Ric Flair Captures Shooters
007 District:
- Englewood residents thought an episode of “Cops” was being filmed Thursday afternoon as a TV news crew shadowed police after a shooting and foot chase.
Englewood District Police Cmdr. Leo Schmitz was on a “ride-along” with a CBS news crew in an unmarked squad car when shots rang out near 65th and Sangamon about 4 p.m.
A man got out of his SUV and began frantically pointing down the block and yelling, “He’s shooting at me!” Schmitz said.
Moments later, another man bolted from a gangway. Schmitz and three other officers tailed the man into a nearby garage, where Schmitz, gun drawn, found him hiding behind a car. His fellow officers arrested the man without a struggle. Charges are pending against the man, who admitted being in a gang.
Police found a 9mm Baretta handgun in a backyard as they backtracked the man’s steps.
Nice job. And the resemblance to Ric Flair is amazing actually.

Wow. Great job. Hate to say this but it's just a matter of time before one of these Commanders get injured running around playing hero.
Nice job a work. Got shooter, gun and all safe.
You gotta ask, though -- did complainant stick around to elaborate or uh uh right quick with --
* jacked SUV
* load of dope/hair extensions/ tooth whiteners
* person duct-taped in back
* any/all combination of above
It's Reality TV!
Now let's hope the poor schlubs that got stuck processing this offender crossed all the T's and dotted all the I's.
Crime scene(s) processed accordingly. Supps done by any officer assigned to the job.
Evidence such as the ["He's shooting at me!"] spent casings recovered.
Gun processed by ET (if one could be found, haha!) for prints.
Bagged the hands of "the man, who admitted being in a gang" (NOT a crime in and of itself, by the way) for GSR testing.
Alleged victim and any/all witnesses brought in for statements.
Etcetera, etcetera...
I can't wait to see what this dude will eventually be charged with; I can see this one going south with a quickness when the CBS news crew (who probably filmed the whole thing) gets subpeonaed by the defense attorney for both their testimony and their videotaped footage of the incident. Stranger things have happened and we all know that the media is NOT our friend.
Just food for thought.
He HATES the ric flair references. But he's a good fella
At least he didn't say, "Gotta run" and go the other way.
Good job!!
nice leo
At least he ran TO the shots fired....
" a CBS news crew in an unmarked squad car "
WTF is the news media doing in a CPD vehicle? the Media is not our friend, in fact they have proven many times over that they are our enemy. 'Ric Flair' or not there is no excuse for these non-trained, non-police personnel entering / riding in a CPD vehicle. Violation of proceedures.
im sure there will be alot of haters and negative comments here but I cant say a bad thing about leo while he has been commander of 007. Ive been in 007 for 12 years and in 004 for the 4 years before that. Ive got to say that leo is one of the best bosses I have worked for. Yes, many people here(which isnt saying much) have negative things to say about him but for us he has always had our back, has always taken our side and has always given credit and supported his guys here. I dont know if it was different elsewhere but I cant attest to that. Since he has been in 007 I see him as a nice person, good boss and good police officer. Definitely better than the past 4 bosses that have been commander here in the past. im also glad to see in this story he gave credit to the people who were actually out working... its a nice gesture towards them.. unlike other people who make sure after they do something they have someone put them in for the lambert tree...... just sayin
Leo is a decent guy and a real Cop at heart. He sincerely cares for his people, unlike McMouth.
Leo IS a great guy. I've worked for him in the past and would enjoy working for him again in 007. He's a leader and he still enjoys the job. I wish more bosses were like him.
" my commander can beat up your commander"
Let's put all the commanders in a steel cage match and have a battle royale.
You know Cmdr Jarmusz is going to go out now and get TWO guns.
I met Commander Leo at the 8th district on the community side.A great guy and a stand up fella.Good luck Leo and stay healthy.
Keep this up and people are going to start saying that Rick Flair resembles Leo Schmitz.
To 12/8 @ 413am.. You dont know Leo obviously
007 dist Tact LT was in the office playing headbanz at the time.
The arrest report begings with: This is an on-view code of silence arrest by 007 and co.
Anybody who bashes this incident should go to HELL. Leo is Leo...but how many other police officers', yet alone Commanders are out there inthe thick of it....even with a News Crew.
Great work Leo!!
MS
Hes the real police
12:08 AM
Shut the fuck up, J-Fled.
So you condone cowardice, eh? Go pet your pussies and disappear. Be you a patrol officer or the superintendent, we respond to hazardous calls to back up the troops. It's what we do.
I "hate to say this but" you disgust me.
ANOTHER department award to hang on his shirt.
We should bet on when his uniform shirt will tear from all the "glory boy" medals on it
Leo is a great leader and would make a great Supt! He will have our backs.
Just watch because Leo is a boss he will get the Sup.'s Award of Valor when any other cop would get an Honorable mention at best. It's happened many times. Didn't our First Deputy get all kinds of awards for a very routine incident that street cops encounter daily?
I heard he likes the Rick Flair stuff.
Good to see he is still a patrolman with a gold star, rare thing these days.
I do hear he has pushed the troops pretty hard when he has ran teams, sometimes that leads to bad judgement. These bosses need to figure out a way to show at the compstat meetings that there are other ways to show good work is being done other than just cb totals. How about convictions on felonious cases? There is a number to throw out there.
Say Leo's dramatic. Say he's over the top. But know that he BELIEVES.
He carries a couple of phones, always, always, listens to multiple radio bands, and stays in shape. This latest incident doesn't surprise me at all.
Nice job, Leo.
Bottom line, LEO is a POLICEMAN. Never backs down or runs from a fight! He has always been this way. All the HATERS listen to rumors and don't know the MAN. He always has our backs on the street, and in the station when some shithead starts complaining. Nice job Commander!
Leo has always been a good boss. He takes care of his people. He loves the job. The department needs more bosses like leo. Sure maybe he does look a little like Ric Flair but who cares he knows the job, he enjoys doing it and he is a stand up guy who watches out for his people. Good job Leo. Worked with him when he was a PO and he has always been a stand up guy. He treats his people like grown-ups and doesn't walk around like he is better then people. He is approachable and he will listen to his people. Good job again Leo. Keep up the good fight.
Don't kid yourself. Leo has always been "All about Leo" and has even said so. He gave the names of the officers who arrested this P.O.S. so that when the false arrest Federal lawsuit comes in, he made it known that he did not arrest the P.O.S. that it was these three officers. Be very wary of Leo, he will throw you under the bus to further himself.
Is it just me or is HQ trying to "leak" or "feed" some of this stuff to the media?
You've got this Ric Flair story and you had all the hoopla surrounding Joe Gorman taking over 009....
You don't think McFailure is getting desperate and trying to show how hard he's trying do you???
Superintendant Leo Schmitz?
We'll drop the Rick Flair moniker and go with Leo the Lionhearted...I worked for him as a Sgt. He is a good boss. He actuallt worked crime scenes with you, and just didnt show up to be the HMFIC.
Nice collar.....
wooooooooooo "To be the man, ya gotta beat the man"
this guy is so full of him self..ra ra ra...
ya great boss compare to the pass 7 dst bosses..
NP- who cares! In six months from now, it will be forgotten and you will be a memory. The county will have this pos back on the streets by the new year. And if not, there's another pos standing in line to take that one's place. How many times will CBS air the tape of cops chasing this a-hole with a gun? As many times as they played the tape of that drunk abbate in the bar? Yeah right. Anyone who whores themselves out to these biased, unprofessional, ratings slaves that call themselves reporters should be ashamed.
leo is out for himself he will throw you under the bus my friend so watch out is all i can say
Nice work Commander.
I hope leo can catch the jagoff(s)who tagged up pops beef, the bike shop, auto shop and home owners garage with "Seko" big letters in gold paint. Wtf take a ride down the east alley of kedzie 103 to 104. We have to work hard to catch this jag. Wtf
Leo is awesome!
Love or hate him, he is leading by example. This is the true definition of leadership. If you think about it officers from 7 really don't come on here to complain about him. Is he a self promoter? Yes, but who cares, as long as he is getting the job done and is taking care of his troops.
Give me a break, he's married to the daughter of a jewish real estate mogul, he's got more outside assistance that ANY other commander in the city, he takes mc-stupid to bears games and hockey games.

Ya' know, it starts to sound like sour grapes when the bosses get bashed for sitting in offices doing nothing, for not going to the shooting etc., then when one does a nice piece of police work while out on the street they get bashed again. When you look completely unreasonable then your legitimate concerns get ditched right along with the rest.
Would the Commanders of 014 or 015done this?
Can't wait till the defense attorney asked the CBS crew if they saw the bad guy with a gun. If they saw him throw a gun and the if the gun that was recovered was the one they saw or did the police drop it there. Then we get a finding of No Probable Cause because we can't show possession of that particular weapon and the bad guy was just turning his life around, loved basketball and was getting paid "Obama bucks" to go back to school and study Computers.
Hey nice job.. maybe you can take Chris Kennedy and a few other few along on some OJT....be a first for some of them.
"Hate to say this but it's just a matter of time before one of these Commanders get injured running around playing hero".
Your an Idiot, real leaders lead from the front. Those office chair commanders make decisions without any idea how that decision could affect his/her officers. A PPO can get hurt, anyone who wears the Badge can get hurt.
You are an abberation as it applies to our profession.
General Hal Moore, Patton, Omar Bradley, General Shwartskopf, and all those great Chicago Police Commanders, lead from the front.
R u that stupid 408am,or just drunk, haven't u ever heard of a ride along fool. Just cause u don't like something doesn't mean its wrong a violation of procedure u idiot. Really think things through before u post please.
Leo is a good man to work for, especially when we had that bumbling hibbidy gibbidy racist moron tony the tiger before him. The only gun the tiger ever got was the one he used to pull out on females in the quiet room.
I worked for Leo for several year's and I have to say he's one of the better bosses on this job, when he was out sick fighting for his own life he heard that one of his officer's was involved in a shooting, Leo showed up regardless of how sick he felt, took care of the Officer and his Family, that's a class act, anyone who talks shit about Leo never worked for the man.
I've known Leo when he first came on the job. He's always been a working copper and fair with anyone that knew him.
Leo is a Policemen's, Policemen and he'll go the extra mile to help a fellow Officer but if your a dog ass and don't want to do your job, he won't and rightfully so.
He's got old school in him and you don't find much of that any longer.
"At least he didn't say, "Gotta run" and go the other way.
"Good job!!"
12/08/2012 02:30:00 AM
Absolutely. I'm just laughing, "And what was that SUV about."
World of trouble.
*
Enough said!
Nice to see that Richard is still doing good Police work... After lying and suing other Police to make some extra $
Still a user and a jagoff.
I was in the academy with Leo, 86-5. He kicked EVERYONES ass while sparring. red man etc. No one came close to putting him down.
Good man.
Retired 86-5
Remember over 14 yrs ago working days in 006. Retired now for a minute or two. Got a call of "man with a gun home invasion in progress at 7701 S. Wolcott." Was probably 30 mins after roll call. Was a couple blocks away and all others cars on jobs. Pulled up to house and elderly woman standing in front screaming that that man has a gun and he's in my house. On way in another marked pulls up and it's the Watch Comm- Capt. Bobby Burns AKA WACKO which is a term of respect for him. Entering the home I told him let me go first you're retiring in 2 weeks. He pushed me aside and said fuck you you got too many children. Bad guy caught. Threw a big RETIREMENT PARTY for Bobby Burns. Some bosses are really GREAT. THANX BOB! TC
Would anyone in the know expect anything less?
Nothing but another routine gun or dope arrest in the "HOOD".
Hope the news crew also experienced the "stench" and the war zone ambiance in the "Hood" with the vast number of empty lots and boarded up apartment buildings.
Your detracters are envious of u Leo. You're ok in my book.
The current C/O of 019 is "Iron Mike Ryan" due to the real C/O being on furlough or something of the sort. U really think Leo can win the steel cage match against "Iron Mike?"
He's the real thing
Leo = big juice (spouse) & big self-promoter and IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. What he did is something any working ghetto cop has experienced countless times. On view shots fired, on view carjackings, on view armed robberies, on view agg batts with guns and knives and even an on view homicide back when I worked Fillmore. The only difference between Leo and myself and every other blue shirt is that Leo is cut from the Clout Cloth and he has perfected shameless self promotion to an art form. Give me a ton of bullshit medals and a few merit promotions because of who I'm married to and I'll also convince you that I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now don't get me wrong, Leo's always liked to work, but he's no better than 95% of the people I've worked with in fast districts the last 26 years. You gel heads need to let go of Leo's nutsack.
Leo is a goodguy and he takes the tic flair ribbing he is about the press but has your back old school unlike many of the cowards at the top!
Leo is all about Leo. To you Dick smacks that say Leo is a great guy and a great boss go back to your cubicle in the commanders office or caps office. Leo is a lying, back stabbing arrogant clouted boss. All day and night this guy is on the air babbling his bullshit. Shit it must be nice to be able to run around and chase bad guys and not have to worry about CR#'s, personal concerns or behavioral intervention. So go ahead pickle smootchers and follow Leo into the battle in the ghetto where it doesn't matter, because take a wild guess who will be thrown under the bus I a sure you it won't be Leo. P.s. if Leo is the type of boss you want to work for go right ahead and bring your asschaps you fucking sheep.
"Baretta"? Isn't it Beretta? Just saying, doesn't anyone proof these stories before they go out?
In order to be the man, you got to beat the man. Woooooo !
Hey Leo, I love you man !
Yes, good job Leo. But he did what cops do in this city do every day. And the fact that he chose himself for the media ride along is kind of funny. I have know Leo for a long time, he is a hard working guy. Tries to take care of his troops when he can. But those who know Leo know that his number one priority is himself, he believes that he deserved all his merit promotions and that he should be the Superintendant soon. And he loves face time with the media, loves to take credit for things he didn't do. He is good with the rah rah speeches but when he moves on, all the things he said will disappear with him. He is a shameless self promoter with gift of BS. Overall, not the worst boss you could have. Certainly a working guy, but in over his head. He has also left a trail of stripped officers where ever he has been. Those that bought into his rah rah BS and got jammed up for it.
Nice job. Hopefully all the footage is positive. He's a rare boss, actually likes to work and isn't looking to cover his own ass all the time. What drives him, some say ego, I say he's a worker to the bone. Dogs always bark, attack dogs bite!
Whine all you want but he leads by example, very few bosses have his skill set or even care enough.
How about his wife? The female LT @ midway... He goes to work in 007 for Quiet time.
Stop I have worked for Leo and Leo is all about Leo. If he can use you to help himself he will. Wake up 007 you will see soon enough how much he lies and is a used car salesman. You haven't worked for him long enough to see his true colors like I have!
Not on CPD, but I read through the comments. Leo seems like he's a good guy for a boss and deserves some slack. Woooohooo!

BINGO. Ask the guys from his area team when he was in 011 what Ric Flair is capable of when it comes time to "back his troops".
I would much rather have Supt. Ric Flair than the McMush we have now.
Hey didn't you idiots talk shit when Jody turned away from gunfire? Everyone's has and is entitled to their opinions BUT the man did his job and regardless of his rank, he did the job, they way most bosses wouldn't. Ya just live to bitch about everything don't you?

Ellen got a CR number on her entire tact team when she worked tact in 024 because she lost her hat and blamed someone on the team. She made a big case out of it, had an ET come in and dust the lockers for prints etc.
Then she made detective and was sent to A1. She stayed there her entire detective career. She made Sgt. and was sent to 002. She ran out of the room crying when she got the news.
That CR shit on her whole tact team brick lasted quite a while.
Leo is a great guy, great friend and a great LE officer.
I might not be a copper but at 66 I know the real
McCoy from the BS folks. If the CPD had more
Leo's it would be a better department. The city of
Chicago is blessed to have Leo on the force. And for
those who don't get it then you lose..
MTS
leo is my district commander and i have seen more than a few commanders in my years in 007. leo headlines the list of commanders that worked in 007 and A.C. bottoms out that list by far. i don't know much of leo's past but i can only say good things about what i know and have experienced first hand with him being in 007. he is very motivated still and is a great leader to us in 007. everyone can't help but bash him(like every boss) but he should get recognition. i just can't stand the political side of him and every other boss but that is what they have to do to be in the higher positions. i would like to see him as our next supe because he absolutely deserves it especially compared to what candidates are out there. leo does back us and does lead by example like a true leader should do. we will miss him as a commander but we know he's being groomed for a better spot already.

Well, if one does not engage in at least some shameless self-promotion on this job and instead waits to be noticed by the powers that be one will be in for a long wait and a lifetime as a 9161, Patrolman for Life.
How do I know? A career as a 9161, that's how.
ric flair was ric a merit all the way

You mean like the rest of us? Good, then they can go down to the Medical Section and sit through that shit and have their medical bills go to a collection agency like happened to me several times.
Good job!
In corporate America and in the military, it is required that each member promotes himself. CPD is in the dark ages. The key to success is to build a resume and self promote your interest in any organization. This is why we are so screwed up.
Commander you are the real Police and I would follow you into battle Sir!
Afghan Vet
leo knows everything just ask him..
Leo is good people.
Nothing like watching the news doing a bs ridealong and hearing gunfire....love the video.
