Ban e-Cigs?

Here you have a mostly harmless device that is actually helping people to quit a vice that kills as many people as most others combined, and the Nanny State wants to ban it in Chicago:
  • E-cigarettes will join regular smokes and other tobacco products as forbidden in most indoor public places in Chicago after aldermen today passed a measure backed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to restrict where electronic cigarettes can be used and how they can be sold.

The ordinance, which passed 45-4 after opponents took one last chance to voice their displeasure, will prohibit people from using e-cigarettes in restaurants, bars and most other indoor public places in the city. The measure also will require retailers to sell e-cigarettes from behind the counter so it’s harder for minors to get their hands on them.

Emanuel has made tobacco regulations a recent focus, working to frame the discussion over cigarette sales as a question of how willing elected officials are to protect children from getting lured into addiction at a young age.
Someone notices that whenever Rahm wants to force legislation through, it's always "...for the children"
  • And Ald. Rey Colon, 35th, said he resents how people who oppose greater restrictions on e-smoking have been accused of not having children’s best interests at heart. “I hate to keep using, I keep thinking of that movie ‘My Cousin Vinnie’ – ‘the youths, the youths.’ We keep using the children as an excuse to pass any ordinance we want to pass, because who can deny the children?” Colon said.
Funny, we always thought it was the parents' job to raise the children properly, not government.

One, maybe two things, Rahm is afraid of losing money from the cigarette tax or big tobacco companies are paying off politicians to ban e-cigs. Lots of people are quitting smoking with the e-cig and tobacco companies don't like them.

Wrong answer. Under modern government, the only right parents have is to produce children. After that, they belong to the government one way, or another. Government always knows best what is good for it's children.

Anyone who smoke cigarettes must have a death wish. It's not cool any more.

My family is trying to get our brother to go to e-cigs to get him away from those f###ing things.

Our father died of lung cancer 40 years ago and it was a horrible way to go at only 44 years old.

One of the worst parts of my career was being cooped up in a squad car with smokers. One in particular who never wanted me to open the windows.

Well I'm retired and he's been dead of lung cancer for a few years now. RIP

So now the E-cigarette users will be forced to be subjected to second hand smoke from the tobacco smokers because they will all be forced together! Also what a "Coincidence", Turban Durbin was on the floor of the Senate yesterday denouncing E-cigarettes. Does anyone doubt for a second that these whores, Turban and Tiny were acting on behalf of Big Tobacco?

It's only vapor, still contains nicotine but that's it. No nasty smell or smoke or ash or death chemicals. Follow the money, that's all this is about. And that same day this stupid city paid out over $13 mil in settlements to people, from our tax dollars, because of a drunken city worker crashing into a crowd on the Gold Coast and a faulty 1981 rape prosecution.

Liberalism run amok! We must ban E-cigarettes as a gateway to actual tobacco smoking, but we must decriminalize marijuana and deny that it is a gateway drug while we extoll its medicinal values.

Cigarettes cause cancer and lung damage, but we can never mention what Mary Jane does to the lungs of long term users - - it has more tar than tobacco.

Unlike the tobacco industry, lobbyists for e cigarettes have yet to make a contribution to the Democratic Party. The same is for legalized marijuana, which apparently is ok.
Speed camera revenues will provide for the kids...everything else is gravy for the Chicago way.

If the city of Chicago was concerned about revenue, they would have CPS keep a better eye on the 750-1000 displaced teachers roaming freely throughout CPS schools. Here's why:

One of the biggest scams going on throughout CPS these days involves reassigned/displaced teachers. Since there aren't any absent/vacant teacher position or bucket numbers to sign in under, many reassigned/displaced teachers are swiping in at schools without reporting to their 'assigned' school's main office, leaving to go back home or running errands, and then coming back to school at the end of the day to swipe out. Basically, getting their regular teacher pay and benefits for doing nothing. Some reassigned teachers are also having other staffers at schools swipe in/out for them.

How is this possible? CPS and school clerks aren't on the same page regarding which reassigned/displaced teachers have been placed at their schools. And, since CPS and not each school is paying for the salary of each assigned teacher, there's nothing for the clerk to do in reporting salary information. Most school clerks are clueless as to which reassigned/displaced teachers wil be working at their school from when to when.

Some reassigned/displaced teachers have until Jan. 24th to be considered a reassigned/dispalced teacher. After the 24th, reassigned/displaced teachers wil then be cadre substitutes and there must be a position or bucket number for them to work under to get paid. And, some reassigned teachers were given 2 years to work as substitutes while receiving their regular teacher pay and benefits (including sick days), if their school changed curriculum (like going wall-t-wall-IB).

I wonder how many of these reassigned/displaced teachers are violating the CPS residency Policy as well?

Watch for Chicago City Council to tax e-cigarettes to the same degree as tobacco.

When asked directly on WLS on 1/16, the on air alderman stated, "It appears that is where this ordinance is headed."

He left out the part though, "It's for da' children!"

I read some time ago that Nov 2011 - Feb 2012 five pre-school children were killed when TV sets toppled over onto them [no ma'am, a TV tray is not meant to hold your 50" set] but I hear no calls for banning or even securing them in a child-proof safe. Heck, not even registering them as in the UK!

Normally I agree with you but there are alot of people who use the ecigs just so they can smoke indoors. I have a sister who chain smokes her ecig. I have seen her with one in each hand. If you use it as a cigarette replacement, good for you. Go out side and puff away. Don't smoke your ecig in my face at a restaurant b/c you think it is safe. It isn't safe, look up the recent studies.

The mayor plans to unveil an unpaid furlo day program similar to the one Daley proposed a few years ago, also during contract talks.

Only this one is already done and the directive should be out soon.

It simply offers another day off option in that officers can voluntarily elect to take not more than one unpaid day off per period. It can be connected to other types of elective days off as well as furlos but cannot be used with other unpaid days off without the usual leave process which require a par.
These one day per period unpaid days would be requested voluntarily with a standard tjme due slip, cannot be used for less than a full day and will be subject to the usual approval procedures in place at your unit.

The city calculates that if even 10 percent of sworn personnel make use of the option annually, it can save the city millions.

My question is where will those savings go if not right to our pension fund to shore up how behind the employer contributions have fallen...

Also, if you take an additional day off per period, shouldn't they allow one more VRI day, from max.4 per period, to 5?

No need for the quotes around vapor. It's not something magical, you can Google it. While you're looking things up, check out propylene glycol or vegetable glycol so you won't sound so uninformed saying things like 'pure heated nicotine.' Some might not want to be subject to people stringing words together randomly that don't represent what actually exist in the universe. But there's no need to debate whether second hand e-cig "vapor" is harmful, not here on SCC at least. There are actual scientists who have looked into it, and continue to. Google that too!

Nicotine is bad for u but the hundreds of other chemicals in a traditional cigarette and the tar that smoking produces are the worst aspect of traditional smoking. No its not healthy to vape but it is a better alternative that I choose

http://ntr.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2013/12/10/ntr.ntt203.short

Published research about potential second-hand exposure to ecig contaminants.
-1/10th of the second-hand nicotine exposure than with a traditional cigarette and ZERO exposure to any other particulate (as opposed to the hundreds of second-hand chemicals present in cigarette smoke).

So, if someone blew their vapor directly into your face, it might* be similar* to walking by a smoker exhaling smoke into the atmosphere near the entrance to a building. Maybe.
I wonder how often someone will walk up and blow vapor into your face?

Wow. I can really see why people are running scared from second hand vapor. Ahem...(rolling my eyes)
