Forty More Sergeants?

They promoted 40 more sergeants Friday, fulfilling one of Rahm's and McJersey's promises about three classes and about 120 or so sergeants this year.

For you media types reading, that's 120 fewer patrol officers on top of the officers lucky enough to retire.

So Rahm's "500" officers being hired isn't keeping up with attrition yet, nor is it keeping up with promotions from within.

Congratulations to the deserving.  We'll see if we can find a list shortly.

Yeah but that's also 40 or "so" sgt's that have been waiting over 6 years for that call. It means so much to those that did finally get called and their families that unless you're in that position you just wont understand.

Many of them studied their butt's off to make it to that spot on the list in hopes to give their families a better life. I am one of them and i put my entire life on hold for over 6 months while i studied for the test. I got a decent score and prayed that they would make it to my number. I have no clout and have a family that i desperately want to give a better life to.

I understand that patrol is short b/c i'm coming from there, but promotions are good. WIthout the hope of getting promoted or "moving up" what kind of career is this. You need to know that if you work hard and study hard that good things are possible. Don't give up hope and don't fall into the trap of "only the clouted get promoted."

I'm proof that it's not true.

What the hell is going on?!?! I mean really, do we need more effing sergeants?? Add into the mix the facts that A) any recruits in the academy around now won't be on the streets for about a half year, B) they'll be pretty much useless for about 2 years unless they're thrown into the belly of the beast (003, 005, 007, 011, 015 etc) and C) there's almost no one worth their salt to field train these new kids. The slippery slope started a few years ago and it ain't getting better.

Yeah, sure! Let's make MORE sergeants. THAT'S what we need. Un-fucking-real.

New Study released November 9

Hiring More Police Could Produce Big Payoff in Violent Crime Reduction: Study

Taking a close look at levels of police staffing and crime rates in medium to large U.S. cities between 1960 and 2010, Aaron Chalfin and Justin McCrary of the University of California at Berkeley conclude that policing levels can have an effect on violent crime and that cities employ too few police. The researchers say that each dollar spent on police is associated with about $1.60 in reduced victimization costs.
In a paper presented today at the Association of Public Policy Analysis and Management, meeting in Baltimore, the authors say that "the precision of our estimates allows us to confirm the common and somewhat surprising finding [in earlier research] that police have more of an influence on violent crime than on property crime." The researchers compare costs and benefits of policing in various cities, finding, for example, that every dollar spent on policing in Sunnyvale, Ca., yields only 20 cents in benefits in terms of crime reduction. By contrast, every dollar spent on policing in Gary, In., yields $14 in benefits in terms of crime reduction.

They made a new class of sergeants? You mean I retired three weeks too early? Jeez, I could'a been a sergeant! Imagine, those stripes all new on my uniforms, a new locker and everything on midnights over in 011 or 007 or 005. And that extra pay, woooeeee, Damn, sorry I missed another chance at promotion. As it is, retirement is fantastic. Not once since I retired have I found my jaw clenched tightly as I listened to some moron boss try to explain some ridiculous department maneuver. Just as well that I missed it. Now if they were to promote me up to lieutenant, well, that might be worthwhile.

Gotta go, my Saturday morning cartoons are on, something that makes sense at last!

Do you think McBoozer has learned the trick of counting detailed out officers twice? As in counted in their assigned and detailed to units? That would give an immediate bump in manpower reported to the media. The media is too stupid to know the difference. They only question and investigate when it is a police officer being investigated, Then they go for the solid witnesses from the hood.

The entire point of Mr. Shithead's "promotions" is twofold. First, he'll attempt to use it in arbitration to try and get rid of step raises claiming how "they don't need longevity pay because the HAVE the opportunity to get promoted now".

Point #2: Mr. RuntFuck will use these newly minted sergeants AGAINST veteran sergeants during contract negotiations. RahmFuck is clearly betting that these people who just started getting paid more money will gladly give up such things as daily prep time, uniform allowance and possibly even duty availability pay, since they just got a nice pay bump and it's no sweat off their brow to give up a little since they'll still be making thousands more a year than they were.

Watch and see....let's see how the vote goes for sergeants in the contract. Let's see what they give up and fuck the majority of us with.

For that matter, let's see what newly made Lts. do against veteran Lts.

The Runfuck's thinking is: give an idiot 10K more in salary a year and they'll gladly forego the miscellaneous 3 to 5 K.

None of these people will likely mind increasing their pension payments another 30% either, since they're still running home with more than they had before.

It's designed to FUCK the 90% of the department, NOT to create adequate management.

120 SGTs to be made and of that 120 people who studied, some legit, others with help, 36 "super duper" people will be made by "MERIT"

So, if you worked hard and have no "super duper" skills or no "clout," I mean "MERIT" — then you're out. I think they are right around the number 300 total to be made off that last list. If you scored near 300 you would still be 90 out because of all of these exceptional leaders (the ones who could not even score as high as you did to begin with) but they will be better at the job than you. They have "MERIT" and you do not.

Can you see why there are so many who are bitter with this job now? I hope others of you will finally understand what the "dogs" and old timers who sit on the back wall of the roll calls were talking about now. This job is so screwed up.

Hell, we cannot even get a leader of our department from within — we have to bring in outsiders. I guess the Mayor knows that all of these MERIT people are coming home to the roost and he has no choice but to go outside and look for someone who is at least "qualified".

But let me be the first to say to the newest MERIT promoted "congrats to XXXX... he/she will be a great SGT because he/she is a great guy/gal".

We make fun of the savages because they are sheep but we are no better. Sad.

We don't need more supervisors. We need boots on the ground! Hire more cops! The media doesn't know that the chicago police department is very different than many others. In other major departments the Sgt.'s are right there with the P.O.'s doing police work, but in chicago once they get the white shirt they do nothing but watch. They may find a mover or parker and make the copper right it, but they feel they are above doing any police work. So yes, the department has lost 120 police officers to promotions. 120 less cops responding to 911 calls now.

So for anyone wondering...the entire hiring process is held up for the candidates. The people who do the oral psych exams are the main stoppage because they "don't know what's going on. We didn't know that there was a random hiring list with numbers that CPD was using" and that an "oral psych exam in the future is looking slim right now." That's what the psych exam people said. How the hell do you not know that there is a list after testing over 4,000 candidates? Is anyone in the news media going to hold Rahm responsible for lying about hiring 500 cops? Or better yet, is anyone in the news media going to expose the fact that the city does NOT give veterans preference points with their hiring despite saying that they do?

"Pension Reform"?

Let's call it what it really is and stop with the political words games.

It's pension theft plain and simple.

They are trying to cut the pensions and place the burden of the banking failures, the corporate bailouts and the governments regulators failures on the backs of the middle class and the poor. People that can least afford it.

This is a litmus test and should they get away with it the next round will be even worse.

Pension reform, it's a breaking of the social contract.

It's a transfer of wealth from people that have played by all the rules the right way.

YES IT'S AN ENTITLEMENT!! THE REASON IT'S CALLED AN ENTITLEMENT IS THAT PEOPLE WORKED THEIR ENTIRE LIFE FOR IT AND HAVE EARNED IT!

How about we do a Mayoral wage and benefit reform or an aldermen wage reform. We really mean wage cuts but that will likely not go over so well so let's just call it a reform eh?

Tax the elite to fix your alleged budget problems that way.

The income differential is higher than it's ever been.

Do NOT try and deceive people by calling the pension thefts by labeling the process "a reform". You're stealing peoples money! It pension cuts they're talking about.

Don't tell us that you cannot afford our pensions when you're pissing away $55 million dollars on a park.

Don't tell us that you cannot afford our pensions when you're handing out million dollar corporate tax breaks to your clouted friends.

Don't tell us that you cannot afford our pensions as you let the homicide rate soar costing the taxpayers on average $400,000 per homicide to investigate and prosecute -- while shelling out $53,000 dollars to each gun shot wounded victim for emergency healthcare.

These politicians selling us this krap need to go. We can and will do better!

We hear all this talk about Ethics.

Try and get an answer other than NO COMMENT from the mayor on tuff issues or his use of discretionary power.

Did the children's museum on Navy Pier receive any tax breaks for signing a 90 year lease mayor ? NO COMMENT.

Why did the you tell the AG in Minn. to back off on Accretive Healthcare investigation mayor? NO COMMENT.

A sincere congratulations to those on the list, FROM the list. After scoring in the top 250 of all those taking the sergeants exam, and waiting 6+ years for the promotion, they deserve it. And, sorry, I happen to disagree that the promotional class equates to taking 40 officers from the pool of patrol officers. When they graduate, some of these sergeants will do just as much if not more than the many, many dogs working each watch that are counted as patrol officers. Man, we complain when they don't promote and we complain when they do. We coppers are a hard bunch to please sometimes. Is it time for a new exam? Absolutely. Is it time to stop promoting from this one until that list is up? No. What kind of message does that send to the troops as tthey begin pouring over their GOs? Even if you score in the top 300 of what could be 8,000 officers taking the test, there's only a 50/50 chance you'll actually be promoted.

Job fair for the City, but no way to apply for those jobs...

11/10/2012 12:39:00 PM

===============================

Because the jobs don't really exist. Only going thru the motions does.

This jobs fair, attempting to build a sense of excitement, work on the hopes and dreams of a better life and future if you just work a little harder and play by the rules is a fraud.

It's a fraud like your union contracts are a fraud. Like the pensions and healthcare promises are a fraud.

That's how this three ring illusion works.

Don't you love how the media switches to reporting on the number of jobs being posted on some irrelevant internet jobs board as a measure of how well we're doing with unemployment and the economy too?

Posting an ad for a job is not necessarily a new job being created or a job that needs to be filled.

Corporations do it all the time for several reasons and I don't doubt that politicians encourage it, using it as a tool to maintain social order

The same holds true for a job fair.

There's millions of people currently unemployed, with experience in highly skilled positions ranging from Computers and I/T to Health Care. From Aviation to Welding, Machinist and Mechanics.

Anyone buying into the mayors propaganda that there is some kind of skilled qualified worker shortage is a fool. If you don't see the wages increasing in a profession than there is no shortage plain and simple. The law of supply and demand.

A plan to dupe one out of ones money and savings. Perhaps to entice you to take out a student loan for some new certificate or certification that you don't have.

Oh yeah if I only had THAT certification that's the key that will end my employment issues, blah, blah, blah.. been there done that.

We have an overcapacity of labor that's currently available. Asia has billions of people willing and able to do every single job here.

With our current policies do not think that your job is safe because it can't be sent offshore. To solve that problem the US corporations have lobbied for and won the H1-B immigrant visa program to allow the Corps to bring the immigrants here. For the lower level positions we just don't care about anything as we are the Sanctuary city so just let them in no visa or documentation required.

A Jobs Fair how nice. Corp's in attendance can churn their currently employed workers to a lower wage and benefit scale should they determine that there's a significant number of qualified people that are desperate.

I'm proof that it's not true.

who cares... this job is all about taking as many tests as you can and getting promoted. Who really gives a sh*t about attrition, what rahm is saying and what mcbigmouth says. Im not going to make it on this sgts list.. ive come to that realization since im so far out but who cares. Good for those guys/gals who got made. We are blue shirts, we will always get the crap end of the stick. Obviously alot of people on the job now have NO CLUE about what it was like when we did not have a union. Good luck getting ANY day off with "time due".. you pretty much had to solve who killed hoffa back in those days to get overtime. Cry all you want about manpower and getting a day off denied here and there... you have no idea what it could be. Lets face it, we are spoiled rotten these days. Be glad we have all the perks we do now. I love it when guys complain about sh*tty cars when the cars start up, drive, HAVE WORKING AIR CONDITIONING but might smell a little.. or the stearing wheel might feel a little loose.. or the seats are dirty or it has 125000 miles on it and no pdt... please, give me a break you have no idea what a crappy car is in the middle of a 100 degree day. Pdt's???? you dont need a PDT to do police work. You dont have one then get the info and go into the station everytime and put yourself down doing your reports and relax. Spoiled rotten little brats these days. Congrats SGTS, take that LT test and get yourself made again.. its all about that pension in the end.

Congrats to our new Sgt's from the list. I wonder what qualifies some for Merit & others don't even get considered? Take a guy with 20+ years, FTO & good all-a-round Cooper & another guy from a different district with the same credentials - one get an interview & one doesn't but both have no juice...is it one is Hispanic & one the othet is white?
A certain boss once told me "as a white guy with no juice you better study your balls off bc the brass don't want you. He said enough of my kind already get promoted off the list, it's the others that need the help...boy was he right! P.S. I scored under 350 on the Sgt's test - I guess I'll give it another shot next summer...oh wait their calling on the radio. Good night & be safe!

.......$15,000 is just the base salary increase. Add the $6000 in "supervisor differential" each year and the .75 hrs per day that you cash in at the end of the year (about 190 hrs) which equals about $9000... 15k+6k+9k = $30,000 PER YEAR RAISE!!!!. Multiply that by say 20 more years on the job ... $600,000. If $600,000 doesn't make your life better, I dont know what will. Know the facts before you speak. Talk to one on the Sgts. in your unit. I will be studying my ass off for this next test!!! Nice raise without getting burned out in court.

"Pension Reform"?

Let's call it what it really is and stop with the political words games.

It's pension theft plain and simple.

Illinois politicians don't fear the electorate. There's no downside to doing what they do.

Jesse Jackson Jr.: Missing congressman, re-elected.

The other goof, indicted congressman: re-elected.

Cynthia Brim, Insane Judge: retained.

They will continue to perform their nefarious deeds and as long as they get re-elected, will have no fear.

Illinois is done. Only 23 of Illinois' 102 counties voted blue. Little wonder downstate wants to jettison Cook County. We DON'T reflect their values.

Just read this Blog and you will see Blue Shirts are the enemy of White Shirts. P.O.'s have nothing nice to say about supervisors.

11/10/2012 04:24:00 PM

Once upon a time both sergeants and police officers wore blue shirts. Sergeant's simply had chevrons on their shirts. I liked the symbolism of that, sergeants were more kin to PO's than the white shirts. It was a simpler time. Better too.

Hey Troll, we as department know that we have never made that many arrests in three years combined.

Maybe 18,200 arrests, over 5-8 years.

Yes we are also aware that our hair gel generation of cops will just assume what you posted was true.

The hair gel's will read this post, scratch their stale head's, accept your insane stat as truth (because it was said so on the blog) and then ask for time-due because its Saturday night, and they have something better to do.

182,000- arrests in 11 months. Do the math hair gels.

Hey Congratulations to those who made this list. I hope that you enjoy the position and salary raise.

As a 20 year, please remember that your hard workers should always deserve recognition and breaks. That your dogs may have once been great officers, and that you verify, and not rely on stories of others.

Remeber you were once a blue shirt, and that you ARE their friends, and don't expect anything more than you wouldn't have done yourself.

Lastly.

A CR number is NOT an "investigative tool" it is a marker that is used in an officers profile for IPRA and IAD.

You don't always have to generate a number.

They sold that line of bullshit about four years ago, and it still works on ignorant supervisors today.

Good luck to you all.

Compare this years arrests to years past. Arrests are down, gun recoveries are down. From what I understand the jail and the prison system population is also down. Look at the numbers for the last ten and twenty years. And the weak ass arrest numbers you quote are bull shit ANOVS. In the past an arrest was a physical arrest as the Dept issued very few quasi criminal complaint tickets compared to since Cline left. If you dont think this is in a plan for the city you can live with your head in the sand but everytime you house a criminal the city fears a law suit. The courts have as much come right out and told you to stop arresting people with the law suits where the cops have to pay out of their personal money. I dont think its dramatic at all I think its the new reality. Perhaps one day you will figure it out.

I've been on the job 20 years and I never took advantage of going to college on the cities dime to take the Sgt's test and I look back now at my career and I can say that I'm thankful for not doing it. Would the money have been helpful? Of course but as I draw closer to retiring (20 and out in may) I thank God for protecting me from the animals out there but also from a job who tries to jam up a copper and take not only his pension but his ability to feed his family. A job that will not protect its Officers when they feel that the world is bearing down on them with family stresses or marital woes and that theres now way out except for his own gun. Then you add the stress of leading men who are angry at the job or just want to skate by and be a dog ass copper. Or good guys that make an honest mistake and you have to be the bearer of bad news and tell him that you have to discipline him which might lead to his firing. Some guys can do that in their sleep. Look at the bosses we have now but I sure as hell cant. I was a Sgt in a real Military and took care of my men but the City wont allow Sgts to LEAD or take care of his men. I'm sure that theres going to be guys that will add their 2 cents and its expected but just remember guys, How can you love a job that wont love you back.
BE safe and hope you're 20 go by as quick as mine so far.

Thank you for missing birthday parties, graduations, family picnics and dinners. Thank you for missing your daughters dance recital and your sons football games. Thank you officer for running toward the sound of gun shots when most would run and hide. Thank you officer for keeping an eye on our block because you would be the first one I call when there is a suspicious person lurking around my house. I think you might be talking about me. (Or a number of other coppers trying to make ends meet). Let me tell you how my REAL schedule works since you are SO interested. I actually work 1st watch. To non-workers like yourself that would be the "overnight shift" "graveyard" or whatever you unemployed people call it. I go into work at 2200 (10:00 pm) and work in a district far from my home. I get off at 0700 (7 am) and get home in time to wake my kids up, make their lunches, and send them off to school. By the time you roll out of the fart-sack at the crack of 10 you see me leaving to work my "side-job". (For unemployed people like you that would be a SECOND job) I work at the local school from 1000 to 1500 (3pm) so little pot-smokers (like your son) are safe and can learn. When you see me finally get home around 3:00 (or to put it in terms you might inderstand "between People's Court and Judge Mathis) I go in, hit the sack for a few hours and get up and do it again.
My point is this. Unless you know what someone is REALLY doing, stay off OUR blog and mind your own business.

Ya, right . Believe this bullshit and it will get you in trouble. I tried to filter out some of these complaints when I was a sergeant and not get a CR number. I did generate a case report though. In each and every instance it got me jammed up. The department will jam you if you do not get a CR number within one hour. In one case I did not have a telephone with me and could not access a phone at the time. It did not matter. Yes, I was trying to be the good guy and reason these things out and it does not work. Protect yourself as a sergeant and just get the number. It is the way things work,

A lot of guys complaining about manpower yes we are short, but the real problem is at least 30% of my fellow workers at least in my district don't do shit lay down on jobs, are too stupid to do the job or a combination of both. Like I said I agree we're short but if the dogs quit hitting the medical and people handled they're jobs in a timely fashion we would be much better off. One more thing supervisors why don't you try and actually supervise, it you have a piece of shit on your log spar them if you have to, do your job. Same guys come late every day same guys dog jobs and no one does shit para military my ass departments a joke.

11/10/2012 04:31:00 PM
I think 30% is a low estimate. You get fired for doing something and making a mistake. I have never heard of someone fired or disciplined for not doing anything. As a matter of fact, they might get promoted. And, if you are a good looking women even more doors will be open to you. When the superintendent starts to demote exempts who sleep with their subordinates nothing will change in that department either. Until that changes it is pretty hard to get some of these folks to do any work.

what you do is mind your own fkn business... too many cry babies on this job... and by the way, dont give me your "my neighbor" crap. Your a blueshirt who complains day in and day out about anything and everything. You dont have to like people in units or perks or etc but dont be bitter just because its not you. I did the whole unit thing and now im back in the the district... guys like you are a dime a dozen whining everyday at roll call while everyone else just rolls their eyes and listens to your crap. Im not jealous of guys in units.. Good for them they made it there and they might have a good gig.. wish it was me but its not.. enjoy it while it lasts because like with me nothing lasts forever... im not mad, im not bitter its just a fact of life. The watch is ok and I have no complaints.. 5 more years and I hit my 29 and a day. its been a good run. if your young and bitter then good luck to you... your gonna worry and complain yourself into a YOUNG death... its the bitter people who had no fun on this job who are the first ones to die. Make the job work for you and have a blast. Stop complaining about time due denied, shitty furloughs etc. Grab the keys, grab a radio and do your job. If you cant find fun in the middle of writing paper and riding on jobs then you have a serious issue.

You're an idiot!......signed Management

Consider yourself lucky that he's around so much to protect you.....

.....you're probably the same neighbor who asks him for advice all the time.

If righteous any citizen uses deadly force to defeat an attacker or kill a home invader one of the stated reasons they should make is that is is now common knowledge that the CPD has been decimated. There are not enough police to respond to calls for help especially in "quiet neighborhoods".

McGeneralissimo dodged questions about police manpower last week in front of the city counsel.

Let's get some lawyer to subpoena him and give up those numbers.

Why is it that the FOP won't tell you what number they're at on the list so that the clout less ,legit people know where they stand?

11/11/2012 09:58:00 AM

What were you expecting from the FOP?

1. How old is the U.S. Marine Corp?
2. How old is the U.S. Marine Corp? (take two)_
3. How you can get college course in to get out of FOP at St. Xavier Univ?

Where we are in contract negotiations?
Who made Sgt?
NOT SO MUCH . . .

Why are you bothering them on holidays? uuggghh!

Once upon a time both sergeants and police officers wore blue shirts. Sergeant's simply had chevrons on their shirts. I liked the symbolism of that, sergeants were more kin to PO's than the white shirts. It was a simpler time. Better too.

That white shirt makes a better target for offenders!! Easier to see at night, too!!

Is not having all 10 guys on your tact team deciding on the same lunch spot the most serious disappointment of your career? If so you are a joke! Maybe some of the guys are kiss asses that spend their days talking shit about the others to the Sgt. like one of the guys in 019 tact.

""Lets face it, we are spoiled rotten these days. Be glad we have all the perks we do now. I love it when guys complain about sh*tty cars when the cars start up, drive, HAVE WORKING AIR CONDITIONING but might smell a little.. or the stearing wheel might feel a little loose..""

Yah, We had a union when I got on but perks? Time due is a perk? Time Due is DUE ME, because I didn't hit them in the pocket book.

Working air? -- I would hope so, since we are REQUIRED (not to mention its a good idea) to wear a vest. Pretty damn hot otherwise with a sheet of heavy plastic wrapped around you.

Steering a little loose? that would be UNSAFE. Broken steering knuckle on a tahoe where your whole wheel assembly goes driving off on its own? that would be unsafe, not only for me, but the poor pedestrian in the wheel's way (happened in my district)

The PDT, I'll give you that one....Nothing on this job that cant be done on the back of a missile x card. Spoiled? maybe a little, rotten, no.

11/11/2012 09:24:00 AM

And it's really that simple sometimes.
And - neighbor - you're not very neighborly.

I've been around the block a few times, gone to units, been promoted.

I have to say, the time I spent in patrol was the most fun I've ever had. I wish I would have had more time there.

If you're "stuck" in patrol, make the best of it--you'll look back and agree, it's where there was the most cammeraderie (sp?) and where you had the most fun. Make it fun. You'll live a lot longer. Otherwise, your partner will have a long tour!
