Media Plays Catch-Up Again

If we were the media, we'd be embarrassed to even report this.

First Sneed:
  • Sneed has learned that the bell tolled at midnight Monday for top cops toiling in the city’s top shooting galleries and murder dens.

Translation: A massive police shake-up by Police Supt. Garry McCarthy went into effect late Monday when he made seven executive police moves.
That was reported 04 December at 8:12 PM.

The the Tribune:
  • As the Chicago Police Department tries to tamp down the city’s rise in homicides and shootings this year, Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced a shake-up in his command structure, moving seven commanders to different assignments.

The changes mean that McCarthy has replaced 19 of the city’s 23 district commanders – some because of retirement -- since he became superintendent in May 2011.
That was 05 December at 5:03 PM, twenty-one hours after Sneed.

Unfortunately, Sneed seems to have cribbed her column from our posting of 12:09 AM on 04 December, which was drawn from a comment at 7:46 PM on 03 December.

So our readers beat Sneed and the dead-tree media by over 24-hours on her "scoop." Congratulations readers.

Lets see if the media can catch up on this.
After hearing our fearless leader contend that chicago has the highest number of officers per capita of any major city in the U.S, I thought I would run the numbers.
Per the 2011 census, New York has 8,244,910 citizens while Chicago has 2,707,120. New York's police department is budgeted for 34450 but, due to a rise in hiring, had 36600 in 2011. They also have 4500 auxiliary officers and 5000 school safety agents for a total of 46100. Chicago is budgeted for 11500 but has, in reality somewhere from 8-9000. If you do the math, New York has 1 officer for every 179 citizens. Even if you only do the budgeted amount, it's 1 cop for 239 citizens. If Chicago was at full strength, we would have 1 cop for 235 citizens. In reality, we are looking at 1 cop for every 301-338 citizens. Not exactly the highest per capita police force.
all that info is available online and it took me a total of 2 minutes to do that. Why is it so hard for a reporter to do this and call the superintendent the liar that he is?

Putting a new face in 009 its not going to stop the shootings and/or homicides. You can put Jesse Jackson and things would still be like the wild wild west. The problem comes from the courts, judges that never really ever punish these criminals. Criminals are not afraid of jail, its too comfortable for them. You have judges like honorable Hooks 26/cal that always finds in favo of the criminal even when all has been done correctly. That what is coming to. Never real justice and criminal know thus, the criminal laughs at the police

That fact seems to have been lost on every major news outlet here. It's definitely news in Chitown, where Madison st. has been the midwest's version of the Mason-Dixon line with regard to Command staff placement since the CPD came into existence.

The mayor and the superintendent refuse to hire and deploy more sworn, armed officers to the streets and give them new, decent vehicles to patrol with. But it appears that Laurel and Hardy don't care and are going out of their ways to embarrass and cripple the Chicago Police Department in their efforts to "Serve and Protect" the
citizens of Chicago. Finish your shift safely and go home to your loved ones.

1:28am, don't forget NY also has a Port Authority Police, a real Transit police, Housing Police, and Park Police. Not off-duty police officers working their days off to fill in these positions. Then you have the different Federal Agencies working in NY because of terrorism threats. What people do not understand is that CPD is the only department working the city, and when you do the math like you did, even a blind man can see we need more manpower.

Not sure if Jim Jones will be made the commander. You better pray he doesn't. Regardless of race he is the worst "boss" I have ever come across. He keeps getting promoted beyond his abilities but no one minds because they just want to get rid of the guy. When he was made the tact Lt in 011, he took the #1 tac/gang teams (numbers wise) to number 8 in 3 months and then number 12 in 5 months. He tried to micromanage everything. Problem is you can't micromanage what you don't know. He has never been the police, hell he doesn't even know how to talk to the police. He knows nothing about motivating or taking care of the troops. He is the morale killer, and there isn't much of that left anyways. If they do promote this incompetent mush to commander it will just signify we truly are lost as a department.

Adding a few more po's might get you some time off, seniority and a better furlo, but as far as stopping crime, you are dreaming. Good example, a few days ago an establishment was having a private party and 4 or 5 people were shot. You could have 50,000 police in Chicago and those people still would have been shot
