Homeless Solution

  • Lawmakers in the Aloha State want to wave goodbye to their growing homeless population -- by buying them a one-way ticket off the island.

Hawaii's controversial three-year “Return to Home” pilot program launches later this year and is being billed as a way to help the state’s 17,000 homeless residents, while reducing the financial burden the state has in caring for them. Under the plan, the state will pay for a one-way plane ticket for any homeless resident who can find someone on the mainland to take them in.

The program, which has a $100,000 annual budget, is the brainchild of state Rep. John Mizuno, who had unsuccessfully tried to get a similar plan through the past three legislative sessions. This year, the measure was attached to a larger spending bill and squeaked through the state legislature.

Critics, though, say the program is a quick fix and does nothing to address the root causes of homelessness.
Sure it does - it makes it somebody else's problem. And just in case anyone thinks that this is some elitist program by uppity Hawaiians, we'll just point out it's a New York idea so everyone here feels better about stealing it:
  • But Hawaii’s relocation plan isn’t a new idea. It is fashioned after a New York City program implemented six years ago. The Mayor Michael Bloomberg-backed plan bought hundreds of homeless families bus tickets, train rides and airfare so they could leave the city.

According to the latest figures available, New York City spent at least $500,000 annually on Project Reconnect. From 2007 to 2009, the Bloomberg administration, which has struggled with homelessness, sent more than 550 families packing. They argue that sending away families is a lot less expensive than housing them in shelters which cost the city more than $36,000 a year per family.
Baton Rouge, San Francisco, New Orleans and numerous Florida cities have similar programs in place. It'd save Rahm a whole bunch of money and the Machine could probably still get their votes counted somehow. Win-Win.

Well you really need to get rid of all those homeless people in HI. Otherwise they all end up hanging out at the Obama library when it's built and Washington certainly doesn't want that.

Years ago, while on the summer mobile detail, we suddenly started seeing a surge in vagrants trying to find hidden places along the lakefront to camp for the night.
When asked, many of them, individually, on separate occasions, in different spots, all had the same story. They were from Detroit, made to board a church bus, told the shelters there were closed, but that after a ride to Chicago they would be given a voucher for hotel rooms and gift certificates for groceries. Neither of which would happen. They were dumped near the lake.

This appears to be a violation that falls under the Civil Rights Act. Therefore Eric Holder, Obama and DOJ should sue Hawaii and San Francisco and New York City for vlating the civil rights of the receiving localities.

Hmmm- let's see: a $100,000 budget, divided by 17,000 homeless. That would give each one a $5.88 airfare ticket back to the mainland! Of course, that doesn't even cover the baggage fee. Hey, since this program was conceived in New York, isn't that how why got McWhiskey? Maybe we can get his replacement from Hawaii the same way?

Southern cities and states used to put poor blacks on buses and send them to Chicago. They called them "Reverse Freedom Riders".

Daley the First welcomed them and hooked them up to benefits/voter cards, determined never to have a close call like he did in the 1963 election again.

Old idea.

Here's an easy idea. The police should simply detain any homeless people panhandling downtown or Lincoln park throw them in the paddy wagon and drop them off around 63rd and halsted.

Round them all up and let them occupy one of the thousands of abandoned homes in Englewood and Auburn Gresham.

MEXICO! Yeah, that's the ticket, one way of course. Kind of to balance things out a little.

The Phillipines? Save $, use an old troop ship? Same ocean, what's the prob?

create a situation whereby unearned rewards collected from the tax payer are handed out,

spend more tax payer money on efforts to remove these zero-liability creatures from the line.

brilliant.

San Francisco, New Orleans and New York all all have similar programs? How shocking these are such progressive thinking, liberal cities and they want to ship people like cattle away so they don't have to look at them. Do and think as I say not as I do is the liberal way I guess.

I have been going to HI. since 1970 it was a beautiful place with great people the only drug you even heard of was Maui Wowie. I stopped going there about 8 years ago because it became a shithole. I had many friends mostly Police and lifeguards who told me "ICE" had invaded the Islands and loss of respect for the family structure had broken down. They believed it was shitheads from the mainland , mostly Kalifornia that started it. It was obvious to me just by seeing these bums hanging out where you would never see that years ago. Too bad it was a great place to go but I would skip it now.

Think about it. So your homeless in Hawaii and really want to take a vacation, what do you do? Get the Hawaiian government to fly you and your homeless buddies to New York. Stay a few weeks, sample the food kitchens, check out the shelters and down a few 40oz. And when you get home sick, New York will fly your home to Hawaii. I love it.

I recall working O'Hare spec emp back when the Fed money was flowing. I was in terminal 3, I believe, American Airlines. The TSA's called me because they had a guy who fit various profiles, no baggage, minimal ID, paid for a one way ticket to California in cash, vague answers etc.

The guy was a piss bum fresh off his post on the Kennedy Expressway. He begged enough money to go to O'Hare and bought a ticket to California to avoid the coming Chicago winter. He paid for his one way airplane ticket with a pocketful of stinky singles and a pile of change.

So the TSA's were processing him like normal and had him remove his shoes. Ohhhh baby, they quickly realized that mistake and told him to put his dirty sneakers back on over his now black, once white, socks. His stinky feet cleared a 15 foot circle all around him. None of those young perky TSA's wanted to touch him to do the search so they looked to me to rescue them, I don't know, arrest the guy or something. But I was under orders not to leave my post. Their job, get a can of Glade or Lysol spray but the guy did nothing wrong that a dunk in some car wash wouldn't fix.

He stank and was filthy, not a crime. So the thing landed in the lap of the American Airlines boss after CPD and then TSA cleared him for flight.

American Airlines actually boarded this stinking piss bum on a crowded airliner. I almost split a gut on that one, very funny, the stench lingered but I felt sorry for those on the flight with stinky pants.

The airlines, politically correct, of course, couldn't think on their feet and come up with a reason to refuse the guy. So old piss bum goes laughing to the gate with his cocktail cash clasped in his hand.

You just don't get to have fun on this job any more.

In Rogers Park the wagon guys used to do the same thing to Skokie, Evanston, Lincolnwood, any suburb we could shove the bums for the remainder of the tour. Sorry guys, statute has expired.

In the days of old 023/019, the 019 guys would squeeze the bums east of Clark and the 023 guys would return the favor. Once they combined districts that was over with.

It seems like a certain segment of our population who can't be proficient at crime or get disability from a crooked doctor just becomes an entitled, spoiled rotten homeless who sucks off the welfare of others.
I am looking to move somewhere less politically correct, like where I'm from where they weren't allowed above 15th street and you could go to Publix in peace and you could even go weeks without getting panhandled. If there were jobs I'd go back in a second.

When I was a kid you didn’t see homeless people. That was because a family took care of each other in those days. Now people have no problem putting their family responsibilities off on the state. It is the decay of the modern family that is to blame for this and if this program manages to unite family members and re-establish the traditional American support network – more power to them.

Yeah, Uncle Fester might be a doper or a drunk and you don’t like having mister stinky around but he is still your damn uncle and shame on you if you let him live that way.

Shame – we need a lot more of it!

How did these programs keep the "homeless"(sorry - the "un-housed") from returning after their vacations to other locations? Like going to Florida for the winter and then coming back to the "Big Apple" for the summer, will their benefits still be available or did they have to sign off on not getting any in the future. As if the ACLU wouldn't just love to sue over that. Sounds like a Mariel boat lift without the one-way- adios feature - America, what a country!
