyone in the hood going to legitimately get $52 grand to pay a hospital bill? From a part-time temporary WalMart job? Pffft.

Or maybe one of those part-time Welding jobs that the mayor says are in short supply and the corporations just can't find people to work them.

But hell, even that you're talking about half, or a third of a mortgage payment for the next 30 years and then you pile on the school tuition costs on top of that.

You wonder why there's no hope? I don't care what your math or science scores are we have people with PhD's pushing brooms as janitors. Google it!

The economy is bullshit. The politicians are bullshit as are both presidential candidates working for the corporations.

What she didn't mention, of course, were the millions of dollars that could be saved by letting the sheriff police the forest Preserves. (which he has offered to do) Seems that each and every member of the Forest Preserves Police can only hold their job through the DIRECT patronage of the political hack County Board President.

Easy fix: If the peson shot won't cooperate with the police; we (society) shouldn't have to pay for their care. Leave them on the ground. OR -- for the more liberals among us: Care for them, then make them work off the debt. I'm sure Stroger has lots of toilets that need cleaning, and the county has other jobs that require minimal training. Reduce the debt on the stinkers involved, not on the taxpayers.

That's real smart - tax the people who aren't shooting other people. I have a better idea for Preckwinkle: Fine every scumbag caught with a gun $52,000, can't be waived, can't be suspended, can't be reduced. If they can't pay, they can work at the county hospitals cleaning up the emergency rooms for $10.00 a day until that debt is paid.

Just another prime example of blaming the guns for violence, when anyone with a brain knows its the thugs with guns that cause violence.

Did Preckwinkle take a swim also. Lets tax the good citizens so the drug induced gang bangers can shoot each other and get treated at county hospital so they can live another day and shoot or get shot again and again.

Hmm maybe that,s the plan with some collateral damage.

Better plan is to make Illinois join the rest of the nation and make carry conceal the law for the good citizens. Don,t need to go for a swim for that idea!

Back in 1936, in United States v. Butler, the Supreme Court ruled that you can't tax one industry in order to subsidise a different industy. So...if you tax the firearms industry to fund the health care industry...

The problem is that the county can invoke a use tax.

Something like what is done when purchasing a vehicle. You will have to pay the tax to Cook County no matter where you buy the gun.

670 gunshot victims a year????

Hahaha ahh no..

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SHOT IN CHICAGO IN 2011 2,217.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SHOT IN CHICAGO AS OF Oct 24, 2012 2260

(via chicagocrime blog)

----------------------------

This is a business, a big business in Chicago!. The politicians don't want to stop it.

2260 X $52,000 == $117,520,000 as of Oct 24 2012

Homicides for 2012 is very likely to hit over 500 in 2012.

It's been reported that each homicide cost $400,000 to investigate and prosecute and that my friends means we are pushing $200 million dollars there for the year.

Grand total could be close to a half BILLION dollars for 2012!!

Don't mess with the mayors cash flow.

He can build a larger kingdom for himself. A half billion dollars enables him to hand out million dollar packages to his Violence Interrupter Street Friar friends. No-bid 90 year trillion dollar contracts can be awarded to the clouted ones. You get to play the victim with the violence.. oh it's so sad...guess we'll just have to raise taxes again.. Just look at all these shooting. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk, Whatdowedo, what-do-we-do? ha.

Use the crisis mayor. Use the crisis to extort the people for more taxes, fines and fees -- so you can piss that money away on Maggie Daley Park and Parks for the real estate developers -- so the people living in the high rises pay higher rents.

What are the people in the neighborhoods gonna get for their tax dollars?

We are about to get 100 foot gaudy electric billboards if the mayor gets his way. That should help property values eh? That will create living wage jobs eh? Planting giant unsightly nuisances in the hoods.

Oh look!!

"October homicides in Chicago second lowest in 30 years"

Is McBozo marching up and down State street banging on a big drum to proclaim that his tactics are working yet?

Seems like every time he does we get a surge a few days later. Like one month is a trend.

So if the homicide problem is over then the city should give us all a tax rebate. The gun tax we can forgetabout as McFiguresdolie has it all under control. We can lay off some more beat cops and close down more districts.

The entire city...no the entire country is closer to this indentured servant scenario than we might think.

Taxes, fines, fees keep going up and wages are stagnant or going down.

What are working for? To pay taxes and that's it? If you're not a clouted one or a politician is your standard of living going up?

And it's not just your wages that are falling. By doing all these bailouts borrowing more money, printing money and manipulation of interest rates they are robbing the value of all your savings and money in your IRA, 401K's, pension and savings.

Most people don't get it!

30 year interest rates in bonds down to near nothing? Hey that's great for the person that is borrowing money if they can qualify for a loan. But think about what it does to the income of anyone that depends on fixed income of their savings and retirement. That's the flip side

This "quantitative easing" as they call it devalues all your savings and the work that you have done to obtain those savings. They already got the equity in our homes with these games. It's a full on attack on the middle class.

Google the new college grad placement rate. The kids are going back home to live after college. The kids are being forced to work in burger flipping jobs instead of their educated professions which include computers, engineering and science. Asia is cheaper, end of story. This is your "free trade" at work.

In order to extablish that a firearm is taxed, you have to record the serial number and record the tax. Now taxes are recorded for how many years? This not only brings in revenue, but is a gun registration scheme.

Deduct the medical costs from their Link cards and all the other entitlement crap that we pay for. They choose a life of crime, why should we pay for them to get treated? Think how low crime would be if we just let these shot up gangbangers die. Instead we the working people have to pay for all their medical treatment. If they are document gang members or illegal aliens they should be forced to pay, if they don't pay then no more free government benefits. Look I just saved the country billions of dollars a year.

One of the biggest anti-gunners around. Kept seeing the name around Mark Karlin's "Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence," like 20-25 years ago. ICHV violated their 501(c)3 status many, many times -- their mailing list went straight to anti-gun political candidates.

Bunch of shrill, useless, weak sucks -- who as we all know spit on the police except when they need that man with a gun to save them from the goblins they encourage the rest of the year...

Expenditure does not equal income.

WBBM's senescent Sherman Kaplan was just similarly fuzzy-logicing his way through another Noon Business Hour, casting about. "But...but won't all the rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy stimulate the economy?"

The person on the other end of the phone line tried to explain to him what "loss" meant.

No matter. Kaplan tried exactly the same thing again today.

I turned it off.
