Wow! Promoted 30 sergeants out of 11,000 officers. Baby steps, but better then nothing.
The thing I don't get about merit is that with this dept it's shroud in secrecy. If you made it merit, and legitimately through your hard work day in day out on the streets, then stand up and say it. Be proud you chosen on your work ethic and the dept should openly post such merit names so others know who to emulate and what to strive for to get a merit spot. But, this dept turns merit into a deep dark secret that even the guys that are made by merit are ashamed to admit it. It's got such a negative connotation that goes along with it. The only way I see to turn it around and have officers start believing in the merit process is to come out and say who is merit. Otherwise the secrecy lends to everyone thinking it's not on the up and up. Which history has told us it hasn't been. That's my best promotion advice to McCarthy.
To think there's 9 guys in that Sgt class that took the spots of someone who studied their butt off for that seat. Just not right.
They should a class of just merit guys and make it the very last class before they tear the list down. There's no reason these merit guys should have seniority over guys off the list. There's a merit guy who's been a sgt for over 6 years collecting all that extra money and seniority while a
guy who actually studied and made it legit is just earning his stripes now and is low man. Tell me that's not wrong.

We did it to ourselves - everyday people came on this site and ripped Jody Weis. Weis was clearly the best Superintedent on this job in the last 18 years. The fact that Weis posted the merit list and who nominated that person was the best policy. Weis also changed the work schedule from. 6-2 to 4-2.
But some made a name for themselves ripping Weia on this board. Thanks

As someone said, at least J-FLED listed the MERIT promotions as well as the name of the exempt that put him in.
The officer from 015 may be well deserving however he is merit.
He has been attempting to be promoted for years under different exams and different bosses to make sergeant under the merit process.
Why can't people have some pride and attempt to make it legit.

At least NOW the sergeant's union is given the entire list of how sergeant's did in RANKING ORDER for the Lieutenant's exam.
It was part of the settlement in the 2007 lieutenant's exam lawsuit.
So there is a way to know who is a FRAUD merit hack.

Anyone who says they are in the know is full of it. Being in the know is about as accurate as the weather forcecast. The forecast is good for 24hrs and then changes. Same thing with HQ.

I know someone who made that list legitimately. She studied her little buns off. Along the way, she had to deal with the heartache of seeing other people jump over her via merit. She was right on the edge and the department came out with a list. Thankfully she was on it. I won't mention her name specifically because in my station there are some people who have it in for her and the minute I mention her name, those bitter assholes will talk shit.
You have to love how some people just are so bitter. You have nothing better to do than mention how a person on the list is connected to someone. How they didn't earn their spot. Look, the bottom line is they are on the list and you are not fucktards! If someone made it via merit then that is ok.

the discipline on this job went flush down the toilet--- it happened because of lack of adequate supervision--- one sgt cannot log 18 cars and I witnessed this many times in the past year--- sgt call the dss, approve all field reports in aira, handle beefers, department vehicle accidents, cr investigations, iod/trr's, crybaby p/o with the tummyache who has to go home excused, major incidents ( bad traffic crash, fire, shootings, etc..) the department was 125 sgts short, minus 16 makes 141, plus 30 means still 111 short....

It doesn't matter whether they say who's merit or not. People on this blog will rip anyone and everyone, that's why it's shrouded in secrecy. You should really worry about who made it off the list, not the merits. The clouted people are rarely merits. History has told us that. When you guys bash merit into oblivion, then only the clouted will make promotions. Just like other things complained ad Nashua. Oh cuz our promotion process and exams are never shrouded in secrecy? No, it's just the merit process. Wake up.
As always, you want merit promotions fine have them. But they should be made at the very end. All the people who earned the promotion should be promoted first and the last class or two can be merit.

This department is full of naive, dumb people. Cline is a good, working sergeant, but if you think he was merit promotion based soley on that, then you are simply stupid. There are sergeants that work in the same unit that are as or if not more desiring than Cline. His dad was an average Superintedent that would have been forgotten, but uses the police memorial to stay relevant and to get his son promoted.

The Sgts and Lts.
Again, magically, more than a third are either from units, have the clout-correct surname or have good Ol Chicago DemocRATic connections. Like I've said in prior threads regarding the upcoming sergeant test: there will be many, many, many folks unpleasantly surprised to see that a lot of their younger coworkers, with lots less time on the job, who haven't been around long enough to experience some of the things on the test, will have aced it. They'll tell you they prepared, studied their ass off and went to prep classes. While that may be true, some were told exactly what they need to study. While us unconnected slugs have been studying every order in the book, the chosen ones are told "you might wanna commit Orders "X" and "X" to memory. Don't think just a little heads up won't effect you. Not when one wrong answer can separate ranks by hundreds or positions. The Chicago and CPD way, never to change. Congrats to those who made their promos in rank order. The rest of you cocksuckers get a big "FUCK YOU" from the rank and file. You'll NEVER have our respect.

He is the hardest working and motivating officer at the academy. And yes, even more so than Snelling.
The sad part is the "perfect test takers" take away from other good police officers who have real supervisory skills that cannot be detected on elitist exams.

Comparing Jim McCarthy to his dad Joe apples do fall far from the tree sometimes.
Poor Matty, he had to wait an extra year for his meritorious bump. Last year news broke on this blog about Matty's great achievement and it got depp sixed. You don't think all the secrecy and changing dates this time around had anything to do with his "DNA" promotion, do you? He did his 18 months in patrol as a P.O., 6 months as a detective, and then another 2 months in patrol as a sergeant. He's giving up his take home car for this promotion. A sacrifice he's making for you and me. I wish I had been born with the "Exempt Chromosome". Don't even get me started on Wiberg. I know of only one "meritorious" lt from the current test that isn't an exempt member. And yes I'm off the list, I know who's legit and who's a thief. "Commander Cline & Comander Wiberg report to the Superintendent's office". Has a nice sound to it, doesn't it?

To the person complaining about a third being from units....keep in mind the test was given in 2006. Can't say the exact break down but not everyone was in a unit when they took the test and when promoted off the list that wouldn't make a difference anyway. The LT list anyway

That's a different Roman. Bob is a patrolmen who does not eat from a silver spoon. The guys is a great copper who fills every spot there. Buys, enforcement etc. all around good guy.

It doess't matter who gets promoted whether they are from the list or are merit selections, people have nothing better to say or do. If you were in their shoes and were put in for merit promotions don't tell me that you wouldn't take the promotion. stop insulting people that get promoted, deal with it or quit the job.

Only 33 sgts? If you subtract the 16 Lts they promoted, they really only added 17 more sgts. how many sgts retired w/ in the past year? The total doesn't even provide each district with two sgts.

Poor Matty, he had to wait an extra year for his meritorious bump. Last year news broke on this blog about Matty's great achievement and it got depp sixed. You don't think all the secrecy and changing dates this time around had anything to do with his "DNA" promotion, do you? He did his 18 months in patrol as a P.O., 6 months as a detective, and then another 2 months in patrol as a sergeant. He's giving up his take home car for this promotion. A sacrifice he's making for you and me. I wish I had been born with the "Exempt Chromosome". Don't even get me started on Wiberg. I know of only one "meritorious" lt from the current test that isn't an exempt member. And yes I'm off the list, I know who's legit and who's a thief. "Commander Cline & Comander Wiberg report to the Superintendent's office". Has a nice sound to it, doesn't it?

Thats because this is the Chicago Police Department not the United Stated Army. I applaud his service but the fact is he hasn't worked the streets in a looong time. I hope that he is a great supervisor, but to say that he is the only one who deserves it is a rediculous comment.

You have to love how some people just are so bitter. You have nothing better to do than mention how a person on the list is connected to someone. How they didn't earn their spot. Look, the bottom line is they are on the list and you are not fucktards! If someone made it via merit then that is ok.
No, your wrong, if merit actually went to exemplary officers that are hard working, have the stats to prove they bust their asses, who aren't connected, who didn't pass an envelope, who didn't contribute cash to their local politician, or get a heads up on would be on the test, I and others like me would be happy for those promoted. The problem is, is that the system has become so blatantly corrupt that people are fed up. There are great officers being passed over for the connected and of course the connected want to keep the status quo. I'm not bitter, haven't taken a test in 10 years and have no interest but that doesn't mean I am not sickened by the process because it's an absolute joke. I feel sorry for the young officers that will be denied so a clouted kid can leave this job with their pockets well lined.

Last test was around 400 with merit
2006 test was at 247 off the list before the current list came out. Now depending on how much merit he used, they could be right around 268. Now average jfeds 30% and gmacs 20% use of merit = 335 sergeants made off of the 2006 test.
Those off you who fall between 268 and 335 and were not promoted, can thank or spit on the merit Sgt they work for.
Congratulations Dan Simon! You will be sorely missed in 022 and another district will be extremely fortunate. Good luck in your next assignment.
Delaney has 20 years on this job, scored well on the test and got promoted off the list. Leave the girl alone you douche bags.

Take the bad with the good, you still have a city job that pays well with good benefits. Yes there is corruption and favoritism but I would be willing to bet that alot of you guys complaining spend alot of the company time studying, and then when you dont make it standing around complaining on company time. If you want the benefits of a city job you have to put up with the bad stuff. You can bash me all you want but im very grateful i have 23 yrs on a high school diploma and in my mind a very good job. If you are that unhappy you can always try your luck in the private sector.

Enough with the Jody defenders. Yes, we have a better schedule. Yes we knew who was merit. BUT..he re-opened a bunch of previously adjudicated cases, sending an officer to prison and derailing the careers of countless others, reorganized the dept structure into a jumbled mess by creating bureaus and allowing civilians to run the show (i.e. masters masters masters) , and fled the scene of a very scary shooting lol. An under qualified coward who made one or two good moves on the way to further destroying a department that was already on the decline… A federal INVESTIGATOR running a major metropolitan law ENFORCEMENT agency…lol, doomed from the start. May as well have a police deputy run streets and san! Wait… err…. never mind...
Good luck to those that made it on merit, I hope you all find inside spots and I'm not on your log. Well done to those who made it on score!
