FTO Class Monday

118 names on the list, but no idea how many may have called to confirm attendance.  We'll probably get a headcount sometime Monday.

Anyone know if they've been told they're staying or moving once they graduate?

Good luck ladies and gentlemen - it is about the most thankless job on the Department and has been abused so much by the people in charge, demanding so much yet granting so little.

I hear the class that just graduated did not go to a district bec there are not enough FTOs. Instead they are solo directing traffic on Mich Av. True?

Their slogan should be:

FTO: If it was a good spot, you wouldn't get it.

There's still time to back out!

If you go through the training, can you decide later that it's not for you?

Like all things from the Superintendent, I didn't bother to read it because it will be:

-factually incorrect

-legally incorrect

-a new strategy that will change next week

-quietly rescinded by the next AMFM

-incur the Mayor's wrath and be countermanded by his people

-some idiotic rant to further the political career he thinks he has

Listening to the Superintendent is like listening to the loud mouth drunk in a bar. You don't really pay attention to what he says. You just keep enough of an eye on him so he doesn't sucker punch you.

I am not kidding.

I was an Patrol Specialist, then FTO for over 10 years. I loved it and I can say I never passed a kid that I feel wasn't ready to take the next step.

The CPD has historically shit on Field Training and I can see the GMac Administration continues it to this day.

I truly feel sorry for these kids, and pray one of them doesn't get killed because of Rahm's & Garry's bullshit

Being an FTO should be a prerequisite for higher rank, especially exempt ranks. In order to lead police you should first learn how to be the police then teach others how to be the police. Most of the exempts I've known have had very comfortable (not on a watch in a district) careers and I can't think of a single one who was ever an FTO. Maybe there were, but very few if that.

Saddly, they fucked this up yet again, and more candidtaes are going to decline because of it.
Lots of guys who scored really well on the test, and who are workers in the field, are going to decline because by the time they get to pick a district (senority) their option to return to their district will have been taken by one of the more senior dogs. They should have made a smaller class, and given those who scored well the chance to return to their district, due to limited openings.
It will be like the FTO class 8 years ago, where, after they told the FTO's that they would likely not be returning to their districts, 1/2 the class quit the training.

The FTO job needs a pay bump of $15,000 for the added risks/aggravation. The reality of a quality officer that lives on the northside and works on the northside taking the job is nill. Why would someone battle the traffic to go south daily and then have to battle the traffic to go to court every other day?

The FTO job does not make sense!

Who would want to be an FTO for such little pay? I may be wrong, but I think it's only $1,500 more a year. That's absurd for the level of danger, repsonsibility, and limited districts to work in. If it were a good position they wouldn't have such a shortage in FTO's. I think more FTO's have resigned over the years than they have in the position now.

I had a great FTO. He taught me many things, gave good advice about police discretion, showed me how to make stops properly and taught me the value of staying current on stop and frisk laws which change all the time. He helped make my career the joy that it was and I use his valuable advice in many areas of my life. I guess I was lucky but most of my fellow recruits felt the same abt their FTO's.

It's unfortunate that majority of the canidates have to refuse because it is likely they will be railroaded after trainning and end spending more in gas money than the raise itself.

Spoke to a new guy in 006, out of the academy and on foot patrol in 006. They are fucking insane. And when they do work with an FTO it is three to a car. Except they can't put a recruit in a cage.

I was told something like the fto's are putting in two out of grade slips if they get two recruits. I can't imagine the City doing this but who knows. The recruit hasn't been around long enough to actually know what is going on.

Stay safe out there recruits, your safety and your partner's is all that matters. Fuck the savages.

I think he meant STP, the oil and gasoline treatment additive with the nice red and white decals. Mix some STP with oatmeal and pour it in the crankcase to stop the oil leaks. Worked for my 1962 Plymouth Valiant slant 6.

Why should FTO be a stepping stone for a higher rank? Is it so they have more experience listening to themselves talk?

I had good FTOs and know some good FTOs. I also know more than a few miserable idiots who think their shit doesn't stink and do it for the tiny bump in pay or guarantee of working a certain car or watch.

Just because you can teach, it doesn't mean you can lead. Just because you can lead, it doesn't mean you can teach. Just because you can lead a wet nosed recruit around all day, doesn't mean any copper should do the same.
