Whole Foods in Englewood?
- Mayor Rahm Emanuel sought Wednesday to reshape the debate over his efforts to shrink the city's so-called food deserts by announcing plans to open a Whole Foods Market in the impoverished Englewood neighborhood three years from now.
The announcement that the upscale grocer was going to a ZIP code where population is declining and the median household income hovers below $20,000 came one week after a Tribune story showed Emanuel has fallen short of his goals to bring fresh foods and vegetables to low-income neighborhoods with limited access to such staples.
A failing/dying neighborhood where the economic realities fall far outside Whole Foods target demographics? Makes PERFECT sense!
On the bright side, there aren't many folks (or people) who will be shoplifting heads of organic lettuce. Anyone want to guess what the incentive was to provide Rahm with this sappy headline and opportunity to claim he's reducing so-called "food deserts?" Maybe a few extra stores to open up in the city or permit/licensing waivers?

Whole Foods getting $10 million in TIF funds. Store coming by 2016? Let's follow this money......
It will be robbed and thieved out of existence within 3 years.
Welcome to Englewood, home of Bullet-Hole Foods (too easy!).
They should send 700 there to be the manager, then he can micromanage Whole Foods like he micromanages every po and sgt in 007. Cleanup in aisle 10 whooooooo
WANTED - SECURITY GUARDS
Whole Foods, 6250 S. Halsted St.
Whole Foods will be hiring at least 100 security guards and loss prevention specialists at our new market in Englewood. $8.50/hour.
Why not? They're already all over the other Whole Foods stores using their link cards, then walking out to their brand new Ford Escapes. That's why I go to Mariano's.
I think it is a riot. Made me laugh because when I go to a store and they ask my zip code I use 60624.
This will not work. The money does not add up. Whole foods will lose money.
Another sign Chicago is following Detroit down the tubes..
Black Homeownership Collapses As "Livable, Affordable Housing" Slips Out Of Reach
President Obama's speech last during the 50th anniversary of MLK may seem sadly ironic now. As he noted, "Dr. King explained that the goals of African-Americans were identical to working people of all races: decent wages, fair working conditions, livable housing..." but the facts are that, as Bloomberg reports, while, for most Americans, the real estate crash is finally behind them and personal wealth is back where it was in the boom; For blacks in the U.S., 18 years of economic progress has vanished, with a rebound in housing slipping further out of reach and the unemployment rate almost twice that of whites.
The homeownership rate for blacks fell from 50% during the housing bubble to 43% in the second quarter, the lowest since 1995. The rate for whites stopped falling two years ago, settling at about 73%, only 3 percentage points below the 2004 peak.
As Rev. Alvin Love, who knew Obama in the 80s notes, "it's going to take a generation to get back to the point where homeownership can build wealth in this community."
. . .
The median wealth of white households was 20 times that of blacks and 18 times the Hispanic rate, a record gap in data going back three decades that is twice the pre-recession size, according to a 2011 Pew study
According to the US census Chicago's White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, population in 2010 = 31.7%
And we're looking a generation NOT A YEAR OR A DECADE, OR TWO DECADES, A GENERATION for the other 68.3% to regain their wealth stolen by investment banking scams, liar loans, credit swaps, foreclosure fraud and REMIC trust fraud.
Not a single banking exec. gone to prison and that makes Garry's Broken Window talk BULLSHIT!
Anyways...There went the tax base.
We see it already Cutting CPD. Cutting educations.
Ahhh But the mayors friends and relatives escape with little to no harm. Look at the Maggie Daley park. Look at the River Walk built from TIF funds as pension plan payments were skipped. Follow the money.
The Sanctuary City's days are numbered I'm afraid. Don't fall for the false promises, signed deals, phoney laws, and rules, talk about having rights. They mean nothing.
Even the Bill of Rights.
You want to know about rights? Google 1945 Japan USA and see what happens to that phoney US constitution and bill of rights when you need them the most. How many Japanese people were rounded up and put into camps because of where they were born. There was no right to a fair trial, free speech, etc..etc.. in ya go. Get in the camp.
Yep..let's watch on how Detroit busts the unions and the social contract cuz that's what coming our way.
RAHM IS A FAILURE.
They've been rehabbing 63rd & Halsted Street since Urban Renewal in 1964......nothing will beat the Sears, Wieboldt's and Morris B. Sachs stores that used to be there.
They accept the purple platinum (link).
I heard the new Whole Foods is going in right across the street from the Englwood Starbucks and down the street from Abercrombie & Fitch.
fishy.
By the time this thing is built, it won't be.
Once again, a big press conference, showing Rahm's loyal, wealthy, righteous supporters how kind and beneficent he is, just like the wizard of Oz. Then, later, when the curtain is pulled back, no one will even remember about the food desert and the pretend Whole Foods store mirage that was going to appear there.
I even hear their prices are going to be much lower due to the low income community its being put in.
After the community cannabalises this place store will close in 6 months.
I've seen a link card used at WF a few times already. It all spends the same.
They will have plenty of organic Cheetos and purple drank in stock. Link accepted.
Bullet Hole Foods....
It's called a link card.
It's going to be a Ho Foods, not a Whole Foods.
Organic hot cheetos definately more healthier!
No stores in Garfield Ridge or Mt. Greenwood. That's racist.
TIF= $10,000,000

The plan includes a 10 million dollar tax subsidy from TIF.
This one is a puzzler. Can't figure it out at all. The community has nowhere near the typical demos of where one of these stores open. Rahm must've had some leverage to squeeze them for something. Meanwhile they'll get the feel-good pub for opening in a disadvantaged community, and a huge tax write-off when it closes and is eventually donated to a reverend for use as a community center.
No worries. Supposed to have affordable prices. Do people in Englewood even know what hummus is though? Maybe they'll only sell Flintstone vitamins too, not the $200 bottle of whatever that the detective tried to steal.
::::: 'Anyone want to guess what the incentive was to provide Rahm with this sappy headline ...' ::::
Tiny Dancer promised Whole Foods that 'the city' would provide the Store with $5,000 cash per day -- in small unmarked bills -- which is to be used at each check-out register for Stick-Up Money.
That way, when the store is robbed at gun point every day, which is why there's no businesses in Da Hood now, Whole Foods won't be on the losing end. And to boot, it will comply with the messiah's Federal Guidelines on Redistribution of Wealth to the gibs-me-dat community. It's win-win for everybody.
Well...except for taxpayers, but fuck them.
And they'll be forced to hire residents, most have IR numbers. So who will steal more? The workers or the shoppers?
Perhaps the real (financial) benefit will come from the construction jobs that this extortion will create before the company realizes that it just isn't worth it to be in Englewood; after that reality sets in, we can have another unused structure that can become an eyesore.
Whole Fraud
The Mayor's Office said $10,000,000 in TIF money will be used to build the store. The building will cost $3,500,000 to build.
Chicago Math.
Theyy'll be using their LINK card for groceries. Mybe the yuppies will slowly creep in to the hood.
We suppose they're entitled to do what they like with their own company.................and our money....$10 million bucks from the city...perhaps retired cops without pensions can get a discount there
In the land of walkin' tacos and purple drank, this has to be dumbest idea Ive ever heard...
Whole foods announced they will start selling 40s of Old English 800 and a variety of Cheetos.
Seriously? Out of all the areas on the south side that would appreciate a Whole Foods they decide Englewood. Oh wait, link cards, guaranteed business.
Whole Foods will be right next door to the new Nike and Apple stores. Hermes, Harry Winston Jewelers and Nordstroms will be on the other side of Halsted next to Junebug's Liquors and the M.B. storefront church.
It's all about perception, if the sheeple see they're building a Whhole Foods in Englewood, then the city must be getting nicer !
Whole Pay Check up north, Whole Food Stamp in Da Wood!
whole foods will be raising the prices in the northside hipsters stores...maybe the hipsters could have an moo and oink on the northside
Food desert? Bullshit. There's an Aldi two blocks east on 63rd St. and it sells produce, too.
I worked in 007 for 2 years and now work in 009 on the ghetto border. Are you kidding me? What planet are they on? Who the fuck is going to buy from that place?
When it goes belly-up, and it will, the storefront rev-runds will get their hands on a nearly new building for next to nothing, and turn it into a "community" center.
Lets just put a Barneys Right next to it!
Whole foods should just dig a giant hole and fill it with $1 bills totaling the cost to build and maintain the store for a year and have a gigantic bonfire because this is what is essentially will happen to all the money invested in this ridiculous idea.
What's next a sharper image store next to this mistake.
There are no food deserts outside of rule-of-law deserts
I saw the owner of Whole Foods when this fiasco was announced and a reporter asked something to the effect of:"How are the residents of this community going to afford Whole Foods." The owner could not come up with an answer. So maybe this will be like the Catholic Church, where all of the White Churches kick in to pay for the Black Catholic Churches.
RAHM IS A FAILURE.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.
Your's is the quote of the week, along with having "Safe Passage signs in the Whole Foods store's entrance to the grape soda and Flaming Hots aisle". (in True News)
Truer words were never spoken.
Cranes says there is only $4.8 million available in TIF money in the area. So where is the additional $5.2 million coming from? Another scam/fraud/political favor for profit no doubt. Maybe we can help alleviate the shortage with our pension fund? All in favor..........

This will not work. The money does not add up. Whole foods will lose money.
9/05/2013 12:43:00 AM
And why should anyone give a shit? As long as they carry flamin hots and orange pop and sell cigarettes one at a time. Maybe fried buffalo fish sandwiches too.
We call Whole Foods Whole Pay Check because of their high prices. Out there it will be called Whole Link Card.
if the prices stay the same compared to other whole foods this store will never last. all the englewoodians, regardless of link card, would not eat the food whole foods offers. the prices would have to be significantly cheaper. also, they'll need to spend time and more money trying to educate these fools on organic food/healthy dieting.
There was a report that items sold here will be sold at lower prices to accommodate the neighborhood. What b.s. they already getting it for free. Also this place will have too survive off the college lunch time business and organic flamin hots/ natural grape drank.
"That's why I go to Mariano's."
Mariano's accepts Link.
Love this too:
SNAP Program Income and Benefit Amounts (Spanish Version) - DHS 124S
Spanish? Don't need to speak Engrish to vote and get benefits. We're so fucked.
Whole Foods is going to have to make a significant investment in Loss Prevention, I worked in loss prevention for Jewel in the early 80's @ 6202 S. Halsted. I worked the evening shift there with a team of 4 loss prevention personnel. We averaged no less than 5 apprehensions per man and on the weekends it was closer to a dozen per man.Not to mention the internal theft the store had. The "shrink" was too much for Jewel and they closed that location. Dominick's saw that and didn't even think about going into Englewood. When Whole Foods does open their location, it'll only be a matter of time before they too will close their doors. SMDH.
No way they'll open a store there.
Consider it a large tax write off for whole foods. While they make bank on link card tax money.
What next a Macys or a Breitling Watch store???
oh, it will work. EBT cards swipe at Whole Foods just fine.
just a couple weeks ago, I saw a lady ring up over $400 worth at the Whole Foods on Roosevelt/Canal.
They are building one in park ridge, why isn't that all over the news?
The store is just a front for the swiss cheese factory WF is going to set up in their display windows.
Now if they can just get the lead residue out of the holes....
NC
It's an excuse to raise the LINK card limit. It's evil! We are being robbed and the offenders are smiling at us. Man up bitches.
Are thgey building it in the Retail Store graveyard at 63rd and Halsted, next to the Sears tomb. Whole foods must need a major write off.
I'm a fan of Whole Foods. Their founder, John Mackey, is a capitalist and has some good stuff about how he sees it as a force for good.
It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out. I'd like to believe that it'll provide quality jobs with opportunity. Fingers crossed.

Nobody is a better deputy chief poleece than Leo. He gonna be the Chief of Englewoods someday soon. You will see.
boy the media is really hammering Rahm....
Do not work security for them fuck them they are not on your side and will trick bag your ass in a NY second.
I do not know where you get your information, but I was detailed to the Hospital to sit on the injured Officer for a whole tour last night. Get your facts straight...
"And we're looking a generation NOT A YEAR OR A DECADE, OR TWO DECADES, A GENERATION for the other 68.3% to regain their wealth stolen by investment banking scams, liar loans, credit swaps, foreclosure fraud and REMIC trust fraud.
Not a single banking exec. gone to prison. . ."
Because the masterminds who created the environment for the housing market to implode were all loyal Democrats from Carter and Clinton to Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Even Rahm cashed in by serving on some of the oversight boards that provided zero oversight. If this was a Republican scandal, people would be imprisoned, but the Democrats were only trying to create housing opportunities for those who were unqualified for mortgages and home ownership responsibilities.
Tiffany is next!
MS
The entire “food desert” theory is leftist horseshit that again excuses black misbehavior (obesity, poor care of children) and perpetuates the fairy tales of white and class oppression. Enough North Shore soccer moms hear the phrase being repeated in NPR and before you know it, “food deserts” are scientifically proven problem for which there is only one solution: squeeze more money from the taxpayers to hand over to favored minorities and their handlers (Democratic politicians, leftist institutions and businesses with the political connections).
Whole Foods won’t lose a dime in Englewood since they wouldn’t even dream of such a store placement if the project weren’t subsidized as a guaranteed money maker. The store will be propped up by taxpayers, who will be the only losers in this deal. TIFs, link cards, SNAP freebies -- those provide the bedrock foundation for a luxury food store in the slums.
Hi! It's me, Superintendent Garry McTwitter. Tee-hee! You Chicagoans are so funny! The other night I was on the Internet and saw your Mayor (My boss! Whatta pussy! But don't tell him I told you so!) was announcing that Whole Foods is opening a store, in of all places, ENGLEWOOD! Aaaa-ha-ha-ha-ha! What a screamer! What are the citizens of Englewood going to buy? Organic Grape Drink! Aaa- Haaa_ha-ha! Glutten free Cheetos! Oh shit, I just pissed myself!
Here's a reminder to folks that have tunnel vision . Englewood , roseland and other areas had many grocery stores , Hi-Low,A&P,Jewel Dominicks when the neighborhoods were white working class people.
Stores left because of thefts , robberies , unable to get honest employees to travel in the changing neighborhoods . Nothing racist , just survival . provide link cards with bags of rice , powdered milk , frozen vegetables ,unsweetened cereals and ground beef . Maybe then the slackers will work .
Are you kidding...
This would be the area to buy a lot...
lots of lots...
...and sit on them for about 5 to 10 years.
But I'd bet the Daley Crime Family has a lock on them already.
LINK accepted?
Maybe they'll sell the public horse meat and call it beef like Aldi's did and the Englewood citizens will like it.
There is a reason why Jewel, Dominick's, Kroger, Centrella, Cermack, Pete's Fresh Market, 7-11, Walmart, and Ultra have not built in or have left Englewood. It is the realization that no one can replace the now defunct Moo and Oink!
Earlier, an anonymous poster mentioned the Englewood murder castle of 19th Century (what we now term as a) serial killer Herman Mudgett, aka H.H. Holmes. Some referred to Holmes as Chicago's version of his contemporary Whitehall counterpart "Jack the Ripper".
His dungeon was located on the southwest corner of 63rd and Wallace (not Halsted). Quite the ladies' man, it was there that he used an acid vat and a makeshift crematorium to make his murdered female victim's "disappear".

priceless, absolutely priceless
I work at 018 the kids from Cabrini Green and the Marshall Field Homes eat flammin hots all day long, I never see them eating anything healthy and they have all the Grocerys stores to choose from so dont give me this Food Desert balony.
As a stockholder in Whole Foods (WFM on NASDAQ), co-CEO Walter Robb's "brainstorm" of "expanding" to the hellhole known as Englewood borders on insanity. Predictable hordes of shoplifters and internal thievery will prove that Mr. Robb is delusional. Even if you nail it down, it will be stolen. Those hired for security purposes will even pose a formidable threat to loss prevention.

Abercrombie & Fitch.
Don't you mean, Abercrombie & "Filch" ?
This reminded me of something I observed a couple years ago at the River Forest Whole Foods.
New Year's Eve I was waiting in the checkout line with my girlfriend. In front of us was a couple with their small child and two shopping carts jammed full of food. Sorry, one cart was full of food and the other was full of booze. We watched the male pushing the booze cart dig a fucking LINK card out of his wallet and hand it to the female pushing the food cart in front of him.
I know this type of abuse is common, but to see it firsthand made me sick/pissed off. Still does. What a fucking waste.
Mazy ' is also moving from downtown state street to 63 and halsted. It will be their banner store.
These perisites are on the link (Soul)train for 16 generations whice the last 4 are within 9 years. Grandma' are 32 yoa.
They can do the sould train dance in the aisle of 50 brands of grape pop.
Rahm sending the Whole foods in first, to see if he can ge the yuppies and hipsters to move in a gentrify the neighborhood.
Does the female WC in 025 on midnights EVER work a full tour of duty? She is gone by 0230 every night! Wow must be nice start at 2100 and leave by 0230?? What will she do when she has to swipe in / out? God forbid she wotks a full tour she will just have her pet sergeant swipe for her ... The one who can never stay awake and cries when he has to work the street. Funny how those who work the desk never get a bone and get bitched at for being late though...karma is a bitch
Great idea, right up until the Aldermen and storefront preachers declare that Whole Foods doesn't pay a "living wage" and call for boycotts and strikes (or kickbacks)
More like 'Ho Foods!!!
Seeing a Whole Foods with bullet proof check out windows should be interesting.
Whole foods is still on the hook for their founder's crime of speaking his mind against the liberal mantra of free healthcare.
Aside from that, anytime there's the slightest semblance of normalcy in the wasteland, you need only follow taxpayer's money as it's funneled through the usual dirty hands and then on to some failed program that props up a fake business, a fake school, a fake hospital, a fake housing development, and so on...
No one wants to expose the ugly truths. If you see a normal, healthy community anywhere in the states across the country, you find schools that reach proper performance levels, people who work, families with stable adult leadership, crime levels are low, hospital emergency rooms that don't look like war zones, and young people who aspire to something in life involving more than loud thumping beats, 3rd grade level rhyming, smoking weed, and shooting each other.
Not here. Here you have politicians and reverends always demanding the subsidy that comes from someone else's money in order to pay people to pretend to work at some jobs training program, or prop up a business like this whole foods deal with a grant, or provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, school supplies, backpacks, after school programs, voucher this, utility assistance that, free mobile healthcare command van to chase down people who don't or won't take their future felons for vaccines...
Enough already.
I don't shop at Whole Foods, too expensive. My daughter calls it " whole paycheck". I just can't see it making it in Englewood unless they make some serious changes in the way they usually do business. But, I worked in Englewood for years. The political corruption has always been intense and profitable for the alderman and police commander and in at least one instance, the deputy chief. The local powers in charge always want their share of anything that goes on.
can someone tell me why they dont have a caputo food store in chicago excellent store with decent prices, i shopped at the one in naperville and what a business it does there, maybe rahm can give caputo 10 million dollars to open one in chicago
And they'll be forced to hire residents, most have IR numbers. So who will steal more? The workers or the shoppers?

You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but it will be a huge write-off for Ho Foods.
Remember the good ole days in 011with the slogan,"People who care...Shop at Buddy Bear." Roosevelt and Homan. It be gone too.
(OT) strangely the FOP is not telling us any news about the contract! A good friend of mine is on the fire negotiating committee he showed me in black and white what he cit wants, they want fire companies manning office trucks lowered, the want uniform allowance and their version of duty availability rescinded, and ready the city wants the firefighters to take a 7 1/2 % pay CUT! We are worried about 1 year of possibly no retro, well boys and girls maybe just maybe all the complaining about Mike Shields and the notorious "letter" may be in vain! At least under this old contract we did not lose anything yet!
To the kids talking about giving things up voluntarily to get rid of residency are you really that stupid? Thought you went to college! But then again college today is less than a high school education was not long ago! Give up nothing, don't volunteer anything to give back!
Mike Shields now to you,it seems like your in a den of snakes, watch your back there, the Italian guy there is smarter than he seems in that corner office, be careful!
The prices for all those yuppies at real Whole Foods are going up exponentially to make up for the shrinkage that will occurr in Englewood.
They must be getting a hell of a package of incentives and tax write offs in order to open a store that will sustain major loss and be in the red othwise.
Good news is if you have a gun you can go to whole foods Englewood and get whole food products much cheaper....
Until you return to your car and see you window busted out and Tom Tom missing
just in case nobody knows a p.o. was led away in hancuffs this morning in room #206 daley center for using cell phone, judge gallager.

Shut your trap you piece of shit! People have complained about the Lt. But she is always good to me. Perhaps if you respect her then she will respect you. I know, but it's probably a hard concept for you to understand. You need to stop exposing our problems to the whole world. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Very mean spirited, racist comments; some extremely funny and dead-on, but still mean-spirited. It all sounds good on paper, but I don't believe this will ever happen. It nearly took putting a gun to someone's head to put a Treasure Island in Hyde Park, Englewood is more of a Walmart area, and they go where they know they're going to make money. Cost overruns, delays, protests by Reverend's about minority workers will give Whole Foods a way out; it's all just a dog and pony act.
Speaking of which, Rahm is going to be on Letterman Monday, promoting himself as a viable National Figure!
The Mayor is giving Whole Foods a 10 million dollar gift (tax payer money) to open this store in Englewood.
The ton of money poured into the new Kennedy king college was supposed to be the catalyst for retail development. Oh well another $ 10M for the delevopers seems appropriate.
Ho's and Bitches Market
Why in the world is it going to take two years to build this store? This is not going to happen and everyone involved knows that this is just Kool smoke being blown.

Now, I am having fits imagining the mess when mobs of shoppers, unaccustomed to the bulk food dispensers, spill hundreds of dollars of organic quinoa on the floor...ought to drive some poor store GM to early retirement!
Don't worry about loss prevention. There will be safe passage routes in each isle.

"Whole Foods won’t lose a dime in Englewood since they wouldn’t even dream of such a store placement if the project weren’t subsidized as a guaranteed money maker. The store will be propped up by taxpayers, who will be the only losers in this deal. TIFs, link cards, SNAP freebies -- those provide the bedrock foundation for a luxury food store in the slums."
I hate to say it, but this seems to make sense. So on top of all the other freebies, us taxpayers are running a quasi private-gubmint cooperative food store just so our leaders can say that it works?
God, all of your politicos are making New Orleans look sane . Thanks!
Whole Foods is doing this from some high level extortion from your Mayor's favorite Community Organizer
Can I buy a Folo's beef samich there?
Midway Airport is no longer for sale. The bidding process for the 40 year deal hit the crapper when one of the last two bidders took a hike.
I'm a fan of Whole Foods. Their founder, John Mackey, is a capitalist and has some good stuff about how he sees it as a force for good.
It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out. I'd like to believe that it'll provide quality jobs with opportunity. Fingers crossed.
*************
Are you fucking kidding me? This is a quid pro quo deal. The only way they go in there is following promises as someone else said, tax relief, free land somewhere else. If it was a viable market, Jewel would be in there. It's the same as that mall at 119th west of 57. You think that Pet Smart wanted to put a store there? Like the community there is buying dog beds and fancy chew toys? Pet smart....gone. Believe me, part of every dollar spent at any Whole Foods will be subsidizing this Englewood store. And why not? Free cell phones, three meals at schools, paid to watch kids walk to school....if you are a Comcast customer part of your bill supports free wi-fi, it never stops.
I'll tell you what's next. That bike sharing outfit will have to hand out debit cards to poor people. the world of hand outs and hands sticking out will never end.

The short answer is Chicago is not business-friendly, especially not for the small family business. Too many permits, fees, hoops to jump through and petty demands.
Better to build your business a few hundred feet outside the city, where you're appreciated.
Instead of wasting the money on Whole Foods, why not spend it having the Chicago police deliver free fruits and vegetables to the black community?
Good for Englewood and the residents.

F'ing awesome response!
It's classic "magical thinking" - put a Whole Foods in the community, and they will become civilized and upscale.
I got the September FOP newsletter today. Of note is the trial notices for upcoming hearings/trial dates of the scumbags charged with murdering Chicago Police Officers.
Of the 11 on trial (ELEVEN!) I'd say many, if not most, are from Englewood.
Can you believe that? 11 pieces of scum on trial for killing cops! Where else, other than in Afghanistan or Iraq, is there that kind of bloodshed by law enforcement?
And our idiot Mayor thinks it would be a boon to the community to put a Whole Foods there?
He is so far off base there is just no way to adequately describe how ridiculous that idea is. The Englewood train is not merely off the tracks, it is most of the way down the mountain at breakneck speeds.
A completely broken dysfunctional society and he is wasting the time and tax money to put an upscale grocery store there. Someone please come up with a suitable analogy, spats on a pig doesn't cut it.
The general citizen of Chicago and surrounding suburbs just has no idea how completely fucked up the community of Englewood is. It's bad there, real real bad. At least in Iraq they are fighting over which sect of islam is better. In Englewood there is no telling what the hell is going on, society has simply ceased to function there.
The situation is critical, some drastic measures must be taken. I feel we will have armed combat in the streets happening soon on a scale not seen outside of a war zone.
And sadly, stupidly, they have loads of brand new raw recruits there, working alongside other brand new raw recruits. Not a good situation. Not at all. No one has any solutions to that place. Hell, few even acknowledge the depth of the problem.
If you are a recruit working in the ghetto, please take care of yourself and your partner. Nothing else matters, go home safe after your tour, that is the only thing you must do without fail.
Everybody relax, there will be a 007 district sub at the Whole Foods station complete with a lock up; weapon safes that don't work, printers that don't work, computers that are slow to work, computers that don't connect with the printers, no paper to be found, and no inventory bags.
(OT) rahm shut down again, no midway lease deal "for the children" talk about an absolute failure yep that's rahm!
****off topic but you might want to post on this SCC. ok, sorry if it gets confusing but try to keep up. The city begins its game of Chess with contract time. All of a sudden in the news you see that Emmanuel puts a halt on privatizing midway airport. The city who knows that the contract is eventually going to go to an arbitrator for final determination of our wages etc will use the cities financial position to determine a financial raise. They know that the FOP is going to use a windfall from midway privatization and a possible Chicago casino to boost Chicago revenue and cash on hand so the city cant cry broke. well the city knows that the fop is going to do this and they know that it could sway an arbitrator to give a decent raise. Without those two things the fop will have nothing financially to lean on. The city can and will cry broke and an arbitrator will rule in the cities favor to give us a next to nothing financial raise. Now watch, after the contract is signed and approved you will see the midway issue pop up again and the recently quiet Chicago casino pop back up. sneaky rahm, very sneaky. but we know what your doing.
Laughed my ass off the other day listening to Roe & Roeper playing a tape of Todd Stroger saying Food Desserts over and over again talking about a county program to bring "good foods" into the area of the city that are "Food Desserts"
I wonder what is going to happen to the people who will soon be walking around with their new Gold iPhones?
To Northside, there is a book written by one of HH Holmes grand (or greatgrand) sons. I believe it's called Bloodstains. He proposes that Holmes WAS Jack the Ripper. The times that Holmes was unaccounted for in the US coincide with the times that the Rippers murders occurred.
"Believe me, part of every dollar spent at any Whole Foods will be subsidizing this Englewood store."
Whole foods isn't a charity.
"Are you fucking kidding me? This is a quid pro quo deal. The only way they go in there is following promises as someone else said, tax relief, free land somewhere else. If it was a viable market, Jewel would be in there. "
The only reason Whole Foods would lose money on this deal is if they believe that by doing so they will be able to get more money out of upper middle class progressives.
But we all know it's a quid-pro-quo and Whole Foods expects to make money off their contract with Rahm. The only question other than what they're getting out of it is how long Rahm is demanding that this location stay open for. Probably for at least two years, so they can both bask in the publicity until everyone forgets about it, then it can quietly shut down after the next election?
10:13--I agree with you, but...
The Mayor is trying to bring some sense of normalcy into their lives. By putting a W/Foods in their ruined neighborhood, it might make some of them feel that they can shop and live like we do.
It might seem to most of us (who don't come from poverty) as folly or a waste of money, but what if it works for just a few?
Can't we let our poor feel a little better, for a short part of their day.
If it fails, so bet it, who cares?
It's not a dig against you, its just an attempt to do something good for them.
Give the good poor a break.
Please.
I don't need to preach to you all, you see it every day.

For a good read, check out Erik Larson's NYT best-seller "The Devil In The White City".

Devil in the White City is a sometimes tedious, fictionalized, not always accurate account of the serial murderers's exploits. It's entertainment, but not all that well written.
Hopefully, the second option is better. Will look for it.

Maybe then the slackers will work
Also these chains as well as the Independant stores were shaken down by certain Reverands and street gangs.

From an Old Detective...
Historically, one of the Detectives on the desk in the Area units also use to take the photos. This was in the pre-union days.
Even before that, historically, the department employed civilian photographers. At times, there were requests for "official" CPD photos of old mob gangsters like Frank Giancana and so forth. The only "official" photos in the files were line-up pictures from the 1930's on black and white large format negatives. The pictures were in sharp detail of six or seven of these wise guys as young men in there mid-twenties on a stage in front of a dark curtain. They were dressed in rich overcoats, fine suits and snappy fedoras. You might find those pictures on-line if you look.
Stay Safe. Keep your flash powder dry.

While we all appreciate the history lesson, it means nothing by today's standards.
For an detective untrained in evidence recovery to take line-up photos and then to also be the guy testifying against someone's freedom means DETECTIVE AND CITY ARE SUED BEYOND RECOGNITION DUE TO THE FACT THAT A THIRD PARTY, UNINVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION DID NOT RECOVER PROPERLY ADJUSTED PHOTOS.
This is the difference between retired old timers and still on the job old timers.

Your altruistic dreams of helping out the ghetto rats in Chicago is nothing more than a cover story for a politician.
Making the animal "feel better" because they "think" they're living like "we" do is the most piss poor excuse I've heard yet next to reparations for the animal.
These fucks won't be able to afford the prices at this store. If whole foods lowered the prices in the ghetto, actual taxpayers would be suing them for price gouging in decent neighborhoods.
So, assuming these fools keep prices the same as other whole foods, the animal won't make it out the door with enough garbage food to last them a week.
Won't the feel just like one of "us" then.
Grow up and take off the ruby slippers alice, whole foods will disappear from this location within 2 years either by the animal destroying it or by real people suing the fuck out of them for price gouging.

You meant cars, didn't you?
Running lineups is one of the most fucked up tasks of being a dick.
Fillers are bonded out at record pace.
Watch commanders won't transport bodies across the city (but demand you come flying out on their bullshit requests.
The E T s are short handed, and often we are waiting hours for them to show up and taken the lineup photos.
Meanwhile the watch commanders want their fillers back so they can I Bond them and scoot them on their merry fucking way.
Dicks taking line up photos is only to speed a fucking slow process along.
It will take two years to build because all the materials will be stolt each night after the workers leave!
"For an detective untrained in evidence recovery to take line-up photos"
What were you doing? Sleeping in Dick's school?
Taking line-up photos aint that hard. Read the order.
If you can't get the bodies before they are I-bonded, do a photo line-up.
You don't need another person to do the line-up pix. Just someone that knows what to do. The Arson dicks photo and process their own scenes with digital cameras.
Can't we let our poor feel a little better?
Maybe this sounds hard to understand today but feeling better when you're poor doesn't come from making others pay your way.
Also, there's this false assumption that I never knew poverty.
My father came from Mexico in the forties to work the farms as a brasero for near nothing. He heard there was factory work and better pay in Chicago and from the fifties through the time they shut his factory down he managed to provide a sense of dignity by example to his family that didn't come by way of how much money he made, seeing as how we barely got by, didn't have much, and did more than our share of shopping in the 'generic' isle.
His pride wouldn't let him take food stamps through strikes, layoffs, and finally a complete shut down of the plant. I know this sounds crazy now, but my mom wasn't even allowed to work!
Instead, we heard speeches about how great this country was because a man was free to figure it out on his own, proving his worth with his feet to pound the pavement, his bare hands, his back and his mind to do the rest.
He proceeded to take absolutely any job he could find, no matter the distance, the hours, the conditions, or his age.
He was nuts about beer, baseball, and this country.
Stop making excuses for people who only demand, expect, and complain.
There is a reason Bill Clinton got rid of Rahm and there's a reason this imp of a president got rid of Rahm put the puzzle together.

It is not hard to figure. TD 9.5 is an ambitious, cut throat, pos. Sometimes they need him around and sometimes they need him gone. No secret. It's politics. A very filthy, disingenuous, chess game.
Funny jokes, but seriously, there is a major grocery store called Food 4 Less in the same district. They seldom call for shoplifting, and have been turning a profit consistently since opening. Chances are, "Ho", "BulletHole", "Sole", and whatever other funny names you give them, will do the same.
May not seem like it to a jaded copper, but the majority of Englewood is working class, or retired people. Don't let the small percentage of sub-humanoids label the entire community.
I'm sure they'll employ more checkout cashiers by realizing "self checkout" lanes won't work too good...ya know what I mean?!
