Another Media Beating on the Way

  • The U.S. Justice Department has been conducting an investigation into the interrogation practices at the Chicago Police Department, and “60 Minutes” is about to break the story wide open.
CBS News chief national correspondent and “60 Minutes” contributor Byron Pitts reports one case involves a teenager, and dates back more than 25 years.

Terrill Swift, Michael Saunders, Harold Richardson, and Vincent Thames – known as the “Englewood Four” – had their convictions for a 1994 murder overturned last year, after DNA evidence cleared them of guilt.
No allegations of beatings or torture that we saw in the previews - just that everyone is intimidated into signing confessions for crimes they didn't commit, and years later after witnesses have died off, everyone remembers they didn't do it after all.

They're doing everything they can to wipe out "The 9/11 effect"; the day when police officers & firefighters were heroes that no one could challenge.

Unfortunately, we're going to have to play that card again when contract time goes hardcore.

scc just some friendly advice if you will... this story will bring in tons of negative attacks and comments about sgt K.B. I understand this, however. I know him, have worked with him and for him and I know him to be a decent guy with alot of people who are "haters" against him because he has held alot of spots that are "coveted spots". well, he is truly a decent guy. He is a nice guy and he is someone who is knowledgeable about whats happening... I think he unfortunatly got hooked into the burge crap at the wrong place and wrong time. Lets not forget, hes still a police officer, hes still one of us and he is still a human being who has a investigation looming over his head. I guarantee, if any one of the commenters had such an investigation looming over there career and life the last thing they would want is a bunch of bitter know it alls talking crap about them... just maybe take a watchful eye for the attackers who are out to degrade him instead of giving a comment that adds something to the topic. thanks. They got someone else to do their dirty work for them, that's why. And those people were perfectly happy to crawl around in the mud, and for what? What did they get for dirtying themselves?

There may well have been a reason the ASA did not want to go forward without signed confessions. Perhaps because the case sucked without one and the ASA knew. Now we find out why the case sucked - the guy didn't do it.

The case involving the teenager dates back more than 25 years. The "Englewood 4" were arrested in 1994. Almost 19 years ago. For 60 Minutes to report this information and try to blame the CPD of today for any type of improper behavior is unfortunate and irresponsible. It's extremely unlikely that anyone involved in that investigation from over 25 years ago is even still on the job. I'm sure they've retired years ago. They may have even passed away by now! Apparently, 60 Minutes' only intent on this is to make the CPD and law enforcement in general look bad. Why? It's just another battle being waged by the Powers That Be in the war against Police Officers and other public servants and our pensions. Look for more of this type of stuff in the future.

Because legally a States Attorney can't be sued. This law should be changed. They can deny charges, do anything they want and we get sued. Abbatte is a goof, but thats what happned there...Vanecko, same thing. We present what we have and they make the decision...then we get stuck with the blame and media attack.

We deal with criminals that lie like most people breath, with out a thought. They have no sense of right and wrong and in most cases we handle, there are no real victims.

That being said: Does anybody really believe we are running around putting cases on innocent victims? There are usually multiple offenders involved in any case, and we end up charging only the one we have the best case on. The rest skate, and the pooch in jail stews.

Now comes the scumbag lawyer. Throw a lot of crap on the wall years or decades later and see what sticks. Stories change, cause now we only gotta protect pookie in jail. The others are already off scott free.

So Detectives, am I pretty close? I, for one, am sure you guys don't grab a guy just to close a case. None of these cases are heaters that everyone NEEDS to have solved. It's just one criminal killing another.

The connected guys at the top are the evil ones (Daley, Devine, all Crook County politicians like Joe Berrios and his scumbag family). The majority of cops are just like the rest of the everyday honest, hard working public - we are all taking it in the ass for the connected parasites. When the shit hits the fan the politicians are nowhere to be found and the everyman has to pay. Government bankrupt due to rampant corruption and mismanagement? Raise taxes, privatize, grandstand - while their kids and friends keep getting no show jobs, no bid contracts. It's almost like we live in a fake democracy. The connected are like Communist Party members -the ruling elite. I honestly believed that until I spent the night at 111th and Ellis on a bogus arrest, back when I wasn't the police. I got charged with a domestic and a resisting, neither of which happened. Yeah something precedes being handcuffed, obviously, but I committed no criminal offense when I was arrested. At most, it was an ANOV that got reported as a domestic and resisting. I'm a cop and so is my dad. We all know some cop that will make an arrest and even write some mover and you're like "really dude?"

DNA has sprung many a guilty person. DNA is not the holy grail of exoneration. It must be interpreted properly and these nuances explained to a jury in court. If 4 men are in on a rape/murder and they only find DNA of one person who got away, that does not mean the others are innocent. We know that but that does not sell commercial time or space.

Not a cop. I have had good and bad experiences with police. The good? I got robbed coming home from the Butternut Bakery when I was 11, cops asked me what happened and a cop gave me 20 bucks to replace what was taken. The bad? Leaving a friends house at 2am and the cops pull me into the old station in Wrigleyville, did not allow me to call anyone and keep me in a room until morning telling me I am some rapist on the loose. Finally a black cop comes in and ask what the hell is going on and I get cut loose. Hey I get it, you see the worst of the city day in and day out. But not every black and brown face is a thief, criminal or sexual deviant. Many of us work, have families and provide. In fact, some of us want the same justice the white guys and woman get who are drunk on the weekends while the cops just laugh and put them in a cab home. Like the guy over the weekend who shat on himself and threw it at the police while in lockup. He made it to booking alive. Treat us the same. Now when you do catch the really bad ones, hey, you are authorized to use deadly force.

I shocked that the 60 Minutes Episode failed to mention that Bob Milan was the ASA who ACTUALLY TOOK the confessions from these defendants. They made it seem like he had nothing to do with the cases and that he was merely commenting on the whole situation. And after he did this, he became the First Assistant State's Attorney. Why didn't he speak up about these confessions that "haunted" him when he was 2nd in command of the SAO years before 60 Minutes came calling?
