A little bit of hyperbole there - why not demonize alcohol?
- Calling disgraced cop Anthony Abbate “the monster that the City of Chicago created,” beaten bartender Karolina Obrycka’s lawyer Tuesday urged a federal jury to deliver a rebuke against police brutality by awarding damages to Obrycka.
But lawyers for the city countered that it should not pay for Abbate’s notorious off-duty attack “simply because it employed” him, saying Abbate was “just another drunk, acting stupid.”
And Abbate’s own attorney argued that Abbate shouldn’t give Obrycka a single cent because there’s nothing in Obrycka’s lawsuit that requires compensation for the beating on Feb. 19, 2007.
We certainly hope she soaks "the monster" for every cent she can. And we wouldn't mind seeing Abbate in the stocks in Daley Plaza every year on the anniversary of his video appearance where taxpayers and cops alike could toss rotten tomatoes at him.
But to hold "Chicago" responsible instead of the individuals who greased his way through the application and background investigatory process? Start hammering the enablers, the phone calls, the chinamen. You recommend someone, back someone, promote someone, then you should put your name out there, your reputation, your assets. Stop blaming the "culture" of Chicago clout and start naming names.

We have all seen people like this and worse who seem to be bulletproof. People who keep their job in spite of overwhelming evidence they should be fired. People who we know should not have been hired. In the days of paper reports I had connected arrestees let go before the lockup keeper got the CB on them and I was told that is the way it is. All the paperwork simply disappeared.
Sad to say but it was the culture of clout that did shit like that. Abaate is just a product of the way it was done around the CPD for many years. I can name more but who cares, it won't correct years of doing things the wrong way.
I feel the woman is right. But whether she deserves any money is another thing. At least she and her friends knew enough to record shit otherwise that "culture of clout" would have steamrollered over any proof in this case. Nothing changes around here until the City loses lawsuits, sometimes big ones or lots of smaller ones.
You are dreaming SCC. We are all going to pay for the hiring of the monster. The bartender will return to Poland in style and live like a queen on the settlement.

All is well! Bill Daley is now going to run for Governor. How lucky we are. His brother, little Richie, looted and bankrupted the city. His brother John assisted in bankrupting the county. The Daley's must have figured out that there still is some public money that they missed. This tribe of thieving rats just cant get enough.
Let's remember the illegal alien that was more than happy to feed the monster alcohol every night. As long as some mope had a dollar, our 'victim' was more than willing to give him cheap booze every night. Then she'd send him on his way, in his car, drunk...... but she made a buck.
Abbatte is a useless human being, but forgive me if I don't want to give the bartender a bunch of taxpayer money.
The problem is not Chicago rather the problem was Cline and his chosen command staff!
These incidents happened under Cline and as a result CPD got stuck first with Weis and now McCarthy.

You have to wonder what the Civil Rights Office of DOJ told Daley and what he promised them to end their potential takeover of CPD.
I have no doubt an enterprising reporter will eventually investigate and it will be on the front pages of newspapers all over the world!

Agreed, especially about the stocks. But part of the "culture" in question here is NOT naming names. Things just. . . happen. As more than one columnist pointed out regarding the Vanecko case, Richard M. Daley would never have had to sully his hands with direct intervention. Yes, my old partner works in the new ivory Tower. Anyway, you can look at one more class of 50 being made. Then it is debatable if they will use the new test and list for any future promotions.
So, you will not make it being 50 out because as you know there will be 15 super special people, who are better than you or I, and anyone else, who will be promoted.
They will push you back and on the ledge...

That's why alcohol should be banned in the city. Lets follow the example of Colorado and Washington state and legalize Marijuana. Abbate (with new law)would then try to make love with the bartendress instead of fighting.

Bar owners face liability for over-served customers all the time. Why not in this instance?
If Joe the Muffler Guy is a terrible drunk and gets into trouble off-duty, is the muffler shop responsible for his actions?
Even if Joe's boss knows him to be a drunk, is it his responsibility to take care of him when he's not working?
If Joe's friends at the muffler shop try to attenuate the impact (no pun intended) of Joe's actions, without the sanction of the muffler shop owner, is the muffler shop responsible?
All of these things are what they like to hang on us all he time when we do something while working, that might not quite fit in with out duties/training; "beyond the scope of your employment."
