If we're breaking this down correctly, it works out to 17 promotions from the Districts, 10 from the D-unit, 8 assigned to units and 6 detailed out to units. 41 total and the majority from Patrol. That's unusual enough.
We were also informed that in the last two classes, the city has declined to fill their 30% "merit" for some reason. The previous class was under 25%. No idea on this one. Is this some sort of trend?

Do the math, there are so many clouted merit hacks in sgt ranks that need their special spots to save them from the real job of Patrol Sgt, that they had to make some real police the rank of sgt to fill the many openings in patrol especially with the flood of retirees. There will still be a few from this list that won't be assigned patrol very long. Old retired Sgt responding to the inquiry or was the inquiry in jest? As I said I am Old! lol either way..

The only reason the city used 25 percent was because Tracie Ladner pulled that stunt skipping over 4 people off the list. So the city had to make more then planned that class. the city got caught trying to pull an end around and got caught. Trust me this is not a trend, the city will never voluntarily give up the merit picks. Merit will never go away.

Why do we even care about people that get promoted by merit. Maybe 2 or 3 really deserve it the rest have probably never worked on street and they get to make decisions that will affect the outcome or maybe these same people go back to their cushy spot and never hit the street.

The list is at 244 or 245. The truth about Merit is the last two classes did not use all the picks. This class has 33 off the list and 8 merit. The last class used 20%. Easy math tells you 40 were off the list and 10 were merit. Word is for the remainder of this list 20% will be the max on merit. The dept supposedly wants to get to at least 300 on the list.

It's been 25 percent for the last 3 sgt classes. Believe it or not McCarthy is not big on merit picks. He has lowered the percentage on his own. Fan or not he has done this since the sgt association asked him to. This has been going on since the sergeants association worked out an agreement with the city to end the lawsuit on the last Lt's test. The suit was draining the coffers on both sides. Thanks Pbpa and the sup's office for doing what's right.

Good it should be 10% Merit!!!! I am glad Mcarthy is seeing right through this current merit scam. I know there are people that deserve to make sgt. that do not test well, but it ain't 30%!!! I met maybe 2-3 in my 16 years.
Even before this list came out there were a couple of the new Sgts that came out last week making their calls to get back to their spots. Looks like a couple of them didn't expect to have to work in Patrol. "What do you mean midnights? Uh, that doesn't work for me." And to you week old sgts-don't for a second think your crys to your "guy" aren't getting back and pissing off your new commander because they are! Just remember, your promotion took away your seniority, and you can't make your own schedules anymore like you did in your days in the unit. Your just another slug in Patrol now.
Rumor has it that McNutty doesn't really like merit. Each class he wants it reduced by 5% and that is the trend so far. He has looked over the past merit promotions and was not impressed. If verified, it's at least ONE thing he does I can agree with.

I am a new meritorious Sgt. I have already started telling myself I scored well and made it off the list. In ten years I will believe this as fact and tell POs how they need to study hard.
For what it's worth...
A while back Supt. McCarthy approached the Sgt.'s union and asked them what traits 'they' would like to see in consideration for merit picks.
Given a few recommendations they closed with stating that the present city merit choice of 30% was too high.
McCarthy, at that time, agreed that 30% was in fact too high and indicated that he would like to use a reduced number of merit picks and take more in rank order.
This may be a result of his agreement and opinion that 30% was not reasonable.
Again, for what it's worth... don't kill the messenger, just a FYI.

When the contract negotiations roll around, we don't need the headlines to be about some drunken brawl because some hothead can't keep his bravado in check.

Because it's not hard work or ethics. There are people on this list who's ethics, integrity & morality are questionable. What dirt do these individuals have on the "Upper Brass". On NYPD Detective promotion is 100% merit or whatever they call it.
McCarthy Hates merit , he couldn't believe it when he found out 99% of his command staff never scored high enough to be promoted to sgt and lt without merit , political clout . yikes

Just cuz you do not "officially" know that someone is a merit pick on paper you should know better that some people are still clouted picks but in disguise.Not everyone on this list and others got this on their high test score. Many were legit, but some werent. Sure, some people scored very high - but are you so foolish to think some of these guys weren't invited to "special invite only" study groups and got questions-answers under the table ?C'mon this is corrupt Chi-town ! Most, but not always, everything on this job involving promotions is a big giant charade. Fortunateley some people slip through the cracks but those bosses are getting rare to find. for the ones who got it on their own with hard studying the old fashioned way-congratts my hat off to you - good job. For the the fakes -keep taking all the credit for it that you earned it- you know the truth. Memorizing the answers to the test does not qualify as studying and intelligence

re list vs merit.
The city wants to promote more off the list simply because of the amount of money spent to conduct a promotion test. It doesn't look good if they spend millions on a test only to promote 200. They will go up to at least 300 on the list so that they don't look like fiscal idiots. However, if it's true about mc carthy not liking the "entitlement", aka merit system, kudos to him.
The worst thing about the new promotions, all the dam copper bashing. It really shows the true colors of some and is pathetic.
To those of you who are coming from 16,17, etc that have spent your entire career there, welcome to the ghetto.

Sgt list is done. 75 Det this friday 15 lts as well on friday. Lt list done as well. 50 more set in Feb then list is done as well...Test for all 3 to be given in 2013.

The City Council Finance Committee appropriated money for a Sgt's test in 2013. First part targeted for late October. No funds were set aside for a det or lt test. This info is available with about 20 minutes of searching the internet. Maybe you have more info than fat face Eddie Burke?

I've made numerous bosses look good and seen them get promoted. But guess what... they forgot the people who made them look good. The 30% merit was always UP TO 30% meaning it never had to be 30%. Kudos to the Supt for stepping up and not doing the entire 30%, Shame on prior exempts for automatically always doing 30% and screwing people with the test score out of a well deserved promotion. Sgts test in 2013, no Lts test before 2014, no info on Detectives test.

I don't care how well you scored on the test. If you have not been on the street and actually been the police rather, you put on the uniform and sit in an office all day long, for most of your career, shuffling paper and/ or running you personal security business from the time keepers office, you have no business being a Sgt. You were a fraud as an officer and I am certain you will be a fraud as a Sgt.
