Deputize the Tourists

Out-of-towners seem to making a bunch of arrests or attempts at arrests lately - maybe because there still aren't enough police on the street?
  • Here's what firefighter Gary Martin did on his vacation to Chicago: He chased down a purse-snatcher who robbed an elderly woman on North Michigan Avenue and pinned him to the ground.

"I grabbed him by the scruff of the neck,'' said Gary Martin, 47, from London, Ontario. "He went down right away. He really didn't have a whole bunch of fight in him. It wasn't like an all-out brawl."

In town for the first time, Martin said he wanted to see what he'd look like sporting a Cubs cap so he popped into a Michigan Avenue shop around noon Tuesday with his girlfriend.

"I had it on and I was looking in the mirror in this little gift shop and I just heard a woman kind of behind the store screaming, 'My purse, my purse,' '' Martin said Thursday.
He tackled and held the thief until a nearby security guard arrived to assist until police could arrive, which they did in short order.

Well done Mr. Martin.

Today I participated in the procession that took Shamekia Goodwin-Badger from Wheeling to O'Hare so she could be flown to her final resting place in Ft. Lauderdale. During the procession I realized how tight the police family is, not just in Wheeling but throughout the entire Chicagoland area. We drove past the police department one last time and it was very emotional as Shamekia would never be at our PD again and this would be here final pass through the Village of Wheeling. All village employees lined the police drive and the FD had their ladder truck extended and an American flag was draped down as we drove under it. The drive towards O'Hare down Milwaukee Avenue then River Road was very impressive as numerous Wheeling squad cars and other agencies had emergency lights activated and sirens on as we made our way to the airport. Along the route other departments blocked intersections to make sure our drive was smooth and without a hitch. Once we reached the Rosemont/Chicago border, Chicago PD took us the rest of the way. Every intersection was blocked by 2 squad cars who stopped traffic and saluted as we passed. Chicago PD escorted us all the way to the Delta cargo hanger and we thought our mission was over. Chicago PD officers assigned to O'Hare showed us the way to pay tribute to Shamekia as we stood in 2 lines as she was taken from the hearse to the cargo carrier while we saluted. When Shamekia's flight arrived at O'Hare, Chicago PD arranged for 2 vans to take us to the terminal where the plane was. With Chicago PD squads in front and back with their lights on, they escorted us to the plane's terminal. Waiting at the terminal were several Chicago FD trucks and ambulances as well as firemen and paramedics standing and waiting for us. Chicago officers made sure to line us up as we watched Shamekia being taken from the cargo truck and placed onto the plane that would take her to her final resting spot in Florida. We all stood at attention and saluted to say our final farewell to our co-worker and sister-in-blue. A crowd was gathered inside the terminal and I couldn't have been more proud of the organization and help of everyone involved and there's no doubt the onlookers were impressed.

Shamekia will be deeply missed by her immediate family and her Village of Wheeling family as well as her extended family of men and women in blue. Thanks to everyone who made these past several days a special tribute to a fallen officer. From all of the officers in the area, the suburbs who sent officers to the memorial, to Chicago PD and Chicago FD for going above and beyond at O'Hare to make her final trip home special. The Wheeling Honor Guard also deserves special mention because they showed everyone how professional of a department Wheeling has.

RIP Shamekia, we'll take it from here....

On behalf of the officers of the Wheeling PD we would like to thank the CPD and CFD for all their help in sending our fallen sister to her final resting place. Everyone involved today was a class act and to that we will be forever grateful.

It's too bad the judge will probably let him off with 'no charge.' Why can't we put these criminals to work on work-details to help clean up some of the trash they throw around? A good 3-month+ sentence cleaning streets and washing walls with graffiti would probably help keep them busy and out of trouble for a while.

Da police be killun deez chillen in Chicago.

If the cops were, you would have 400 witnesses all coming in and saying they saw plus all the videos they took on their phones.

Stop with the lies. Stop with the inflammatory statements. Stop crying victim. Take some responsibility.

Who is the racist? Who ARE the racists?

Start cooperating with the police in solving some of these murders instead of "playin' a fool and acting dumb".

"Ise didn't see nuthin" - isn't going to help solve the problem in your neighborhood.

And you media trolls out there- start reporting the real violence instead of writing about some BS restaurant, some overrated CPS student (He is so great, he came to school everyday without breaking a window in the classroom) or some kum-bay-yah sensitivity group.

What happened to "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Now it's "Hey what else am I's entitled to besides dis' free phone and my LINK card?"

Taxpayers are tired of hearing your perpetual whining.

racist, this was a hate crime, the white lady intentionally carried her purse in view of a another person. Then a white person attacked him after he tried to long-term borrow the purse.

Sharpton, Obama, Holder you better get the riots going. This is not going to be allowed in this city. We need to keep this white on black crime from happening. Time to ban purses.

Actually the way she carried her purse was suspicious. No woman in Chicago would carry her purse like that unless she was up to no good. The Michigan ave. watch captain stopped her to ascertain what she was doing. Unbeknownst to him he was attacked from behind by a thug tourist.

What you wrote was heart felt by me, and thank you for writing it. I am so very sorry about the death of Officer Goodwin-Badger. My condolences and prayers are with her family, by blood and by blue. It is not above and beyond the call of duty, because yes, we are a tight family. The lights and sirens may be our way of saying "God Speed." May she rest in peace.

I find it pathetic the city subsidizes store security by posting 4 cops in front of Ralph Lauren, while it's freakin free-for-all at State and Chicago...that McDonalds is like skid row. I guess Rahm has to find someone to keep business on the Muggers Mile. And the same day I was visiting my old hood at Belmont and Halsted, and wow...you can see their neighborhood is held hostage by scum.
No cops at L, while dude works people trying to get a train.

Is that why Texas is running out of the drug used for lethal injections of death row inmates. Crime is rampant in Texas just like it is in all southern states. More police officers are killed in the south than any other region in this nation.
