Anyone Need a Gun?

  • The Thompson "Tommy gun" submachine gun may have been good enough for "The Untouchables," but it isn't of much use in modern-day crime fighting, so Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer would like to put the department's stock of the iconic firearms up for sale.

Of course, that would be only two Tommy guns, along with four Vietnam vintage M-16 rifles, that have been kept in the armory inventory for the department since the 1960s, when Tinley Police got them from the federal government as Army surplus.

Neubauer said he has no idea if they've been used in the decades since, and he's asked village officials to put them up for auction, where they might fetch more than $70,000 from collectors.

"There is no use for weapons like these in 2012 urban policing," Neubauer said.
Says you Chief.  We can name three south side districts that would welcome this firepower tomorrow.

O_o?

*Snicker!*
Sure chief...

Heh... No DOUBT there will be a gold star position opening up with T.P.P.D.

Sooner if not later...

He has to be blind and delusional if he can't cast his eyes about 10 miles northeast and see the flames...

Ya better get some spring kits for those "choppers" and have them on stand-by.

Same for those M-16's...

Everybody that's been paying attention knows the south suburbs have been getting shit on real hard because the toilet that IS the South Side of Chicago has been overflowing for over 30 years.

Remember when Harvey and others such were nice working class towns?

Nothing wrong with a Thompson or M-16.

What is Tinley Park upgrading to? AA12s? Barrett .50 sniper rifles?

Maybe Tinley Park knows something and is preparing a Southside SEAL Team 7.

A used M-16 w/ military markings go for about $10 K to $12 K .
Thomsons w/ Police markings easily fetch $50 to $75 K.
Current issue of Shotgun News shows a mint Sterling 9mm sub gun still in original packing for $27 K.
Of course only for sale or transfer to FFL Class III dealers.

Since NFA items are limited to LE in Illinois the market is limited. If they are in the ATF registry and fully transferrable they are worth some serious coin.

The key is whether these guns were registered with the feds before the list was closed to civilian-legal guns in the 80's. If these are civilian-legal, their value in almost any repairable condition is worth many times more than brand-new guns--it is likely he could replace these guns with police-only versions and still clear $50,000 or more.

to those saying the chief is an idiot, how many officers do you think tinley has that are trained on a tommy gun or an m-16? He is much better selling these and getting something modern

The Chief should be urine tested if he thinks those guns are worth $70,000! Unless they have some unique historical value, they are worth $8 to 10 thousand each.

Apparently Chief hasn't looked at some of the Apartment complexs in that Town. And that fine Expo Center is not exactly the Top Notch place they founding fathers of Tinley would have you believe.
Besides he should just look around at the South Suburbs, I am sure he will be long gone in a few years but the surrounding areas are going to the savages pretty quickly....

"There is no need for weapons like these in 2012 urban policing."

Yeah, look at Chicago. Sensitivity training will do it. That and CompStat.

That is what helps keep our morgue overflowing.

I am made uncomfortable by "administrators" publicly casting themselves onto the Altar Of Political Correctness.

There is "Mumbai," there is "nut in movie theater in full body armor shooting like crazy," there is "armed robbery."

Lots of situations to keep in mind. Good to have options when use of force escalates. This is why they were in the rack in the first place.

If you did not need them, thank God. Then strip and clean and oil and put back and smile. Bought and paid for a long time ago. Spring kits as someone mentioned here are a good idea.

As was said a long time ago, "One seldom needs a revolver, but when one needs it, one needs it very badly indeed."

What was that situation once -- Los Angeles? -- where the freaked-out police kept their heads down and ran like crazy into a gun store to borrow AR-15s against an active shooter, was it in heavy body armor?

...and of course these were NOT SIGHTED IN and bore not safe to fire unless you inspect -- maybe still Cosmo/heavy oil? Taking your life in your hands.

At least the ones you keep should be maintained and ready condition known and weapon zeroed for known range. Dept. should have a designated ARMORER.

Me, I would sleep better at night. Like seeing the "2013" tag on the fire extinguisher. No big deal unless you don't have it when you need it.

Think about it.

They had him on TV news tonight.

Said he was staying in the race for Jesse Jackass Jr.'s seat "...at this time..."

Why the Hell wouldn't he??

The idiot voters elected Jackass Jr., "The Absentee Congressman", knowing all the while that he was under investigation.

Secondly, who's his competition, convicted pedophile Mel Reynolds??

No use?

1. Everyone knows what a Thompson submachinegun is.

2. Imagine some street trash waving his stolen, poorly maintained "foty" around before coming face to face with a well-trained, determined police officer carrying a well-maintained, classic Thompson SMG with a 50 round drum.

3. Now imagine the moronic, lame stream "news" media reacting to that well-trained determined police officer cutting that trash to doll rags with the .45 ACP slugs from said well-maintained, classic Thompson SMG with 50 round drum.

At least a police spokesman wouldn't have to whine that the police officer was "outgunned."

If the Thompsons were registered under the NFA prior to May 19, 1986, then they could indeed be worth some serious coin outside of Illinois. If they're not, on the other hand, might as well just cut up the receivers and sell the rest off as parts. There's little to no market for unregistered vintage machine guns.

If the M-16A1s came from a government program, then they probably are still considered government property and would have to be returned to the Army.
