State Trooper Killed in Wreck
- An Illinois state trooper awarded a lifesaving medal as a cadet was killed in a fiery collision between his patrol car and a semi on Interstate 294 south of Willow Road, authorities said.
James Sauter, 28, was on duty in his squad car when it was struck by a semi shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, state police said. Both vehicles burst into flames and Sauter was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sauter was stopped on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 294 when the semi struck him from behind...

May God have mercy on us all. Rest in peace brother. Trooper job is not easy!
Thoughts and prayers to the officer's family and friends.
Everyone's worst nightmare -- all the reflective vests and flashing lights in the world, yet still...
Thoughts and prayers also to family and friends of an IDOT Minuteman, killed while helping others back in 1971-72.
He had helped me out of a bad spot on the expressway. I happened to notice his name on his hard hat on the seat.
About a month later -- warm day -- I was eating lunch, I opened the newspaper, and there was the story. Really knocked me down.
Forty years ago, seems like yesterday -- and rest assured it is remembered long after the busy person who helped you forgot about it himself...
God bless all here. Stay safe.
RIP Trooper Sauter. My deepest Sympathies to his family and fellow Troopers of ISP.
On behalf of all my C.P.D. Bros I wish express our collective sadness for the loss of a GOOD MAN, who lost his life protecting another. Our I.S.P. will be in our thoughts and prayers on this weekend in which another brave, kind man DIED so others may LIVE.
Rest In peace brother.
Seeing all those CPD squad cars with their lights flashing at the Medical Examiners Office brought tears to my eyes. Thank you CPD.
RIP Trooper Sauter
Drove by this sight this afternoon, the scorched wall and road brought a tear to my eye. Godspeed brother

God Bless Him and may he rest in peace.
Some of us are here to learn to love.
Some of us are here to teach those who are here to learn to love.
We are all here for just a little while.
Everything we can do here is just a means to this end, to learn to love.
Anything we do, while we are here, that isn't about learning to love is of no more value than tears in rain.
The greatest thing we ever learn, is just to love, and, if we're really lucky, be loved in return.
"And the Greatest of these is Love."
RIP JS, you wont be forgotten! I knew him personally and he always wanted to work with the ISP. A great guy who was the perfect fit to be a trooper!

019th Dist. 3rd watch
My heart is heavy and tears shed from my eyes as I read this news story.
RIP Trooper
Suited up for a shift with no idea it would be his last. Never had a chance, one minute working a disabled and next killed.
RIP Troop, your service and sacrifice are appreciated. You are mourned by some of us that never had the pleasure of meeting you.
Related to one of our own (Area Central Detective Division) Rest in peace my brother and prayers to the family.
may he RIP
As a taxi driver travelling 294 as much as the troopers do I see so many times they are helping one of us out to keep us from the same tragedy. Everytime they stop on the shoulder they are in dangers way. Whether to issue a citation or render assistance, thankyou for keeping the highways safe so we can make it home. RIP
Thoughts and prayers for the Troopers family. Lets not forget the semi driver and his family. Pray for justice in the outcome. Hats off to the ISP for investigating before assuming blame.
Watch over us brother. Godspeed.

I'm truly sorry to hear of the loss of your friend and colleague. My thoughts and prayers are with you and of course for him, his family and friends. Your last sentence is one that has gone through my head a thousand times over the years after the loss of my friend and colleague to a drunk driver back in the seventies- he wasn't an Officer btw. Still, it's so hard to accept the sudden senseless loss of the really special ones. Stay safe and stay strong
RIP Trooper, you were called home while doing God's work. You will be missed, may God bless your family.
God bless from a brother in blue.RIP my friend.
God bless you trooper! My thoughts and prayers are with your family. RIP HERO!
I have been a Police Officer for over 37 years and have been driving Big Rigs for over 40 years and it has been a great second career for me, however I must say that there are far too too many IDIOTS drving big trucks out on the roads, THis Trooper Sauter did not have to die like this, and I certainly hope that this driver realizes how many lifes have been effected by his actions, This goes to show you that driving in this City, and State is out of control, whatever the case may by, Jim Sauter will never be around to enjoy his life, and to share it with his wife and family!. May he rest in peace and may the Angels up in heaven take care of him and his family, and his felow ISP Family!!
Rest in Peace Trooper Sauter. May God's perpetual light shine upon you. My deepest condolences to Trooper Sauter's family, colleagues and friends.
Please remember those who worked so hard to attempt to rescue and recover our brother and do so with Grace,Dignity and Professionalism. You never recover fully, although you won't admit it.
RIP TROOP, Prayers for you and your family, too young.I've been friends w/ISP guy's for years RIP Brother.RET.CPD.
To Trooper Sauters family,
I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm also very sorry for the loss to the Illinois State Police family. Trooper Sauters death is a tragic reminder selfless sacrifices that Police Officers and their families make on a daily basis to ensure the public safety. Tragically it will be probably overshadowed by some other event deemed more news worthy but in our minds and lives it will be a day of mourning. Godspeed Trooper Sauter.

Hat's off to the Harrison St. Rangers ! Got word from ISP, you did a great job at CCME ! Greatly appreciated !

I got stopped out near Galena for speeding. (I was) ISP found out I was CPD and gave me a stern lecture and politely shiwed me profesional courtesy. I always showed those guy the utmost of respect. They have a very dangerous job, working a foot or two from speeding traffic and many drivers altered, sleep driving, incompetent or who knows.
I have lost count of the ISP officers killed or hurt on the interstates around here. I dealt with them all the time, working in A3 as i did. Always rushed to back them up on the rare time they asked.
It's tough to lose one of your own like that. Anything I can do, I do. We are all in this together.
RIP Trooper. Your watch has ended. You served with Honor, Valor, and Courage. May you be received by our Lord at the gates of Heaven.
CPD
You were too young to leave us. Rest in peace, my brother. Wait for us.

Prayers and condolences to his family and the ISP.
Thank you brothers and sisters in blue for all you've done for our fallen brother. GOD bless all of you and keep you safe. -ISP Sgt
My prayers to the Sauter family and all of the ISP,at this time of tragic loss. That said, as a former trucker and current CPD,I get sick to my stomach as I remember back to the days of Jimmy Carter and trucking deregulation. Trust me, sharing the roads and streets with gypsy truckers,it was a lot different after deregulation. All of a sudden, truckers had no knowledge of truck routes, viaduct heights, etc. All this so we can save a quarter on our widgets and gadgets,or, even worse, shippers can make a few extra bucks. Democrats, same as Republicans !! R.I.P. Brother !
I sure hope they check that drivers cell phone record....I see way too much distracted driving from these goofs lately and their screwups usually don't end well. Need a strict federal law for CDL's on this. RIP Trooper
Rest In Peace officer. Sad Easter for this family. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Citizen Gigi:
Another horrible loss of life due to ignorant big rig drivers. God bless his family and the CPD.
my deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the trooper and his family and friends. was this trooper ever working I-55? i thought i may have met him before.
RIP Trooper Sauter. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this tragic time. :(
May you rest in the arms of the Lord and may your family find comfort in the fact that you are in a better place.
This fallen one now rides with St. Michael protecting all in blue.

Jim's patrol before going to Air Ops was Zone 5 Team 19 on I-355 evenings from 3-11. He would occasionally drift to I-55 near I-355. You might have met him. I was one of his teammates on that team. He was a great guy. I miss him.

Thanks to all the CPD officers that assisted Tpr. Sauter and the ISP on 03/28/13.

God Speed trooper.....cpd
I remember many years back when the ISP took over the expressways from CPD, we had a little problem with them at first, they didn't like our driving habits, but after awhile of backing them up on the highways and a few of them getting out with us socially we all bonded, when I was working in Special Operations north a trooper was shot on the Kennedy at California, the first car on scene was tow older cops who pulled the trooper to safety and drove him to the hospital, he lived and we forged strong relations, Everytime I'm out on the roads and see a trooper stopping someone I always check to see if they are OK, even off duty, Troopers you guys and gals Rock, Sorry for your loss !!
God Speed Trooper,
Chicago SWAT.
