Murders Down

  • The crack epidemic that began in the 1980s ushered in a wave of bloodletting in the nation's capital and a death toll that ticked upward daily. Dead bodies, sometimes several in a night, had homicide detectives hustling between crime scenes and earned Washington unwelcome monikers such as the nation's "murder capital." At the time, some feared the murder rate might ascend to more frightening heights.

But after approaching nearly 500 slayings a year in the early 1990s, the annual rate has gradually declined to the point that the city is now on the verge of a once-unthinkable milestone. The number of 2012 killings in the District of Columbia stands at 78 and is on pace to finish lower than 100 for the first time since 1963, police records show.

[...] The drop reflects a downward trend in violent crime nationwide and is in line with declining homicides in other big cities. Though killings have risen in Chicago, New York City officials say homicides dropped to 515 last year from 2,262 in 1990. Houston police reported 198 homicides last year, down from 457 in 1985, while Los Angeles ended last year with fewer than 300 after reporting 1,092 in 1992. Across the country, violent crime reported by police to the FBI fell by 3.8 percent last year from 2010.
Meanwhile, Chicago's march to 500 continues.

Why would anyone compare the 1990"S!!

the last decade was the 2000's or that decade doesn't count because the numbers are the same as they are now?

The media is still blind to the conceal carry laws and advances in medical technology as being contributing factors.

That said, maybe, just maybe homicides should not be the metric today. Just maybe it should be shootings eh. What do you think? Chicago has had 2,250 shooting incidents so far this year and as we all know some of those were multiple victims.

Something you never see mentioned in these articles, while murders are down, the side benefit of 10+ years of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, is the emergency room doctors (many of which serve in the U.S. Military) have improved the medical care in treating gunshot wounds in the last 10-20 years.

But crime is down.
Slightly off topic, i seem to remember a police chief withdrawing the police force from some neighborhoods after anti police protests. Subsequently the murder rate tripled or something like that. Does anyone remember where that was? I would love to see that happen here the next time the ghetto protests a police shooting. Maybe we would get some assistance after the digs turn upon themselves

That gun ban sure did the trick over the years. Stupid liberal idiots. They are pawns in the game of the socialists who control them. They're the ones who want an unarmed society so that they can strip Americans of all of their rights.

Interesting how the story implies that Chicago's murder count is higher than circa 1990. See how they twist the truth to make the story?

None of the other 'big cities' have or gave a million dollars to Ceasefire.

Tomorrow, Sunday-25 November 2012 at 2100 hours on broadcast antenna television, Channel 20.1-WYCC is scheduled to air A Plea For Peace: A Town Hall Meeting, regarding the murder rate in Chicago.

Lilia Chacon and G-MACK are the hosts. It could be interesting if you haven't before heard his lies. And can't wait to hear about the CeaseFire contract and all their successful urban violence interruptions.

I will say it here again as I have before many times: Without the current trauma centers and medical science that we have the murders in Chicago would exceed 1,000 every year. Give credit where it is do. It certainly is not the mayor, the superintendant, his commanders or the fucked up "operational policies" of the CPD that is keeping the numbers down. If you believe otherwise, then you believe also that weather has absolutely NO effect on crime. Want to buy a bridge?

Alot of it stems from the brady bunch, get over it people thats history and it will continue until people can protect themselves. The Army should place their doctors in our ER rooms to learn about bullets 101.People are just going to start to carry and put their lives in front of a jury if they pop some ASSHOLE rather than die after being shot by some savage on the street.

i have been living outside chicago for the past four years and have been reading the reports on the climbing murder rate with as critical an eye as i can. it appears that most of the murders/shootings are gang related. it stands to reason that not all are, but it appears that a high percentage are.

my question is this, concerning those non-gang related shootings/murders, are their numbers increasing over those of previous years?

Read the article, it's talking about how big cities murder rates are dropping,(forget about the 90's stuff the writer used to stretch out the article). What is the reason for Chicago? Not enough manpower! Cities like DC are taking revenue from red lights tickets, etc and to add even more manpower. They stay at what they are supposed to have and when they get less than 300 above minimum, they hire police! The other big cities have a healthy appreciation of their police and citizens. They make safety a priority unlike Chicago. It's not the fault of the cops, blame it on the administration. Apparently, they haven't had enough bad press yet to do something.

Just read Rahm's article in the Washington Post that another reader suggested. The question remains, why is he not writing the Trib or any other Chicago newspaper? People in DC are not fooled by him (especially us transplants who still love the Chicago we knew)and truthfully could care less on how he's furthering the demise of Chicago, we are just glad he is there and not here.
