November Retirement Numbers
We got a few e-mails recently and a few comments last month about November being a particularly heavy month of retirements:
- 4 to 7 captains
- over a dozen lieutenants
- 40 or more sergeants
- well over 100 officers
We're pretty sure someone out there has the exact numbers.
We'd also point out that the Academy has around 200 or so recruits and the 500 hires that Rahm promised seem a bit of a fantasy so far.

if you can leave and you dont you need your head checked.
At this rate we will not be able to use time for the forseeable future. Look for mandatory o.t. and yet another schedule change ( 12 hr days ) comming soon.
Gotta do more with less dontcha know.
Good luck to every one of them.
ABANDON SHIP!!!! The CPD is in deep dodo! 1000's have retired over the years and next to no one hired to replace them. WOW WE ARE FUCKED!!! We need the bodies to replace these guys ASAP!
looking at close to if not more than 1000 retirements for 2012?
1400 budgeted Police spots eliminated at the stroke (hah!) of a pen?
5000+ retirements since Y2K?
Less than 1K hires in the same time frame? O_o?
Setting the stage for privatization/making the "expensive & inconvenient" Police Department finally go away in accordance to the wishes of the majority.
City of Chicago Public Safety - Security/Customer Service & Information Officers - Tour Guides.
The $10 to $12 an hour and no benefits Cocked-Hat Security we warn you people about...
Just wait until they're churned and turned over constantly to keep them from getting that bump to $15 and hour.
*Can't have you guys gettin' all expensive an' shit*
No testing. No standards. Just City of Chicago "certification."
And you think The Police aren't dangerously close to not giving a flying fuck about anything BUT survival?
This here? Is gonna be a whole new kind of ugly for a lot of people.
Dude & Co. will end up being bold enough to run mobile ass-kicking service vans all through downtown.
*Get your ass kicked and win a prize!*
Their fee is whatever you have in your pockets.
Claw your way to the light blue "Police" kiosk and press the big red button...
"Hi! Welcome to Chicago... I'm Mayor Rahm Emanuel, your host. How can we make your stay a more pleasant one?"
"Did you know that crime is DOWN (whatever the fuck the secret percentage of the dsy is) in Chicago?"
*Screams of terror just like on the old "Creature Feature" from WGN back in the day*
A viciously vacuous and vile infomercial & propaganda loop in Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Farsi, Russian, Spanish and finally English...
Nevermind the skeleton laid out on the other side clutching a bloody and incomplete booklet of coupons redeemable for 10 seconds of screaming into a microphone for help.
Con-men, jackrollers, bojank artists, slack-cutters and just plain scudder-ass muthafuckahs are running this city.
Mikey Meahler you gone Mr.ERPs????
I can retire and I did, in October. Feels Great. I wish everyone the best but I had to go.
Anyone know the October retirement numbers?
When is the next Sgts class and how many will be promoted before the end of the year?
Another academy class starting Wednesday 31oct12, supposedly 100 recruits
I am in a "unit" like everywhere else we are extremely short, Rahman and the bullshitting lying mcwhatever will let the police suffer, the citizens will get hurt/die and they still sleep t night! God bless my brothers and sisters on CPD!
Raise the minimum retirement age to 55 to keep the pension fund funded.
Box Chevy Phantom ;
Dammit! One hell of a posting, should be a front page editorial on every Chicago lap-dog newspaper, but that would make you a " Chicago journalist ", and I wouldn't want to insult you.
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until you all believe me. We have enough police officers in my kingdom. Wait, I meant city. Now, STFU and go back to work. Gotta do more with less. Did I really just say that?
You'll all be happy to know 15 retiring out of IAD alone.
So sorry to se Delaney go? LMFAO!
I was told there are approx 100 patrolmen going this Nov. and I am one meself.
scc, you forgot about the 5000 guys sitting in beat/rapid cars who have also retired prematurely---- read in the paper that a 14 and 16 year old were arrested and charged with burglarizing the cpd horse stable back in september--- good pinch....
Another round of applicants are being processed this weekend at the academy. Most will either not show or fail some part of the process. I'm sure the 7 day notice to report from ladner is appreciated too
12 hour days , sign me up
work 3 off 4 , better than cfd
court on days off , side jobs
150 recruits to start on 31 Oct.
If there's gonna be 12 hour days there will one more retirement.
--->This guy!
Just Sayin,
Was at the academy lately and talking to several recruits. They could hardly speak English. Broken English at best. Of course you do Not have to be a U.S. citizen to be on the Chicago Police Department1

Where are all the new sgt's going?
Chicago will probably lose 500,000 residents who flee for their lives to the outer 'burbs. Then maybe Chicago won't have a strangle hold on the rest of the state.
Con-men, jackrollers, bojank artists, slack-cutters and just plain scudder-ass muthafuckahs are running this city.

Please get some help, you need it. You are losing your grip.
Geez Chevy Box,I know sometime in the past someone told you what a great, witty writer you were.THEY LIED!
Hope Moy is going too!
Box Chevy Phantom, I love you.
•40 or more sergeants
------
more like 50 sergeants going by 31 Dec 2012
The uncertainty is whether the City will continue to get Fed funds to sustain medical premiums for those who opted for the early retirement benefit, which in theory runs thru 2018 (based on leaving at 55 in Jun'13).
It's a roll of the dice, and the City owns the dice. They still can't guarantee our pension.
Don't trust the City.
November 13 for Sgts, class of 46. Unless it has changed.

Ok, so what is your fucking point? I work with several officers who were not born in this country. They speak with heavy Polish accents. But they are good damn officers.
Also, just because you are native born genuine 110% American doesn't mean you know the language. Just go ahead and read some of the reports that are written by people who were born and raised here. It is downright shameful.
Hey, there's only 8.5 hrs. on a tour. Just do whatever during that time and go home.
Since jan 2007 there have been 938 officers hired through 30 oct 201, and through june of 2012 there has been 1861 total retirements for a negative number of 923 less officers on the streets.
Don't worry about that. McNutty and Rahm know better than us and they say we've got plenty of officers!
Oh yeah they've got some swampland and a bridge to sell us too!
10/30/12 12:29---
I have also heard that they are looking at 12 hour days. I can believe 10s but doubt 12s since it doesn't multiply in the equipment factor. We don't have enough cars and radios now and we're sitting in the station waiting for someone to come in before we go out, or the sergeants are calling in early cars from the preious watch to send them home early so we can have their car and radios. If they try to put us on 10 or 12 hour shifts we need to demabd the 4-10 schedule like some of the units are getting. Three consecutive days off each week and a couple four day weekends! We deserve the extra time off if we will be forced to work the extra hours. Units with 10 hour days get the benefit of the extra time off, Demand out Union fight for that fo all of us.
my buddys girlfriend is in the class starting 31 Oct. after going through all the bullshit in the testing process and dicked around for months, gets the call at 1800hrs on Monday night(29 Oct). Your hired, be there at 0645 on Weds. What a fucking circus..! I told her..welcome to the CPD, plan your exit now.
To 759 am! FUCK U u fucking mush brain. I can go at 50. Why the Hell should I work 5 more years....that's wasting 5 years of my life in this shit hole....bc some piece of shit dumbocrat didn't contribute what they promised into my pension fund. U dumb fucking sheepish yes man. When someone does something unjust u fight back u don't just say well okay u guys screwed up but ill work 5 more years or contribute thousands of more dollars to fix Ur mistakes. I ain't giving up shit I fight I don't run away. U make me sick u yes man sheep....yes sir yes sir yes sir ill walk over that cliff. In case it wasn't clear FUCK YOU.
I'm sure the 7 day notice to report from ladner is appreciated too
Back in the 80's I was leaving home for work 3rd watch,Fri, in the suburban dept. I worked for. Wife gave me the city envelope while walking out the door to report to 1300 W. that Mon.. 7 days would have been nice.
And even through almost 30 years of shit later, still love the "job". Not the bosses or politicians the "job".
Be Safe Boys and Girls.
We are gonna miss the Big guy ... 704 LT Jack. Best always in your Golden years!
bring on the 12 hour days!!!!!!!!
500 recruits to start 31 Oct 12. You can bet on it ... Advance uniform just turned on two 5 watt light bulbs on a dimmer switch in their showroom. ROTF

You short bus trollers always come on the blog to tell people to sit down and shut up when they post the truth.
I heard Captain Witch in 016 is retiring. Thank God and about time--I know she can't be over 63, but she looks and acts 93! Won't miss her sour puss.

OMG, I sooooo agree. Was talking to someone today who said people aren't willing to stick around to hit the 29, and are retiring because of the deplorable conditions at 26, 27, 28 years.
The 1500 hired in '86 are closing in on the 29. Mass exodus will continue.
If I had the age I'd be the hell out of here. I am so envious (but happy for) the ones who are 55 and can go.
Anyone 55 who can go and doesn't should be psyche-checked.

I agree with your post except for this point:
And you think The Police aren't dangerously close to not giving a flying fuck about anything BUT survival?
Um, we're not 'dangerously close'. We're already there.
Other than that, you're spot-on.
It's a cycle. What you predict will come true, then things will come full circle again, where the citizens will form a militia of their own, until the gov't embraces and adopts the concept of a police force again.
OT, but how in the hell do police in London (or is it all of England) not carry guns? How the f*ck does that work? That has made me wonder for years.
BCP, any ideas?
To the junior officer who posted lets raise the retirement age to 55. Hey let's just make it 30 years and retirement, but you you don't like that grandpa, you will be around 65-70. So mind your own business.

I dunno. If you're there for 9, 3 more is not that much of a stretch. It's all how you'd have to break your day into segments. Although I love the 4 day weeks, by the time I work 9 hours, since I have a shit starting time, it's not like I'd be missing a lot. Might end up commuting during better hours.
Still undecided.
And if you can go now, why wait until 12 hour days to do it? I don't understand people who have the time and the age, especially those 55, who stick around. I don't understand it.
Make the leap.
I don't think I've EVER talked to anyone who has regretted retiring. Sure, you'll miss some things, and the clowns (?) you work with, but life is constantly changing. If you can go, go. You never know how much time you have left.
I heard that they might make a class of Sgt in November and plus three more classes next year.
I have made the mistake of retiring at age 60, I should have worked 3 more years. I made the mistake of moving to suburbia, I should have stayed in old St. Ben's parish. Do not make the same mistakes! Work until 63 (especially you women). Stay in Chicago and help the Mayor help you. Buy a Jeep and help the President! Keep working Ya Ya Ya!!!
Le sarcasm, n'est-ce pas?
RE: Another round of applicants are being processed this weekend at the academy. Most will either not show or fail some part of the process. I'm sure the 7 day notice to report from ladner is appreciated too
7 day notice to report...hahahahaha
try this...you take your final power test at 7am on Thursday and pass, get an email at 1445 hrs Thursday and told to report at 0645 hrs Friday to begin Training! That's more like 15 HOUR notice!
BCP, Wow! On the Money!
Creature Feature brings back memories of my youth. A few years fast forward.
Crime is down, Yeah!, Like Six Feet Under Down
The Teacher
Some of the new applicants seem to already know how to "about face" after hearing they have to take lie detector and drug test.
Hey box Chevy phantom: put a sock in it. You are just not very witty.
The 12s will work with expanded foot posts and 1 radio per car.

Despite the bullshit, there is some magic in this job. Maybe it's the the 1 thank you that you get out of 1,000 cases. Maybe it's the people you work with. Maybe it's what you make of it.
For all that it's taken out of me, for all of the physical and mental tolls it has taken, I'm not sure I wouldn't do it again.
I've learned a lot of lessons, both good and bad. It's stripped some optimism, but sometimes has renewed some faith.
After 27 years, it's still a mystery.
It's sort of like being in the military and going to Iraq (I haven't)....but the comparison is, if you weren't there, and you didn't live through it, there is no way to explain it to someone who hasn't.
A privilege and a curse at the same time.
I'm almost done, and the biggest lesson I've learned is that time is short, and no matter what kind of shit is going on at the moments, try to make the best of it. And have some laughs.
"Chicago will probably lose 500,000 residents who flee for their lives to the outer 'burbs. Then maybe Chicago won't have a strangle hold on the rest of the state."
Like a cancer, Chicago political influence has already spread to the suburbs. Chicago election workers now politic beyond Chicago.
DuPage county will be the next to fall victim to the cancer that is Chicago politics if they don't watch out.
Chicago politics already has a strong hold in Springfield and the cancer has spread to the White House.
I say we do 2 X 24 hour days and have 5 off. We stay in the stations for 5 hours of sleep and get dispatched accordingly. Additionally we are allowed to live in Wisconsin on a lake and take the train in.

More like 2000 hired in 1986, me among them. I went three weeks ago. Feels great. No second thoughts.
To those who feel the deep need to leave at age 50, make sure you have your health care in order because you will pay around $800 a month for it. That is the price for leaving at 50. 55 and out agreement has no guarantees of being there forever. Same as 60 and free health care. Lucky my wife is still working and I am on her medical plan, just in case the undependable City screws me.

____
Well, you definitely are witty.
Coppers are just pretty much saying "fuck it" now...
What about all the second career people who were in their late 20's to late 30's?
That's one possible reason there's talk of increasing the minimum retirement age from 50 to 55-57...
They need to hold people hostage now because the plan to drive people off the job is working TOO good when everybody that CAN flee IS/WILL soon bee fleeing.
it's always hard to see a guy with a star and two bars on his left sleeve trudging out to a squad car for another tour while some little shit h#$se mouse with 5 years on the job is doing her nails in the caps office--- if you can't get on your wife's plan when you retire then just pick up a little part timer to just pay for the medical--- easier said than done maybe but something to think about if you're on the fence about whether to leave or not....
Who starts a training program on a Wednesday? That's like running statistics from Tues-Tues so that you get the numbers you're looking for.
Thought McDumbass didn't like starting things in the middle of the week, that's why we had to change the period from starting on Thurs to Sun.

No problem kid. Just stay away from Berwyn for a while until this blows over.
Think that the retirement should be 30 years any age with free health care. Some of us max out at 52 with 30 years on and yet get no free health care.
I'm surprised that the residents outside a 50 radius of Chicago haven't demanded that N/E Illinois be made its own separate state.
I wonder how the rest of the state would fare financially without the drain of Chicago(and all it represents).
Captain CW is retiring! I thought she was a lifer.
what are the totals for 55 and free health retirements for 2013 for Police Officers and Nov , dec 2012 for supervisors ?
The public safety departments, including the Office of Emergency Management, comprise 58.7%
of the City’s FY2013 proposed Corporate Fund budget. Mayor Emanuel and Police
Superintendent Garry McCarthy have taken some actions to evaluate and reorganize the Chicago
Police Department.
Reorganizing the Command Structure of the Police Department: Superintendent McCarthy’s
reorganization of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) eliminated two assistant
superintendent and four deputy superintendent positions, creating a management system
more similar to police departments in other major U.S. cities.62
Re-deployment of Additional Officers to the Beat: The Mayor and CPD have deployed more
officers previously assigned as Mobile Strike Force and Targeted Response Unit officers,
administrative positions and detention aides to patrol higher crime areas.63
Consolidation of Space and Increased Coordination: The FY2012 budget closed three police
stations and consolidated the Police and Fire headquarters. The consolidated headquarters
allowed the City to terminate a $350,000 lease previously used for the Fire Department
headquarters.64 The City anticipates savings in administrative expenses, better coordination
between the public safety departments and combined strength of special units such as
helicopter and marine operations.65
Reduction in Expenses: The FY2012 proposed budget included a significant reduction in the
City’s workforce, including the elimination of 1,252 sworn officer vacancies in the Police
Department. The vacancy eliminations were reflected in a $56.6 million decline in final
Corporate Fund personnel services appropriations for the Police Department.66
