Rahm Surrenders....Sort Of
Instead of wasting many more hundreds-of-thousands of dollars, Rahm is bowing to the inevitable....with conditions:
- Mayor Rahm Emanuel indicated today that he won't fight a federal court ruling that struck down Chicago's ban on gun stores and instead will ask for six months to come up with rules.
The mayor didn't offer specifics on how his administration will try to retool the city's gun ordinances to meet the court standard. But he said he isn't appealing the ruling because the city keeps losing the court cases and he doesn't like litigation for litigation's sake.
“Though I fully disagree, the city has little option but to follow the ruling of the court. I’ve instructed the Law Department to work with public safety experts and community leaders to create a comprehensive set of restrictions on the sale of firearms to ensure that illegal guns don’t find their way into the hands of criminals or straw purchasers,” Emanuel said.
The strategy is a departure from that of predecessor Richard M. Daley, who tended to appeal setbacks on Chicago's strict gun laws all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
According to our good friend and NRA Lobbyist Todd Vandermyde, the fees alone for this latest court fight are already in the neighborhood of $500,000. We expect that giant City of Chicago novelty check with the mayor's signature prominently displayed will be making the rounds shortly.
- Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Thursday he will abide by a federal court ruling he views as a “straitjacket” — by allowing gun dealers to set up shop in Chicago — but needs six months to figure out where to put them.
Aside from building a protective bubble around schools, Emanuel refused to say where he believes gun shops should be confined or how he intends to comply with Monday’s ruling and still keep illegal guns out of the hands of criminals and straw purchasers.
Vandermyde has a suggestion to the city's foot-dragging:
- Todd Vandermyde, legislative liaison for the National Rifle Association, welcomed the mayor’s decision to throw in the towel, but not the six-month delay.
“The city is becoming a little more sensical in their litigation approach, but they can figure this out a lot quicker than that,” Vandermyde said.
“There are a lot of other towns that have gun shops. They seem to have figured out that it’s a retail business that fits in a retail zone.”
And of course, it wouldn't be proper if the supernintendo didn't have something nonsensical to say:
- After joining the mayor in presiding over a CompStat hearing at police headquarters, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy noted that Chicago’s second murder of 2014 involved a legal handgun that was stolen in a burglary because the gun owner “did not properly safeguard” that weapon.
So you see? It's all the fault of you legal gun owners that a criminal burglarized a house, stole whatever wasn't nailed down, and sold it for pennies on the dollar for a quick heroin fix and then that gun ended up being used in a crime. And don't you dare bring up the massive manpower shortage that enabled a criminal to break into a house unmolested by the police. Or the complete absence of Evidence Techs that don't even show up to print a crime scene any more. Or the lack of detective manpower that might have pursued and apprehended the ne'er-do-well before he was able to sell the gun. Or the Cook County justice system that set him loose twenty times before this burglary.
It's the eeeeeeevil guns that are to blame!

God, I hate him. I thought I hated Daley, but this guy is the devil, himself.
yeah it's the legal gun owners. not the dnc's own doj running guns down to the drug cartels with impunity....right
those actions that are allowed to continue under a double standard of law is what creates hatred and distrust of every good, straight hard working cop. it tarnished law enforcement as a whole.
that said. we're waiting for the chicago gun shop owners to be set-up. we are waiting for just one ccw case that rahm can use as a tool.
y'all knows how this establishment double standard on the laws works. see any too big to fail bank executives doing time for their terrorist crimes against humanity.
neither do i.
tyrants.
I love the NRA. They make our socialist anti-American politicians miserable by forcing them to respect our Constitution and its Bill of Rights.
City of Chicago Gun Store License will only be $1,000,000.00 a year
The "Machine" is showing cracks. WeThe People are speaking (through the Constitution and the courts, because our elected representatives are clearly not interested in our opinions). These idiot politicians best learn to listen up while we're still behaving politely.
As a life long Chicagoan that is tired of his second amendment rights being ignored by this city's leaders, I'd like to propose 9.5 being given all the time he needs to draft the legislation he sees fit...
As long as his eighth amendment rights as curtailed until his draft is enacted, then challenged in court, and is deemed fully constitutional. Those would be:
Amendment VIII
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
He can be held in the worst holding cell in the city with a bond equal to a sum of cash that would fully fund first responders pensions, while being serenaded 24/7 by Roseanne Barr at 180 decibels.
Bet he'd soon realize that constitutional rights really shouldn't be abridged.
Unbelievable!! Needs six months to develop rules for stores that sell guns?? Almost every village in the nation, over a couple of thousand population has a store that sells guns. The federal government has already developed rules on how to legally sell a gun, all city leadership has to do is follow them. Anyone that votes for a democrat to lead them needs their head examined. BTW, no matter what rules and laws you have about firearms, their sell, usage and ownership, the criminals will ignore them. Criminals don't obey the law.
My old Albanian neighbor told me the tale of the stolen cow. A man in the village had his cow stolen. The next day all the villagers came out to berate the cow owner for not tying his cow up more securely.
If the home owner had a carry permit it would have been on him, not at home. Unless he was going to some liberal restaurant.
It would take one computer savvy nerd about a day to come up with that information. Gun crime in a specific radius to a gun store? Who is he kidding? Politicians.
Don't expect to be buying guns in Chicago anytime soon. The Ordinances and restrictions will be so severe nobody will bother to buy a firearm in Chicago. Cook County has already imposed a $25 tax which is putting a strain on Shore and Cabela's. Yet I am old enough to remember as a child going to Marshal Fields, Mages, Sears at Cong. & State and Wards; they all sold guns in the City of Chicago back then! Somehow the City survived, and there were more people living her then.
The last paragraph is the total truth......you hit the nail on the head.
I would like to see double concrete walls and steel vault doors. You know the shitheads will try and crash a stolen car through the doors and take all the weapons .
If law abiding citizens would not have to fear strapping their handguns and not forced to leave them behind maybe this would have never happen in the first place. Burglaries would still take place but the law abiding citizen would have the option to pack or safeguard it in the house.
My theory is that the citizen would pack whenever out and about. Just food for thought!
I remember a gun shop on the 1600 block of 18th st. as a kid in the mid 60's. It's a law office now, but I can still remember walking by and looking at the guns in the window.
yeah, but the city found a way to hove the parking meters down our throat in 45 minute.
all valid points scc. however, these idiot liberals and dummyrats don't use logic and common sense as we all know. my blood is boiling once again to hear this kind of stupidity to come out of our so-called "leader's" mouth. i could go on and on about how he needs to go but it goes way beyond his dumbass that needs fixing. scc, just continue to post the appropriate, smart and truthful responses on your site to further educate those who don't keep up on the politics as much as they should. good work as always.
How is a gun taken in a burglary a legal gun?
Love the cow story.
We need a computer savvy person to create a say no to democrats sign with the big red stripe trough it similar to the one the state created for business to block CCW patrons. Every police officer in Chicago can print out several and put them in their front windows at election time. It's time to do some campaigning for the politicians that take care of us. "You know what I'm sayen"?
Arrest these shit brained local political thieves and shoot them when they try to escape.
I know it's been said before but it needs to be said again: McCarthy is nothing but a pandering piece of shit.
He claims to have eliminated politics from the promotional process? Take a gander at the most recent list of promotions to see just how good a job Garry did. Truly a disgrace to every man and woman that wears the CPD uniform.
A real man never kowtows to another. And McCarthy did just that the first thing upon arriving in Chicago. He bent over backwards to suck the asshole of a maniacal mayor and beat off a race baiting 'man of the cloth' and his flock of ignorant, brainwashed fools.
Garry McCarthy: spineless puppet.
It's absolutely pathetic what passes not only as a 'man', but as a 'leader' of a big city Police Department.
It's only a matter of time before this social experiment gone awry is replaced with another disaster.
God help the CPD.
I love this damn blog.
Your last paragraph is absolute perfection!
Even the devil doesn't want Rhammie around. Too much competition.
Legal gun stolen by some career criminal Alvarez and the cook county dems refuse to keep in check.
As above mentioned comments described guns being sold in the city, there were laws on the books then regarding gun stores. Why wait six months? Does anyone remember Constable? It was across the street from 11th and State, directly across from the 1st District doors. For those that don't remember, 11th and State was Police Headquarters.
I believe Constable closed in the late 80's, but don't remember the exact year. What a convenience as far as location went.

I do too. Yhe name of the shop was Scarmoozo. On the west wall if you look close you can still see the figure of a hunter painted on the wall.
Good days in old Pilsen.
You're done here rham get the fuck out back to Washington where you can wash the senators feet.
Ok, I got the plan right here in about 5 minutes of my time. Skip the 6 months:
No gun shops within 1500 feet of schools, day care (to include residential ones), funeral homes, parks, places of worship (to include all storefront reverends), liquor stores, or gas stations. That leaves about 0 blocks throughout the city where you could legally put one.
Sorry 'bout that. Guess we'll see you in court again.
No gun shops within 1500 feet of schools CAnt wait to buy ammo too Enjoy my democracy
Dope is slung and u never see the ACLU complain
Because it is easier to go after legal gun owners then to really address the root cause of the problem. And, when that does not work you can always blame the police. I am interested in what will happen in NY after the end of stop and frisk . It will be interesting.
even if and when they allow guns to be sold in Chicago, Who the hell would buy one there. The taxes on it you can bet will be way too high. Buy from the burbs like always.
I doubt if he needs the time to figure out the locations, more likely they are figuring out how to give out lucrative licenses to the connected.
"I hate him. I thought I hated Daley, but this guy is the devil, himself."
Daley merely sold his soul to the Devil. You're right about Emanuel.
