Protestors Ticketed

  • A rally to protest school closings led by the Chicago Teachers Union at Daley Plaza in the Loop this afternoon included a march to City Hall and planned civil disobedience during a sit-in.

The official police crowd estimate was 700 to 900, according to the department’s News Affairs office, while a city official on the scene estimated the crowd as up to 2,000.

[...] Police soon began detaining protesters, leading more than 50 people away one by one to a holding area outside a building just south of Washington Street. Those in the holding area stood with their hands behind their backs chanting, "Hey, hey, ho, ho, Rahm Emanuel's got to go."

In all, 127 people were briefly detained and ticketed, said Chicago Police spokesman [...].
Let's see if there's a follow-up on how many of the 127 pay their scheduled fines.

On a news clip, they each handed their tickets over to a attorney from the teachers union.

Looks like a motion to fix?

Or will the union pony up and pay the fines?

    Really SCC?
The most passive display of civil disobedience the CPD has probably ever seen. The people stood up when asked, placed their own hands behind their backs, and walked to the holding area. The problem here is, these people care and Will pay their fines. I give them credit, I will not have a civil disobedience charge on my record for this purpose, but they did. If they believe in the cause, god bless em! Ireland wasn't won back from the English without tension. Like it or not, this behavior NEEDS to happen to invoke change. They volunteered to be arrested, they knew what they were doing before they did it. Hell, some cops were smiling and laughing with a few "civil disobedient protesters." This wasn't NATO and I'm a teacher who got stuck marching next to the black bloc people today (and it was made clear to them by myself and a large group of people around me they were not welcome here and we intently ensured they did not f-up our message). The CTU and others today marched for a common purpose in which your readers mostly agree with, "Rahm is a rat bastard and is f-ing up a city which is not his and he doesn't belong to." Although there are some issues CTU and CPD do disagree on, we ARE marching because you can't. When it comes down to it, I can't see the CPD being used as a pawn in the CHICAGO MACHINE. Remember your oath. I am an oath keeper. "Both foreign and domestic". You know, something like that...

And why isnt this labeled "City Politics"

P.S. This is by no means a
personal attack, just business. Keep up the good work sir or ma am! Now, discuss amongst yourselves... this is the topic...I'm faclempt...

I for one am sick and tired of having my taxes being held hostage because of CTU. The protestors are claiming it is for the kids, they claim it is racist because the majority of the schools are black, they claim it is unsafe because of gangs.

Sorry, none of that is true. Tell it like it is CTU, it is about your jobs. Be honest for once, quit throwing the race card and its for the kids out. You are sounding like Daley and Emmanuel on the kids and like Jesse Jackson and the rest of the preachers when you claim race.

Tough, close the schools. They aren't being used to capacity. And stop paying parents to walk their kids to school, that is their job!

Rahm the Ho has got to go? So, what other Democrat does the machine have ready to run? This is what happens when the Union sells its soul to have single party politics.

Get used to him, CTU. You wanted Democrats for which you sold your political, economic and ethnic souls to have Democrats. And you got Democrats... that you cannot get rid of. No recourse, no options. No leverage. Brilliant! And you teach children how to think, too!

What did the CPS teachers (and asst. principals as they're in the CTU too! Did you know that? The reason is some APs - mostly in elem. school teach classes) really win with their stirke? The teachers got a 2% raise in 2012-13, followed by another 5% in raised spread over the next two years.

    They lost:

    - the perk of banking to 325 'unused sick/vacation' days to be cashed in for a lump sum payout at retitrement. And, those banked days were paid at the rate of pay they were receiving when they retired, not the rate of pay they earned each day.

    - the ability to use the total amount of the banked sick/vacation days to be used as a pension escalator.

Basically, if a teacher or administrator retired, they could take:
325 (banked sick/vaca days max payout)
X $400 (avg daily rate of pay based on the avg $72K teacher salary)
    = $130K

take the $130K and add the $360K (total of their last five years of salary)

    = $490K divided by 5 (last 5 salaried years)

    = $98K X. 75% (pension percentage after 34.5 years)

= $73,500 (annual pension amount to each teacher based on 325 banked sick days and $72K avg, CPS teacher salary)

    - 1000 teaching jobs due to closing 54 schools

    - probably will lose the right by some 'special need subject area' teachers to get a waiver and live outside of Chicago.

    - longer days off during the summer...due to the 2013-14 school years starting 2 weeks earlier and the 2012-2013 schol year was extended by three days into June, 2013 (which were already extended days off with pay). And, teachers were forced to lose (4) paid vacation days during the school year to make-up for days lost during the strike.

    - the war on not being evaluated

HEY, HEY, HA, HA, RAHM EMANUEL KICK YOUR ASSES!

It was the lunch lady who could only parrot what her union official had instructed her union official had instructed her to say, "it's for the children and for my job." Only the 2nd half was factual. Ma'ams and sirs, i am not a fan of the rahmster but it is past time to stop issuing salaries where there is no need. If you had domestic help that you had no need for would you continue to cut him/her a check each month? Would you continue to pay maintenance costs, mortgages, and taxes on a house you did not have a need for?

I won't even get into the blatant racism cut president karen lewis and several aldermen have spewed that has gone unchecked, however, it has led me to be a little more circumspect in my evaluation of who these protesters were. Coming from a family full of cut teachers and having been educated by the cps, i know that at least in one way teachers are like us. Some are fantastic dedicated naturals, some are dogs with no business on the job, and the balance fall somewhere in between. Who were those people out there yesterday? I have my suspicions.

This was a planned ticketing. When we were working it yesterday, we were told the ANOVs were pre printed from a list sent to the department of the people who were going to not listen. This was a completely staged event to promote a loosing cause. When the communities of the closing schools figure out it is their own fault for the mess of the system we will finally be able to talk about real solutions.

By the way, the union and Jesse jackson hollar racism. The school system is only 10% white for starters. No one was concerned with " neighborhood" schools when they started busing kids around town. No one complained when the kids who lived in Mt. Greenwood were not allowed into the agriculture HS there. The communist led teachers union and SEIU are only concerned with their own butts and the power that the union has. Jesse jackson? Well when he lived in Southh Shore, his kids were taken by limo to a public grade school at 31st just east of King Drive, a school sitting in a nice park area. He never complained about that!!He received special treatment from the Board of Education so he did nothave to send his kids to the local, gang infested, public school in South Shore. I worked in 021 at the time. I saw it every day.

All you anti Lewis poeple out there do not see the geninus in this plan, alllow me to enlighten you:

Rahm is butt hurt from the strike, we all know the city has money and won't spend it pensions or education-correctly- blame teachers and cops but not mommy and daddy-sorry, just mommy- then instead of having a method and a plan the CPS CEO enacts this huge change which threatens UNION members jobs which Karen Lewis is chared with defending (yes shitty teachers and shitty cops out there but not the majority who get screwed. So get off thet shit jo). Rahm end arounds union contract- Karen in her brilliance allies the CTU with reverends and community, cries racism-which is the only thing media hears- like the strategy or not it is a way to put rahm and the chicago machine against itself by using the very pawns of the corrupt politicians! Sit back and watch the show folks! Tell mikey to take some notes! I read a comment earlier that stays true- rahm isn't here for the long haul so just weather the storm. This racism accusation is a pretty dam good umbrella for now."

Some level of social responsibility does fall on the government but not the extent of the enabling culture we have now. When you look at it your way the police are held responsible for murdering thugs and crime rate. Teachers are responsible for test scores and college.

Bottom line is all city workers need to unite. Privatization is coming for us all charter schools, garbage, fire, pd... the reason rahm hasn't gotten to police and fire yet is because we are keeping him busy as you call us socialists. Marching in t he street is as Democratic as it gets.

    Or something to that effect?

Either right after he was elected or during the run-up to the teacher's strike...

We have no idea why no one is giving him a very nasty taste of his own medicine.

Rahm is an arrogant shit-ass with a broken filter.

Kind of like his "Catered to Constituents" who move and act according to the instinctive impulses relating to brain stem function only... Prefrontal Cortex on total bypass.

(Kindred spirits in that they're both the cause of much grief and aggravation to reasonable men...)

Rahm is wholly unable to compromise or even agree to disagree in order to move forward in mutual interest.

You have to wonder. Were the dinner table talks during the foundation years THAT fucked up?

From where the common-sense man stands...

    There is no integrity.

    No decency.

    No common courtesy.

Did this screeching, profane, hate-filled, bulge eyed creature not receive the soothing touch of a mother's hand in his formative years?

Was there not a father, grandfathers, uncles and other proper menfolk who by their example, were able to teach him the ways of gentle strength and some modicum of self restraint?

Funny... We see NOTHING in him that indicates the heart of a true protector and defender.

According to Rahm, such notions are quaint and archaic. He's in a dreadful hurry... To do "something."

What is it that has gone so horribly horribly wrong?

Or perhaps the painfully apparent animus was there all along? Just below the surface and moving with a will all it's own. Perhaps it was just blithely glossed over with the left-handedly pleasant banalities of suburbia?

"Oh... That's just his way of expressing himself."

It must be a vicious itch... The inability to tolerate being in one's skin... Whether said skin is natural born or "borrowed."

"Beside himself," doesn't begin to paint the picture.

One of the frequent flyers here occasionally drops a quote attributed to Nietzsche regarding his admonition to beware a man who has a deep, all consuming and malignant thirst to punish...

Something is wrong with the main actor here...

That "borrowed" human skin seems to be chafing and confining.

"Pacing back and forth like a tiger..." (Good one WISDN. Very appropriate.)

We'll add this... Pacing back and forth like a tiger driven mad with thirst, fever and blood-lust.

Frantically working that untrackable cell phone extracting tribute, granting and currying favors, trying to destroy lives insignificant in his eyes and moving people around like pieces on a chess board to suit his malignant and malformed whims.

Eh... Maybe it's just too many years of "seeing things" from behind the wheel of a Blue & White?

Just the musings of a "big, dumb, old, brutal, mean, insensitive, politically incorrect, angry that it isn't 1960 anymore" cop...

Yes; I'm sure there were many "gold stars" out THERE (not their) ticketing teachers so they could "keep their spots." If you're a cop it makes me wonder how we missed you in the elimination process ...

You my friend are a complete tool. You are actually going to criticize clerical errors on a blog. You must be a gold star and the statement hurt your feelings.

Your full of it ! A gold star, as any employee, must do what they are told to do if you want to keep your job. You as a police officer also must follow orders or you can, and should, lose your job. What the hell do you think this job is? Do you really think you are an independent contractor? Wise up and grow up.

No fool I am not an independent contractor and I understand I have to follow a direct order, but I can still tell the person that is giving me that order that he is totally wrong and treating them unlawfully and I do not have to worry about getting dumped from my political spot. So do not try and act like the gold stars are just following orders. They are selling there souls for the spot. If they actually believed in the department this department would not be so screwed up. If a gold star actually showed they have a set, they would have told the boss that was giving this silly order no I am not going to do that. We all know you can not get fired for this kind of bs. So do not try to sell the kool aid here. You are full of malarky. Go preach to the choir my friend, it is because of the ball less gold stars the department is so short handed and has such terrible equipment. Maybe you should grow a pair for once and do what is right for the masses and not just what benefits you and only you.

Right on the money. This is why so many people are not backing the CTU.

The enemy of our enemy is NOT our friend.

I will never support communists such as the CTU. Never.

Those people chanting, "Rahm has got to go" were against Rahm in the beginning. They want their own person in office so they can get everything they want, the community groups want to keep the free funds flowing and the CTU want more money and less work.

Karen Lewis and her community groups, have spread all kinds of lies to get Rahm out of office and have finally played the race card in public, somthing they have been doing in the black community since Rahm was elected.
