D.C. PENA came into a third watch foot roll call in 010 and told them that they were to not going to be permitted lunch. They would have to bring their own brown bag lunch and sit on the curb to eat.
And she wanted more contact cards.
Well, is it true?
010 is blessed with a boatload of good places to eat. And it is often said that a good foot guy is never cold, wet or hungry. We can't see this being an issue to a smart copper. But if it is, and you are actually ordered to forgo lunch, for pete's sake, fill out the slip and get paid for it.

Yes this is true.. She came in and yelled at the roll call and their sgt(in front of the PPOs) about how "shit rolls down hill" and how mad she was they did not prevent a shooting in the box and that the PPOs didn't make any arrests in relation to the shooting, she stated they are not allowed to leave the box under any circumstances and that they had to bring their own lunch and she didn't care if they had to sit on the steps of a building and eat it.

Her tact team working the same hours as the first watch midnight cars, the early cars are leaving a full hour before them every night. Why they put up with it is beyond me but I digress, Everything that she could have fucked up in that district she has, literally everything hell we have four working printers in the whole building and two of them are in her office, could she maybe take care of that, nope. We haven't had blue or red property bags for months and don't even get me started on envelopes of any kind. Some may say that's minor bulshit, but when even the little things are being overlooked and fucked up imagine how the est of the ship is operating. Lookups with only 1-2 civilians at all times no POs at all. No cars to be found.
She's got a lot of bark, and little bite. She has already cost the City one expensive lawsuit for her poor decision making when it comes to "relationships" with officers.
Let her try to write you up for sitting in a restaurant.

We used to come to work and the sergeant told us to come to check off as sober as at roll call and he wasn't kidding.
Sorry to burst all of the labor attorney's bubble on here...but I've never seen the line that you be allowed to go somewhere for lunch? May be wrong, but the contract says you will get a 30 minute unpaid lunch. If not, you will be paid for it..PPOs don't have a contract, they don't get time and a half, and are obligated, just like everyone else, to follow a direct order.
This isn't new. It is happening with EVERY OI zone. They say it, and the Sergeants help the guys and gals out and take the heat.

Sad to say I hear or see this all the time on this job. Even in the busy district. A PO I was working with the other day would rather read her book then help an officer out in a foot chase that was a couple blocks away.
Part of me doesn't blame the city for attempting to use the current officer more effectively, but that didn't happen cause officer feel they are hurting the city when they decided not to do their job. They are really hurting the citizens that need protection from shitheads.
now the city has hired more officers and these PPO's are just as lazy as the officer with time on the job.

I do not believe a PO can file a ULP complaint. It must come from a labor organization, the union.

Ah, yes they can. While it is in the contract, any boss ( or dispatcher) can deny lunch based on man power needs.
Our contract also states that if this were to happen then you will get compensated for working through your lunch.
Fill out that little yellow slip at the end of your watch. And make a copy for yourself. If your Sgt or Watch Commander refuses to sign, seek out your union rep and tell them you wish to file a grievance.

I am so sick of those contact cards. I remember in 009 when Jarmusz said he wanted 3 contact cards per person, per day, per GMAC. Well guess how many I have churned out since then? I think like two or three and that was a year ago.
I remember working third watch in 022. Alexander had (and I am sure he still does) have a hard on for curfews. The guy lived and slept for curfews. Guess how many of those I did? Zero.
This is why I own my own biz. Guess how many contact cards and curfew I had to do to make my business phone ring? LMFAO. Yes, kids, you guessed it. Zero. I do a good job at my side business and guess what? No clout, no phone calls to a higher power. I do my job and my phone rings unlike this fucked up job. I make more at my side biz than at the CPD job. Last year combined I made as much as the first deputy. Of course I'd rather be the 1st Deputy but I realize the sheer odds are against me. I have two years to go and plan on leaving at age 47 1/2.
My advice to all is DON'T rely upon this job for your OT. Do something else. I once took a 30 day suspension and laughed all the way to the bank as I made more money while I was off.

Yes, as someone who came on in the 60's and was issued a call box key, I certainly can say that this really did happen on occasion. Only a few actually abused it.
As a retired guy, ,y sympathies for those who have to work for this women. I suppose that she could strictly enforce the lunch times, that is 1/2 hour without travel time, which would be rare for the department. Nothing wrong with filling out contact cards when you question someone. If they refuse to cooperate, then walk on. Do not pat down or search unless you really suspect they have a weapon. Protect yourself.
Such assholes on city jobs. I have a soft as baby shit suck-hole telling me that the boss wants me eating by myself in a room.

Sounds like Henny Penny's long lost sister- Henny Penny is now monitoring the radio sign-in sheet for 3rd watch before they check off. All because of some argument between a couple of 5 yr wonder management guys and a midnight desk guy who cried to the capt about it. Now the whole watch is punished- over some petty bs. Thanks to all 3 of you by the way, who've turned a simple nightly routine into a ridiculous pet project for a captain who already has nothing to do but cause problems where there are none. Of course, the captain could have took all three of these "men" and sat down in her office to work it out and resolve the issue, but no, that would have been the logical and sensible thing to do. The captain could have also reminded the desk guy that he bid for that spot and has the option of pushing a beat car if he so desires, should the desk become too stressful/unmanageable for him. I never want to hear how broke this city is because if we have the money to pay a six figure salary to a woman to monitor a radio log, we have more than enough to fund the pension. As many have pointed out numerous times before, I'll add it once again- we have an abundance of absolutely retarded incompetent bosses in this department.

Lunch is guaranteed under federal law. if you are not paid for your lunch your employer can not tell you that you can not leave the premise or your beat. If you are paid for your lunch, they can tell you to stay. Last time I looked we have an UNPAID lunch.
Lunch is an amount of time, not a guaranty to go somewhere. When I was a PPO directing traffic you got to eat where you could walk to in 30 minutes. Nothing new here-stop hating on the commander.

A long time ago, in Englewood, on 3rd watch, a PO requested lunch several times and was denied each request. A little later he (a one man car) told the dispatcher he wanted an ambulance because he felt light headed and thought he was going to pass out. Amb was sent & he was taken to St B, where IV, blood work, etc, etc was done. His squad car was driver back to the station, another car did the Hosp case, Sgt did IOD, and witness (first car on scene) statements collected. The PO got dinner in the ER, and sat a couple hours. He was excused for the rest of the tour, driven home and his car driven home. Lots of police resourses were tied up. He was IOD for a couple weeks pending the results of medical tests and total physical by his Dr.
Everybody in 007 knew it was BS, but all the White Shirts played it buy the book, fearing a law suit.
After this stunt, we all got lunch when requested, in spite of any jobs pending.
I'm not suggesting a PPO do this, they will fire you for your poor health. It's just another war story from the Good Old Days.

Yes they can, you are mistaken. However, they have to pay you for it . They can violate Illinois state law. you are entitled to a lunch and two 15 min breaks in the law. But, you only get 30 minutes, no travel time allowed ! So if no car, yes you will be sitting on someone's front porch or curb to eat your sandwich!!
Nothing like rallying the troops by pissing them off to high heaven.
Remember, this is a neighborhood where you have to bribe the parents with a Walgreens gift card in order to pick up their kid's report card.

I had a countdown calendar when I reached a thousand days until retirement. I had a software program that came up on my web browser that had the days, hours, minutes and seconds left until retirement.
As time went by I marked off all the milestones, 500 days left, 100 days left, 30 days, 10 days, then the day before and finally, the big day was upon me.
Now I am retired almost a year and it feels great. No more stress from the goofball hierarchy of this screwy police department. I hope you will all make it to retirement safely. Enjoy your last year, take pictures, maybe write some stuff down, enjoy yourself. Don't get too involved in anything, keep backing up your partners though. Stay safe.
Once it is all over, that is it, it's over for good. No more once around the district. No more blue light on your car, no more VIP parking, no more Prince of the City. A civilian again.
Enjoy it. And then it will be time to go visit the grandkids.

Today this practice might be called CROSSREFERENCEING.

No benefits or time off, but the freedom and total independence can't be beat. Not a bad gig at all. Look into it if you are really serious. It's not a joke, I have been 2 hours late to work for the better part of 3 months now. Guess what? I still have a job, take lunch anywhere and when ever I want. The worst part is the police, but you know you won't have that problem, as you know P.O.s are some of the best drivers out there. Truer words were never spoken! I am often amazed when I see officers from one side of the city taking lunch many miles from where their district borders lie. Travel 15 minutes to take a 30 minute lunch. Stay down on a BS domestic or traffic stop for thisclose to an hour before coming 'clear, and hold me down for lunch at'....it goes both ways, guys. And I see far more west side cops taking lunches far away from their districts than I do officers from any other districts. I'm sure Pena isn't perfect but if you're so miserable, please reconsider your commitment to the job and LEAVE. There are many people out there who have jobs that hold them far more accountable for their time while working than you.

Pena has no people skills when it comes to being a boss. She thinks she's funny but that has no place in when she's in the position she is in. It might just be her lifestyle. . The PPO's work for a dumb but nice merit Sgt that will be retired soon anyways. Pena might have a strong bark but what she really gonna do? Don't know what show you've been watching but the one I've been watching is Low Winter Sun. You know, as in that thin, brittle winter sunlight that sort of comes in sideways?
And since it's only been on for three whole weeks, and one of the criminals is a black detective, you need to take a deep breath and reassess.

As far as comment about the racial makeup of the criminals in Low Winter SUN, I said "most" of the criminals are white. That is unrealistic in a city that is 90% black. It would be like watching a crime drama set in Tokyo and all (or most)of the criminals are white or black, but not Japanese.
Shows that lack realism belong on the Sci-Fi channel.
You probably thought "Sharknado" portrayed sharks and twisters in an unfair light as well.

The foreign policy of the United States is within the purview of the president with the exception of making war. The nation of Syria does not pose a clear and present danger to the United States.
