Snow Removal?

We don't know why, but the Slum Times was praising Rahm's snow removal efforts the other day:
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel has survived his first Chicago weather emergency. Give the man his due.

He reportedly was on vacation in Indonesia with his family until Monday, which drew the ire of critics who felt he should have been here in town directing every snowplow like mayors of old. But the plows rolled and the warming centers opened and the schools — if just in time — were closed. As for the 1,500 flight cancellations at O’Hare and Midway, has there ever been a big storm that did not paralyze the airports?

Emanuel, that is to say, did not do a Bilandic. He did not fall on his face during the big freeze of 2014 the way Mayor Michael Bilandic flopped during the blizzard of 1979. On the contrary, city services performed about as well as one might expect. We can’t see some would-be Jane Byrne scoring points against Emanuel on this one.
You'd think that Rahm was out there driving a plow himself. The Slum Times even found an opportunity to toss a zinger at the blog:
  • This did not discourage some bloggers. They bemoaned that every side street was not instantly cleared. “Sit back and watch the show,” one commentator on a cop blog wrote. “Did Tiny make it back from vacation? Maybe he should leave his bags packed because his minions are doing a s--- job of handling snow removal on the streets at the airports.”
Ouch. That hurt. We mean, it's not like cops have any insight into the actual conditions of the street. It's not like we're driving around 24/7 hitting the main streets, side streets, boulevards, alleys, or whatever and might feel the need to report back to other cops that, "Hey, you know what? Driving really sucks at the moment."

It seems an aldercreature noticed the same thing though:
  • Alderman Roderick T. Sawyer (6th) is speaking out about budget constraints that he says restricts the amount of salt that can be used on the side streets in his ward.

Sawyer issued a news release Thursday saying he was "shocked" to discover that trucks his Sixth Ward were restricted to one load of salt to use on side streets.

"The accumulation of slush on our side streets is not only dangerous for my residents, but this slush is pulled out on the arterial streets which make conditions unsafe for all travelers," Sawyer said in the release. "This is the first big snow storm of the year and we cannot allow budget constraints to decrease the safety in my community."
Then Roderick goes and blows the whole thing by implying it might be racial:
  • ....Sawyer insists the trucks were put under a salt restriction, and says he "cannot be handicapped by closed door policies made without consultation and applied inequitably throughout the city."
Don't worry Rod - the streets sucked throughout the city. It's a Rahm-thing, not a racial thing.

The salt truck driving east on 109th Street west of Western on Thursday morning was plowing...but was not spreading salt. My kids even pointed that out. It wasn't till later that I saw this story on the news. Charlie Williams tried to spin Rahm's money saving plan...he said they were managing the salt..not hording it. BULLSHIT! I was in Washington Heights, Beverly, and West Morgan Park today. The streets were horseshit in all of these neighborhoods. A couple weeks ago we had at least five salt trucks come down the street within 30 minutes...this time...they are absent. Rham must be thinking that the warm up is on the way...save some money. You would have thought Rham would have learned from Bilandic.

You don't need salt just fucking plow the snow. No plows = no votes.

Speaking of votes send your FOP election ballots in. Don't care who you vote for but send the fucking ballot in. We need 100% response to show everyone we care and are involved in OUR business.

You want more money, benefits, and control? It starts by filling out ballot and putting it in the mail box. It's already got a stamp.

You can give it to the mailman (postal worker) if you are to lazy to walk to the big blue box.

Respectfully yours, a watch rep.

he's the gypsy mayor.

should of known that from day one when the word 'residency' was redefined. gypsy's don't stay in one place

the gypsy mayor that traveled to china under the guise of promoting chicago's economy....then the gypsy mayor goes on vacation when the people may need him here the most. it goes on and on.

you think the gypsy mayor cares about the churls in chicago. ha.

did the gypsy mayors so-called economic trips help promote chicago business. i can tell you one thing. hotel occupancy as measured by the par has gone down for three months in a row and like conceal carry laws in all the other 49 states other major cities are not having this problem.

for 2014 chicago is expected to suck the hind tit when it comes to job creation. other mayors in other cities don't have this problem.

why is it that our mayor is either unwilling or unable to make a difference.

Side streets still are not cleared west of Morgan St in 9 and we passed a number of salt trucks on main streets that were barely putting down salt. Light spreading to say the least. People sliding all over. Thought Rahm would be towing cars off snow routes by now. Maybe he doesn't want to upset the voters whose cars are still parked on the main streets. Or is he waiting for the rain to take care of the snow? Can afford money for a private stadium, Maggie Daley park but going to cheap out on salt and plowing for the streets in the dead of winter? Avalanche a coming.

Apart from the elite neighborhoods such as the Gold Coast, it is still a disaster area on most of the Chicago side streets and the alleys are even worse. I remember a time when someone with a lick of common sense outfitted Chicago garbage trucks with snow plow blades. Where are those trucks now? Last night, a truck was double parked and my car got stuck on a side street as I tried to back up and reverse course. The nearest alley was completely impassable. It took me about eight minutes to slowly free the car. Rahm Emanuel and the Sun-Times have been lying their asses off about snow removal. It has been a full week and things are only marginally better. The side streets in the 20th District have not been plowed as far as I can see.

You can keep the South & West sides of the city saturated with police (VRI), if you like it.

But, you can't have both.

If you wan't both, you'll have to pay for it (even if the cost is too damn high & you're already paying enough for both).

The first few times it snowed, there were no snow plows anywhere, none. Rahm has only survived with people who do not know any better. I live on Warren Blvd and one snow plow went around the block removing snow on one part of Warren, where the street splits with one half going north, the other going south. He plowed the street going north at least ten tines, did nothing on the street going south except push snow onto the parked cars burying them in snow which quickly turned to ice. Rahm is a one term mayor. He's on TV smiling, let's see how he smiles when he gets voted out. Give him a ticket away from here, he can not do anything right.

Col. SChenkel was a true gentlemen in the old 026. The group that came on when Gary ran The Academy knows he always had a smile on his face and treated PPOs just fine. Anyone who was in The Academy during 9/11 knows Gary is an unquestionable patriot.

You gotta love the way this city works. No plows in my neighborhood for days. Today three city plows up and down the streets near the grammer school 61st & melvina. I shouted to one of the drivers "thank you". He replied that were only here because the mayor is visiting the school Monday morning. Really?

Well the plows finally came down our street but there was no salt in the truck. Guess they used up the allotted truck load for the day. What happens when all the rain and snow freezes tonight? Major shit coming your way Rham. Who decided not to order the salt?

Don't worry; not going anywhere near freezing temps tonight. Mid-30's and higher.

During the very last days of World War 2, residents of Berlin had mail deliveries twice a day and had working telephones. In Chicago were unable to receive mail deliveries or have are streets plowed. Socialism at its best.

Flooded streets now since Rahm scrimped on snow removal. He can spend millions in the ghetto on non-tax paying thugs, but he can't spend what needs to be spent on the rest of the residents who pay taxes.

Thanks asshole. Now in the middle of the fucking coldest winter on record I have to worry about a flooded basement.

Thank-you insignificant blog, the next morning plows resurfaced and hit the side streets.

Some streets the parking area is ice covered my advice is to bring your own salt in the car until we get a new mayor.

Ch 9 just reported on noon news that sts and San are limiting salt to one load per truck per shift due to dwindling salt supply. WTF!!!! This is chicago and we're just into January. Who did not order enough road salt? Fuckin idiots are running the city now. All the elected officials need to be thrown out of office at next election.

What if they ordered enough salt, but the city did not pay its bill so the salt wasn't delivered? You know, just like what happens with office supplies.

To this poster...I disagree about Schenkel...I saw him screw some coppers over and he eventually paid for it with his job. Somehow he weasled his way back here (thanks Terry Hillard)...he will fail again...he likes to throw the USMC creds around though.

Emanuel "didn't want to micro-manage." That's his excuse to leave town any time something big looks like it's on the horizon.
