Off-Duty Shooting on West Side

  • An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and wounded a gunman after witnessing a shootout that left a bystander injured, authorities said.

The officer saw the exchange of gunfire near the intersection of West Jackson Boulevard and South Leavitt Street around 10:15 p.m., according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police. Investigators would later learn one of the bullets struck a man who happened to be nearby.

Four of the people involved in the shootout then jumped into a vehicle, and the off-duty officer began to follow it south on Leavitt, Camden said. Three blocks later, the suspects' vehicle became stopped in traffic at the intersection of South Oakley Street and West Van Buren Boulevard, where an Illinois State Police trooper was conducting a traffic stop, Camden said.

The Chicago police officer approached the vehicle and announced his office, Camden said.

"Two in the back seat are armed," Camden said, retelling the story hours later as he stood steps from where the car had been stopped in the Near West Side neighborhood. "One of the offenders in the back seat raises a .45 [caliber handgun] at the officer."

The officer opened fire, striking one of the occupants, Camden said. The vehicle sped away and the state trooper followed, Camden said.
Car crashes, three escape, wounded offender captured and a gun recovered.

No cops injured and apparently no innocent bystanders in this one. "Exchange of gunfire" meaning a bunch of fools shooting at each other. Nicely done.

So what's the chances of this jagoff who was shot in the neck giving up his friends? No talk, no painkillers.

BTW - this shooting pushed the total shot and killed/wounded number over 500 for the year.

Is it really normal to get in the car and chase the bad guys a second time after the gunfire? I mean, I'm impressed but I'd like our officers to keep breathing, too!

Agree 100%. Nice job, but, they dont care what we do on duty, let alone off. Let them kill themselves. You dont have a radio, vest or backup, think twice about acting off duty. Carry a gun to protect yourself and your family, call 911 for everything else.

Fucking politicians play with OPM (other people's money) sure you saved the tax payers money in exchange for giving these blood suckers more profits from the general public. How about standing up to them and fighting the bullshit bill they submitted. Try to put them in check. it will pop up again, and again, and again over the next 70 some years left on the contract. Oh well, Someone has to get paid. That's the system.

No, it's not normal. It's what cops do. If we were normal, we'd get normal jobs, with normal hours. ;-)

There is nothing normal about running towards the sound of gunfire or running into a burning building or facing a crazy bastard with a gun and trying to shoot him before he shoots you. Nothing normal about being married and divorced four times. Nothing normal about working every holiday for so many years that when you finally get enough seniority to get hoidays off you no longer care because the kids are grown. Nothing normal about going for a drive with a girlfriend and spotting the burglars and thieves and those looking for something to steal and guessing who likely is carrying a gun. Nothing normal about knowing which way to move to avoid obvious troublemakers while you have your right hand around the grip of your gun, just in case. And there is sure nothing normal about not being able to sleep unless your pistol is close at hand.

100% not true. ODPO onviews shooting and then follows car. Car gets stuck in traffic behind a state trooper ALREADY on a traffic stop a few blocks from where the original shooting occured. ODPO approaches offending car, bad guy does his thing, shooting starts, car takes off and trooper bails on his traffic stop and gives chase.

Nicely done? That ODPO should have called it in, followed discreetly and keeping the offending vehicle in view. No way would I walk up to a car full of armed assholes off duty, just not worth it. Poor choice of tactics that could have cost that ODPO his life.

Wrong. The public loves his plain-spoken updates. I hear people in restaurants talk about him all the time. When the tv is on in a coffee shop and there's a story about a shooting, they actually pay attention to him.
He knows how to say something succinctly, colorfully, and he is pushing OUR agenda, not the City's.
