State Trooper Killed in Wreck

  • An Illinois state trooper awarded a lifesaving medal as a cadet was killed in a fiery collision between his patrol car and a semi on Interstate 294 south of Willow Road, authorities said.

James Sauter, 28, was on duty in his squad car when it was struck by a semi shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, state police said. Both vehicles burst into flames and Sauter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sauter was stopped on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 294 when the semi struck him from behind...
Godspeed Trooper.

Sympathy and prayers only in this thread please. Arrangements will be posted when we get them.

Thoughts and prayers to the officer's family and friends.

Everyone's worst nightmare -- all the reflective vests and flashing lights in the world, yet still...

Thoughts and prayers also to family and friends of an IDOT Minuteman, killed while helping others back in 1971-72.

He had helped me out of a bad spot on the expressway. I happened to notice his name on his hard hat on the seat.

About a month later -- warm day -- I was eating lunch, I opened the newspaper, and there was the story. Really knocked me down.

Forty years ago, seems like yesterday -- and rest assured it is remembered long after the busy person who helped you forgot about it himself...

God bless all here. Stay safe.

Some of us are here to learn to love.

Some of us are here to teach those who are here to learn to love.

We are all here for just a little while.

Everything we can do here is just a means to this end, to learn to love.

Anything we do, while we are here, that isn't about learning to love is of no more value than tears in rain.

The greatest thing we ever learn, is just to love, and, if we're really lucky, be loved in return.

"And the Greatest of these is Love."

I have been a Police Officer for over 37 years and have been driving Big Rigs for over 40 years and it has been a great second career for me, however I must say that there are far too too many IDIOTS drving big trucks out on the roads, THis Trooper Sauter did not have to die like this, and I certainly hope that this driver realizes how many lifes have been effected by his actions, This goes to show you that driving in this City, and State is out of control, whatever the case may by, Jim Sauter will never be around to enjoy his life, and to share it with his wife and family!. May he rest in peace and may the Angels up in heaven take care of him and his family, and his felow ISP Family!!

I got stopped out near Galena for speeding. (I was) ISP found out I was CPD and gave me a stern lecture and politely shiwed me profesional courtesy. I always showed those guy the utmost of respect. They have a very dangerous job, working a foot or two from speeding traffic and many drivers altered, sleep driving, incompetent or who knows.

I have lost count of the ISP officers killed or hurt on the interstates around here. I dealt with them all the time, working in A3 as i did. Always rushed to back them up on the rare time they asked.

It's tough to lose one of your own like that. Anything I can do, I do. We are all in this together.

That said, as a former trucker and current CPD,I get sick to my stomach as I remember back to the days of Jimmy Carter and trucking deregulation. Trust me, sharing the roads and streets with gypsy truckers,it was a lot different after deregulation. All of a sudden, truckers had no knowledge of truck routes, viaduct heights, etc. All this so we can save a quarter on our widgets and gadgets,or, even worse, shippers can make a few extra bucks. I remember many years back when the ISP took over the expressways from CPD, we had a little problem with them at first, they didn't like our driving habits, but after awhile of backing them up on the highways and a few of them getting out with us socially we all bonded, when I was working in Special Operations north a trooper was shot on the Kennedy at California, the first car on scene was tow older cops who pulled the trooper to safety and drove him to the hospital, he lived and we forged strong relations, Everytime I'm out on the roads and see a trooper stopping someone I always check to see if they are OK, even off duty, Troopers you guys and gals Rock, Sorry for your loss !!
