CPS Layoffs

All the jobs Rahm likes to tout as "moving to Chicago" are kind of offset by the "bloodbath" at the Chicago Public Schools:
  • Citing a $1 billion budget deficit, Chicago Public Schools will lay off more than 2,000 employees, more than a 1,000 of them teachers, the district said Thursday night.

About half of the 1,036 teachers being let go are tenured.

The latest layoffs, which also include 1,077 school staff, are in addition to 855 employees—420 of them teachers--who were laid off last month as a result of the district’s decision to close 49 elementary schools and a high school program.

CPS spokeswoman Becky Carroll said the district was “scraping the bottom” of reserves to provide financial relief and had made cuts in other spending before making layoffs.

“We’re not going to be able to cut our way out of this crisis,” Carroll said. “Our revenues are simply not keeping in line with our spending increases.”
It is amusing to see the Machine eating its own (and oldest) supporters.

Not to worry.

Mayor Rahm's Battan Death March of children across gang boundaries will likely result in reduced classroom sizes.

And we still have Maggie Daley Park and the new bike paths!!

We call that investing in our future.

Watch Detroit, The money is gone. Watch the fights amongst the clouted ones there as they turn on each other. It's gonna happen. There's no-one left to scam at the lower levels.

Oh AND FOR GOD"S SAKE LET"S RAMP UP THIS G. ZIMMERMAN THING TO GET THIS OTHER STUFF OFF THE FRONT PAGES!.

For crying out loud. RACE BAITING MEDIA JUMPING TO THE POLITICIAN DEMANDS All of a sudden they are trying to present an image like we are back in the '20's. Racism may not be 100% gone and never will be. But this is pure propaganda designed to create social unrest for political purposes. Something that one would expect from the Taliban.

In his own way the Ballerina is helping you, though it is not his aim.

You are being gentrified. It is painful.

The Community is subtly being encouraged to DIE as a collection of cancer cells. This is the only solution for the social cancer although it brings risk of Metastatis to others [too bad].

The next step is a law/order mayor who is in favor of gay marriage, perhaps even lives with a gay couple during his operatic divorce.

It's not perfect, but it works.

As their funding shrinks and their spending increases, our property taxes rise to make up for the increase in the amount of TIFs that redirect tax revenues to the mayors pet projects. I have to wonder if the mayor asked Moody's to down grade the city's credit rating just to create a crisis to screw over his perceived enemies? I don't trust him and wouldn't be surprised if he did!

But of course the spending spree continues.

How about controlling the things that you spend $$$ on.

Do you really need cable tv?
Do you really need weekly catered luncheons?
Do you really need IPads?

How about the rest of you list some of the items that you know these schools spend foolishly on?

Rahm always wins in the end, remember that....Karen Lewis won a round last fall but Rahm holds the power and he is a vindictive SOB. Next week he will announce more millions to be given to the Charter schools run by his cronies and most of the public will yawn.

They don't give a shit about classroom sizes, it's all about packing warm bodies in the seats (and cafeterias) to maximize the federal funds that the worthless Dept of Ed sends home from Washington.

How about charging a small tuition fee for those who use the public school system? Maybe $100.00 per kid per year. I don't know, could this possibly help?

Anonymous CPS Teachers Need to Choose Chicago said...

So, 1036 CPS teachers were let go Friday due to budget cuts, 420 because of 49 school closings, and another 500 'non-tenured' teachers were let go in May for a total of 1956 CPS teachers, so....

Here's a novel way of getting the money needed to keep other schools open and to save teaching jobs in the future: make CPS teachers 'Choose Chicago' and move to Chicago and have them help increase Chicago's revenue while pitching in to pay their salaries. Both CPS and the CTU have avoided suggesting this, why?

Is CPS avoiding this because Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett and Tim Cawley live outside Chicago?

And, hasn't CTU President Karen Lewis bemoaned the number of CPS teachers living outside Chicago and commuting into Chicago to teach inner-city children?

Conservatively, 'grandfathered' CPS teachers/staffers (15%-20%) and those in working 'need basis subject areas' (15%-20%) could account for 30%-40% of all teachers living outside Chicago.

So, out of 22,290 CTU teachers (from the start of last school year), there's said to be 6687 to 8916 teachers living outside Chicago at an avg teacher salary of $72K......

...which means $481,464,000 to $641,952,000 in salaries are going to teachers living outside Chicago....Chicago taxpayers are entitled to know about these figures when the city jacks their property taxed up to the tilt and then some to help pay for CPS salaries....

The questions which need to be answered are:

Can 'grandfathered' CPS teachers/staffers move out of the city after November 20, 1996 (those hired after this date must live in Chicago) if they were hired before this date or are there no restrictions on them to remain Chicago residents?

If close to 3000 CPS teachers and staffers will lose there jobs this fall, due to school closings and budget cuts, will those allowed to live outside Chicago because they work in 'need basis subject areas' still be allowed to get this residency waiver?

Is there really a need anymore if there's 40-50 people looking for work, including those in need basis subject areas?

How does CPS actually determine if a subject area is a need basis?

All those jobs gone! Forever! Where's the money? Where did it go? Remember when Phil Jackson now head of the black star project took over CPS? He exposed all the corruption, opened up CPS warehouses and showed all the computers, bikes, books, cars, covered in dust never used but bought! He was fired almost immediately, he shined a bright light so they dumped him quickly, most likely paid him off! We need to be like Egypt have the military throw them out! Enough!

They already do this - it's called an "activities fee" and it runs well over $100 in some schools.

Rahm has announced over a BILLION dollars in assorted spending initiatives since becoming mayor...

Fuck that little snake...

The city ain't broke.

He made his phone call to the rating agencies to make a big public splash against us and our pensions to piggy-back on the fucked up news from Detroit...

Rahm is playing "Hide da Money."

A new casino with proceeds all going to the schools?

A vehicle for flat out theft...

Funny... He ain't got SHIT to say to shortshanks about this mess but he wants to fuck us and our families up for playing by the rules?

A note to the alderfools... You clowns were ok with voting repeatedly to underfund Police pensions, so you should burn in the same HELL with us and not get SHIT!"

why do elementary and high school teachers get or need tenure? they're not teaching controversial subjects like they do in universities...

tenure = sloth @ the elementary and high school levels. Risk of being fired = fire under your ass to perform.

we want students toperform well, hence teachers need to do so as well.

no tenure. teach or get fired. no bullshit.

You can't teach some of those idiots. If teachers have to teach or get fired , they will get fired or do what Atlanta and a few other cities public school systems did. The principals of the schools had test and grade changing parties for the teachers where they made all the kids pass. Been going on for years and will continue

Controversy certainly exists at that level, especially since elem teachers are faced with being measured by test scores vs. actually teaching students to wonder, co-operate, and solve real problems. Why not just re-state what you really mean to say, i.e., elementary teachers are mostly women with no sophistication or skill, so f&^k em
