Wrong Victim

Most robbers who are good at their "trade" know how to pick a victim. They feel them out, follow them for a bit, see how they react to various stimuli. Riding up on a bike leaves you open to all sorts of bad outcomes. This is one of those times, though it could have been worse....for the robber that is:
  • A man was taken into custody after trying to rob an off-duty Chicago police officer at knifepoint early this morning, authorities said.

About 12:30 a.m., the 20-year-old man bicycled toward the officer as he was walking in the 1700 block of West Diversey Parkway, Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said. Displaying a knife, the suspect announced a robbery, according to police.

The off-duty officer announced his office and took his assailant into custody "without incident," Greer said.
We guess having to go into lockup and ask for a change of underwear qualifies as "without incident." Nicely played Officer.

Could have easily killed the mfer. Are the papers going to commend the officer for exercising restraint? They jump all over it when coppers are involved in shootings.

Yes, it WAS lucky. Lucky for the owners and tenants of all those high-end townhomes in the area. They should be grateful it was a cop this idiot tried to stick up, instead of one of THEM.
(Of course, in that area, they'd probably have offered to take the poor, underprivileged robber over to Starbucks for a caramel macchiato.)

Thank God officer is ok. Alone with an assailant things can go to shit real fast.

I try to be hyper-aware, even while running errands off duty.

Great job officer.

Ever notice most of this nonsense happens in the middle of the night. When good folks should be at home sleeping. Seems many of these cappers involve liquor. Victim or offender had been drinking.

OT: Department needs to dump the old Sgts list. Department has the results of the first part, second part is scheduled. Why promoted people from the old list, further down the list, when you can promoted the best qualified from the new list? No corporation or business in the private sector would do so.

If the people currently on the old list are the best qualified to promote, then they will demonstrate that on the new test. The next NFL draft will start with players not drafted in last year's draft.

So...

In this era of being more unsafe on the streets of this town that ever before, (Fancy Dancer and the ham-headed mook impersonating a Police Superintendent can go scratch with thier ginned-up, word salad with bullshit vinagrette crime stats) are there still coppers who are somehow proudly militant about being deliberately unarmed while off duty?

Yeah yeah... Personal choice and all that...

"Well, I don't wanna get into a shooting off-duty."

OK... Nobody WANTS to get into a shooting ON-DUTY either! It tends to fuck up your day regardless of when you drop the hammer.

BUT!

You're prepared to deal with the on-duty contingency because you have the tools.

Off duty... You're naked except for the means to protect yourself and others.

Standing/sitting there gobsmacked or being able to take the fight to the other m/fer(s)?

I occasionally read the CAPS meetings reports on DNAinfo and caught this gem, about another robber who picked the wrong victim:

"Around 2:20 a.m on Nov. 3, Bucktown police said they arrested an armed robber as he attacked a man with a stick in the 1400 block of West Wabansia Ave.

Dominic Eskridge, 29, of the 4800 block of West Kamerling Ave. was beating the man that he was trying to rob, but the victim, a 23-year-old man, happened to be skilled in the martial arts and fought back.

Eskridge, who was charged with felony armed robbery, was sent to an area hospital with a broken leg."

Oak lawn Police/ Security Guards arrested a Chicago Cop for battery, after the cop was battered and assaulted by a senior citizen at a gas station in Oak lawn. The cop pushed the senior to the ground, after being assaulted/ battered. Unbelievable...... Arrest some real criminals, freaking morons......... CPD Cop

I read about the idiot that pushed the old man down and broke his hip and tore his rotator cuff in Oak Lawn. I am not going to mention his name and there are two sides to every story, but how do you justify striking an 87 year old man. Thanks ass hat for making all of us look bad and giving the haters out there more reason to dislike us. In the past Oak Lawn has always treated us well. I hope this does not change due to this jerk.

8:25 about the current sgt list: You must be some sort of super genius. They have only made about 243 off the current list. I suppose if you don't score under that you will withdraw your name from promotion as a matter of principle. Myself, I scored 99 on the first part of the previous test. Now waiting for the next class to be made. In the mean time I've gained eight years more experience and have probably forgotten more than you know, genius!

Hey CPD cop I'm sure you were there and know the whole story right? Stop being an ass. The CPD cop will get his day in court. And as for the security guards you call from Oak Lawn, I want to say good job to them in the chase that your CPD boss called off after an 11yr old was killed. They gave it up at their jurisdiction and we (CPD) FUCKED IT UP. One CPD to another.
