4 Shot by Police Overnight
The first guy was on home confinement for ....wait for it... UUW!
- The first police-involved shooting happened minutes after midnight when a probationary police officer shot a man who raised a gun in his direction after him and other officers saw him firing shots, according to police.
The first few minutes after midnight in the city are traditionally marked by celebratory gunfire, with officers calling in the gunfire to dispatchers who relay it to other officers in the district and across the city.
This shooting happened near Marquette Road (67th Street) and Rhodes Avenue on the South Side.
Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Patrick Camden said the man shot was celebrating New Year's Eve and out on home monitoring for a previous unlawful use of a weapon conviction.
“You gotta wonder, home monitoring for UUW. And he’s out with a gun and police saw him and he’s not gonna drop the gun," Camden said. "Typical New Year’s Eve [shit].
The Trib article actually has Pat Camden saying "stuff," but we corrected it to what we all know The Orange One actually said.

- Just before 2 a.m., police shot three people in the Fernwood neighborhood. A 25-year-old man and a 30-year-old man were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and a woman, whose age wasn't available, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Police chased someone from the 100 block of West 105th Street after hearing gunfire on the block, according to a statment from the police department's office of news affairs.
Officers approached both the front and back of a house and saw a man on the back porch holding a gun, according to the statement. Police told the man to drop the weapon and he instead raised it toward police.
Police opened fire, hitting one person identified as an "offender" and two others, according to the statement and department sources. Police wouldn't say whether the "offender" was a man or a woman. Police took a gun into evidence from the scene, the statement said.
Co-offenders. Accomplices-after-the-fact. Bystanders. Formerly exuberant fellow celebrants. Pick one, because you know the lawyers will be.

A lot of the PPO's are asking the same question. They have no juice, no phone call, no connections. Several I know who put in for a South side district are being sent to the North side - 24, 25, 19, etc. - and they hate it. Go figure...
I am glad all the Officers are safe. That being said, we, blue shirts, are treated like shit - like third class citizens- by the city and the department. Why would anyone go out there and put their life and everything they have worked for their whole life on the line for this shit hole? Let the animals have at it. They don't want us around anyway so F um.
This is the fault of the police officers. They should have shot the gun out of the person's hand just like in the movies. I am outraged!!!

In 1998 we did the same thing and I ended up killing someone on New Years. The awards were great but the lawsuit sucked. Dragged on till 2005. It was not worth the "gun pinch".

Probation and repeated offenders with guns no way really...when you get to court, and (not probable cause court) this is what you will here: "DISMISS" or sorry officers but the judge does not find you credible- Which to me that's the best one, since all officers carry drop guns and put it on the same guys over and over that commit violent crimes. Its more sickening to see and hear the circus that our judges and lawyers put on in court, knowing a decision has been made way prior to a ruling. $$$$$$$$ Money speaks volumes in a court system, especially when it comes to contributions!

But, too many guns to be getting hurt because an idiot wanted to celebrate. The next day, a 'suspected' house was looked at... plenty of shell casings... SEARCH WARRANT! Chasing for a gun pinch on New Years is simply for the most stupid!

Anyone with any time on the job will tell you that NY Eve + UUW pinches are a recipe for disaster. Obviously your bosses aren't smart enough to keep you guys reined in for a half hour. And these clowns will be nowhere to be found as your asses get dragged thru federal court the next several years. There's a couple of ways to handle these situations and these guys took the worst possible choice. Good luck fellas, you're gonna need every bit you can get.

Un-friggin real. I see that those 008 Tac guys are still the real deal, just like back in the day. I'm shocked that PL wasn't in the station already with another seller of loose cigarettes that he nailed after 3 hours of pod surveillance.

I was fortunate to spend my early years on the job in the Old 18th District in the late 1970s through the 1980s. There you had the blue-blooded Gold Coast and the Cabrini Green projects. The north end before it was "gentrified" was blue-collar and had a bucket of blood tavern on every other corner. You loved the variety and learned to be both a diplomat and a ghetto cop, or should I say diplomatic ghetto co because you were constantly going from one type of client to the other.

You're confused? I'll say!
You're reading a slew of anonymous posts, all with differing viewpoints, which may or may not be authored by police officers, and you are trying to discern a consensus. To top it off, you're giving advice!
A lot of talk about "clout" on this posting.
I was ridiculed for taking the test because I was neither Black, Hispanic or a woman and didn't have a snow balls chance in hell.
Well, I scored high and was hired six months later.
Then one night I got stuck on the desk on mid-nights and was outside the "desk" area consoling a distraught woman who was not on the "A" list society wise by a long shot, who was sitting on the bench crying in the lobby at 3:00 a.m. The D.C. walked in and took note of this and we slowly became friends.
Maybe 10 years later, I was disgusted with the job and the District I was in and took him up on an offer for a spot. Spent six years there and circumstances brought that spot to an end. I went back to the District I was assigned from and rode out my career there.
Moral of the story?
Not sure. Didn't come on the job with "clout" and didn't seek it out or use it, that is unless if asking a favor 10 years later when needed, counts as using it? I needed a break and was given one. Why, and did I deserve it? Make your own call if that was right or wrong.
But it came from an act of kindness and compassion for another human being who others would have disregarded or growled towards.
Sometimes just a plain act of kindness can be rewarding outside of any personal satisfaction derived by yourself.
Sometime good things can happen just by being a good person.

thats right. They should send all the recruits to 001,018,016,024,020,022,008 and leave the guys with time in 015,011,007 and 003
Those poor recruits,some might even have to work midnights

Another problem .. 2am equals coffee break, a nice spot to chill or if your on Tac sitting in the office waiting to go home. There are no excuses. They lit up two bystanders on the porch... That's not going away for the officers and those two are getting paid. Years and years of lawsuits ahead
The guys running the West/End of 008 and the tac guys are great.
They make us retired guys proud. The area is quiet but they roam the streets and alley' very silently.
Be safe to all the great copper' of 008. Us retired guys got your back if needed.
How about the 008th district tact guy (PL) who decided that in the middle of the chaos on Zone 6, he should run a name on the air at 0015 hrs. This tool bag had a computer in his car but wanted to know if the warrant that popped on one of the 742 aliases that came up for his Hispanic driver was a serviceable DUI warrant from Boone County. Un-friggin real. I see that those 008 Tac guys are still the real deal, just like back in the day. I'm shocked that PL wasn't in the station already with another seller of loose cigarettes that he nailed after 3 hours of pod surveillance.

He doesn't know how to do police work. That's why he is part time secretary boy and does nothing but search for warrants and alerts.. All while talking a great game. Brutal. There were emergencys in 008 and 007 while you were running your name. Next time stay off the air and call the AD desk to run the name.
