An Accountable School Board?
We can't see Rahm letting it happen. He'd have to surrender too much power:
- Independent Chicago aldermen vowed Thursday to push for a citywide referendum on an elected school board opposed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, emboldened by 86 percent support from voters in parts of 35 different wards.
Despite a parliamentary maneuver by a mayoral ally that blocked referenda in 10 Chicago wards, education activists in 327 precincts went door-to-door to gather the signatures needed to put the elected school board question on the ballot. The results were overwhelming. By an 86.6 percent margin, 65,763 Chicagoans said they would prefer an elected school board to the current system of seven mayoral appointees confirmed by the City Council.
Chicago has the only school district in the state that does not have an elected school board.

Yeah, we've seen how successful Chicago/Cook County elections are.
Who will be running in these elections? Where will their funding come from?
Do we really want to see more campaign commercials?
I'm not saying taking control away from Emanuel is a bad thing, but I'm unimpressed by the actions of the electorate thus far.

"..."independent aldermen?" What are there, like two of them? "
There's two? We know one lives in Washington right? hahaha.
rham is a tyrant...garry is a fool.. our bosses follow them like lap dogs and will do anything to keep their spots, go out and work harder for them while they refuse to higher more police and demand more work out of you. they are trying to steal your pension but they are getting more and more. wake the hell up..

Funny, we in the 40th ward never see these petitions.
Never see precinct captain either.
"Independent aldermen."
Now class, define an oxymoron.
Chicago doesn't have to do what the rest of the state does, don't you know?
Who cares if the rest of the state has elected school boards? Chicago does what it wants.
Who cares if the rest of the state wants concealed carry? Chicago does what it wants.
Chicago pols have no shame. So disgusting.
Yet Chicago pols are the first to use other states and cities as examples--when they want to.
Too bad we can't chip Chicago off from the rest of the country and send it adrift toward Antarctica.
1.7 years left in this crap hole.
We're going to allow voters that reelect Brim, Jackson and Smith to build a little power base at the schools? These idiots have done enough damage already. The next thing they'd do is figure out how to spend some more money on shit that the children's parents should take care of with their damn welfare earnings.
I think "independent" means, "I'm not getting my share of the pie you're cutting. "
Wait a minute. No cap and gown pictures of 40 year old gangsters who get clipped? No evidence of a thug-life turnaround gone awry? What next, the Mayor of Oz giving out certificates and diplomas to the brainless?
TinyD does NOT LIKE ANY challenges to his authority!! (or power to put lackeys in important positions) This will fought tooth and nail. Any "independent" alderthieves will be dealt with...
Who's gonna run ? You have to give them Walgreen cards just to try and get them to pick up a friggin report card. Unless there is something free in it for them they won't bother anyway. Rahm overseeing is the lesser of 2 great evils.
The 50% graduation rate is BS, it's way lower than that. I spoke to a principal at one of our not so fine high schools and couldn't believe what he told me.
Example: There is a freshman class of 500. 4 years later, over half of them drop out along the way leaving a senior class of 250. Half of them may graduate so the city claims a 50% graduation rate. But the actual rate is closer to 25%. Some schools are as bad as 10% when you count all the kids that came in as freshman.
OT - Interesting
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A photojournalist for CBS 5 San Francisco was beaten and robbed of his camera by a group of young men in Oakland following a live newscast report Wednesday.
Photographer Gregg Welk and reporter Anne Makovec had just finished their noon report on the passage of Prop 30 in front of Oakland Technical High School on the 4300 block of Broadway.
After the live shot, an unknown number of men rushed up, punched Welk and grabbed his camera, according to CBS 5 Communications Director Akilah Bolden-Monifa.
The men then fled in a car with the camera. Welk suffered minor injuries, was treated at a hospital and released, according to Bolden-Monifa. Makovec was not hurt.
The attack was the latest among a series of incidents involving members of the press in Oakland. In recent months, journalists with the Oakland Tribune, KTVU and KNTV have been accosted and robbed of laptops, cameras and tripods. The cost of broadcast-quality cameras can run into the tens of thousands of dollars each.
During last year’s Occupy Oakland protests, a number of TV news vans were vandalized and a photographer for KGO-TV attacked while covering a murder near the Occupy encampment.
I think you're a little optimistic with the reading level. A few years ago the former director of the CPD academy, ROBERTS (I forget his first name) said in an interview that we were getting recruits in the academy who had 60 semester hours of college credit but who read at a grade level lower than seventh, possibly as low as fourth.
Follow the money...
Who is behind this? The teachers union.
They know they will be able to buy the school board by electing 'their' candidates.
You think it's bad having Rahm in charge of the schools? Wait till Karen Lewis controls the schools and sits on both sides of the negotiating table. (figuratively, of course....)
Good lets have that school board vote and while we are at it put one up to the voters to reduce the city counsel to 20 members which is about right based on what other cities do and the reduction in population.
Let's pause to note the irony: this item appears directly above an item about Jesse Jackson, Jr. JJJr, who has been elected repeatedly.
You want a school board full of JJJr's?
I hate to say it, but I actually think there's a possibility the current system can get us better school board members. If used wisely, of course . . . yeah, I know. there's the hitch.
The same morons who put the judges, aldercrooks, and . . . rahm in office should vote for a school board? Good grief. It'll be nothing but "preachers" and "activists."
How silly and naive of these people to think that they actually live in a democracy where this vote would mean anything. Those days are long gone.
Boy when I went to public school in the 60's and 70's we took the Iowa tests. I remember having a 11th grade math score and 12th grade reading level in fifth grade. What happened to CPS?
High school graduates reading at a 7 grade level, unprepared for college and totally unemployable.
Its believable. Back in the early 90's the class valedictorian of Orr H.S. on the west side went to Junior college and failed in her first year. I would say that was being unprepared for college.
So anything is better then what we have.

Preckwinkle just announced that in the new County budget there will be a $25 gun purchase fee! WTF kind of shit is this? You think the thugs will pay this? Hell no just legitimate schmucks like us will get tagged with this.
I got an idea Toni instead of sandbagging legitimate gun buying citizens why don't you cut your over bloated government?
Surprised?
I am
Not at fact that 86%+ of Chicago is p/o'd at mayor 1%'bs
But that some aldercretins are actually showing some "spine"
If brushing up on Robert's Rules Of Order is needed
Great
Getting referendums might laborious but it's start to institute change
Arena and Wags call themselves independant democrats. It's all a scam folks. Just like Kass giving time in his column for Daley running for Governor. Just like Petraus having an affair and stepping down so that he cannot tesilie about Obamas involvement in Bengazigate.
We're done.
Amerika
What comes next?

PO's are exempt from the $25 fee. Just the same, though, purchase your shit out of Crook County.
"Elected" and "Accountable" are mutually-exclusive in Illinois.
e.g. Jesse Jackson Jr., Derrick Smith, Cynthia Brim...

It's ok! City colleges lowering their standards, too!
