Close Schools, Open Schools

  • Chicago Public Schools moved to open seven new charter schools over the next two years, but the Board of Education also denied 11 other proposals as charter proponents and opponents clashed at the Board of Education meeting Wednesday.
This after already closing 50 schools across Chicago, mostly south and west. We can see consolidation of under-utilized properties, but the only reasoning here seems to be (A) a massive shifting of taxpayer money to private corporations who have contributed mightily to Rahm and (B) breaking the teachers union.

Don't believe it? How about this number, taken directly from the CPS supplied numbers:
  • Jennie Biggs, of Raise Your Hand and the Bridgeport Alliance, presented a data study showing that 47 percent of Chicago's charter schools are underenrolled, a figure later cited by Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis in her remarks to the board.
So much for the supposed "high demand" for charter schools used to justify so much of this.

Lots of money for new charter schools. Billions of dollars in downtown upgrades including lighting up the Chicago River Walkway.

But no money for contracts and pensions?

WHY? Because we are to stupid to stick together and fight these bastards.

You hit the nail on the head. Charter schools don't do any better than regular public schools once they don't get to pick their students, but they are pretty good for breaking unions and enriching connected administrators.

If chicago is going to offer two sets of structures under one very poorly performing system, one that costs $ 14,000 per filled seat, and another that costs half of that, both of which fail to prepare students beyond much more than the ability to drop out after 10 years of wasted tax dollars, than I'm glad the one that costs less is expanding.

Dumbass Prosser principal Kenneth Hunter increased his enrollment the last two years to get an extra Asst. Principal and in doing so made Prosser an overcrowded school. If he keeps his enrollment down instead of fleecing the taxpayers so the new AP (his buddy from Amundsen) can handle all the teacher REACH evaluations, then the new charter school across from Prosser has a harder time being opened.

Don't forget if you're a PO working Prosser and you don't play by his murky rules, he complains about you and you get kicked out of HIS school, while he embarasses you with his rants in front of students and teachers.

Teachers unions exist for two reasons, increasing the power of the union and its bosses, and funneling money to the democrat party. Teachers unions to not exist to help educate or provide a good education to our children.
Private and religious schools traditionally have provided a better education for much less money, and are almost always non-union. That's why the teachers unions hate them.

Well, there has been "school choice" in chicago for as long as I've lived here (50+ years). It's called choosing between public and private schools.

Plus, this happening right after Rahm closed how many public schools? Using the excuse of under enrollment and costs?

And let's not forget that charter schools, while eligible for funding by the state, are run by non-government entities such as businesses and civic organizations.

That last point calls into question Rahms real motives.

And last, but certainly not least, what about the parents? Will sending their children to a Charter school get them MORE involved in their childs education? Or will it be a continuation of what we have already, basically a baby sitting service.

Catholic schools (first hand experience) are NOT day care centers - parents are expected to be involved...kids are expected to do homework. They learn consequences.
Further, why approve (& pay for) new charters where CPS closed schools as recently as last year? And, why are charters underperforming? What about political ties/clout and waste of millions in taxpayers$$$?

I am not in favor of charter schools, but yes, please, get rid of the public school teacher's union. The national teachers union, NEA, is the largest union in the United States, and they blindly back every far left liberal Democrat candidate in every election. They support illegal immigration, unregulated abortion, creating all-gay high schools, making schools more Muslim-friendly, higher welfare, and to pay for all this, progressively higher taxes.

In case you haven't noticed, it's the liberals who run Hollywood, make cops look bad, hate cops, promote violence against the police, and who will re-elect Rahm again and again. So let's get rid of the teacher's union, lower our taxes, and make the world a better place to live.

Or, give me a voucher for the tax dollars that are extorted from me to support the very same liberal public school teachers who are destroying our society.

As for the FOP, they have never done anything for me. Let Rahm have them. We can do better.

Does this mean that barbara byrd-

other for property tax money and students. Someone needs to exercise common sense and stop
these obvious revenue generating
ideas. And if you continue to do this spend the money where it is
needed for city-related NEEDS, not

This just goes to prove that Rahm's only agenda as mayor is to

I worked for a charter school last year that was closed due to poor mgmt. They took all comers and performed worse than the neighborhood school according to PSAT test scores. Charters outperform public schools when they can kick out the underperformers (like Noble's demerit/fine system), and parents who enroll their kids there are more involved. Emmanuel's just out to bust unions and hire cheaper, less experienced teachers.

Initially charter schools did quite well. Only because they get to pick and choose the students they want. Charter schools don't have to deal with kids who cause trouble and they don't have to deal with kids who are difficult to teach. Public schools in any big city are disasters. Not because of public schools but because of the economic and social circumstances.

Hi, long time reader, first time commenter. Let me clear up a few things.

One, the number of empty charter seats cited by Raise Your Hand is from a parent group, not the CTU. Many of us have no problems with a moderate amount of charter schools which provide opportunities to experiment w/ different models of education in Chicago AS LONG AS they are 1) transparent w/ how they are spending taxpayer $$, 2) are held to the same performance standards as other CPS schools, 3) are transparent with the agreements/conditions of their charter with the District (currently, these are not shared with taxpayers), 4) are measured against other schools that can restrict enrollment, such as magnet schools, 5) do not get preferential treat in regards to funding and support. There are good charters and terrible charters in the City of Chicago, just like there are great traditional schools and terrible traditional schools in the City. Private schools, like Catholic schools, can also pick and choose students, filtering out students who they can't afford to support (the significantly cognitively disabled for instance.) So, is it educating better in private, magnet or charters? Or better filtering? In working through the data, it's not always clear. (I'm the parent and researcher behind the CPS Apples 2 Apples data project)

Charters are currently funded at the same rate as non-charters per pupil. They do not cost less to the District. They use fewer Central Office resources (and have more freedom from many Central Office requirements). But they also tend to pay very large salaries to the executives who are running the next (6 figures for each charter network) as well as paying a principal/assistance principal. So, some of that money is going to executives, not to the classroom. There are federal financial incentives for investors to "invest" in charter school support and then make money from those investments related to something called "The New Markets Tax Credit" (NMTC) which is why you see corporations, hedge funds, Wall Street, and foundations interested in investing in charter school projects. It is actually very lucrative.

It's a little more complex than this, but that is an overview.

The approval of the 7 charter schools yesterday was more difficult for the Board to avoid than it is imagined. Any charter school denied can now appeal to the State Charter Commission for approval w/o the input of Chicago Public Schools. If approved, they can open up a school w/ taxpayer money and zero oversight from the District (less than the little oversight that CPS has now over charters). This happened with 2 schools which were turned down last year. Better to approve the schools which would likely get approved by the State Commission and retain oversight, then turn them down and have them open later with no oversight at all.

This is not straightforward. It is systemic, and could really change the landscape of the public school system. As you know, as law enforcement, problems with schools end up as your problems on the street eventually.

This all boils down to Rahm and Rauner and their union busting ways.
Studies show that charter schools have been proven to be no better than traditional CPS schools.
The difference is charter schools are privately run( by Rahm's connected friends) yet they operate off of public school funds( our tax dollars).
Because they're privately run they aren't unionized and therefore Rahm can further his attack on unions.

School choice is the only proven method to better education. Catholic schools and other private religious schools have been doing a lot more with much less funding
-----

First of all, "choice" is not a method. Secondly, charters and private school can pick and choose which children can get in and who can get kicked out. Parents of private schools have a vested interest in their child's education and care because they pay money. Third, the cps is underfunding schools with malicious intent in order to make sure that they fail so the city can wash its hands of education.

I work at a CPS high school and there are some major shit head kids in it which the city refuses to suspend-our school has to beg downtown to approve discipline measures that you would never even think would be denied support.

Bottom line, we cant throw shit heads out. My school should have an average ACT score of 24 if we could pick and choose! See there is that word "choice" again. Funny how I don't get to choose who I get to teach. The students have a right to a free education. They have to go some place (special ed, handicapped, behavior disorders, wards of state) charters and private schools can deny all these students.

Please read the link in an above post about 9 things rahm does not want you to know about charter schools.

You're spot on my friend. In fact Prosser Career Academy HS, an underperforming and overcrowded school, has 20-25 teachers/administrators making $86K+ with 10-14 of them making close or over $100. One shop teacher (Frank Lagodny) is teaching a construction class for $105K. Three years later, the principal's greatest fear is that my partner & I will leave the school.

Thats because your commander backed you up. Only he can remove you from the school.

Here's a story about another fine CPS teacher:

Lane Tech Coach Investigated For Inappropriate Conduct With Student
January 23, 2014 9:41 PM

CBS) – Chicago Public Schools officials and state investigators are looking into allegations that a Lane Tech teacher and coach had a sexual relationship with a female student.
CBS 2’s Derrick Blakley reports the webpage for Lane Tech aquatics touts the program’s success, and even though the page still lists Paul Rummelhoff as head swim coach, it appears he’s not currently at the helm.

Students said it’s been around two weeks since Rummelhoff, who’s also a math teacher, has been seen at the sprawling North Side school. He apparently was removed by CPS management.

School officials confirm he is being investigated for alleged inappropriate conduct with a female Lane Tech student.

“The safety and well-being of our students is among our top priorities. The district has been made aware of these allegations and has contacted appropriate agencies so that this matter is fully investigated,” a CPS spokeswoman said in a written statement.

Sources said the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has been notified and has launched an investigation as well.

Rummelhoff also served as an assistant baseball coach at Lane Tech. Word of these allegations is widespread at the school, especially among athletes.

Here's a thought for you all...

CPD can go anywhere...private or public way..

Why not spend part of your shift checking vehicles in the Charter School Lots for expired plates and rear/front and city stickers...

To the goof who said FOP has never done anything for me: You may have made the most moronic comment ever posted on this site.

While you may not care for one or more of the current leadership, have you ever taken a look at your contract book? Everything in that book was fought for and earned by the FOP. The City didn't give us any of it because we're such great guys.

There was a time when there wasn't any overtime. Coppers never saw a weekend off. Your days off, watch, and even district could be changed on a whim. Let's see. Better work schedule, compressed salary schedule, free health care at 55, no more rotating shifts, legal defense coverage for twenty four bucks a year. Do you really think these things materialized out of thin air?

You always have the option to become a fair share member. It's something you should consider.

Fair share may be on its way out. US Supreme court is hearing a case on fair share right now Here is a quick short article about the case that states conservative judges appear to be changing their views on fair share. Unions could be in big trouble

He probably only has 4 years on the job. Everything you mentioned occurred when he was still in living at moms.

Madigan is backing a heavily influenced Hispanic Charter School proposal to build a grade school and high school in or around the area of 65th & Narragansette in the Garcia Ridge Neighborhood. They already have a CPS High School (Kennedy) and at least 3 grade schools in the area.

65 and Narragansett isn't Garcia Ridge dumb ass.

When's the last time CPS teachers and the CTU backed the CPD?....We're waiting for them like Maytag repairman does for work.

You teachers piss and moan how you're getting screwed all the time and how you want Rahm gone. At least we can all vote him out. Hell, you guys can't even back your own. Where were all you teachers when your buddies at the 50 schools were marching to stop from getting closed down? Where? On vacation....You teachers only marched downtown when it affected all your pockets...but, what did you teachers get out the strike? NOTHING, but, your fellow teachers losing their jobs at 50 schools and others who got cut due to budgetary reasons because you wanted your raises so bad.

You really want to be right don't you... teachers union stood by the police in may of 2012, the only time mikey shields got off his ass and showed up to a union march(I think rahm slapped his pee pee for that) and never again. FOP got good press for that too. The march for school closings is an attention tactic (we could have 26k or 26, it wouldn't matter, those school were closing so rahm slapped our for striking. Unions have been LEGISLATED OUT OF RIGHTS in Illinois. We cant collectively bargain laws. Now stop your crying and start fighting back or stfu!
