Defend Yourself

Here's some brilliant freaking idea coming out of a "police executive" group. Confronting an attacker leads to less casualties:
  • The speed and deadliness of recent high-profile shootings have prompted police departments to recommend fleeing, hiding or fighting in the event of a mass attack, instead of remaining passive and waiting for help.

    The shift represents a “sea change,” said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, which recently held a meeting in Washington to discuss shootings like those in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo

    The traditional advice to the public has been “don’t get involved, call 911,” Mr. Wexler said, adding, “There’s a recognition in these ‘active shooter’ situations that there may be a need for citizens to act in a way that perhaps they haven’t been trained for or equipped to deal with.”
This is just coming to national consciousness now, but police departments across the country, including Chicago, rewrote these policies years ago for active shooter scenarios when it was determined that a response, no matter how disorganized, disjointed or small, almost inevitably led to the shooter surrendering or suiciding himself.

The NRA has been advocating this for years and been roundly castigated for daring to say it. The issue isn't guns, it's people and the unwillingness to confront easily predictable and obvious signs of instability that lead to mass shootings. Columbine and Virginia Tech, the two most often cited examples, were both 100% preventable if the warning signs were recognized and acted upon. So was Newtown. So was Aurora. In fact, records unsealed late last week revealed a shocking fact:
  • A University of Colorado psychiatrist told campus police a month before the Aurora movie theater attack that James Holmes had homicidal thoughts and was a public danger, according to records unsealed Thursday.

    Lynne Fenton, a psychiatrist at the Denver campus, told police that Holmes had also “threatened and harassed her via email/text messages” in June 2012. He is standing trial for the July 20 shooting rampage that killed 12 and injured 70 during a midnight premiere of the latest Batman movie.

Colorado, which just passed some of the more draconian gun restrictions in the nation, based their anti-gun arguments on the theory that the Aurora Theater shooting could have happened anywhere and been perpetrated by anyone. But the fact is that the theater is the only one in a 20 minute radius with a specific "no guns" rule in effect and authorities were warned by a mental health professional a month in advance of the killer's threats and violent tendencies and they did nothing to stop him. Everything that could have been done, wasn't. And gun grabbers are using it to deprive everyone of the Right to self defense, a Right now condoned by police executives.

The need for citizens to act became obvious on 9/11.

Unfortunately it took three planeloads of people to die before anyone took action, and as you know, the fourth plane ended badly, too.

Nowadays fliers are perfectly willing to kick your ass if you start acting up on board an aircraft, as well they should be.

That same attitude is becoming necessary at school, on the street and in the workplace.

The "I don't want to get involved" attitude of the '70's has given us the public unrest of today.

These active shooter situations are not your traditional police involved shooting. They more closely resemble a military firefight. The offender is the enemy and he is attacking his objective. We are the relief force. You have to engage and maintain contact to disrupt the attack. We're not even well trained in our everyday duties, forget any training for a situation like this. Somebody wrote an order? BFD. It may be necessary to employ tactics that are completely foreign to policing such as bounding overwatch or suppressive fire. How many police officers in America encounter this situation each year? Ten, twenty, thirty? How many of us would elect to stay outside, set up a perimeter, and wait for SWAT? It's something we should be thinking about as we go through our day. It's undeniable though that the only way to save lives in one or these situations is to get in the fight and engage the offender.

“Stopping the killing” only occurs in slightly over half of “Rapid Mass Murder”© incidents. Significant, documented, verifiable, and repeatable research has identified what strategies and tactics work in stopping the killing. In summary, they are:

1. Citizens, mostly unarmed, perform two thirds of all “Rapid Mass Murder”© aborts.
2. In citizen aborts, initiation by a single citizen stops the killing eight out of ten times.
3. Law enforcement performs one third of all “Rapid Mass Murder”© aborts.
4. In law enforcement aborts, initiation by a single officer stops the killing seven out of 10 times."

The anti-gun advocates use the big headline stories to say that those events could have been prevented if no guns were available.

How about the media doing a story about how many lives were saved from death or severe beating by people who used guns to defend themselves??

Oh right . . . that would advocate gun ownership and advocate that people exercise their Second Amendment right.

Heaven forbid that we allegedly deny the civil rights of one homicidal nutcase when we can deny the second amendment rights of millions of law abiding citizens.

If this guy was bad enough for a mental health professional to contact the police about him he had to be one wacked out psycho and should never have been allowed access to a butter knife let alone firearms. If just one concealed carry firearm owner was in that theater there could very well have been a different outcome.

I think the Orgeon mall shooter is proof of your theory. In that situation, the shooter had an AR-15 just like the other mass shootings, but only a couple people actually got shot.

It turns out that an armed citizen pursued the shooter and although he didn't actually fire on the bad guy, he claims the shooter noticed that he had a firearm.

At that point the shooter fled to a back corridor and committed suicide, despite having several more full magazines...

Oh, where to begin? Stop blaming these mass shootings on SSRI's. Yes, it was a pills fault. Blame the pills. Maybe his shoes were too tight? Maybe he didn't like the color paint in his bedroom? The damn school was WARNED about about the aurora nut job but nobody did anything because they don't want to look politically incorrect or upset the delicate nature of the shooter. I call BS on all of this crap. Blame everyone but the party who did the deed, isn't that the way of this world? As for arming ourselves? We better arm ourselves. This whole 70's way of thinking which is "let it be" and "don't rock the boat" and all that other ignoring the elephant in the room BS didn't do so well now did it? Frankly, I'd rather see a room full of John Wayne's than a room full of Alan Alda's any day. And before I get blasted with everyone's internet searches of John Wayne's drinking and all the other stuff people will drag out, I mean the following: Give me a man who isn't afraid of anyone instead of a nervous, frightened, metrosexual man-boy. I think you know what I mean tho.

So, the police executives say we should "flee, hide, or fight". But do they now favor supporting citizens rights to carry the most effective means of defense, a firearm?

I thought not. I guess that future Illinois teachers, confronted with a psychotic mass killer in their classroom, will have nothing superior to the Newtown staff and faculty to resist: a piece of chalk.

The vast manority of police I know personally are either NRA/GOA 2bd ammendment supporters or at the very least they don't come across as gun grabbing Feinsteinites. Yet most of these political hack police chiefs and union heads constantly say how anti gun the police are. I understand where a goon like McStreetlights would be in the gun grabbing camp...to further his political career, or at least not piss off a potential future employer. But why don't I see more pro 2nd Am. statements from your unions? You guys are paying dues. Shouldn't they represent you better ? Or is my impression of the average beat cop way off ?

Now all we have to do is to "de-train" the current couple of generations so that half of them are not standing around taking cellphone videos. I swear to God, gunfight blew up on a crowded street in NYC, s__t ricocheting off concrete planters, bangbangbang and they are standing there holding that stupid plastic thing out like it's Baby's Birthday Video.

"The "I don't want to get involved" attitude of the '70's has given us the public unrest of today."

* Civil Rights Act of 1964

* urban rioting

* Hart-Celler Immigration "reform" (tore up quotas) 0f 1965

* more urban rioting

* Gun Control Act of 1968

etc. -- and here is where it suddenly became very important for everyone "not to get involved" -- not to see that the explosive wave of street crime was being carried out by nearly 100% black perpetrators.

"Don't get involved" = "play on liberal-induced guilt."

...and it went on and on until you see what we have today.

The idea of stopping mass shootings is quite naturally a bane to the new Mass Shooting Industry.

Seriously. Just saw a news item, more than 60 organizations are collecting money "for the Newtown shooting" and relatives are calling for a government body to be formed to oversee it all -- afraid they're not getting their cut.

The White House invited park shootee Hadiya Pendleton's 10-year-old brother to the White House Easter Egg Hunt -- and 20 people RSVPd. Were the taxpayers quietly made to pick up the air fare and hotel bills?

The whole affair was nothing more than a national gun-control conference anyway, with "Newtown parents" also in attendance. The Pendleton mother has now "reinvented" a foundation, web site for donations, etc.

It all comes out cookie-cutter identical -- one tug on the emotions, a competing tug back the other way...

"I'm going in."

Resolve. Courage. Skill.

...and don't forget Faith.

I don't like the general mental image of guys armored to the hilt, waiting crouched behind APCs until the shooting in there stops.

I think of Charles Whitman and the Texas Tower incident -- guy was 16 stories up with a 6.5mm Rem Mag (?) and he was an ex-Marine who could shoot.

The police went up there and put an end to it.

There it is.

Stay safe. God bless all here.
