Poor Planning

Gee, it's like no one at City Hall knows how to plan for a Chicago winter - or their taking Al Gore's bullshit to heart and spending the money somewhere else because, you know, global warming!
  • The City of Chicago already has used about half its 2014 plowing budget trying to deal with the deep snow and intense cold that took hold this month.

The city has spent $11.2 million since Dec. 31 on snow removal, according to city spokesman Bill McCaffrey. That's $1 million from the 2013 plow budget and $10.2 million in 2014 funds.

That includes $7.2 million worth of salt, $2.5 million in labor costs, including overtime for plow drivers, and $1.5 million in equipment costs, according to numbers McCaffrey provided.
Rahm also announced that he was having pothole crews working 7 days a week until at least April, meaning a lot of OT for patching crews - it's like VRI for Streets and San!

What? $7.2 million for Salt? Only $2.5 million for Labor including OT 4 plow drivers. Little old Salt tops Labor? Come on...I wanna Salt Contract.

Anybody see the email Ald Mary O'Connor sent out? What a bunch of self serving BS, out and out lies about every street being plowed several times, blaming people for throwing snow into the street after shoveling, neighbors not banding together to help.

No matter what the other Aldermen said and what was in the SunTimes, she went right along with Rahm and his line of (Kevin Bacon in "Animal House) "All is Well"

I'm still waiting for the garbage and recycling to be picked up....I guess the garbage truck got stuck.

It's not overtime for the pothole crews and it's pretty much the same schedule they always go on, except they're starting one week early.

More smoke and mirrors, scc. But if you announce it to the world like it's a BIG NEW PROGRAM, it must be truth, hmmmm?

The comments about 41st Ward Alderman O'Connor are spot on! I emailed my complaints that the only time we saw a plow that actually had the blade down was yesterday. We the neighbors cleared the street to make it passable. They had a plow go down the street at about 30-35mph, on top of that it was garbage day and the carts were at the curb. The plow actually came down the street 3 times during the day. For what the snow was gone. Yes she is full of shit!!!!!!

In a typical winter Chicago gets approximately 38 inches of snow, but last year got a little over half that so this dope just assumed we would have another year like last year instead of the norm. Looks good on paper to balance the budget until reality strikes and you blow through over half your budget before January 15th. Great planning dipshit!!!

A number of years back, when Brian Doherty was alderman, we called his office to ask why our street had not been plowed. The flunky that answered the phone took our info and told us we would hear back from the aldermans office.

He was true to his word. The very next day he called back and left a message stating that the city does not plow side streets in the suburbs.

We live about 1 1\2 blks north of Harwood Heights, in CHICAGO!

It's cost so much because they use Sea Salt provided by Vanecko Plowing. It's better for the streets and his bank account seeing that he lost his bid to get all charges dismissed.

If you looking for money to plow streets in Jeff Park or Norwood Park, maybe the city can go borrow money from the Nishibayashi family running their fiefdom at Taft High School. The Nishibayashi have NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE members of their immediate family working as PE teachers and coaches with one being the school's AD.

Together for FY2012, the THREE combined to make $221,245. (FY2011, the THREE made $190,401)

NOW, with a (.05) COLA and (.03) teacher raise (negotiated from the teacher strike), the THREE will make $238,944 for FY2013 and their combined salaries will grow to $255,670 for FY2014 with a (.05) COLA and another (.02) teacher raise.

From 2011-2014, the THREE Nishibayashis will make a combined $906,260 for rolling out gym balls.
($190,410 + $221,245 + $238,944 + $255,670 = $901,260)

Nick Nishibayashi (father), Taft AD/PE teacher (made $90,067 in FY2012, $97,272 in FY 2013, & $104,081 in FY2014??)
Brett Nishibayashi (son), Taft Head Basketball Coach/PE Teacher ($76,953, $83,109, & $88,926)
Chad Nishibayashi (son) Taft assistant coach on multiple teams/PE Teacher ($53,395, $57,866, & $61,916)

~ Both sons were hired without any type of hiring process, just given their jobs.

~ Nick (father) only has two classes and gets six periods off because he's Taft AD, leaves after the last bell, and still collects extra money as being the AD for after-school hours. But, nobody presses him on it. And, Nick has been doing this for the past 10 years with his TWEO classes being covered by one of his sons, who co-teach(?) with him.

~ A THREE Nishibayashis recently received a paid days off to attend a PE workshop in St. Charles and all were 'no-shows', instead all THREE were spotted drinking beer on a Bears road trip.

~ Taft (52-minute) PE classes are run like prison yards, start 25 minutes after the bell with only 18-20 minutes of unorganized activity (OPEN GYM), and 5-7 minutes to get ready for the next class period

~ Every Taft PE Teacher has continued to receive superior ratings on their REACH teacher evaluations, meaning all will have their jobs next year and the fiefdom lives on!!!

So after Cholly Williams gets axed, will Rahm chose Deb Kirby or better yet, Henny Penny to run the CDOT?

Winter storm blows through Chicago's finances

Posted: Jan 10, 2014 8:42 PM CST Updated: Jan 10, 2014 8:42 PM CST

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The polar vortex blew a storm through Chicago's finances.

The city said since the first snow began on New Year's Eve, it has spent $11.2 million on snow plows and salting.

That includes more than $7 million worth of salt, $2.5 million on labor, including overtime, and $1.5 million to run equipment.

The storm exhausted half of the Streets and Sanitation's budget for all of 2014, and it's only January.

Rahm says; IT'S BUSH'S fault......

Charlie Williams said in the papers that he is limiting only 1 truckload per shift of salt to each driver, no matter how much snow falls. he also said that he has to allow for more weather. Seems to me that this salt was spread needlessly or in the more entitled areas, because my street had no salt except what I spread in front of my home. BUllshit I smell. Bye Bye Charlie

Can we trade O'Connors? It won't take much effort as the two sit side by side in the City Council Chambers (Wards 40 and 41). Both O'Connors (Pat and Mary) are great at taking care of themselves and their families while ignoring their constituents. Both had their streets plowed while the commoners had to shovel without any help from the city.

Other night on the news when Sawyer's kid was crying that his ward doesn't get enough salt, Charlie W., I believe, made the comment that in the next couple days, when the temp rises, the salt on the ground will start working and melt the snow...Not the 40 degree weather...I guess knowing ice's melting point is not required to run Streets and San..

Wow, someone has an axe to grind! Sounds like you work at taft and know a lot about the reach system. Have you called them out in person or do you regularly go along with shit you disagree with but do nothing about. Your not part of the solution, but part of the problem. You also decide to use politician/compstat type numbers by using one instance and having that speak for all teachers.

Nick Nishibayashi (father) was removed as Taft AD late last week due to nepotism. The information I posted above went out to many 'in the know' people, including the Ald. O'Connor, and it was a solution to the problem. And, you're almost correct as my neighbor ia s '52-hour a week working' teacher at Taft. She gets there at 0730 and leaves at 1800 every school day and those THREE are thumbing their noses at hard working teachers and POs. However, I do live in Copland and my taxes are going to these Moes at Taft, many of whom don't pay city txes as they live outside Chicago.

Here's more graft at Taft:

Taft's new attendance clerk (Gary Longo makes $90K) replaced another clerk who only made $57K. But, Longo worked with Taft's recently resigned principal (Mary Kay Cappitelli) and an assistant principal (Carol Garai) at Amundsen. So, he's connected.

A Taft counselor (Nora Sapieka, $75K) was cut last year after Mary Kay found out her mother (Phyliss Ehret, $86K) was her direct supervisor for FOUR years under former Taft principal Artur Tarvardain. Mary Kay tried to have the mother cut too, but, she had too much clout and remains at Taft is some psudeo-admistration position surfing the internet for dresses, recipes, sending chain e-mails, and gardening supplies.

Now are these other two examples of the graft at Taft politician/compstat type numbers too? or, are they examples of wide spread problems at Taft and thoughout CPS? Don't get me started on OUR, POOR teachers and their CPS Residency violations.

Why do we need people patching seven days a week? Because, since the rapid thaw, potholes are everywhere and can cause thousands in damage to a car, even 'on the weekend'.
The patching crew IS NOT RECEIVING any overtime to work seven days a week, so why would you think it's a great idea to cut back on patching?
