CPD Fire Rescue

  • A Chicago cop who was a block away when he heard a call about a fire in a three-story apartment building in Lawndale rushed over and helped several people get out safely Saturday morning.

Ogden District Officer Edward Leighton got to the building in the 1900 block of South Drake Avenue, kicked down the door of the unoccupied first-floor apartment, then went on to the second floor, where he knocked in the door and found a mother helping her 8-year-old son with his homework.

Leighton said Zabrina Washington, 33, told him she’d seen smoke but didn’t realize the fire was coming from her building.

After escorting Washington, her six children, their five dogs and their cat outside to safety, Leighton went back in and up to the third-floor apartment, where he kicked in the door and, finding himself faced with a wall of smoke, ran back downstairs and tried but couldn’t get in through the back of the building.

He saw a 54-year-old woman in the third-floor window, had her keep her head out the window in the fresh air and talked with her to keep her calm until firefighters arrived and, using a rescue ladder, brought her down safely and gave her oxygen.

A very good job by the Officer.

Yes... We can use all the positive press we can get.

Actually... If a fractional percentage of the good and blessed things that Policemen do in this thankless, ungracious, wholly forsaken By God city, were to ever gain media exposure, there would be no room for the political and media whores to advance their hateful anti-Police/anti-taxpayer agenda.

I'll start with a tip of the chapeau for Officer Leighton. Nice work, son.

Now, if I may, allow me to make a few inquiries and observations regarding other facets of this story.

6 kids? At just 33? She must have a great job and work lots of overtime to provide for that brood.

No inquiry by the media as to the whereabouts of the children's father? I wonder where he was at for this near catastrophe. < snicker! >

5 dogs? Can I assume they're of the American Pitbull Terrier breed? Them are decent sized dogs that eat a lot. Wonder what it costs to feed them all, not to mention license and inoculate them year to year.

Section 8 apartment? How many bedrooms in that place? What's the rule on number of tenants-to-bedroom ratio? What about that pack of canines? They're allowed also? Seems a tad unsanitary.

Kids doing homework early on a Saturday morning? NEVER. Especially in Lawndale. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightening while holding the winning Powerball ticket.

Working smoke detectors in the joint? Guess not since mama thought the smoke was coming from elsewhere.

Time to add a 22nd category to the Pulitzer Prize and award it for best in the "Ghetto Bullshit" class.

C'mon, media whores! Ask some of these questions. If anything, we'd get some comedic relief in the answers.

Give the PO a life saving award, and great job.

I only have one question, a single mom, six children, FIVE DOGS, and one cat? Wow, I wonder how a single mom has time to take care of all the kids and dogs, not to mention one cat.

An interesting follow-up story on Ch 7 indicates that as a 4 year old child, Officer Leighton himself was rescued from a burning building by Chicago Police responding to the scene.
Apparently God watched over you brother so you were able to do HIS work later in life.
Nice job, THANK YOU.

Saturday 11 May

4 personal vehicles were broken into at VRI South last night!

The vehicles were parked on the east side of Racine.
The shit-heads used a slim jim.

One officer had his wallet and motorcycle keys stolen.
(I know.. shame on him)

There have been well over a dozen cars broken into so far.
SO the question is how THE FUCK do we control shootings in the "box" when we can not even stop the animals from breaking into our cars with 4 officers providing lot security?

Fuck this garbage pit city.. let it burn.

Great job Officer. Best quote from the Trib, "I got caught up in the moment and didn't really think," Leighton said. Thinking of Mother's Day, he added: "I think my mom's going to kill me for that."

No matter how old you are or the fact that you are the Police, moms always have a way of putting fear into you.

Nice work Po-Po!

Off the beat: When will, because we already know 'why,' the public/politicians understand when information on a person being from a high crime area should be explained in detail. For instance, this kid the bears drafted from New Jersey who is a linebacker and grew up in "crime-plagued" Elizabeth, NJ. Then you'll hear from a NJ politician or community activist talking about how it's not that bad, it's getting better...Let's put it out there, it sucks, it absolutely sucks in these shit-towns and the shitty neighborhoods of Chicago. We need change so we could somewhere in this shit town to LIVE.
