Rahm Raising Taxes on Everything

The standard fallback position for every single democrat - and starting position, now that we think about it:
  • Chicago’s cable television customers will see a modest increase in their monthly bills, thanks to a modified amusement tax exemption tied to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2014 budget.

To raise $9 million for enhanced cultural programming and chip away at a $338.7 million shortfall, Emanuel wants to increase — from 4 percent to 6 percent — the amusement tax tacked on to monthly cable bills.

Chicago’s two-tiered amusement tax was increased by 1 percent in 2005 and by 1 percent again in 2009. It now stands at 5 percent for mid-sized venues and 9 percent for large sporting events. The lower tax rate applies to live theatrical, musical and cultural performances in venues with more than 750 seats. Smaller theaters are exempt.

Until now, cable customers have enjoyed a 5 percent exemption and paid just 4 percent. Under Emanuel’s plan, the exemption will drop to 3 percent, forcing cable customers to pay a 6 percent amusement tax.
"...enhanced cultural programing"? Again, government sticking its hand into our pockets for endeavors that cannot succeed on their own. How about just lining out that particular item and maybe funding things necessary to a fully functioning municipality?

but rahm says the budget has been balanced three years in a row now.

how is that possible when cpd's o/t budget has already been blown out.

...we would guess that one would just take the things that are over budget -- out of the budget -- rename them and call them something else.

like public workers pensions that haven't been paid into properly for example.

or like acting like tif money and tax revenues are not fungible.

the corporate run media eats this shit up. omg the budget is balanced so they say. meanwhile...over 50 schools closed. jails filled with mental patients as local mental health clinics have been shut down. etc..etc..

You mean it's all free, that's what Rham said! And he wants to enroll 15000 under privileged kids who are Medicaid eligible too. Let's all drain the system at once. Free eye care! Nothing's free. But that word gets a lot of votes. "free" care my ass. We'll be paying for all there cavities next while the parents let them eat corner store garbage. How about a Nike Airforce1, air Jordan's tax. that alone will fill that budget gap. Been to houses with no baby crib, yet all those orange boxes in the closet?

I don't find anything amusing about this tax increase, or any other for that matter. I'm about to get holes in my pockets. Hell, then he'll just increase the thread tax.

People elect and re-elect democrats to do what they do best. Raise taxes and spending. Besides all money should belong to one level of government or another. Left in the pockets of the citizens, they only waste $$ on frivolous self centered things. Government will spend the $$ for the good of all.

Another reason for retirees to add onto their letter of reasons why they can't afford to pay their own healthcare. If Rahm wants people to reside in this city, which some retirees are still willing to do, then give them health insurance - at reasonable rates.

Rember Gery Chico predicted it.
He called it the Rahm Tax.
He will continue to raise taxes to balance the budget.
Any politician that says, that s(he) would not raise taxes to balance any budget is a fucking liar.
In this case all of them.
But is no monies, right Rahm?
What about the playground that you are building at Ravenswood school, for over a million $$$$.
How about putting an air conditioner
instead? it's already a playground on site.

We 'ridded' our-selves from cable TV ...didn't hurt a bit..gave us more freedom to say "We quit"!!!! Won't give the big guys the satisfaction of taking more of our dollars than necessary.

Emanuel will cost us out of this city. He'll take everything we can "Give". Grams and Gramps will move to Indiana or less costlier states, leaving the Kids and Grans to fend for them-selves money wise cause they will be stuck with city jobs and being forced to pay the bounty from old, long dead Politicians who stole from the pot of public accountability. Its all so twisted.

Went down to the University of Illinois at Champaign to see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform. Front row seats $50, travel time 2hrs, hotel w/2 meals and 3 free drinks, $100, going to see the CSO and avoiding all of ChiRahms fees and hassles-PRICELESS! Total tab was far cheaper (for 2) than going into the city and no hassles. Paid zero entertainment tax.

He just shows he is a common thief with money!

Steal from rich and middle class and give to entitled, no good tax paying bustout losers, who should NOT get a penny!

Okay...pay attention Rahm! Sell the naming rights to McCormick Place. It'll get millions per year. Also, no one gives a damn about DePaul B-Ball. DePaul can cut its own deal to play at Loyola or UIC, owners of adequate but underused facilities. It ain't rocket science Rahm.

So you want to jack up my cable bill.

You already jacked up my city sticker.

You jacked up my water bill.

You want to jack up others peoples smokes.

You already jacked up my (fill in the blank).

You want to cut my pension.

You threaten to double my taxes.

You allowed the C.P.D. to dwindle to dangerously low numbers.

You want to stop paying the city's promised portion of the health premium for retirees that have bled for this fine city.

And you think I'm going to stay here in the city I was raised in and pay a king's ransom?

Think again Mayor.

The city sold the Skyway, but did it retain the 'naming rights' to it? Can they be sold? The Illinois Sports Authority sold the naming right of Sox Park to Cellular One. Can the city sell the naming rights to high schools (Army, NasCar, Verizon)? The Navy and Marines spend millions on TV commercials and recruiting efforts. Does the city get anything from Uncle Sam for 'NAVY' Pier. If the residents are expected to pay, then everybody should pay to keep this city going.

Wake up, all negotiations concerning any casino being built have said the revenue will go where? You wont guess it but for education, the CPS. Quinn already has said that and stated that would be a requirement. Citizens eat that shit up. For the children and the future of America, education in Chicago

So that means all the money the City was spending 'for the children' before the casino money kicked in could now be spent FOR THE PENSIONS.

Bottom line is, if the casinos bring in additional income, the income, or the EQUIVALENT of that amount of income, is extra money the City never had before. So that extra dollar amount can now go into the pension funds, where it belonged all along.
