Whole Foods in Englewood?

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel sought Wednesday to reshape the debate over his efforts to shrink the city's so-called food deserts by announcing plans to open a Whole Foods Market in the impoverished Englewood neighborhood three years from now.

The announcement that the upscale grocer was going to a ZIP code where population is declining and the median household income hovers below $20,000 came one week after a Tribune story showed Emanuel has fallen short of his goals to bring fresh foods and vegetables to low-income neighborhoods with limited access to such staples.
A failing/dying neighborhood where the economic realities fall far outside Whole Foods target demographics? Makes PERFECT sense!

On the bright side, there aren't many folks (or people) who will be shoplifting heads of organic lettuce. Anyone want to guess what the incentive was to provide Rahm with this sappy headline and opportunity to claim he's reducing so-called "food deserts?" Maybe a few extra stores to open up in the city or permit/licensing waivers?

Another sign Chicago is following Detroit down the tubes..

Black Homeownership Collapses As "Livable, Affordable Housing" Slips Out Of Reach

President Obama's speech last during the 50th anniversary of MLK may seem sadly ironic now. As he noted, "Dr. King explained that the goals of African-Americans were identical to working people of all races: decent wages, fair working conditions, livable housing..." but the facts are that, as Bloomberg reports, while, for most Americans, the real estate crash is finally behind them and personal wealth is back where it was in the boom; For blacks in the U.S., 18 years of economic progress has vanished, with a rebound in housing slipping further out of reach and the unemployment rate almost twice that of whites.

The homeownership rate for blacks fell from 50% during the housing bubble to 43% in the second quarter, the lowest since 1995. The rate for whites stopped falling two years ago, settling at about 73%, only 3 percentage points below the 2004 peak.

As Rev. Alvin Love, who knew Obama in the 80s notes, "it's going to take a generation to get back to the point where homeownership can build wealth in this community."

. . .

The median wealth of white households was 20 times that of blacks and 18 times the Hispanic rate, a record gap in data going back three decades that is twice the pre-recession size, according to a 2011 Pew study

According to the US census Chicago's White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, population in 2010 = 31.7%

And we're looking a generation NOT A YEAR OR A DECADE, OR TWO DECADES, A GENERATION for the other 68.3% to regain their wealth stolen by investment banking scams, liar loans, credit swaps, foreclosure fraud and REMIC trust fraud.

Not a single banking exec. gone to prison and that makes Garry's Broken Window talk BULLSHIT!

Anyways...There went the tax base.

We see it already Cutting CPD. Cutting educations.

Ahhh But the mayors friends and relatives escape with little to no harm. Look at the Maggie Daley park. Look at the River Walk built from TIF funds as pension plan payments were skipped. Follow the money.

The Sanctuary City's days are numbered I'm afraid. Don't fall for the false promises, signed deals, phoney laws, and rules, talk about having rights. They mean nothing.

Even the Bill of Rights.

You want to know about rights? Google 1945 Japan USA and see what happens to that phoney US constitution and bill of rights when you need them the most. How many Japanese people were rounded up and put into camps because of where they were born. There was no right to a fair trial, free speech, etc..etc.. in ya go. Get in the camp.

Yep..let's watch on how Detroit busts the unions and the social contract cuz that's what coming our way.

RAHM IS A FAILURE.

This one is a puzzler. Can't figure it out at all. The community has nowhere near the typical demos of where one of these stores open. Rahm must've had some leverage to squeeze them for something. Meanwhile they'll get the feel-good pub for opening in a disadvantaged community, and a huge tax write-off when it closes and is eventually donated to a reverend for use as a community center.

Tiny Dancer promised Whole Foods that 'the city' would provide the Store with $5,000 cash per day -- in small unmarked bills -- which is to be used at each check-out register for Stick-Up Money.

That way, when the store is robbed at gun point every day, which is why there's no businesses in Da Hood now, Whole Foods won't be on the losing end. And to boot, it will comply with the messiah's Federal Guidelines on Redistribution of Wealth to the gibs-me-dat community. It's win-win for everybody.

Whole Foods is going to have to make a significant investment in Loss Prevention, I worked in loss prevention for Jewel in the early 80's @ 6202 S. Halsted. I worked the evening shift there with a team of 4 loss prevention personnel. We averaged no less than 5 apprehensions per man and on the weekends it was closer to a dozen per man.Not to mention the internal theft the store had. The "shrink" was too much for Jewel and they closed that location. Dominick's saw that and didn't even think about going into Englewood. When Whole Foods does open their location, it'll only be a matter of time before they too will close their doors. SMDH.

Because the masterminds who created the environment for the housing market to implode were all loyal Democrats from Carter and Clinton to Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Even Rahm cashed in by serving on some of the oversight boards that provided zero oversight. If this was a Republican scandal, people would be imprisoned, but the Democrats were only trying to create housing opportunities for those who were unqualified for mortgages and home ownership responsibilities.

The entire “food desert” theory is leftist horseshit that again excuses black misbehavior (obesity, poor care of children) and perpetuates the fairy tales of white and class oppression. Enough North Shore soccer moms hear the phrase being repeated in NPR and before you know it, “food deserts” are scientifically proven problem for which there is only one solution: squeeze more money from the taxpayers to hand over to favored minorities and their handlers (Democratic politicians, leftist institutions and businesses with the political connections).

Whole Foods won’t lose a dime in Englewood since they wouldn’t even dream of such a store placement if the project weren’t subsidized as a guaranteed money maker. The store will be propped up by taxpayers, who will be the only losers in this deal. TIFs, link cards, SNAP freebies -- those provide the bedrock foundation for a luxury food store in the slums.

Stores left because of thefts , robberies , unable to get honest employees to travel in the changing neighborhoods . Nothing racist , just survival . provide link cards with bags of rice , powdered milk , frozen vegetables ,unsweetened cereals and ground beef . Maybe then the slackers will work .

Earlier, an anonymous poster mentioned the Englewood murder castle of 19th Century (what we now term as a) serial killer Herman Mudgett, aka H.H. Holmes. Some referred to Holmes as Chicago's version of his contemporary Whitehall counterpart "Jack the Ripper".

His dungeon was located on the southwest corner of 63rd and Wallace (not Halsted). Quite the ladies' man, it was there that he used an acid vat and a makeshift crematorium to make his murdered female victim's "disappear".

For a good read, check out Erik Larson's NYT best-seller "The Devil In The White City".

This reminded me of something I observed a couple years ago at the River Forest Whole Foods.

New Year's Eve I was waiting in the checkout line with my girlfriend. In front of us was a couple with their small child and two shopping carts jammed full of food. Sorry, one cart was full of food and the other was full of booze. We watched the male pushing the booze cart dig a fucking LINK card out of his wallet and hand it to the female pushing the food cart in front of him.

I know this type of abuse is common, but to see it firsthand made me sick/pissed off. Still does. What a fucking waste.

Whole foods is still on the hook for their founder's crime of speaking his mind against the liberal mantra of free healthcare.

Aside from that, anytime there's the slightest semblance of normalcy in the wasteland, you need only follow taxpayer's money as it's funneled through the usual dirty hands and then on to some failed program that props up a fake business, a fake school, a fake hospital, a fake housing development, and so on...

No one wants to expose the ugly truths. If you see a normal, healthy community anywhere in the states across the country, you find schools that reach proper performance levels, people who work, families with stable adult leadership, crime levels are low, hospital emergency rooms that don't look like war zones, and young people who aspire to something in life involving more than loud thumping beats, 3rd grade level rhyming, smoking weed, and shooting each other.

Not here. Here you have politicians and reverends always demanding the subsidy that comes from someone else's money in order to pay people to pretend to work at some jobs training program, or prop up a business like this whole foods deal with a grant, or provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, school supplies, backpacks, after school programs, voucher this, utility assistance that, free mobile healthcare command van to chase down people who don't or won't take their future felons for vaccines...
Enough already.

I don't shop at Whole Foods, too expensive. My daughter calls it " whole paycheck". I just can't see it making it in Englewood unless they make some serious changes in the way they usually do business. But, I worked in Englewood for years. The political corruption has always been intense and profitable for the alderman and police commander and in at least one instance, the deputy chief. The local powers in charge always want their share of anything that goes on.

We are worried about 1 year of possibly no retro, well boys and girls maybe just maybe all the complaining about Mike Shields and the notorious "letter" may be in vain! At least under this old contract we did not lose anything yet!
To the kids talking about giving things up voluntarily to get rid of residency are you really that stupid? Thought you went to college! But then again college today is less than a high school education was not long ago! Give up nothing, don't volunteer anything to give back!

It nearly took putting a gun to someone's head to put a Treasure Island in Hyde Park, Englewood is more of a Walmart area, and they go where they know they're going to make money. Cost overruns, delays, protests by Reverend's about minority workers will give Whole Foods a way out; it's all just a dog and pony act.

Give Whole Foods enough incentives and stroke the CEO's ego enough about how he'll be saving the underclass and of course he bit.

Rahm said all the proceeds from existing TIF funds, speed-cameras and the new casino to be built in Englewood will go to bail out the Police Pension Fund and bring up the department strength back to 13,500.

McStreetlights just got an honorary accounting degree from the CPS.

The Pentagon has ordered a thousand of those "Safe Passage" signs and reports that IED explosions are down 23% from this time last year.

The store will be propped up by taxpayers, who will be the only losers in this deal. TIFs, link cards, SNAP freebies -- those provide the bedrock foundation for a luxury food store in the slums."

I hate to say it, but this seems to make sense. So on top of all the other freebies, us taxpayers are running a quasi private-gubmint cooperative food store just so our leaders can say that it works?

I got the September FOP newsletter today. Of note is the trial notices for upcoming hearings/trial dates of the scumbags charged with murdering Chicago Police Officers.

Of the 11 on trial (ELEVEN!) I'd say many, if not most, are from Englewood.

Can you believe that? 11 pieces of scum on trial for killing cops! Where else, other than in Afghanistan or Iraq, is there that kind of bloodshed by law enforcement?

And our idiot Mayor thinks it would be a boon to the community to put a Whole Foods there?

He is so far off base there is just no way to adequately describe how ridiculous that idea is. The Englewood train is not merely off the tracks, it is most of the way down the mountain at breakneck speeds.

A completely broken dysfunctional society and he is wasting the time and tax money to put an upscale grocery store there. Someone please come up with a suitable analogy, spats on a pig doesn't cut it.

The general citizen of Chicago and surrounding suburbs just has no idea how completely fucked up the community of Englewood is. It's bad there, real real bad. At least in Iraq they are fighting over which sect of islam is better. In Englewood there is no telling what the hell is going on, society has simply ceased to function there.

The situation is critical, some drastic measures must be taken. I feel we will have armed combat in the streets happening soon on a scale not seen outside of a war zone.

And sadly, stupidly, they have loads of brand new raw recruits there, working alongside other brand new raw recruits. Not a good situation. Not at all. No one has any solutions to that place. Hell, few even acknowledge the depth of the problem.

If you are a recruit working in the ghetto, please take care of yourself and your partner. Nothing else matters, go home safe after your tour, that is the only thing you must do without fail.

****off topic but you might want to post on this SCC. ok, sorry if it gets confusing but try to keep up. The city begins its game of Chess with contract time. All of a sudden in the news you see that Emmanuel puts a halt on privatizing midway airport. The city who knows that the contract is eventually going to go to an arbitrator for final determination of our wages etc will use the cities financial position to determine a financial raise. They know that the FOP is going to use a windfall from midway privatization and a possible Chicago casino to boost Chicago revenue and cash on hand so the city cant cry broke. well the city knows that the fop is going to do this and they know that it could sway an arbitrator to give a decent raise. Without those two things the fop will have nothing financially to lean on. The city can and will cry broke and an arbitrator will rule in the cities favor to give us a next to nothing financial raise. Now watch, after the contract is signed and approved you will see the midway issue pop up again and the recently quiet Chicago casino pop back up. sneaky rahm, very sneaky. but we know what your doing.

Whole foods isn't a charity.

"Are you fucking kidding me? This is a quid pro quo deal. The only way they go in there is following promises as someone else said, tax relief, free land somewhere else. If it was a viable market, Jewel would be in there. "

The only reason Whole Foods would lose money on this deal is if they believe that by doing so they will be able to get more money out of upper middle class progressives.

But we all know it's a quid-pro-quo and Whole Foods expects to make money off their contract with Rahm. The only question other than what they're getting out of it is how long Rahm is demanding that this location stay open for. Probably for at least two years, so they can both bask in the publicity until everyone forgets about it, then it can quietly shut down after the next election?

The Mayor is trying to bring some sense of normalcy into their lives. By putting a W/Foods in their ruined neighborhood, it might make some of them feel that they can shop and live like we do.

It might seem to most of us (who don't come from poverty) as folly or a waste of money, but what if it works for just a few?

Can't we let our poor feel a little better, for a short part of their day.

If it fails, so bet it, who cares?

It's not a dig against you, its just an attempt to do something good for them.

Give the good poor a break.

Devil in the White City is a sometimes tedious, fictionalized, not always accurate account of the serial murderers's exploits. It's entertainment, but not all that well written.
Hopefully, the second option is better. Will look for it.

Here's a reminder to folks that have tunnel vision . Englewood , roseland and other areas had many grocery stores , Hi-Low,A&P,Jewel Dominicks when the neighborhoods were white working class people.
Stores left because of thefts , robberies , unable to get honest employees to travel in the changing neighborhoods . Nothing racist , just survival . provide link cards with bags of rice , powdered milk , frozen vegetables ,unsweetened cereals and ground beef . Maybe then the slackers will work
Also these chains as well as the Independant stores were shaken down by certain Reverands and street gangs.

From an Old Detective...

Historically, one of the Detectives on the desk in the Area units also use to take the photos. This was in the pre-union days.

Even before that, historically, the department employed civilian photographers. At times, there were requests for "official" CPD photos of old mob gangsters like Frank Giancana and so forth. The only "official" photos in the files were line-up pictures from the 1930's on black and white large format negatives. The pictures were in sharp detail of six or seven of these wise guys as young men in there mid-twenties on a stage in front of a dark curtain. They were dressed in rich overcoats, fine suits and snappy fedoras. You might find those pictures on-line if you look.

Stay Safe. Keep your flash powder dry.

Great idea, right up until the Aldermen and storefront preachers declare that Whole Foods doesn't pay a "living wage" and call for boycotts and strikes (or kickbacks)

Where do you think they get there turkeys they give away for the holidays.

Thank the baby boomers. They coddled their own children and turned them into selfish young adults that think they should succeed with minimal effort. Now they've legislated more coddling to the whole nation. Baby boomers ruined the world with their shortsighted financial and social policies.

**************

While we all appreciate the history lesson, it means nothing by today's standards.

For an detective untrained in evidence recovery to take line-up photos and then to also be the guy testifying against someone's freedom means DETECTIVE AND CITY ARE SUED BEYOND RECOGNITION DUE TO THE FACT THAT A THIRD PARTY, UNINVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION DID NOT RECOVER PROPERLY ADJUSTED PHOTOS.

This is the difference between retired old timers and still on the job old timers.

We're aware of the basis behind the lawsuits we get hit with, and we prefer to ensure our own financial safety over saving McFuckhead a dollar so he can fuck us back when the lawsuit comes down on us.

The Mayor is trying to bring some sense of normalcy into their lives. By putting a W/Foods in their ruined neighborhood, it might make some of them feel that they can shop and live like we do.
****************

Save the sales pitch pal.

Your altruistic dreams of helping out the ghetto rats in Chicago is nothing more than a cover story for a politician.

Making the animal "feel better" because they "think" they're living like "we" do is the most piss poor excuse I've heard yet next to reparations for the animal.

These fucks won't be able to afford the prices at this store. If whole foods lowered the prices in the ghetto, actual taxpayers would be suing them for price gouging in decent neighborhoods.

So, assuming these fools keep prices the same as other whole foods, the animal won't make it out the door with enough garbage food to last them a week.

Won't the feel just like one of "us" then.

Grow up and take off the ruby slippers alice, whole foods will disappear from this location within 2 years either by the animal destroying it or by real people suing the fuck out of them for price gouging.

Running lineups is one of the most fucked up tasks of being a dick.
Fillers are bonded out at record pace.
Watch commanders won't transport bodies across the city (but demand you come flying out on their bullshit requests.
The E T s are short handed, and often we are waiting hours for them to show up and taken the lineup photos.
Meanwhile the watch commanders want their fillers back so they can I Bond them and scoot them on their merry fucking way.
Dicks taking line up photos is only to speed a fucking slow process along.

What were you doing? Sleeping in Dick's school?

Taking line-up photos aint that hard. Read the order.

If you can't get the bodies before they are I-bonded, do a photo line-up.

You don't need another person to do the line-up pix. Just someone that knows what to do. The Arson dicks photo and process their own scenes with digital cameras.

Can't we let our poor feel a little better?

Maybe this sounds hard to understand today but feeling better when you're poor doesn't come from making others pay your way.

Also, there's this false assumption that I never knew poverty.
My father came from Mexico in the forties to work the farms as a brasero for near nothing. He heard there was factory work and better pay in Chicago and from the fifties through the time they shut his factory down he managed to provide a sense of dignity by example to his family that didn't come by way of how much money he made, seeing as how we barely got by, didn't have much, and did more than our share of shopping in the 'generic' isle.

His pride wouldn't let him take food stamps through strikes, layoffs, and finally a complete shut down of the plant. I know this sounds crazy now, but my mom wasn't even allowed to work!

Instead, we heard speeches about how great this country was because a man was free to figure it out on his own, proving his worth with his feet to pound the pavement, his bare hands, his back and his mind to do the rest.
He proceeded to take absolutely any job he could find, no matter the distance, the hours, the conditions, or his age.

He was nuts about beer, baseball, and this country.

Stop making excuses for people who only demand, expect, and complain.

Funny jokes, but seriously, there is a major grocery store called Food 4 Less in the same district. They seldom call for shoplifting, and have been turning a profit consistently since opening. Chances are, "Ho", "BulletHole", "Sole", and whatever other funny names you give them, will do the same.

May not seem like it to a jaded copper, but the majority of Englewood is working class, or retired people. Don't let the small percentage of sub-humanoids label the entire community.
