$669,608 for Doors?

  • Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and look for a set of exterior doors for your home or business, and the cost likely wouldn’t exceed a few thousand dollars.

But if you’re looking for the kind of copper-coated doors that give the gaudy shine of a brand-new penny to three entrances to the state Capitol, forget about finding those in a strip shopping mall or paying anything less than what a suburban mansion might cost.

Capitol Architect J. Richard Alsop III Wednesday confirmed a published report that the new doors — part of a $50 million overhaul of the state Capitol — cost taxpayers $669,608 to buy and install.

That amount has triggered a new round of criticism toward the renovation project from a prominent financial watchdog and one of the state Legislature’s most aggressive fiscal hawks, who both questioned the optics of spending so much on mere doorways that once featured more modest, plain glass doors with handles in the shape of the state seal.

Well, you know that our kings, queens and social betters deserve to have shiny, copper-clad doors - how else would anyone know that they're important people?

$700,000 for 3 doors?

No wonder they want younger people "stoned" and want to take guns away from older people. What was it Marie Antoinette said: "Let them eat cake." Same attitude.

Illinois is the Land of Lincoln.

This logic doesn't make sense to you?

Well, in the state's defense, those doors were an odd size, and had to be custom ordered...and you know you can't return those custom orders. The good thing is, they opened a Home Depot card account and got no interest for 12 months!!!!

LOL, I saw this on the news. No wonder the state is broke. Bottom line the government needs to pay their pension obligations. If I was crying broke the last thing I would do is do something like this. And how much did the company 'donate' to which political fund? Unreal but not surprising.

My opinion is this; I think most of the people working for the state/city would have no problem with a reduction in benefits if the state/city was really doing the right thing with the tax money and it just wasn't working out financially. It's really hard for me to agree to pension cuts when RE pisses away $55 million on a park. Yeah RE we need another park for $55M. Let me guess, it's also for the childrens. Unreal.

$670,000 is lot of money but in comparison to other things our money is spent on it's peanuts.
--- $670K = Welfare for 30-40 families for one year, illegals.
--- $670K = One year's Salary for 22 Bi-Lingual teachers for illegals.
--- $670K = One year's Education Cost for 67 illegals (3 classrooms)
--- $670K = Medicaid Cost to treat Two Gunshot Wounds of some scumbag gangbangers.
--- $670K = One year housing cost for approx 30 Convicted Felons in prison.
--- $670K = Housing One Convicted Murderer in prison for 22 years.

Or $670K for Historically Correct Doors that will last well over 100 Years.
I'll take the doors, eliminate the others. (Cut, Deport, and/or Execute as req'd)

Has anyone been to the Capitol? I was shocked at how ornate the House and Senate Chambers were. State of the art workstations, etc. My first thought was, "how much did this all cost?" The tour guide said the House had been redone a few years ago, making the Senate jealous, so they redid theirs a year later. Fiscal responsibility in action.

Rahm's Midway Airport Privatization Deal Crashes

15 bidders walked away from the table and so the Chicago Trib attempting to show Rahm dealing from a position of strength says: Mayor Emanuel decided to end talks.

HAHA

There was one bidder left for the 40 year contract, At least it was only for two generations of taxpayers that would lose control of that asset.

Unlike the three to four generations of the Skyway and the parking meter deal.

Selling assets because the city is running out of options on taxes

Selling assets because the city has run out of options borrowing more money,

Selling assets because the TIF funds and tax breaks to the political campaign contributing corporations jobs have fail big time to make a difference in employment.

At what point do we lose control over our sovereignty -- when we sell out to overseas investors from China I guess.

Once we sell enough of the city and state assets we're under China's rule.

Don't look for any help from the next generation when it comes to funding social security or pensions. The handwriting is on the wall. Student loan debt is sitting at $1.2 trillion dollars and close to 1/3 of the debt is being paid late or is in default.

There's 7 million kids in default because they bought into the American dream lie, mortgaged their future, and are now stuck in indentured servitude.

You just can't make student loan payments on a WalMart-like job.

You can't get married, You can't move out of your moms house and you can't discharge the debt in bankruptcy.

Seven million kids in student loan defaults. Who's gonna hire them with their newly minted sheepskins. The default is an indication that they are irresponsible, right?

They are on food stamps now because they followed the politicians bullshit of you need a higher education and there's a skill shortage over here. no..wait..now the skill shortage is over there. Oh shit, sad day for you I guess you picked the wrong major. Why don't you do back to school and pile on some more debt ...hahaha.

Sick political jackazzes pulling this massive ponzi scam.

Once the kids realize it..oh man. But then again those that are depending on handing the torch to them to generate revenue and economic growth well good luck with that plan. You wanted globalization, now we all deal with the consequences

I'm a big believer in historic restoration, especially since the US doesn't grasp the importance of preserving our short history and historic places.
However, the State is in financial free-fall. We are forced to economize and prioritize in our households and I don't see why it should be any different on the State level. Of course, when you have a governor who's a millionaire and has no idea what 'economize' means, you get stuff like this happening.
The doors are not a travesty. The timing is. When (if) Illinois is humming along again and its finances are on track, well, that's the time to undertake multimillion dollar restorations. Meanwhile, maintain the roof and heating systems, but backburner the chandeliers and fluff.
