Seven Years?

  • The Bears have made a long-term commitment to Jay Cutler, signing the veteran quarterback to a seven-year contract, general manager Phil Emery announced Thursday at Halas Hall.

"We're very excited to have Jay for the long term," Emery said. "He battled through the tough times and kept fighting."

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Bears receiver and Cutler pal Brandon Marshall tweeted "BOOM ... JAY 7 for 126 .. Congrats now let's go win." The deal reportedly includes at least $50 million in guaranteed money.
We suppose he can move the ball now that he has some decent targets. But seven years is a long time in the NFL and Cutler has been a bit fragile at times. There's also quite a bit of money being spent and the defense is going to need some major work next year and in the short term future.

Opinions?

Doesn't matter, it's really only 3 years bexause nfl contracts aren't guaranteed, and he will reach his guaranteed money in three years. Also in the press conference emery wants to draft defensive players, to get the defense younger. So that money wouldn't have gone to defensive players. And jay is the best option we have.

It's basically a three year deal worth $54 million. That's all that's guaranteed to him and they can cut ties with him after that. Depending on how the deal is structured they may take a big cap hit by releasing him after the first three years, but once the structure is announced, we'll have a better clue of how long the team and Cutler actually expect this deal to last.

wow... any surprises left from this goofy family with money to burn and too much vested in the "Halas tradition?"

enough already. They couldn't admit this was a transition year. They seem to be in denial that they need to rebuild, they hire a whispering zombie from Canada to praise their losing performance and claim to be proud of their effort against the Packers?

7 years of what? Can you already see next season? Jay will choke because his time has passed. They brought him here to get sacked so many times he's just not the same guy they brought from Denver... he was on his way to greatness and then he met his worthless O-Line and by the time they fixed it, too much else had wasted away.

Tillman, Briggs and Peppers couldn't do it by themselves.

Conti, Bowman, Wright, Jennings... WORTHLESS!
Hester? Done.

The McCaskeys remind me of that inbred, pampered clueless wealthy family with no idea what nitwits they are, and no idea how to run a football team.

My condolences to his family.

It's the NFL…so only look at the guaranteed portion of the contract. Cutler is guaranteed 3 years at $18 million/year. That's no chump change, but the poor suckers in the stands are the chumps.

No way Jay Cutler is worth that kind of money. Has Cutler EVER been NFC offensive player of the week? Yet MCCown was putting up better numbers than Cutler. Bears should have given him the contract instead!

Typical Bears for ya. Since Ditka they have been throwing money at players who don't deserve it.

Counts about 5 mil less against salary cap opposed to having franchised him, so good move. The seven years is a bears option, better to sign and trade if things don't work out than letting him go outright.

Jay is a good quarterback who has the skills and talent to win. Yes he has kind of an aloof attitude but he is from Indiana, they are all kind of weird in that state. He has an offensive line that will develop into a good solid front and receivers that can play. They will win a Superbowl within the 7 years as long as the defense is strengthened.

It's not really 7 years. The fine print allows the Bears to be done with him in as little 3 years, if things don't pan out. NFL contracts are rarely what they seem.

He was what 35-35 with Denver and 58-58 here with being 1-1 in the post season?

He is a 500 QB if that if the definition of a 14 million dollar player per year, then the standards of the NFL are very low.

Green Bay fans are dancing in the street with Mr. 1-9 against them. Do not be making an SB plans anytime soon.. not until at least 2022.

They are quickly becoming the Cubs of the NFL

Terrible move.

Peppers is getting old and has lost a step or two in the last year. Our linebackers aren't much to brag about. Our safety should be shot. Brandon Marshall certainly doesn't have 7 good years left in him, he admitted he's getting old too.

I have to believe they looked at the market and didn't see anything better right now, but SEVEN years?!?!?!?

I just wish the Bears would make the effort to sign McCown. Remember that Dallas game? The Bears had 8 possessions and scored on all of them. McCown deserves a decent contract because the Bears will again need a good solid backup, no doubt about that.

McCown is finally at the point where he can get some decent money in to take of the family and I like the guy. I would have signed McCown and rebuilt the defense. Cutler never has won a big game.

Firstly, he probably won't be around for that long, but the contract had to be structured so. Not all guaranteed money. Secondly, the Bears haven't had a comparable talent at QB since Sid Luckman, and not many are around that remember him. So give it a chance, they could certainly (and probably would) do worse in the draft or free agency.

This is actually a very good deal. The $54 million comes off the books after 3 years. This averages about $18 million a year, which is about what he is worth according to the market. McCown is not the answer. A very competent backup, and the Bears should try to resign him, backup QB is critical in the league. But remember how wonderful Tebow did with Denver? The bears have to evaluate keeping Peppers who is making $9 million next year. That money could pay for a couple competent free agents or to help pay for those players they want to keep.

The long contract is to ease the impact on the salary cap in the short term which will allow the defense to be addressed via free agency. Cutler is guaranteed $50M+ but he'll never play 7 years for the Bears so they won't end up paying him the full $126M.

1/03/2014 09:30:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I, for one, are glad they signed him to a long term contract. I wish they didn't have to pay him so much. That alone will guarantee me a rate increase in ticket prices.
I hear a lot of people say Cutler sucks, he's always injured, but I still think he is a top tiered quarterback in the league. He fits well into Tressman's offense and I think the Bears will become a solid top 10 team during the length of the contract.

Dude, how many points was Cutler on the field for when GB scored . .zip! It was the defense, not the offense that lost the game. Briggs, gone 60% of year, Tillman, out 25% of season, Peppers, worst season of his career. THEY DIDN"T DO IT themselves. At the beginning of the year, if I was to tell you the Bears would score 27 and 28 points against GB, you would have thought they would win both games.

He has had a different offensive coordinator every season he has been here, not a recipe for success then tell me how good any quarter back would feel having J'Marcus Webb as your Blindside tackle, then for some sugar on top you have a guy like Kellen Davis as your tight end and Devon Hester as your #1 and guys like Johnny Knox & Dane Sazenbacher as your #2 &#3... give me a break, Brady, Rodgers or Manning wouldn't succeed with that scenario. I'm willing to give him another shot with this offense.

Bears record could have added two wins at least...if Silent Marc Tresstman had pulled Jay off way sooner when Jay could barely walk and Josh came in with 5 minutes left in the game. Plus, leave Jay out when Josh got hot.

The last Packers game was one of the most badly officiated games I saw this whole season, with refs doing everything for a Rogers' win. Rogers didn't win, the refs won it for him.
Peppers gets held on EVERY DOWN!

The announcers keep saying Peppers needs to step up but he'd penetrate every single down if he wasn't being yanked by the face mask or by his collar.

Tillman and Briggs were sorely missed and, perhaps, pretty much done.

Cutler ain't worth another year. They should have just kept McCowan and bought a new defense.

Tebow would have ran that last down for the 40 yards smash-mouthing his way to the end zone...Jay flung it up for an interception.

Cutler is now 1-8 against his Division Rival, Packers.
He still had :31 with 2 timeouts, 1 of which was never used.
8 seasons in the NFL, 2 playoff appearances, 1 postseason win, the other, hurt.
His career avg yards per game is 230.
Has never thrown more than 27 TD's in a Season, hasn't surpassed 20 since 2010.

quite frankly, he's headed for the Bears' lengthy list of SOLDIER FIELD: Where QB's Go To Die...

Tomzcak, Harbaugh, Walsh, Kramer, Matthews, McNown, Miller, Stewart, Grossman, Orton

and that's not including all the comic relief. Who can remember all the sideshow hot potato last minute bumbling under center by the likes of Moreno, Hutchinson, Tom Willis, Chandler, Hanie and so on...ahhh, and then there's the special mention; FLUTIE!!!

Yes, Virginia, there really is Super Bowl winning bears team in the future, just not one you will live to see so long as you and your sissy sons own the franchise.

Franchise...Luckman...barf. Jay Cutler is an average QB, with an above-average propensity to choke and get injured. McCown was superb this year. He doesn't have years and years left, but he was the obvious choice. That's why they went with Cutler. The Bears are the kings of the sublime, and they have the championships to show for it.
