Englewood Two-Fer? (UPDATE - Not da Wood)

  • Two men were discovered dead inside a car this afternoon on the South Side in the city's West Englewood neighborhood.

About 3:20 p.m., officers were conducting a well-being check on the 7100 block of South Oakley Avenue and discovered two bodies, one in a back seat and one inside of a trunk of a car, said Police News Affairs [...], citing preliminary information.
And the kicker?
  • Residents said the car had been parked a block north earlier in the week, but may have been towed onto the 7100 block because of street work. A city database of relocations in the last week did not show the car as having been towed or relocated, however.
You'd hate to think a city crew relocated the car with two stiffs inside, but it's happened before.Does this vault 007 into the lead?  And is Leo going to pay a price for it? Seeing as how Carothers never was held responsible for a single thing, why would Ric Flair have to?

UPDATE: West Englewood is evidently in 008. Our bad for not checking the beat map.  But who'd have thought that anyone would label a neighborhood as West Englewood?

Is someone trying to sell real estate there? "Don't worry future homeowners - this is WEST Englewood.  Nothing that matter with this neighborhood."

Maybe Leo did have it towed over the border.

This is Chicago's GDP growth baby. A eff-ing money machine. A tool to use to extract money from the taxpayers.

    /sarcasm?

...On April 30, hours before police officials announced another drop in homicides, the temperature hit 86 degrees for the first time in almost eight months. South Shore erupted: Three people were shot and one killed in six hours.

    Society’s Tab

    ***

The tab for taxpayers and society starts running as soon as a bullet strikes someone, from detectives on the street and trauma surgeons at the city’s public hospital to months of rehab for victims and years of court proceedings for the accused.

The first to arrive at the Budget Food & Liquors crime scene that February evening was the “paper car,” police slang for the unit charged with completing a preliminary report.

Detectives and evidence technicians soon converged on the corner of 79th Street and Essex Avenue. Lower-priority calls were pushed aside. Suspicion of gang involvement brought more, including patrolmen to discourage retaliation. With Glinsey dead on the sidewalk, a homicide team consisting of a sergeant and a handful of investigators were dispatched, said Joseph Salemme, commander of detectives for the South Side.

    Body Bags

The initial response cost as much as $6,000 in salary alone for the roughly five hours that officers spent .....

    ***

    Trauma Bills

On a recent Saturday night, five of eight occupied intensive-care beds in the unit had shooting victims. One man had 10 bullet holes, including one through his jaw that would require a feeding tube for at least six weeks and nursing-home care. Another had a spinal-cord wound that would leave him a quadriplegic and a “significant burden on the taxpayer,” said Dr. Andrew Dennis, 43, a trauma surgeon.

This wasn’t an extraordinary night. Last year, the hospital treated 846 shooting victims at a total cost of about $44 million, with trauma care averaging $52,000 per case, according to the county. Seventy percent of the victims treated at what’s formally called John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital have no insurance, so their bills are part of the annual $500 million taxpayer tab for the county health system.

During the heat of the summer, Dennis said, he’s seen as many as 20 gunshot victims in one 24-hour shift. Several times a month, he’ll see repeat customers. Often, doctors leave the bullets inside because taking them out surgically is more risky.

“Most people who leave, leave with their bullets in them forever,” said Dennis, who exhibits a police officer’s toughness. In fact, he’s a medical director for the Cook County Sheriff’s office and carries a gun when not at the hospital.
    Brain Damage

For the 98 percent of gunshot victims who depart alive, their next stop is often the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Gunshot wounds represent about one in 20 of the institute’s patients, said Dr. Elliot Roth, its medical director. More of its gunshot victims have multiple wounds than those from a decade ago, the result of increasing use of semi-automatic weapons. That can mean exponentially greater neurological damage that is more expensive to treat, Roth said.

Care can cost $100,000 or more -- covered by taxpayers if the patient is indigent -- with the average about $35,000 and inpatient stays lasting about six weeks. Once a victim goes home, making it wheelchair accessible often costs tens of thousands of dollars.

As victims recover, the cost of prosecuting attackers mounts. Police earn overtime for court appearances outside normal shifts, much of it wasted because it’s not uncommon for murder trials to be delayed as many as 20 times. Six to eight officers and detectives may testify.

Its sad to think Englewood was once a nice place to live. Vibrant middle class area. Lots of kids playing in the street. No vacant lots or boarded up buildings. I knew a friend who lived there in the 50s and 60s. He had fond memories of Englewood.

It wasn't till the late 1960s and the great migration that destroyed the neighborhood virtually overnight. Crime spiked, lots of arson, gang bangers and dope dealers took over. One of the legacies of the civil rights movement no one talks about. Same thing for Garfield Park and Austin too.

    Sad. Very sad!

    ********

How much does it cost a taxpayers's family in dollars when taxpayer runs out of ammo defending himself and gets killed? Why do the police need 20 rounds in their service gun? Its the same reason a taxpayer needs 20 rounds. Look at the recent video of the officers that were ambushed by a goofball with an AK. How many rounds were fired by the police and hit the goofball before he was stopped?

I work downtown and have been there for all of these "wildings."

Garry is right. The media is blowing this bullshit way out of proportion. This is the lead story on the news because some teen jagoffs run into the street? Please. The media is just making the problem worse by encouraging these losers.

This is not a big problem and the fact that posters keep making more out of it than they should shows the sad state of this department.

There is just way too much fear on this job today, especially in the police who work downtown. Fear of getting in trouble, fear of shitheads, fear of putting hands on people.

Every time this story gets played up it tells the public one thing. The CPD officers are not up to the job. I find it odd that so many officers like the publicity. It's like they enjoy telling people they are incapable of doing their job.

Get one thing straight. The media is not commenting on the shitheads. The media is commenting on you. The media is telling the public that Chicago Police are punks and everyone on this job eats it up. Odd.

Chicago Killings Cost $2.5 Billion as Murders Top N.Y.’s

When Gregory Glinsey was fatally shot while buying ice for his mother’s 80th birthday party, the emotional toll on his family was incalculable. The immediate price to the public was $800 for his autopsy.

His slaying and 505 others in Chicago last year scarred it with a rising homicide rate as most cities saw declines. Another 2,000 non-fatal shootings in Chicago added costs measured in shuttered businesses, lost wages, disability checks and depopulation. In Glinsey’s case, the price of his random killing mounted before his mother knew her 54-year-old son wouldn’t return from a convenience store in the South Shore neighborhood.

Ok since are leaders feel that our crime rates are down then why the "F" are they only giving 2 people time due in the districts. Its "BS" that all IODs', military and furlo are put into the same day off group request. Hey this is officers time that they've earned and now we can't even use it. Then there is our so call district leaders who automatically start pointing towards downtown being responsible for this and that its also for officer safety. Hey word of advise no one in downtown has cared for officer safety in the last few years. This is nonsense. Officers have been hustling their tales off and to be denied time due even if you have put in a personal day, or baby furlo day within 3 months prior your still being denied. If everyone in downtown or headquarters was so concerned for officer safety then we would've never been short "THOUSANDS" of officers in the first place. Oh yeah, this also goes out to the sell outs at fop whom are not looking to help the situation on the streets but looks like they are more concerned with under the table negotiations! what crock of sh!t!!!

West englewood is Ashland to western. The border of 007 stops at Hamilton. This part of west englewood is in 008. Not Schmitz problem

You used to measure your and your brother's pie with a ruler, didn't you?

And you'd stop to read the instructions on a life jacket while the boat is capsizing.

Who gives a fat rat's ass? All of you are a bunch of mopes who posted 7 vs. 8.

SCC: the Cook County States Attorney are not on our side. An 18th dist officer was hurt this morning responding to a disturbance at a Subway Sandwhich Shop by Chicago and State.

After several calls from the officer of needing assistance to the location, the officer and the offender were fighting inside and the officer broke a finger.

After a foot chase by the officer with a broken finger another officer responded and tasered the offender and he was placed in custody.

The ccsao are putting the Det's and the officers through hoops to approve agg batt to p.o. And want the workers to do a line up on the offender. The offender was a John doe, but his prints came back and the offender is a convicted murderer. Charges are still pending. This is B.S. You have an injured officer who gave chase, and store employee. And the ASA still want line ups. Does this make sense?

so I'm still not sure, did this happen in 007 or 008?

Big fucking deal, SCC messed up, so what. 007, 008, 006, 005 who the fuck cares? I clicked on here to read about some copper on scene who has more of the story.

I swear some of you guys drop everything your doing to correct some typo, misspelling, wrong location, but when it's about the pension or voting you have nothing to say.

aaahhhh it happened in 008! not 007, aahhhhh right over the border ahhh

    5/23/2013 01:37:00 PM

That's why Rahm can steal retiree health care, look at this, no outcry from all the active PO's who will have Obamacare or nothing, they are arguing over which side of Ashland some shitheads were found dead in.

Pensions, healthcare, no matter, the City can buttfuck them all they want, still less than 30% will bother to vote. But let Mike Shields make a mistake that might cost them some nonsense retro pay and whoa Nelly, leave their fucking retro alone.

They don't give a shit about pension or retiree healthcare, just keep making that car payment on the new BMW or that lease payment on the Mercedes.

Any politician with a lick of sense knows they can safely ignore all police officers as a voting force.

Police don't vote! It is as simple as that. They have the voting records and registration records. They know most police aren't even registered to vote! They might get called for jury duty. Oh no, not that!

They talk about the constitution and Republicans and rights but they will roll over for whatever butt fucking the City cares to give them.

Not all, you understand. Just most.

I am sorry I thought the computers belonged to the City of Chicago Police Department. Don't they?

    5/22/2013 10:35:00 PM

go use the computers in the caps office then if that is the case. if you want to use the tact office then bid to the district and put in a to-from to work tact. I don't come to your office and use your computer. its called etiquette

Wow.. Talk about a guy with ego... Who the fu*k are you? You're someone special because you work in the elite tac office? Please... Your shirt is just as blue as mine. Go use the caps office? Are caps people less of coppers than you hard guy? I don't work tac or caps but you think your something special. Guess what pud, when gangs makes an arrest they don't have processing rooms at their unit. Per their orders all arrests are to go to the district of the arrest. So enough with your secret squirrel tac office crap. Get time on the job and learn to play nice with others and stop thinking you and your tac office are off limits because it might interfere with the nightly tac circle jerk. God, way too many tuff guy hard ons who think they are entitled on this job.

Scc u must be from the north side. Engle wood is the name of a neighborhood which is all east of Ashland. West engle wood is the name of another neighborhood which is between Ashland and western.. Just like sauganash and Edison park.. Two different hoods. Chicago geography lesson over

    5/23/2013 12:49:00 PM

Yep but nope. Lived in both. It's not really looked at as two different neighborhoods except for the geography students and college boy nonresidents. The most obvious difference to me was that in West Englewood there were CVLs, Stones, and El Rukns, including BPS strpnghold Moetown. Outside of those blocks, I didn't know any other place in Englewood you'd be caught being a finball... you'd better at least be a GD or BD. Englewood experience lesson over.

Here's the solution...STOP COMING IN WITH MOVERS, PARKERS, ANOV's, or ARRESTS. Answer all your jobs, do all the necessary reports, give as much police service as is required, but STOP GIVING THEM ANYTHING EXTRA. Get a shoplifter, gotta lock 'em up. See six shitheads on the corner? Wave and drive by. If they're not gonna take care of you, don't take care of them.

let me make this a little more clear... three more were stripped. Im not talking about the sgt and p.o. who were ALREADY CHARGED. These three were stripped shortly after the sgt and p.o. arrest. They have been sitting at call back. The charges are coming down soon... what do you know, right as a new u.s. attorney gets sworn in. Perfect timing.

West Engelwood is still 007. Most times the media mentions west engelwood they are still referring to the area east of Hamilton. In fact I can recall Chicago breaking news referring to past incidents on Oakley as having happened in Chicago lawn-008. This was just an oversight-calling Oakley west engelwood. In the future you can rest easy knowing that west engelwood is still part of 007 and therefore under the all knowing and all seeing eye of Deputy Schmitz...Wooooooo!

SCC: the Cook County States Attorney are not on our side:

Wasn't there but could be any number of reasons; waiting for video, the witnesses at the store weren't interviewed, if they were their statements/ID's weren't put into the original report, the witnesses may be telling a different story then the PO.

The ASA's are afraid of their own shadows and can't make a decision unless every box in the file folder is filled in (who cares what the offender's zip code is)
But you're right it should not be this difficult

Oh, now I know for sure that you don't know what you are talking about. The 3 after that incident with the Sgt and PO were not stripped. They were placed in no pay status and were given 1 year suspensions and will be back on the job in July. 2 others were fired. I guess I don't have to tell you anymore since you already think that you know everything.
