Secure Station

  • A man killed Sunday in a shootout at a suburban Detroit police headquarters first tried to shoot an officer behind bulletproof glass before officers exchanged gunfire with him, police said.

One police officer was wounded in the shootout in Southfield, a city of about 73,000 north of Detroit. The injured officer was in stable condition Sunday night with a single gunshot wound in the shoulder and expected to live.

Police Chief Eric Hawkins said investigators were trying to figure out why the gunman carried out the attack. The 64-year-old man had no known grievance with police.

Thank goodness J-Fled got us those cheap security doors, but nothing for the lobbies.

"He didn't say anything," Hawkins said at a news conference. "The officers said he had a blank stare on his face."

Not a surprise to me. The economy is going down. Keep the riot gear handy. Going to be gassing and shooting our own citizens soon -- beat them into submission to pay the debts off with their social security and pension money. The clouted ones must protect their social econ. status at all cost.

Ethics??? wut?

Meanwhile there's also a Detroit suburb that layoff-ed cop's and now sees a spike in homicides too..

Obama in a 2008 speech had said he wasn't going to waste his DOJ resources to shut down medical pot dispensaries on the west coast.

Obama said that pot was an issue for the states to decide, that he was not going to interfere.

Obama said the DOJ had more important things to do like fight violent crime and terrorism.

That's pretty funny because I don't see any significant help from the DOJ in Chicago were the violence is soaring. Nor do I see it in Detroit.

However I have seen raid after raid by the DOJ on medical marijuana dispensaries on the west coast in states that legalized them.

It's a flat out lie. This is a revenue stream -- they are going to use the law against the will of the people to seize property and assets.

Watch how the DOJ and Washington lawyers go after Colo and Washington soon. They don't care about the homicides and violence here and neither does Rahm else he would be asking for help. The politicians don't want to legalize pot in Chicago because they want to make money off it instead. Sending a pot smoker to court and jail in Chicago was cutting into the cash flow too much so the powers that be went the "decriminalization? route..ha, are they not merciful.

It's about resources..and we're still mis-allocating our resources. It's about truth. It's about ethics and they have none as we can see. But most of all it's about money. How can the politicians profit from the crime.

How can this be a democracy when 70~80% of the people polled say leave it alone and the president and politicians say no, we're going to do what we want to do???

Lucky they don't hit a certain north side district on midnights where all they have is 1 po on desk, 1 watch secretary/radio room person and the dss who is busy trying to figure out who might be in the hole via GPS.

yes they put up a 4 foot brick wall in 004 with a gate. Its a metal gate, also 4ft high. We had an 8yr old waiting for his mother behind the desk. He was better security. The 8yr old at least locked the desk swinging door.

This department doesn't care about officer safety.
In 008 they expect (2) officers total to cover the desk.
That means while the one officer is doing radios( a several hour responsibility) that leaves just one officer at the desk to do everything else. How would 1 officer, who's already over taxed with multitasking, be able to handle an attack like this??
Meanwhile our Commanders office has enough manpower to staff an entire roll call!

I worry about the desk crew in 011. Some major maniacs come through those doors. And they're so busy, they're not always paying attention to what's at the counter--keep one eye on who's coming in there, be safe.

The Police in Detroit exchanged gunfire with a guy who was behind bulletproof glass? In Chicago Anita Alverez would view that as a chance to charge the police.

I have a friend who works at a nearby PD in suburban Detroit. The entire Southfield PD is furious with the Chief of Southfield who "asked for prayers" for the man killed and didn't say anything about the Sgt that was shot and wounded.

Something to ponder, why is the entire desk area not enclosed behind bullet-proof glass or some other
material for the protection of Police personnel working behind the desk ? Especially in the stations in high crime, police-hating districts such as west and south sides ? One would shudder to think that the mayor, superintendent, and the gold stars feel that the rank-and-file officers are "expendable".

All stations have one PO and they aren't supposed to have a watch secretary on the desk. That's the order.

Security? That's the biggest joke on this department. Been to several stations north and south, and it wouldn't take the terminator to wipe out a whole crew given the current set up we have. Rahms house is probably safer than any station in this town. Shouldn't surprise anyone because as always, police and fire are not this city's priority. Things like maggie park and bike lanes and donating money to ex/current gangmembers are more important. Unfortunately it will take a tragic event of certain magnitude where many good people would have to lose their lives to change this. God help us if we were to ever have an incident similar to 9/11 here- the people would see first hand all the corner cutting and misappropriating this mayor has done to emergency resources. They would be coming for him with torches and pitchforks.

Not to mention everyone who works the desk does not wear their body armor and usually carries a smaller more comfortable firearm in a pancake holster with no duty belt. Hell most of the desk people I see do not even carry handcuffs. Our department may be the 3rd largest in the nation, but I'll bet we are at the bottom of the list on equipment and station security issues.

Been in headquarters lately? There is no security there. I go in thru the front entrance on Michigan every morning around 9. Lately all I have seen is a sgt working the lobby desk and he is swamped with people asking questions. Just about anyone can walk into that building bypassing the medical detector and take the elevators to any floor. At least during the time I come to work. During NATO and for the last ten years before that they actually had a PO at that entrance. So if bosses don't care about security at the building they work, think they are going to do anything with district security?

As the American Economy worsens and eventually collapses, police officers will be facing more violence from some citizens. They, the citizens will be acting out more aggressively because their economic security has disappeared and won't return. The politicians and the Big Shots who brought this disaster upon us won't be held accountable and will weasel deal their way out of being taking the blame for it. We will be expected to deal with the violence and chaos that will occur. At the same time these same politicians and Big Shots will find a way to steal our pensions and union rights. We will live in interesting times...

Hey guess what? The new food stamp caseload data is here!!

The report released on Nov 9th 2012 reports data as of the month of Aug 2012.

Illinois ==

1,957,192 people are on food stamps as of Aug 2012 and that's a 3.5% increase from July 2012 and an 8.1% increase year over year when compared to Aug 2011.

HOW ABOUT THOSE CHICAGO JOBS EH MAYOR?

Or as the governor calls them JAY-OH-BEES ..hahaha.

We're probably not suppose to be looking over here.

We're probably supposed to be looking at Rahm's disastrous city job fair or something where over 3,000 people showed up for a chance at landing one of about 56 jobs advertised -- only to discover that you can't apply for any of these jobs at the fair.

In fact you gain no advantage at all. No interview, no leg up. Just people handing out flyers that are already on the internet.

Yeah they were pissed.

These results were achieved after TRILLIONS of dollahs were spent by the US, State and city governments!

Take away ALL those government bailouts and subsidies and tax breaks for the corporations and where is the economy? Where is the money going to come from to fill in that hole?

This is not an argument to continue the government spending just an observation that if you take away the politicians credit cards we'll be taking about $600 billion dollars of economic activity away. Good luck with that plan and yet we know it can't continue like this.

Total food stamps in the USA as of Aug 2012 -- 47,102,780 an .8% increase over the prior month and a 2.9% over Aug 2011~12. Tell us about those "new jobs" everyone in the media is fixated on.

Yeah the "new job" ha! The words have a historical significance. The words conjure up images of a better life and standard of living. NOT ANY MORE!

Go sell your "job growth" bullshit someplace else.

Between the taxes, fines, and fees and the student loan gouging this operation is creating a life of indentured servants and Obama is not going to help you nor the Mayor, nor even the Governor or aldermen. They all work for the corporations who fund their campaign donations.

Prepare the riot gear as we go down the path of Greece and Spain...as our politicians piss away things like $55 million dollars on parks in this city.

We think it's gonna get ugly soon

What's all the talk about station security? Wear your vest and gun. Technically were sitting ducks anywhere we go. For example sitting in marked car writing or typing reports, eating in restaurants going on calls Ect...... In other words by being the police. Stay alert and trust no one at all times.
