Rahm Loves Him Some Foot Patrol

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said Thursday that a recent move to step up foot patrols in some of the most violence-prone neighborhoods is paying off. They said “Operation Impact,” an effort to saturate high-crime areas with rookie officers on foot patrol and veteran officers working on overtime and days off is making those areas safer.

CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports, although the mayor has statistics to back up his claims, some residents and business owners were skeptical that this was any more than a publicity stunt.

It was clearly a made-for-TV event on Thursday, as no newspaper or radio reporters were invited to join Emanuel, McCarthy and Gresham District Cmdr. Fred Waller as they walked down Langley Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood.
Levine has gone completely off the reservation. He actually found a bunch of residents who don't think the foot patrols have done anything and gave them air time:
  • The trio greeted a few homeowners, while a heavy deployment of police stood by, just in case, blocking traffic, and making sure that those watching – many skeptical of the mayor’s claims that crime was down – didn’t get in the way.

“I can’t say it’s done too much, from what I can see,” said one woman, who works in the area twice a week.

Chatham resident Fred Blair said, “They’ve been in the area. I don’t think the violence is going to stop no time soon.”

Chatham resident Val Hall said he believes more foot patrol officers in the neighborhood might help “at that particular time, but once they get to the next block, then they [gang members] come to this block.”
The stats say a lot of things after a long cold winter and an April that saw more rain than at any point in recorded history.

Anyone want to guess what they say on 30 June?

"...some residents and business owners were skeptical that this was any more than a publicity stunt."

A publicity stunt is a planned event designed to attract media attention to the promoters, the perpetrators, or their cause.

FLASHBACK ... 1981:

In an effort to demonstrate a commitment to making the (Cabrini-Green Housing) complex safer, then-Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne moved into a fourth-floor apartment with her husband in 1981. Backed by a number of police officers and a substantial personal bodyguard detail, she stayed for only three weeks. This incident, too, contributed to public perception of Cabrini–Green as the worst of the worst of public housing. As a security measure, the rear entryway of the unit Byrne stayed in was welded shut. This had the unforeseen impact of creating a fortification for gang members when Byrne left. Many other gangs copied this technique in other units.

Operation Impact?

More like Operation "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit" to me.

Coppers tend to know bullshit when they hear it and this is nothing more than pure, grade A bullshit.

An April rainstorm has more effect on crime than Rahmbo and McBoozer.

Did City Hall's favorite lapdog resident on Langley Avenue come out to praise the event and state he wished he thought of utilizing same.
For those that desire a name it is Terry Hillard who resides on Langley Avenue just down from Todd Stroger.

Better weather (not great weather) this weekend is proving that the shit weather of the last 10 weeks has been the cause of the "downturn"

When will the media do a story on how much VRI is costing a week?

Those gang bangers run around like rats in the night. No amount of police officers in the ghetto is going to stop them from doing what they want to do. It the police are on one corner, they will just go two streets down and do their biz.

this is a disaster waiting to happen.
he will put inexperienced officers on foot, by themselves in neighborhoods that even the most seasoned officers would think twice about going in even in daylight no back up no car. somebody will get killed you watch. there are a 1000 of those animals and he wants to put one guy in there?

Oh what a relief, the hand wringing has stopped at city hall! Just wait until the weather gets really going ,90's etc. These poor kids walking on those streets will find it to be intolerable to go to work every night and God forbid one or more aren't harmed in some way over the summer. It's a stupid idea that worked in another era.

If we're sitting at total of 98 dead plus another 421 shot and wounded now, by June 30 we should be looking at a minimun of 150 dead and 650+ shot and wounded. Pad the numbers a bit for seasonality and we're probably looking at 180+ dead and 700+ shot and wounded.

Yes, it's all Byrne's fault. Without her, those bad gang members NEVER would have thought of that. They also never would have thought to drop gallon jugs of urine on us from the roofs. Oh, and without her they never would have thought to hide their guns and dope in hollowed out cinderblock, either.
Give me a break.
